Ari and I must establish something to last for years to come. Wild Flight.
The new, fragile alliance we have with the wild gryphons will be challenged from all sides, as the concept of Wild Flight changes what we believed about the gryphons and who they Link with.
While Ari is busy tending to his family, both wild and tame, I help train the newest cadets at the Gryphon Rider Academy. I see hope for a future where only the most compassionate men and women earn the opportunity to Link with a gryphon. For the first time, the yearlings will select their riders.
When a man who is less tolerant assumes command of the gryphon knight corps, it appears that he is intent on forcing all gryphons to remain war steeds. I will fight to keep Wild Flight free, and I have my friends and a whole flock of gryphons to help along the way.
Dragon Riders of Pern meets Song of the Lioness in the final book of this YA fantasy series in which a pair of underdogs rewrite what’s possible in a formerly all-boys military academy and beyond. If you like determined heroines, iron-clad friendships, and majestic creatures, then you’ll love Gryphon Rider Academy!
Elise Hennessy is an author of young adult fantasy full of adventure and found family. She holds a master’s degree in journalism and enjoys crafting unique stories. When Elise is not busy writing, she’s trying to reduce her prodigious TBR list. She lives in Texas with her family and is owned by two cats.
Nothing bad just kinda boring. There is a bit of interest and a touch of excitement that starts around the 35% mark, then again at the 65% mark but other than that, this book just puddles along with Sivana and the gryphons. Even Acton isn’t involved much at all. Sadly, he’s relegated to that all too common trope of cardboard male who is only on page to support the all powerful female.
Still, it is a nice wander through the world if someone just enjoys something easy and non-threatening to one’s sleep.
*side note*. Could we address that weird cover?!? It looks like they’ve taken a doll’s head from Stephen King’s arsenal and pasted it on a random body! It’s CREEPY!
This is book four of the Gryphon Rider Academy series and focuses on sole female gryphon rider, Knight-Lieutenant Sivana (Sivvy to Ari) Walker and her blind gryphon Ari (Arimus), after the events at Altare. She and Ari managed to get the assistance of the wild gryphons, under his long estranged father’s protection, to join them in battle and ensure victory. Now, after a number of events proclaiming them as Heroes of Altare, they are returning to the academy, where she is leaving Ari to bond with Sunset, who is part of the Wild Flight and their Skymother, to be able to have a family together. The Wild Flight live in the mountains close to Fortress Aerie, at the edge of civilisation and some chose to return there to roost. Ari drops her off close to the Aerie, but not close enough to walk, as tired as she is, but she is soon found by Acton Weslecker, her former fellow student and now knight like her and hopefully her husband to be soon, and his gryphon Ironfeather. Whilst Ari is busy, she can get on with plans to build a new place for the Wild Flight gryphons who wish to choose riders, near the fortress, on a half mountain they decided upon. She is in charge of getting the stables built and housing for humans, from Ellie’s plans. It would be the start of a whole new experience, where wild gryphons would choose their riders and not the other way round! It would no longer be only the rich and entitled that could become gryphon riders, but anyone with the correct temperament, including many girls drawn by the success of Sivana.
Her new recruitment role had gotten agreement from the military that they would no longer steal baby gryphons from the wild to force to link with human riders. The wild ones willing to become part of the military and to protect the kingdom, would become part of the Wild Flight, with the humans attached to the Second Gryphon Flight. The biggest flight to include riders, tamers and trainers, to prepare new riders and the recruitment of new gryphons. Sivvy was on the recruitment side, especially with her ability to link to all gryphons and wild ones whose links had been broken by splitting up bonded pairs, as babies and mothers were poached often with no regard to their family, since the military thought of them as animals to be used to help defeat the eldrafn. The new military agreement meant former bonded pairs, split by war, could be reunited and their young could be kept with them for longer, before being added to the Wild Flight. Ari and Sunset’s baby Novali, is at the age younglings were usually taken for training, but they managed to get that extended from five months to one year of age. But this time, they would have a choice at one year of age to choose to Link with a cadet rider, or not! That was her wish as Lord Orion’s Chosen! Over fifty new younglings had been born this year, helped by linked pairs being reunited, which has made High Command salivate. Not all will become war mounts and there will be additional change to the Fortress, as it opens its doors to the Military School of Engineering, as proposed by Ellie, where students on scholarships could study and sign up for five years’ service after their studies were competed. The wild ones are still lead by Roshawk (Skylord) and Valtora (Matriarch), who chose the new location, but there are still older mother gryphons who are wary of humans. They need to be on best behaviour in the coming days as they are introduced to new hopeful riders.
There would be no third years at the academy this year, as those who had suffered the battles had been promoted to squires to reinforce the Storm Front. Most of Sivvy’s Kite Flight are back with her at the academy, apart from two lost in battle. Her father, now the Marshall of the academy, takes her to see their names on the plaques of fallen riders, on the wall opposite all those who graduate form the academy. They will both have the dubious honour of adding to those walls and knowing the pain it will bring. Word of all the changes at the Gryphon Rider Academy hit the headlines, after the first batch of ten new students are sent home, calling all of the changes badly decided upon and that matters should have been left as done previously, and the secret of the new eldrafn birds, Hvit (Hvitorden) and Revna, was also revealed to much dismay. The birds are part of the gods gift, a rebirth of the eldrafn race, with Revna being the ambassador and first of her kind, whose rider will become the Chosen of Idunn and have to help a surly goddess. Everything Sivvy and Ellie were bringing to the school has been trashed by both papers in the capital, causing more hate for Sivvy and her new gryphon recruitment rules. Older gryphon riders at the school even agree with the papers reports and cause tensions to escalate. Sivvy receives a warning from her previous commandant, telling her the Paragon’s gryphon had died and a new Paragon was about to take over, one who hated Sivvy from the outset and had wanted her executed for linking with a gryphon! She has until the end of this first year to get at least forty gryphons to link with new riders, from the original class of sixty, of which Roshawk and Valtora have already knocked back eighteen. She will need to bring in more students to fill their ranks and hope enough choose a rider, or her changes will be dropped!
Of course, the finale of this series wouldn’t be complete with danger and enemies, with Sivana leading the charge to keep her gryphons and friends safe. The new Paragon has no understanding of the differences between wild gryphons and those stolen and forced to link and become war mounts in the past. He is unhappy with her running of the gryphon rider training and demotes her, leaving Sharde to take her place, with a demand of at least twelve improvements to be made immediately! There are threats to the new batch of younglings, with a former foe of Sivana long thought dealt with, back to hurt her and those she cares for as part of the wild ones and the future of Wild Flight. Her search for the young pyromancer who helped them in battle, has gone unanswered, but when she does finally find her location, a shocking discovery brings her brother Nate into danger as well. Unlikely allies and some unexpected visits from Lord Orion and Glorium, which never give her direct answers to her pleas, but do come to help in unusual ways. There will be loss, but also some joyous news as new links are made, and a few human romances take the next step towards theirs. Shocking events for Sivana and her friends to try and sort out, with a little bit of help from Five and Chance, which leads to some characters continuing in a new series. Lots of family news but also heartache, as all face hard decisions and take action to ensure their role in the future is decided for the best. I received an ARC copy of the book form BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
So funny to imagine the path of these books. the first one was honestly so far away from what I wanted at the time that I genuinely had little to no interest in continuing it. but then when I needed something smaller to listen to in between larger books to break up monotony, I returned to this series, rereading the first one and reading the other three. and while I don't see myself ever counting this among my all time faves, I confess it's got a special place in my heart now.
The first three books made for an excellent trilogy with a fair and balanced raising of stakes across them, and this book is an extended epilogue that dealt with the fallout from the trilogy in a way that felt really well earned and realistic. Basically, after Sivana did the things she did and proved to the world that female gryphon riders were accepted by the gods, and that there are better ways to get gryphon-bound partners than stealing them from flocks in the wild, she's basically completely upheaved everything at Gryphon Rider Academy and that pissed a lot of traditionalists off.
So, this book mostly deals with the fallout from the other books as she deals with the new, more refined bonds with the gryphons, the reintroduction of a different subspecies of gryphon, and wraps back around at some of the people who had a problem with her from the first book.
It's so weird, it's so not what I was looking for at the time, and it's never going to be some massive global phenomenon, but this book series, this quaint, enjoyable book series about gryphon riders has reinvigorated my passion for reading the less well known stuff out there. Not only did I come to love the gryphons in this story more than the dragons in Fourth Wing (There are some comparisons to be made, to be fair), but I thought the way the birds were handled was cute as heck. I wasn't expecting that.
It took some time to get into it but by the end, I was REALLY into these books. I Still don't think they're 5 stars on the page but they're 5 stars in my heart.
If you're looking for YA Gryphon stories, honestly you don't get much better than this. Again, it's not going to go down in history as a classic or anything but it hit a lot of the right notes, especially by the end. I'm genuinely sad to not be returning to this world even though this 4-book series was quite satisfying. it could have worked just as a trilogy but the fourth book grew on me and served as an excellent epilogue.
I want to give this a higher score becuase I got more and more into it by the end, but I think that each book getting increasing scores (3 stars, then 4, 4, and 4), makes sense. if I was to review the story on the whole it'd get 5 stars, a solid 9+ outta ten.
For some reason I had trouble getting back into the series. It might have been as simple as the fact that the MC on the cover didn't match the age that she protrayed in the book 🤔 I know that seems crazy and yeah I know she started out young but jeez 4 years have happened. Anyway once I got back into the action I really enjoyed the rest of it! It definitely looks like this was the conclusion to Gryphon Rider Academy, but several new characters were introduced. I really liked Cash and it looks like Elise Hennessey might possibly write a spinoff book just for Cash's sake.
And yeah I some quotes, that amused me:
“And perhaps I could put your mind at ease with a secret,” he added. “Because what is more disappointing than calling on a god and not getting a secret?”
Our gazes met, and I set my lips, trapping my thoughts within the cage of my teeth before words could leap out and form in a way that I would regret.
I’m writing this review after just finishing the final book. I soaked up this tale, all 4 books, in a week. I’m a voracious reader. The storyline kept a great pace. The characters felt mostly solid and not too rushed save a few. With this being the final book, I did feel like a lot of the ending wrap up was rushed, however. And many questions were left very much unanswered. I don’t know if that’s to prompt the reader to continue in the next spin offs of Altare Universe or not, but it left me with many more questions. I personally don’t like that style of ending. I want things to feel like there’s a sense of closure. This particular book left a lot to be desired in that regard. But to each their own. Others may appreciate and celebrate such an ending. 4 stars because it didn’t give me closure and there were a few moments where editing was overlooked. I’d recommend it still.
Gryphon rider academy accomplishes many feats, delivering always great characters and progression. It has been a joy to see Wild Flight and creatures alike grow and set future for more legends, while a kingdom changed forever. All because a girl loved her blind gryphon too much.
Five stars to the four books of Gryphon Rider Academy, all full with perfect story telling and world building. There’s purpose behind each chapter and growth within each character. Everything ties perfectly and closes with a hopeful ending.
These books deserve to be in every bookstore and library and in every school’s book fair. If only more people knew about them, I’m sure it could turn into a very popular story. I only wish I hadn’t read them so fast, but I’m sure I’ll be rereading them in no time.
Enjoyable, but not *quite* as good as the first three in the series. Firstly, this final book was a lot more intrigue than action. The storyline didn’t really pick up the pace until chapter 27, which is about the 3/4 mark of the book. The only reason this book held up so well was the foundation the first 3 books laid down before it. Secondly, this book was riddled with editing errors. I don’t recall this being an issue in the previous books, but in this respect, book 4 definitely read like it was released by an indie author, whereas the other didn’t. However, in spite of what may seem these few scathing criticisms, I did enjoy this conclusion to the series. Ari & Sivana will forever have a soft place in my heart.
This series has been one hell of a wild ride and our beloved characters have been through so much and you would have thought that with the war now over things would calm down BUT how silly of me to think that!! Sivana and Ari are working together to keep things going and experience several ups and downs along the way but with all the action, all the excitement and all of the trouble sent their way, the author does an incredible job of bringing it all together so we got a satisfying ending. Incredible world building, addictive, action packed and exciting storylines, wonderful characters , I really hope that we do see more from this incredible world.
I read the first 3 books in this series early in 2023 and eagerly marked my calendar for book 4, which released Dec 31 2023. Books 1 and 2 satisfy the Academy fiction/scrappy girl surviving in a Man's world itch, book 3 is full of derring do and exotic locales, and book 4? Well, book 4 has baby animals. Sivana and the human and Gryphon contingents of Wild Flight work to realize change and improve relations between the gryphons and the Gryphon Ryder Academy. Meanwhile, the baby gryphons and eldrafn steal the show. A fun and enjoyable read.
This series just keeps getting better. The characters pull you in. The story is engaging with twists you do not see coming. Many times in a series, I finish a book and decide I do not need yo read the rest of the series, not so with Gryphon Rider Academy. The author keeps adding more characters and another level of story so that keeps you wanting to read to find out what happens next. This is a clean story with a slow burn romance that happens organically for both gryphons and riders alike. I am excited for October to read the next book.
This seemed like a rambling of a scattered mind. There was tons of drama that was hanging for ages. What was the point? I don't know. While the other 3 books were so well thought out, well paced, with loving characters, this was just the same loving characters being sidelined. Anyway, I wish I hadn't read this book and my love for all of the characters wasn't tainted. :(
After surviving war and being declared a hero, you'd think Sivana would finally catch a break but it wasn't to be... Despite the rocky time in this book, we got a nice conclusion to most of the storylines. While the ending did feel a little rushed, it also felt like there was an opening for continuations featuring other characters. Amazing series, and a must read.
Although this book is listed as a young adult read, as a 58yo reader, I was entranced by the story of Ari and Sivvy. From their first meeting in book one 'til now, the themes of friendship, love, and fierce loyalty never wanes. I'm looking forward to more books to transport me back to Altare!
Last book in this series and what a book. Lots of action, stolen baby gryphons, linking of humans and gryphons, romance, engagements and a marriage. Great world building, introducing new supernaturals, gods and communities. Look forward to more stories from this world.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book series has brought me great joy to read. The ups and downs of Sivvey and Ari's story has been great. I look forward to reading more of Elise Hennessy's stories and maybe getting to see more of the characters from the Gryphon Rider Academy series in them.
Gryphon Rider Academy Year 4 by Elise Hennessy is the final book in the series. I highly recommend and found the book was very hard to put down. In this book the new, fragile alliance with wild gryphons will be challenged from all sides as the concept of Wild Flight changes what is believed about them. Silvana will fight to keep Wild Flight free along side her friends and a flock of gryphons.
This book reads like a beginning. I loved reading what happened to some of my favorite characters. There's heart ache, triumph, intrigue and so many unsolved mysteries that I know there has to be several spin offs planned. In all, a pretty good ending/begining to an adventurous series.
Action packed, neatly tied loose ends. This is a lovely finish to this chapter of story telling. I am hopeful that the parallel stories are as enjoyably filled with thoughtful detail. The characters have been well crafted and are 3D in their interactions and emotions.
I have to say that I had tears in my eyes quite a few times while reading this book. The story of Sivana and Arimus is complex and fulfilling. The outlier characters meant just as much as the main characters. There aren’t many books that I’ve loved like this, in fact I can probably count them on two hands. Well done Elise Hennessy!!
This was a very solid series from beginning to end. Well rounded character development, engaging plot line. Initially i did not see a need for a fourth book and was very well satisfied with the way the series ended even with the bonus of the spin off. There were a few typos throughout all four books and for once it didn’t jerk me out of the world.
What a way to end a series. Yet I am bummed that it is over. Truly enjoyed the
whole series. Sivvy and Ari make an unforgettable team. The link that they share transcends all love that a human and an animal can have for each other. I will continue to read Elise Hennessy in all that she writes.
I personally liked the first three books a lot more. This seems more like the bonus book some series make to add random side stories and/or additional information to what already was a decently wrapped up story at the time. It's not bad but it's not adding to what I personally think was good about the "trilogy".
Our heroes are back and fighting to keep their vision of the gryphon riders against everyone. Trouble, action, intrigue, and people causing issues made for a good read. Enjoyed watching it all play out. And loved watching the gryphons too. How would it all end had me glued to the end.
The final in the gryphon rider academy series. Could have used a primer on who everyone was, as it's been a while! There was a lot happening and quite a few subplots, so at times it got messy. Teed up several other series and a crossover. A solid ending.
Lovely young adult fantasy. Beautiful world building. Can't wait to watch this world continue to grow. I am looking forward to the spin-offs and am grateful for that chance of further crossovers.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book series. I loved all the characters and each one was highly developed and identifiable. Thank you so much and look forward to reading the continuation of this series.
I absolutely loved this series!! I waited for months for the release of this final book in the Groton Rider Academy. However, I would love to have a couple novellas about Sivana and Acton, as well as Ari and Sunset, a couple years into their marriage.
I absolutely LOVED this book!!! It was the perfect ending to the series if we have to end it here. I'm sad the Gryphon series is over, but I'm excited that there are still books in this world, so I don't have to say goodbye to all of the characters permanently.
While its been a long time since I was a YA, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. The world building and storyline was descriptive without being overdone. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
The book was good but did not feel like a conclusion to the series. There are still many questions left unanswered and some plots that started but did not finish playing out. I hope there is another book coming that will finish the existing plots.
