Humanity has fallen….
Aberrant creatures have grown in number and taken over the lands. Winged elves fill the forests, Night ones have overtaken human cities, Mine Folk have taken the under lands and Wildlings are everywhere in between
In the absence of humanity, peace was life throughout the lands
However, darkness is on the rise, at the nexus of good (light) and evil (dark) is a lone female elf druid (Kayriss) standing in its way. The balance between light and dark is at its tipping point and the battle for supremacy stretches Kayriss thin.
Many wanted peace, but many more craved war.
How will Kayriss maintain the balance?

The Darktouched is the first of 5 planned books in the Darkness Rises series, with books I'm calling 'side quests' about fan favourite characters alongside.
These books, along with the 'Humanity Falls' series that began in my other book 'What We Leave Behind' will complete an epic century-long arc that I know readers will love
I loved this book, I’m still a bit emotional so bear with me…
The characters you get to meet in this world, is so different from other books I have read thus far. We have elves, we had badgers and beavers owls etc and different species depending where they were from. They speak and everything!
We follow the journey of different characters as there’s something happening, strange happenings!
Pretty much every chapter leaves you needing to know more what happens next, I was shocked at times! I felt warm and fuzzy at moments, I felt so much rage at times I will not get into why cause spoilers, I think I experienced pretty much every emotion during this book.
And I am telling you now, there isn’t that many that can make me feel so many emotions, like my bar is quite high.
So hats off to the author who managed to get me to cry and make me want to physically dive into that world and slap some people.
Now I must wait for the second book of this series..
Firstly, what an adventure… there were moments where I had to re read sentences just to make sure what I was reading was really there!
This is probably one of the best fantasy books I have ever read, the passion that has gone into this book is incredible. The emotions throughout the book were just incredible! I felt every emotion when reading this, I went from laughing, to crying, shocked to scared!
The way in which every character has their on individuality and I was able to connect with them all in different ways. I absolutely adored Kayriss, she is such a strong, fearless main character and ofcourse I can’t forgot the cutest little cub, Ayleigh.
Dave just has his way of, when you open his books you really are hooked on the book 📖 … he is one talented author and I am forever grateful for finding his books!! 📚
Overall, this book is a solid 5 star read for me, the book is extremely compelling, emotional, breathtaking, fast paced and I couldn’t of asked for anything more…. Except…. Another book 😍😍 😂
This is the best book I have ever read. Dave has such a way with writing that is almost poetic and hits you right in the feels.
I absolutely loved the variety of characters, all absolutely incredible in their own way.
My man Tallin from the Night One's squad is giving huge Rhysand vibes in book 1 of ACOTAR. 🤤
There's action, spice, heart-felt moments, exciting moments, ANXIETY INDUCING MOMENTS, a literal dragon, talking animals, battles, crazed rats, forbidden love, PIRATE OTTERS, and thats just a few of my favourite bits.
I can't WAIT to jump into book 2, 3, 4 & 5 *cries in nerd*
When Dave first asked me if I would edit this book, I will be honest: I was a little dubious. His previous two books (one not published yet) are thriller/horror stories with a splash of fantasy, whereas this book is the first in a planned fantasy series by Dave.
Upon reading, any doubts I had were completely squashed. People rated his first book, What We Leave Behind, a 5-star read; I myself rated it a 4-star. I can say that as the only other person to Dave to read this book, Dave is a better fantasy writer than he is a thriller writer, and he has definitely found his calling. This book has everything you would expect in a fantasy book and fantasy lovers will love it. Something I find fantastic that Dave has achieved with this book is he has made an epic fantasy book into an easy read that can be enjoyed by fantasy beginners too.
I am an avid fantasy reader; it has always been my favourite genre. To be asked to edit this book has been a dream come true for me, and I am beyond proud to have been part of the journey of getting this story out of Dave's head and into the world for you all to experience.
I can't wait to see what people think of it when it is released on Amazon on 21st October.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What. A. Book! This book deserves all the 5-star reviews and more! I genuinely loved the story, the characters, and enjoyed all the world-building. The art is beautiful, and yes, I shed a few tears! I would happily recommend this book to others and have already recommended it to some family and friends.
To begin with, if you haven't read this, I suggest you do so! If you love Fantasy, you'll enjoy this book, especially if you're new to the genre.
What you get: Fantasy, Romance, Little Spice, Multi-POV, Character Art, Dark Themes, Lighthearted moments, Talking Pirate OTTERS, Emotionally charged moments, Battles, did I mention Talking Pirate OTTERS?! A whole soundtrack to enjoy as you read, different styles of reading (readers' choice), Fan Art, and of course, TALKING PIRATE OTTERS!!
This book comes in three parts. In the first third, you can decide how you'd like to read it. Following the three main characters' POVs, you can either read the book normally, or you can follow the individual characters' stories, switching to the second and then third character after finishing the previous chapters.
The level of detail the author provides in the world-building for every character, scene, different sceneries, character emotions, and each piece of plot is excellent, especially with this being the author's first Fantasy genre book. This book is Part One of the Dark Rises series, but it also connects to his first published book WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND,. Dave has thought of everything! (You should definitely read that, too!)
I have only one quarrel with this book: it doesn't have page numbers. When my bookmark fell out a couple of times, I had to find my place again.
What an incredible read this was! Firstly I want to take a moment to appreciate Dave and his creativity with this book. It really is a fantastic piece of literature. Kayriss, an Elven stumbles across an unusual creature… one that was considered gone for ever, a Hu-man: Isaac. She’s drawn to him but doesn’t know why…. Something is changing, she can sense it. But what? She begins her journey to find out with the Hu-man by her side. She discovers a village had been attacked and that a Hu-man was taken… so now there are 2, what can this mean? She sets off to find the Hu-man, known as Elara with the help of an unexpected mix of folk. Can they save Elara, can they stop the evil at work?! Can they avenge those they have lost? No spoilers here!
There are 3 character stories that can be read independently but also intertwine seamlessly- amazing! It’s fast paced and intense. The character details are so well thought, even without the artwork for the book you would can clearly visualise them.
This fantasy story has it all. Myths, legends, stories of old, spells, curiosities, pirate otters, badgers, owls, Mine Folk, Wildings, homes that can walk, frogmen, dragons, evil powers, betrayal, alliances, forbidden love, sacrifice and saviours. Because there are multiple stories within the one, there are so many twists and turns in each one so it really does hold you but it’s not overwhelming. If you love a fantasy then this is an absolute must! If you haven’t read fantasy before- this is an awesome way to start!
I devoured this book in less than 2 days, once you start you won’t be able to put it down.
Wow. Speechless is something I am not often. But this book...this book is something special.
I don't even know where to start this review; how to explain the vivid fantasy world Dave has created and the epic journey they all go on.
The characters were fantastic. I have a special place in my heart for Kayriss but I also adored Elara. They are such distinctive, kick ass personalities. Tallin was an awesome character. Serafin is cool too and I'd like to learn more about her. Speaking of cool...pirate otters!!
The imagery was vivid and beautiful. I laughed, I gasped and I cried. I had shivers, I had nightmares about one part (you know what I mean Dave 😜) I also had waves of calm and hope... and if that sounds silly then just wait til you read the book and you'll see what I mean.
I adored the treasure chest and the ending, oh the ending ❤️
If you're looking for a 5 star read and like any of these: • fantasy • epic journeys and adventures • Lord of The Rings • A Court of Thorns and Roses • A Game of Thrones • The Hunger Games • animals • Pirate otters • an immersive reading experience
Wow just wow !! This is my favourite read of the year but a long chalk! I’m not a fantasy reader so I was dubious about this book! Well was i in for a massive surprise !! This story was so beautifully written! Descriptions and emotion is plentiful without being over complicated. I could not stop reading this epic story of love, family, betrayal and friendship! I cannot recommend this enough! Bring on the next in the series !!
I finished this book yesterday and wanted to give myself the time to process and articulate a review worthy of the story.
If you love fantasy, drama, prophecies, PIRATE OTTERS, epic battles and love against all the odds, then this one is for you!
Dave Haywood creates worlds you want to live in and characters so loveable they will stick with you forever. He has a real talent of setting the scene and his imagery is just beautiful. I could see the sun dappling through the trees, feel the wind and hear the birds as if I was actually in Wood Haven with Kayriss and Ansel.
One aspect of the book I really enjoyed was the transformations both metaphorical and physical that some of the characters went through. Not just black and white, good or evil, but the many shades of grey.
I cannot wait to read more from this world and see where the story takes us next.
Dave Haywood is a master of his craft. A very unique way to read this book, make sure to read according to the authors instructions. You will fall in love with the world that he created. A fantasy that draws you in to a interesting and creative story. This will definitely have your emotions on a rollercoaster ride. Love, thriller, adventure leaves you wanting more! Looking forward to reading more by Dave Haywood.
For starters -- I have feedback specifically for Dave Haywood. I do not like the new cover!!! Bring back the dark cover with the wings!!!! The new cover with the fairy woman on the cover is too common/typical of other fantasy novels and it isn't unique. Just my opinion!
Now to the review. I genuinely loved the story. There are so many unique characters in this that you do not expect. The book comes in three different parts and has several different characters. The pirate otters were my favorite.
Kayriss seems to be the overall main character in this book - and is who I believe to be the fairy on the cover of the book. I really enjoyed her character, and you go through lots of different emotions with her. Love, heartbreak, joy. All the feels.
I never give spoilers in my review so I won't say much more, but I can't wait to see what happens in book two, because I have to know what happens with the purple mist!!! Plus, what is up with the secretive king? And where the hell are the humans. There are so many unanswered questions!
This is a book wrote by a indie author from TikTok
Being a 30 year plus veteran of reading fantasy
The plot itself is different and never been done before for me personally it didn’t hit all the right places etc and in my opinion would be beneficial to those starting their fantasy journey it has a very slow beginning over use of the word nature but this could be recitified by describing the nature sounds instead the book is very heavy so please be careful lol you don’t want to knock yourself out
The characters are different to what I have read before and there is so much you could do with these story lines
I may get some hate from this but to me personally I could not imagine the characters or the world as I am used to in other fantasy novels I have read this is just me personally.
I would have liked to see more character development and world building which could have helped me imagine this world better
And this is the reason why I only gave it 3 stars 🌟
This was such a good fantasy novel. It was so full of adventure and a brilliant page turner that I often forgot that I was reading. The author's writing had me hooked from the very first page and I didn't stop reading until the end as I wanted to know what happened. Overall, a brilliant novel that I highly recommend to other readers. 💝 Thank you to the author for the free kindle download.
The Darktouched by Dave Haywood is a book of magic in itself as the book is split into 3 sections. Section one can be read in two different ways. It is made up of a cycle of 3 POV changes, the author recommends you read all of POV 1, then POV 2 and then POV 3. However it is laid out as a repeating cycle of POV 1, POV 2, POV 3, POV 1, POV 2, POVE 3 etc. Due to reading it on kindle, I read it as it's laid out as it isn't easy to switch chapters. The book has only been formated on kindle into 3 parts, rather than the individual chapters. If it was changed to the chapters then it would be much easier to read the way it is recommended. As it stands I do believe the kindle version lacks accessibility required to get the real experience the author wants. Hopefully this will be updated in the future. However, I do believe that having different ways to read a book adds to longevity, you can reread the book and get an entirely different experience, based on your choice.
The imagery and descriptions of characters are incredible, so much detail is given allowing you to really picture small details of everyone you're reading about. It really adds a whimsical affect to reading, you feel like you’re part of an enchanted world. It almost sends you back to your childhood imagination. It has all the makings of an epic fantasy, however with its call back to human life as we know it and the story line about the fallout shelters etc, it doesn't quite hit that mark for me and instead I would call this a blend of fantasy with sci-fi elements.
The three POVs offered to us are 3 separate characters on the ‘good side’ who face danger from dark beings and mysterious night ones. These characters must come together, with the help of allies and friends, to chase the darkness away whilst united as one. Naturally the first thing this reminds me of is The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as there are strong fellowship vibes throughout. Haywood includes a lot of side characters who all have their own agendas and are individual moving pieces within the story. The first two sections of this book offer heavy lore building and understanding of the world's politics as it were. I half expected there to be a parliament of owls pun in there somewhere, but Haywood luckily doesn’t stoop to my level of humour.
Part three pulled me in instantly, it’s where the real magic of Haywoods writing comes to life. We start with the ‘will they won't they’ yearning between two characters. But betrayals and reveals come in thick and fast. There are gut wrenching, life changing twists that left me gasping with shock. It's almost like Haywood is rewarding us for the heavy toll part two took as we read and understood the intricacies of this world.
The Darktouched is a really interesting take on a dystopian world crossed with the nostalgic fantasy feel. For the first two thirds I was not sure it fit 100% for me, I understand that the set up of the world, the characters and the danger element were important, but my personal preference is for that to take up a shorter amount of the book than it did. However, reading part three was an experience of its own, I was on the edge of my seat in parts and in tears at others. I now cannot wait to read the next book in the series and hope that now we’ve had such a big set up, the pacing of the next book will be more palatable.
The Darktouched is an absolutely captivating fantasy novel that showcases Dave's talent for creating rich, immersive worlds. Set in a realm where humans no longer exist and a diverse range of creatures now share the land, the story follows Kayriss, an Elven who discovers a long-thought-extinct creature—a Hu-man named Isaac. As she embarks on a quest to uncover the mysteries surrounding him, Kayriss is joined by an unexpected group of allies. Along the way, they face betrayals, uncover dark forces, and battle for a world at war.
What stands out in this book is Dave's ability to craft intricate, multi-POV narratives that are fast-paced yet easy to follow, blending action, myth, and vivid character development. The characters themselves are beautifully fleshed out, from the strong-willed Kayriss to the intriguing, enigmatic Elara, and the unexpected pirate otters and other unique beings who populate the world.
A true fantasy lover’s dream (meeeeee!), The Darktouched weaves together elements of myth, magic, sacrifice, and adventure with sharp, evocative prose. Whether you’re a seasoned fantasy fan or new to the genre, this book is an exciting and accessible introduction to epic fantasy. Trust me—you’ll devour it in no time!
My friend, Dave! Thank you for the incredible honour of reading your book ahead of its release. I am truly in awe of your talent and the way you craft stories. Even when stepping outside of your usual genre, you still manage to captivate me, pulling me into the world you've created and keeping me glued to the pages. I can’t wait to read ALL OF YOUR BOOKS! Your ability to weave such immersive, compelling tales is nothing short of magical—I’m eagerly counting the days until your next release!
As a book lover, I like nothing more than to get my hands on a pristine new novel. Many of you will be looking forward to getting hold of this one thanks to the music and visuals Dave has shared. Plus the fact that this is in hardback makes me so happy.
It certainly will not disappoint... This is a remarkable novel that features beautifully developed characters and has a gripping plot. Dave once again invites us all into his amazing imagination as he treats us to the first of his new classic fantasy style thriller series. But the familiarity of his exquisite writing style runs through from the last.
Dave’s attention to detail is mind blowing. He uses words and language I have never heard before, and he can transform simple descriptions into evocative imagery text that lingers in your mind.
Very much a departure from ‘What we Leave Behind’. It’s an epic tale that brings the characters to life in such a believable way. This isn't so dark, but it does still contains a few of those ‘WTF’ moments and a bit of sauce that we have come to expect from Dave. This is such an easy book to get lost in and there is plenty of humour along the way.
If you are a fan of fantasy novels, this is an absolute must-read. The start of a fantastic series and you are all in for a treat.
Dave has knocked it out of the park once again!
...and no spoilers, but the follow up to his debut novel 'What We Leave Behind' (coming soon..) is even better!!
Set in a world where humanity has vanished and nature has claimed everything back, this story imagines what rises when the old world falls.
Lone druid elf Kayriss is the reluctant hero holding back chaos. I liked her quiet strength, and the way she carried fate without ever asking for it. She’s not showy. She's not infallible. She endured, and that made her real. But at times I wanted more internal conflict from her.
The worldbuilding is what shone for me; lush, strange, full of eerie peace and creeping dread. Elves with wings, creatures in the shadows, and ruins swallowed by time. Haywood’s prose isn’t flashy, but it’s confident. It lets the story breathe.
The haunting, atmospheric quality quietly got under my skin. That said, some grammatical issues and a few inconsistencies slowed me down; professional editing would add the final polish this novel needs.
Still, I closed the final page with that quiet ache I always chase: a sense of something ancient moving just beneath the surface. This is a solid start to a series that promises real depth.
Holy hell, He's done it again! Dave has created a whole world of imagination, the links that connect not just the characters in this book but connected to his other 2 books are mesmerising!
The Darktouched is such a beautifully epic fantasy with hints of dystopia and mythology. We follow multiple characters, each one so unique and interesting and then all perfectly connected to each other and the world around them.
There is so much featured in this book, so much that I want to know more of and so much that brings emotions out.
Dave has managed to create a world that's both familiar and breathtakingly unique. He leads us on a path that almost feels linear and then throws us some curve balls!
I am extremely thankful to have read this absolute masterpiece and even more thankful to know that Dave is already working on book 2!
I’m not the biggest fan of modern fantasy, largely because everything I read lately is all romantasy, but this one felt a bit different.
You get the expected level of quality action, with a high-octane finish. There’s romance in this one, too. But this feels fresher, with a new take on the genre.
There’s a Fellowship of the Ring vibe to it, too. Adventure, mystery, sadness and just a dash of terror. If you dislike rats, prepare to hate them even more 🙂
Haywood is a very good writer, he helps you feel immersed and delivers an imaginative and thrilling plot, that’s well-paced and not too long, which is a bugbear I have with a lot of fantasy books.
If you fancy a different take on a well-trodded path, I recommend this one heartily. 🙂🙂🙂
I have rated this book 5 stars. For me personally I really enjoyed it. It was so well done and thought out and it was just everything to me I loved it so much and I can’t wait for the next book.
I was on the edge of my seat at times with anxiety over certain characters and it had my emotions all over the place. It hit me in so many ways. I was lost for words and couldn’t even talk about or find the words through my emotions and tears. Even the sound track in this book I highly recommend listening to before and while reading but also listen again after you read this book the lyrics just hit different and mean so much more than before.
Unfortunately, I had to DNF this as it was advertised as a YA and was reading through to make sure it was suitable for my nephew. However, there was a scene that definitely needed a TW and was informed after that the TW are at the back of the book, which I don't think is suitable when there is an SA scene, I do find it a shame as I was enjoying it, but it disappointed me that it was advertised as something it's not, Which is why I had to give three stars. I also really love the drawing from Amy at the back (the only reason I didn't give this 2 stars) and I hope in the future I can try rereading this as I did enjoy Daves thriller book,
From the opening pages of The Darktouched, I was completely immersed in a world where humanity is a forgotten echo, and new powers have risen to claim the ruins. Dave Haywood crafts a breathtaking, richly detailed landscape teeming with magic, myth, and mystery. Kayriss, the druid at the heart of it all, is a phenomenal character complex, haunted, noble without being naïve. Her struggle to hold the line between light and dark feels deeply personal and epically mythological at once. This book reminded me why I fell in love with fantasy in the first place. It’s not just escapism it’s transformation.
What Dave Haywood has done with The Darktouched is nothing short of masterful. The narrative threads that connect to his previous work, What We Leave Behind, are so elegantly woven in that longtime fans will get chills, while new readers will never feel lost. The idea of a world moving on after the fall of humanity is handled with nuance and philosophical weight. It’s not just about survival or adventure it’s about what fills the void after a dominant force disappears. Kayriss is a spiritual anchor in this chaos, and watching her battle inner turmoil and external forces was profoundly moving. This is top tier fantasy.
What can I say that will do this book justice. That matches the level emotions I am experiencing after reading The Darktouched.
This book is fast paced whilst drawing you in and exploring the characters that you meet and learn about. You get invested in the relationships that form with the characters. The world building is amazing, you can imagine the the world around you and the journey they took.
I went through so many emotions, I laughed, I smiled, I was shocked and then I cried 🙈
As someone who is an avid reader & does many book reviews every year, I have to say... this may just be my favorite read of 2024. This book has everything a reader could possibly ask for in a book. This story will take you on a roller-coaster of a ride and leave you wanting more. You will fall in love with so many of the characters and the world they live in. The author, Dave Haywood, has a brilliant way of allowing you to see directly into his imagination. I would give this book a 6 out of 5 stars, if I could. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND
I didn’t think a book about the fall of humanity could be so full of hope. But The Darktouched delivers exactly that hope laced with sorrow, wrapped in druidic magic and deep, ancient power. Kayriss is a character who quietly commands your attention. She’s not flashy or loud, but she burns with purpose. The tension between peace and war is something I think we all feel in today’s world, and seeing it mirrored in such an epic setting was both cathartic and chilling. If you want a fantasy that’s more than just swords and spells something with soul this is it.
