Even when Corin does something right, it all goes wrong. Now he is on the run from criminal gangs and the law.
With danger coming from every direction, can he save the lives of two children as well as his own? It isn't going to be easy, but when has life in the corporation controlled cities ever been.
G. R. Matthews is a British fantasy and science fiction author best known for Seven Deaths of an Empire (Solaris, 2021), a grimdark epic praised for its visceral combat, dual perspectives, and rich world-building inspired by Roman and Celtic history.
Born in Wiltshire, surrounded by chalk hills, white horses, and ancient stone circles, he grew up immersed in landscapes steeped in ancient myth. Matthews began his publishing journey with self-published works including The Stone Road—the first of The Forbidden List trilogy drawing on ancient China—and the Corin Hayes underwater sci-fi thrillers, before breaking into traditional publishing with Seven Deaths of an Empire.
A passionate gamer as well as a self-taught guitarist, Matthews brings discipline, imagination, and resilience to his storytelling, crafting tales of loyalty, honour, and political intrigue. He continues to expand his fictional worlds with upcoming projects such as The Silencing of the North, while engaging readers with his blend of history, myth, and character-driven drama.
Book three in the Corin Hayes series - and I liked it even more than the second! This time it all changes around a bit for Corin, as in the first time for forever he actually tries to take on responsibility for other people than himself. This is a real challenge for him, as he is usually only interested in getting enough money to life, and finding some beer and a whiskey to chase it.
If you read the authors other series (Forbidden List, which are set in an alternative China) you can find some links, though you don't need to read either to understand the other. I definitely enjoyed the difference in pace and setting it brought.
In this story we get to explore m,ore of that big world under the sea, and see just how different the cities can be. Also we see Corin grow up a bit more - or rather try to become a bit more like the man he was before his life derailed. I absolutely love his snark and sarcasm, and enjoy following him on his journey through life, and all the shit that happens to him on the way... ;)
This series still feels almost like an Urban fantasy in it's fast pace and witty banter, has some mysteries, some dystonia, some SciFi and a lot of adventure to keep the reader well entertained!
I for one got sucked in once more right from the start, and hardly could put it down!
I'm very happy that the author send me an arc. I was impatiently waiting for part 3 in the Corin Hayes series and I was not disappointed! In this book Corin got into trouble again and I loved that the setting was so different. I really enjoyed to read more about the underwater world and learning about a whole new culture. I found the characters introduced in this book very interesting and I'm hoping to see some of them again... The only problem I have is that I still haven't learned more about Corin his background and what happened in his past... now I'll have to wait for book 4, which I'll do happily! I'm a big fan of this author so anything he'll publish next I will be reading...!
Corin's back in trouble, and, as usual, he's only got himself to blame. But then, while he may not be the smartest, the strongest, or the best looking, you can at least depend on him to do the right thing. Now, I don't mean that he makes good decisions for his health or ones that are necessarily helpful for those around him, but his heart's in the right place. And that's why we love to follow him. That, and to see how he gets out of the latest scrapes.
This time he's stuck in a gang war in one of the other underwater nations, one clearly descended from China (no surprise, if you are familiar with the author's other series). Taking Corin to a new type of environment (though there are still subs and fish suits and boxes) expands the scope of the series (and, in fact, this one is a bit longer). For the first time, Corin gets some sidekicks and allies, adding more layers to his character, as well. His trademark snark is still there, but we see a new nurturing side to Corin now that he's not just running, hiding, or fighting for/by himself.
Overall, this makes for a different and deeper story than the previous two entries in the series, which make it an even more satisfying read. I wasn't sure at times that it was going to work, because there were times when the pace--part of what makes this series so fun--dipped a bit, but it does.

This is the 3rd book in the Corin Hayes story and the best one so far.
Corin continues to have the knack of finding himself in trouble through a combination of bad luck and his inability to keep his mouth shut.
As with the previous books, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic underwater world where bacon is a prohibitively expensive luxury!
The story starts similarly to the previous book with Corin taking on, a seemingly apparent, simple job from his employer. This leads to all sorts of deadly escapades, with a nice twist and change of direction introduced mid-way, whilst Corin tries to keep himself and, this time, others alive.
If you like fast-paced action with witty one-liners then I would highly recommend this book.
In this 3rd book of the Corin Hayes series we follow Corin to some very culturally different cities in his underwater world. We also see his slightly more tender side as he takes 2 children under his wing in a daring rescue.
He's still the same old Corin though: sardonic, self depreciating and the master of making dodgy decisions.
Great pacing & excellent world building - looking forward to more!!
Jumping right from book two into book three, a brand spanking new Corin Hayes adventure! I can’t help myself. Corin is awesome!
And I got an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review of it.
Corin really is awesome though. 🙂
Corin is at it again. He gets himself into some serious trouble at home, so his guardian angel Derva finds him a job for him and his trusty Fish-Suit to get him out of the way for a while.
So, as only Corin can, he gets into even bigger trouble while on that job. He’s tasked with finding a precious artifact from a sunken container ship. Sounds normal, but when the box he finds is empty they accuse him of stealing the goods. And by ‘they’ I of course mean the Chinese mafia of this particular section of underwater dystopian Earth. Whoops!
So, while he’s locked up in their prison he meets two other prisoners, a 5 year old girl and her teenage nanny. Being Corin, he plans a daring escape, and of course, breaks the kids out too. And thus, a grand adventure full of submarine chases and Fish-Suit antics is had! He miiiiiiight have ended up in the middle of an underwater, heavily traditional, limited to use of ancient weapons……. gang war. Because of course he did. This is Corin Hayes we’re talking about.
I liked this one even more than the first two, which I liked quite a lot. This one explores an entirely different part of the world than either of the first two, which was cool. I like how Corin goes to a different place each time, but always ends up right where he started nonetheless. His own table, where nobody gives a fuck about his story.
This particular one felt like a stronger story than the one before it. I’m not sure I can explain this well, but it just felt better written to me. The plot was more engaging, and while I have always liked Corin himself quite a lot, this one had other characters that I quite enjoyed too. It was harder to put this one down, and I was finding myself making excuses to sit down and read far more often with it. Not that I didn’t with the first two, but in this case I had a lot to do besides reading, and found myself reading nonetheless. That’s a formula for a pretty great book for me!~
My favorite Corin Hayes book to date. Submarine Noir at its finest. By the third book of any series you are either invested or wouldn't have picked it up. that said the writing is concise and feels more confident for it compared to the previous books. Corin continues in his self depreciating anti hero role never quite losing, but never getting ahead or doing more than coping with what life has thrown at him. this series really should be a depressing read but is surprisingly humorous and the author has a light touch and good balance in his writing. I await the next.
I liked it more than the second book, but it took me a while to get there.
For a long time it seems like the plot basically copies its predecessor and in the broadest strokes it does. But the story develops in a completely different direction and manages to develop the world much more than the first two books did. The overall mood tends more towards spy thriller than the adventure tone the first books had and that is good for the overall series. Besides that, there are still major problems here. I am amazed how it is possible to have an entire series with one named character and two supporting names and only minimal continuity between books.
Then again, that makes this series so appealing, the entry is easy and all the books are solidly entertaining.

I think this is the best Corin Hayes book of all. G. R. Matthews has really hit his stride in this third installment in Hayes's story. The writing was tight, the editing was very good, not for a self-published book, but for any book. The story moved quickly from point to point with very little if any downtime in between. I have a hard time these days keeping my attention on books, but not this one; this one I couldn't put down.
Basically, the story starts out because Hayes has made a really bad decision. Surprise, surprise. His impulsiveness is going to get him killed one day, probably sooner than later. His employer decides to farm him out to another city to get him away while they work things out.
Of course, he finds trouble. he always does.
He's forever trying to do the "right thing" and it's forever backfiring on him
Impulsiveness.
If you want to find out the details and how things turn out, you're going to have to buy or borrow this book.
Another fast paced, brilliant outing of Corin Hayes. Just when you think he's got the job done, something inevitably has and does go wrong. Though you won't go wrong reading this.
I can't believe after all that I have to wait for the next Corin book! I'd say it's my favourite of the 3 so far! I love all the oriental tradition and customs anyway so it was really nice to see them amalgamated into a modern story like that. Corin definitely has a way if getting himself into trouble and his smart mouth is entertaining from start to finish 0
