Step into the world of the eighties with Martina, as she recounts her life story growing up in a dysfunctional family, marked by parental neglect and dangerous situations. Told in the narrator's point of view, this tale of self-discovery and resilience will resonate with many who lived through the same era. As Martina navigates her new life in Daytona Beach, Florida, she faces challenges that lead to one bad decision after another, threatening her future. Will she find her way back to the path she once envisioned for herself?
How many times did Claude use that shitty fake apology about doing all the work and being so stressed to excuse his repeated abuse of Martina?! Not even close to the end of Martina’s story and I couldn’t stand him. As the story went on I became more and more aware of Martina acknowledging how many adult choices she made as a child. She held on through so much BS in her neglectful and abusive childhood and teenage years but came out with an unshakeable optimism and bravery. She started to periodically recall the good memories she held onto with firm happiness in her present life which I loved to know, such as what her co-worker telling her how special Grant believed her to be. A little hard not reading with page numbers but I wonder if that was intentional. I often listened along to most of the songs presented at the start of each chapter and I loved that idea!
