Thorns of deceit
The main plot revolves around Aiden seeking revenge for Raven and their reunion, that's pretty much the gist of it. Sure, there's some romance in there, but I didn't really care for it. 🤷♀️
Anyway, there were some pretty dark themes in this book, and the author actually gave a heads-up about it at the start. But I think it would've been really useful to include those TW/CW in the warnings or maybe even have a link for them, especially for readers who want to go in blindly.
So, Aiden (36, present) and Raven (24, present) crossed paths (h19/H31) when she saw something she shouldn't have. After doing a bit of digging into her background, they found she's connected to someone powerful, and that connection was used to push her into marrying Aiden. Well, she basically had two choices: either face death or get married. But since she's still young and had just started living her life, she went with the second option.
Both of them obviously didn't want this marriage, but both want to make something good out of it. It probably helped that they were mutually attracted to one another, that Aiden, despite his reputation, was actually kind when it came to her, and that Raven wasn't ungrateful or acting like a brat towards him. They were only married for two weeks when something happened that led to their separation.
That said, this is a safe second-chance romance. They were separated for five years and had both been celibate throughout that time. I think that's one of the good things you can expect from this author. There will always be celibacy and faithfulness in her second-chance stories.
I still couldn't be bothered by the romance, though, because this features one of my most hated tropes, which is the virgin x manwhore pairing.
Tbf, Aiden's history wasn't overly emphasized to the readers. There were brief mentions here and there of his sexual preferences and the fact that he has been with MANY women. Those reminders lived rent-free in my head and they totally ruined my mood while reading this.
It also didn't help that there's too much glorification of Raven's innocence and how Aiden gloats about getting to have her firsts, because ugh! 🤧
So as not to worsen my already pissed-off mood, I just skipped all the spicy scenes, because ick!
Moving past that, they met by accident after five years. And Aiden made sure Raven won't be able to run from him again. If readers are expecting a strong-headed FMC, they're not going to find it here. Sadly, she's a victim of BBS and always ends up becoming a puddle of goo around him. Disappointing but not really surprising.
As for the revenge, I wish the comeuppance of the bad guy was long and brutal; unfortunately, he had it far too easy.
Overall, it was okay, but I'm still not going to rate it. This might or might not work for some, but I do hope it finds its intended audience.
