The moment Ari and I have trained for is here. We’re heading to war.
To support a war on two fronts, the military is relying on drafted soldiers and half-trained gryphon rider cadets like me. From the second we arrive, Ari and I are selected to join a dangerous strike force and tasked to carry an unstable mage into combat, who is likely to set us all ablaze by accident.
Back home, politics and infighting has split my nation in half. Many support Crown Prince Isaac’s reach for power, buying his talks of change and prosperity while Altare’s future hangs by a thread. I hope the traditional and spiteful King Cortes can decide what he stands for before the royal family brings our country to ruin.
Many people hope I don’t survive my time on the Storm Front, but I will stay alive despite all odds to graduate as the first knighted female gryphon rider. Ari and I have overcome too much to back down from extraordinary circumstances.
Dragon Riders of Pern meets Song of the Lioness in this YA fantasy series in which a pair of underdogs rewrite what’s possible in a formerly all-boys military academy and beyond. If you like determined heroines, iron-clad friendships, and majestic creatures, then you’ll love Gryphon Rider Academy!

This series is excellent! If you look back at my review of “Tethered” from July this year, you’ll understand why I’m so ecstatic about enjoying this series - quite simply it delivered on everything that Tethered lacked. Great world building, well developed characters, mature dialogue, and the perfect amount of royal intrigue. I’m SO excited that there’s going to be another book!
This is book three of the Gryphon Rider Academy series and all of Cadet Siv (Sivana) Walker’s year of cadets are preparing for war on the Storm Front. They haven’t quite graduated yet, but every gryphon rider and their gryphons are needed to help the military fight this war on two fronts. Sivana knows that Crown Prince Isaac has started the war, wanting to usurp his father and become king himself. He tried to get Siv to work with him on his plans, having helped to save her gryphon Ari (Arimus), who was blinded when his former rider Alamid, her own father’s best friend, died in an attack, and who had linked with Sivana and led to her getting into the academy. Something King Cortes was completely against, thinking it went against Lord Orion’s own guidance! Isaac since then also tried to have her martyered, to bring about a civil war, but has now had to resort to plying his tricks with the Rathi and Lesthosians. Siv has been marked as one of Mother Nilara’s people, with a streak of white hair amongst all the red, but while she has been tasked with a vision of what she and Ari must do and being under her protection, it is actually Lord Orion, a god, who has picked her as his Chosen, to bring about change to the way in which wild gryphons are treated by the Altarians and the academy. She gets enough stick for being a female gryphon rider, the very first ever, but has finally found her place within the Kite Flight and made some friends there.
There is a question of romantic feelings for Acton Weslecker, whose gryphon is Ironfeather, whilst she also feels some butterflies around Prince Mateo, Crown Prince Isaac’s younger brother, who at first seemed to be her enemy, but was revealed to be her secret helper. Siv has moved up from the bottom of the whole year, to now being in the top ten, but could never end up at the top the way things work. The magic boost she received from Lord Orion, the God of Mankind, allows her to link talk with any gryphon and this is useful when she and Ari sneak out and visit his father Reshawk and some other wild gryphons. Amongst them is Sunset and Reyos, gryphons who recently managed to escape from Fortress Aerie, where the academy is. Reshawk refuses to have anything to do with humans, even though he lost his own mate, Valtora, to the gryphon riders and in fact Siv’s own father is Valtora’s rider. Ari is really there to say goodbye to Sunset, who could have been his mate, but they are going separate ways now and won’t be allowed to be together in current times. Siv’s own father had quit his position as Commander of the 1st Gryphon Flight, the King’s Guard, which didn’t please the king, and her own mother and sister Rissa, had to escape to one of Mother Nilara’s temples to be safe form Isaac’s reach!
Most of those cadets Siv knows are sent to the 7th, to be squires to more advanced riders, whilst Siv gets chosen for a different path to 3rd Flight, one away from the main fighting area of Storm Front, where not much action is expected. How wrong could they be! She and Ari are matched with a fair commander who pushes Siv and Ari daily on their endurance, making them work harder than they ever have. It is he who will come up with her call sign, usually something from a squires error or mistake, something sill that happens to them, but most of the time she just gets called Girl! They are based at Port Lindell near to Weslecker’s family estate and he told her to ask for any supplies she needs. One thing she does need help with is something one of her instructor’s back at the academy gave her, asking her to carry it into every battle, hoping something may jolt it into life again. The gryphon riders will soon be facing eldrafn and rozash, the former never defeated by a single gryphon rider and the latter responsible for blinding Ari and killing hundreds more. Soon she and Ari will have to face the creature they have had nightmares about for weeks, ever since she was made the Mortal Chosen of Lord Orion! Now she is far too busy just trying to survive another day, first days of boredom and lots of training, but then exhausting days in the saddle constantly, fighting the enemy. With a very unstable pyrojack mage called Zizi (Zuri Zaveri), whose own magical fire burns her as much as she burns other items and is very unpredictable! She must learn to trust this stranger, who is not Altare by birth and has an axe to grind against a former Hero of Altare.
A nice touch of romance amongst all the exhausting battles, as Sivana must figure out who it is she really wants to pursue or even be pursued by, as both young men are friends and she could be the person to destroy their friendship. Ari even has a touch of his own love life getting a new chance to grow, as even his own father soon finds out that some humans can be trusted and they are not all link thieves, as he used to call Siv. Wild and tame gryphons will meet in the middle and Siv will be the catalyst that may change the way the Altarians treat wild gryphon families and steal their young to train for war. First they must survive and with Crown Prince Isaac wanting her dead now, as well as having spies in every camp and on every side, it is nearly impossible to get proof of his actions that the king himself may actually listen to. Ari and Siv have both overcome so much to get to where they are now, that they will never give up, no matter how hard the fight becomes. They know they could die at any moment and she had loads of nights seeing them both die when they faced the largest of the eldrafan! Glory will be there for the taking for those who are the victors in this war, a war brought about by a treacherous prince and drawing al into his evil plans. People and gryphons will die and Siv will see at first hand the loss of people she knows, but still have to carry on. She and Ari must follow orders, but they also have their own secret objective to achieve and only the Gods know if they will succeed! A fantastic read and I couldn’t put it down, from start to finish. I can’t wait to read the last book in the series, there was so much heartbreak in this one that the small slivers of romance and friendships helped to level the playing field. Lots of surprising outcomes and Ari gets to crow a bit with pride in the end, with all the fish he could want. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Sivana's 3rd year finds her & her friends forced to join the war early. She experiences the hardships of being on a battle front but the author keeps the telling age appropriate (which I appreciated as I didn't want more than that, either).
It's refreshing having a heroine who does heroic things, but isn't a bad*ss or superhero - just a person who wants to do what's right. She does get some help from the gods, but it's because of her compassion for their creations as opposed to being born The Special™
A pleasant change & it's going to be fun seeing them figure out their new roles in the final book!
*Content includes some kissing, but nothing graphic or inappropriate
This was a great addition to the series! The war storyline was different than the previous books, and I enjoyed it. I’m excited to see what’s going to happen next.
I received Gryphon Rider Academy: Year 3 by Elise Hennessy through BookFunnel and I highly recommend this and the rest of the series. To support a war on two fronts, the military is relying on drafted soldiers and half trained gryphon rider cadets to join a dangerous strike force and tasked to carry and unstable mage into combat. Back home, politics and infighting have split the nation in half. Many support Crown Prince Isaac's reach for power. Because she is a female Gryphon Rider some hope Sivana doesn't survive the Storm Front but along with fighting current battles she will also fight to stay alive to graduate as the first knighted female gryphon rider. Ari, her gryphon, have overcome too much to back down now. This series is available on Amazon and I highly recommend.
Gryphon Rider Academy: Storm Front is just what I want in a story. A kickass protagonist Sivana (Sivvy, for short) and Ari her Gryphon. Instead of focusing on school and the pitfalls found there. The army inducted the students early into the war to bolster their forces. And Sivi of course was ready to show everyone that she and Ari was ready to show the world that a mere slip of a girl and a blind Gryphon would not, could not be ignored.
Here's a couple of quotes, 2 of 'em between Ari and Sivvy that I found amusing:
“When I said I volunteered to mentor you, it was more a ‘voluntold’ to pick one of the three of you. You were the highest ranked.”
“You owe me so many salmon,”
“Yes! I want a parade in our honor and buckets full of gold.” “What would you even do with that much gold?” “I guess I’ll give them to you and hope you’ll spend them on the lifetime of salmon you owe me,” he said."
“The moment Ari and I have trained for is here. We’re heading to war.” This is an incredible series and after that ending in book two I was anxious to dive in and it did not let me down. Instead of returning to the academy, the cadets are sent to the front line to help defend against the war! It’s fast paced , action packed and whilst all is not as it seems Ari and Sivana must fight to stay alive and make it back in one piece. The world building continues to enthrall and there is plenty of surprises and twists, some you will not see coming. It’s an incredible darker journey in this third book but it is every bit as awesome and gripping as the previous two and I didn’t want it to finish. Our pair have come on an incredibley hard journey but like true friendship this cannot be beat down! I am excited to read book four!
In year 3 of the story, Silvana Walker and her gryphon Arimus are about to put their training into action and participate in the war. The cadets are being sent to the front line to provide a defense! Silvana is driven to be the first knighted female gryphon rider to graduate, so she will be putting her heart into everything they are doing to be successful. Action-packed and full of surprises, this story line will keep the reader fully invested in this exciting segment of the story. Well-written with wonderful characters to cheer for, you will not be able to put this story aside for long until you find out where it is taking you and who will survive.
Liked the book, but 75% of it is nothing but one long war - the day to day drudgeries sprinkled with a few battles. *yawn* People who love that kind of stuff will adore this installment. Personally, I would have preferred if it had been cut back to the highlights. The first was good, though, and the ending was wonderful! It wrapped up the overall arc of the first three books very nicely with an ending that promises new adventures in the future!
*I am invested enough that I HATED the king's decision over final placement for Mateo vs Sivana, even though realistically, I understand it*
Ok so that cliff hanger at the end of book two had me itching for this book to come out. It's no secret that I'm a fan of this series, and this book did not disappoint. There is not a dull moment, though there are plenty of emotional ones. I am so pleased with this happy ending, and curious about the happenings of book 4!
I was offered an advanced copy of this book for my honest opinion, and I was honestly waiting to read this book anyway. This was totally a win win situation for me. And a fabulous read.
Sivana Walker, first female grpyhon rider, and Ari, a blind gryphon, continue to break boundaries and challenge norms. Given the war with the Rathi, the cadets are moved to the front and engage in real battle. As Sivana wars with the weight of the Mother's and Lord Orion's dictates, she also wars with avoiding Crown Prince Isaac's machinations and her conflicted feelings for Prince Mateo and nobleman Acton Weslecker. The writing is fabulous and the plot is so good. This is one of the best fantasy series I have read. 5/5 stars
Although there is one more book, this is a good stopping point for the series. Everything seems to have wrapped up and the next book is a bonus. I don't mind that I have to wait 9 months for it's release.
Still a clean read with the romantic storyline being garnish instead of the icing.
I did struggle at times throughout the series with some of the author's sentences. The point just wasn't clear, or I couldn't follow what was being said. I had a hard time keeping track of all of the characters as well. But, overall a great series!
I am invested in this series now, the gryphons and their riders. Sivana's quest and recurring nightmare with no answers in sight two gods who speak in riddles and offer her little answers to her questions. This book explores going into battle and the losses that come with it. The comraderie and loyalty of the riders and their gryphons who fight together and for each other. I enjoy reading about Ari and Valtora and their relationship, which encompasses Sivvy also as his rider. Being able to know what each gryphon is thinking gives you a better understanding of the gryphons personalities. Mirielle is a favourite next to Ari and Valtora. Who wouldn't want to be a gryphon rider?
Instead of returning to school, Ari and her year mates are sent out to bolster the fronts and defend their country. But of course things are not as they seem and Ari must learn to be a rider earlier then expected and survive her time in her new posting. Lots of fun to read and full of action, surprises, intrigue, and funny scenes here and there. Enjoyed the story and trying to guess what might come next. And cannot forget the problem of Crown Prince Isaac and his bid to rule.
A long read took me a week, but well worth it. More world building, more characters, lots of action and lots of questions answered. Lovely to see Siviana get the accolades she deserved, plus get her man and many friends joining her in her future venture since graduating. Look forward to the next book which follows her and her Wild Gryphon Flight.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow. we have action, suspense and some twist. This book did not disappoint it was just as good as book 1 and 2. Silvana and her friends are sent straight to the war instead of back to the academy. What will happen? Can Ari fight like the other gryphons in the war? Can Silvana and her friends survive? Can wait for the next book to see what happens.

Well I found this series by accident and couldn't have been more surprised with it. I found it well written, a hazzard to my health as I wasn't able to put it down. Definitely no sleep for me.... and such an engaging story that I can't wait for the next book .
Definitely worth reading and catches your imagination from the start. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.
This is not a stand alone so make sure to read the first 2 books. As plots come to light and war is fought we get more answers and discover new things. I love the new side characters introduced. I hate giving things away so I enjoyed book 1 and 2 and book 3 didn't disappoint. So keep reading!
Sivy and Ari must continue to do the God's work. War is imminent. All hands are called to the front. Sivy and Ari must fulfill the vision granted to them from the mother or all will be lost. Still loved that Sivy is still the underdog. One can't help but fall in love with Ari.
I absolutely loved reading this story. Our main star Sivana has so much growth throughout the series and I have absolutely loved joining her journey. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I’m completely addicted to this series.
This is a satisfying conclusion to a well-structured fantasy. The bad guys are even badder, and the teen angst resolves into mature relationships. The fighting is well described, and the intrigue and secondary plots are well managed.
Storm Front, third in the Gryphon Rider Academy series does not disappoint! From Academy,to be thrust into the sacrifices of wartime, Savanna and Ari face some of their toughest challenges yet! Can not wait for number 4!
A true successor to the animal bond fantasy greats has been found here. These three books have a fabulous plot, exciting action, and compelling characters. Very well written! I highly recommend trying it for yourself if you love fantasy.
This book series is brilliant. I cant believe I waited so long to finally read them but I always believe certain media finds me at the right times. I’m genuinely so impressed by this series and the ideas within the book. Not only is the general idea of gryphons something that is new and diverse, it is written unbelievably well. Different than your typical dragon stories! And this is a feminist book. The main character is a girl tasked with a tough job of being a chosen for a God who historically had represented the man. But no, Sivanna Walker takes her task and absolutely bodies everyone in her path. She’s such a strong character while also keeping her empathy. Her friend group is also amazing and I love found family tropes so much. I simply cannot wait for the next book in the series. I have read hundreds of books in my life time but only 13 books are 5 stars for me, and this series is definitely one of them. I’m impressed beyond belief.
Elise is a craftsman of the written word, weaving a tale so intricate and complex that it becomes YOUR world and you are experiencing it right alongside the characters portrayed! Truly spectacular and masterfully crafted! Well done!
Enjoyed this series and many loose ends were tied up in this book after the war between the Altarians and the Rathas. Sivana and Ari meet some difficult challenges with beginning of a live story for both of them.
Sivana and Ari are back and this book is just as action filled as the previous ones. They are headed to the front and things are not quite as they seem once they get there.
