Winter Getaway

Rate this book
It's three weeks until Christmas, but after losing both her job and her boyfriend in the same day, Rune Dubois feels less than celebratory.

Since she isn't one to let life take her down, Rune decides to embark on a getaway to small town Minnesota. But when a sudden snowstorm leaves her stranded on the side of the road—and at the mercy of an alarmingly handsome stranger—Rune realizes that this holiday season might be far more interesting than she'd anticipated.

Finn Sigurdson has already achieved a level of success that most authors only dream of. There's just one problem: his creative muse seems to have abandoned him completely. With looming deadlines and impatient fans, the very last thing he needs right now is a distraction…

But when Rune inadvertently breaks into Finn's home and intrudes on his solitary lifestyle, the two find themselves swept up in a whirlwind of heated attraction, snowy (mis)adventures, and a looming secret that could unite or shatter them.

* This is a cozy winter romance with explicit language, open-door intimacy, and an HEA.*

Winter Getaway was such a cute, fun, romance read for the winter season with the perfect amount of spice! This felt extra special to me seeing as your main characters love books. Rune, the reader, and Finn, the author. It helped me connect with the characters. It’s a cozy, small town romance with lovable side characters. Rune experiences a series of unfortunate events which eventually leads to her ending up at Finn’s house in a snowstorm. Finn has no idea she’s there until he walks into the living room in only a towel to her sitting on his couch and from there their whirlwind romance takes off.
This is book 1 of The Birch Lake Romance and I cannot wait for the next one! Thank you Rowan Eira for an ARC of this and I cannot see what comes next!

I only review historical romances, but decided to make an exception for this book. I randomly found it in my library's Hoopla subscription and it turned out to be the perfect read for what was otherwise a gloomy winter day.

This story was so cute! Low angst and with the sweetest hero! The heroine, Rune, finds herself at a crossroads in her life after some unfortunate events. She decides to head to northern Minnesota to visit her aunt and regroup. On the way, fate delivers her to Finn (our hero), a very successful writer who has been suffering from a bit of writer's block. The two hit it off with a fast friendship and palpable chemistry. There is no doubt they are meant to be! He is her aunt's neighbor and friend, so there are plenty of opportunities for them to interact during her trip. The story also has family time with the heroine's aunt and cousins, and lots of good banter. It does have some steamy scenes.

If you are looking for a delightful and lighthearted read, please give this book a try. It is the author's first published novel, and I selfishly want her to be a success so I can read more of her books!

The perfect winter read with excellent characters and spice, it’s a cozy small town romance with lovable side characters (which is something I love in books!). I loved Rune and Felix, she is a reader and such a relatable character and he is an author! That is always fun for me in books. After a series of unfortunate events leads Rune to Finn’s house, during a snowstorm, and this is where their “meet-cute” happens, because he doesn’t know she’s there until he walks into his living room in only a towel and she’s sitting on his couch!👀 and it only gets better from there!🤭 I also loved that Finn is a super sweet introvert. Most MMC’s are extroverts and I love the switch up from that.🥰

Thank you so much @rowaneira.author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Winter Getaway (Birch Lake Romance book 1) is available now so if anyone is still looking for a cozy winter read to squeeze into their 2024 goals or start off your 2025 with, this is the one!❄️

Another great read from another great indie author!

From the first chapter, I loved Rune’s POV. Her inner dialogue made me laugh and was just so relatable. She’s such a trooper when it feels like she’s got a little rain cloud following her around and you totally feel for her. 🙈

I liked the unexpected meet-cute between her and Finn, and having Finn’s POV really helped you understand him better. I didn’t realize that most of the MMCs I’ve read recently have all been major extroverts until this one. Finn is a super sweet introverted character. I kind of loved how nervous and real he gets with Rune. There was something special about the way he was with her vs. everyone else. There are also super fun dynamics between family and friends that bring the story together and give it that cozy feel.

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review! 🖤

I loved it! It was a cozy Christmas read for me, which was something I’d never read before. I’ve never really been drawn to holiday reads but this one was a ton of fun! I will admit that there were a few discrepancies here and there, but this is a debut novel & I didn’t expect it to be flawless by any means. My husband has written a book & his debut novel also was a bit wonky in places. I think this is totally normal.

I loved watching Rune & Finn’s whirlwind romance happen. It seemed pretty on par with my own marriage, and we’ve been married for nearly six years so it was kind of nice to see that depicted. Watching Rune struggle a bit with the trauma from her past relationship felt very real and honest, which I also really appreciated. It’s rare that we see a FMC who has precious relationship issues that come into play with the new love interest. I almost wish we had seen a bit more of the Sebastian turmoil, but all in all, I think it was written pretty well.

Finn is also quite the Minnesota gentleman! I don’t know if “Minnesota nice” can be depicted any better than it was in this book.

Overall, I think this was a fun, easy read for me going into the holiday season & I’m so honored that I got to be part of the ARC team for this one!

I loved Rune and Finn’s whirlwind romance! This book was the perfect palate cleanser to get into the holiday spirit with romance reads.

Finn was definitely an introverted, cinnamon roll mmc who captured my heart immediately. While Rune is funny and somewhat awkward in front of her crush- couldn’t relate more to her if I tried. The characters aren’t perfect, which makes them and their story even more relatable. Seeing as this is the first book in the Birch Lake Romance Series, the author did a great job of introducing friends and family that I can’t wait to see more of in the rest of the series!

Would I recommend this book? yes, absolutely! Would I reread its? 100% will be reading this again and looking forward to book two!

Thank you to Rowan Eira for sharing and advanced copy with me in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this book! It was wintery and cozy and comforting, all while being unlike others I’ve read. I loved the meet-cute between the Rune and Finn, and the first half of the book was perfect! I do feel like I expected the tension between them to be a bit stronger when they had their misunderstanding, so that section was a little flat to me. But, I also never felt any anxiety while reading it, which always happens to me with third act breakup scenes, so that was kind of a blessing in disguise!

Overall, this book is a wonderful wintery read. Thank you for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!

“I’m on this trip to ground myself in reality, to discover what’s next in life. I can’t allow myself to be swept up into a distracting crush with a stranger.”

I really enjoyed this one! It had conflict, comfort, and comedic relief! I would not have been able to function the way Rune does after losing her job and then finding out her long time boyfriend has been cheating on her! She had a long string of BAD luck, but it turned into something wonderful!

“‘Because I’m a stranger. And I monopolized your company for far too long.’ ‘Pretty sure you stopped being a stranger the moment you walked in on me in a towel,’ he teases.”

I think my favorite part was when he started talking about being an author and I immediately thought “no way! He’s not going to be her favorite author!” And then second guessed myself a bunch of times between that moment and when it is revealed that he is in fact the same author! And that he owns the house she has been dreaming of owning and used as a comfort! It was such a fun spin of events.

I found myself wanting a bit more spice/seeing their relationship go a bit deeper than what was given. But that doesn’t hold too much weight on what makes a good book!

“‘You can’t keep running from your own life. At some point, you’ll have to actually live it.’ … ‘Things weigh you down. It's time to start a new life.’”

Rowan Eira knocked it out of the park with this one for me. I will definitely be picking up some more books by her!

Rune gets stuck in a ditch, both physically and metaphorically. With no job, no boyfriend and no real reason to get into the Christmas celebration mood, she ventures to a small town to visit her Aunt and realizes maybe driving in the snow storm wasn’t the best idea. She gets rescued by Bob only to be dropped off at Finn’s house (unknowingly) and has her meet cute (also unknowingly 💕).

I absolutely adored both Rune and Finn. The small town romance with spice, cozy vibes, and lovable relatable characters are *chef’s kiss* I totally related to Rune and laughed at her inner dialogue because girl same, I felt as though it were my own. Finn is charming and one of the few introverted MMC I’ve read/encountered so far. And I enjoyed the interactions and banter between him and Rune. The way he would get nervous around her was endearing and sweet.

Highly recommend this book if you are looking for something cozy and winter-y with some spice ❄️✨💕

I had the absolute pleasure of reading Winter Getaway as an ARC, and from the very first page, I was hooked! This book is the perfect blend of a cozy winter romance and just the right amount of tension to keep you flipping pages late into the night… or in my case, finishing it in a single day.
The setting was everything I wanted in a winter romcom: snowy landscapes, warm fires, and the kind of holiday charm that makes you wish you could jump right into the story. The main characters were easy to root for, pulling you into every heartfelt moment and playful exchange.
One of my fav aspects of the book was the side characters. They added so much to the story, making the world even richer. And can we talk about the cover art? Absolutely adorable, it perfectly captures the vibe of the book.
On top of all that, the author was incredibly kind and helpful when I had an issue with my file, which made the experience even more special. Honestly, I love that this is a series because I’m not ready to leave this world behind! So if you’re looking for a fun, feel good winter romcom, Winter Getaway is a must read!

Rowan does it again (or for the first time for those of you reading in order)! After reading Maple Leaves & Lattes I couldn’t wait for cozy season to dive into Winter Getaway and I’m so glad I did. Rune and Finn’s story is maddeningly relatable (as a fantasy reader myself, once you read this- you’ll know). The whole world is comfortable, relatable, spicy (🌶️🌶️🌶️/5), and sweet.

Rune- down on ALL of her luck, is faced with a bleak outlook to her future when her drive to her aunts house (post firing AND breakup) takes a turn… right into a ditch. But a “ditch of opportunity” it is as she’s deposited at the house of an unsuspecting, hot, intelligent, and kind local gentleman who isn’t necessarily used to people barging in.

A bit of found family, some misunderstandings, and miscommunications later- tied with a wee bow of ever-present anxiety, secrets, and love… and you’ve got me teary-eyed and blissfully happy with this story!

Bonus points if you read this while it’s snowing- I did, highly recommend.

this book was everything I was hoping for - a cute and cozy holiday romance with a lil spice + it felt extra special to me that it’s set in small town, up-north minnesota which happens to be my home state

the main characters, rune and finn, have a significant common interest that make this story so, so good, the banter and spice was well done and finny… I’m categorizing him as a cinnamon roll mmc, he’s so sweet and thoughtful. I loved the sisterly relationship rune has with her cousin, ella. but what really makes this romance so amazing in my opinion is the revealed truth of a character’s identity. I want more of rune + finn.

would I recommend? yes, if you like cozy, small town romances! would I reread? yessss

“Winter Getaway” by Rowan Eira presents a thoughtful narrative in which the female main character confronts significant challenges while working to rebuild her life. The story effectively conveys the message that "when one door closes, another one opens." The entrance of the male main character introduces hope and support at a pivotal moment for both characters, enhancing the overall emotional depth of the story. Their charming and affectionate dynamic enriches the reading experience, making the book an enjoyable choice. Overall, this well-crafted novel is an excellent pick for the holiday season. It invites readers to cozy up with a warm drink, like hot cocoa, for a snug reading session. With its sweet and heartwarming themes, the book is perfect for those looking for a delightful escape during the holidays. This is a holiday book he falls first, a closed-door spice book, with a heartwarming story.

This cozy, small town romance is such an ideal read for a cold, chilly winter day! After a few unfortunate events, Rune travels to her aunt’s in northern Minnesota where the bad luck seems to follow her on the road. There she meets Finn-who turns into her “hero” of sorts. The character arcs of both these main characters were relatable and funny, especially with their inner dialogue. Their meet-cute one of the cutest ever (it involves a towel and not much else!). I absolutely loved the northern winter references, activities, slang and (ahem) large animals. I adored the bookish vibes throughout the plot and appreciated the first person, dual PoV. The side characters added another exceptional and humorous dimension to the overall story too. Such a cute and cozy love story, and I’m looking forward to the other books in the series! I appreciate the advanced copy from the author. 4.5 stars

This book evokes a warm winter atmosphere. I enjoy this small-town romance novel with a touch of excitement. Rune has faced numerous challenges, and it appears that misfortune consistently trails her. She has experienced unfortunate events. Finn arrives and becomes the "hero" she has needed all along. I found the characters, including the supporting ones, to be highly entertaining. Finn was highly beneficial for Rune, and I appreciate how he treated Rune distinctively compared to others. I greatly appreciated the perspectives of Rune and Finn, as they provide deeper insights into their characters. Ella was like a sisterly cousin to Rune, and I truly enjoyed reading about their relationship. If you are looking for a cozy holiday romance set in a small town, this is the book for you. I found this read to be quite enjoyable and I look forward to exploring what comes next.

Rune Dubois is heading to a small town in Minnesota for her the week, needing to escape her new status as both unemployed and single.

Finn Sigurdson is an introverted, cinnamon roll MMC who is looking for the right way to end his novel, and is inspired by the unexpected Rune.

The dual POV really serves this book well as both characters are interesting to follow and their deeper perspectives added a richness to the story that may have been missing without it.

Rune and Finn’s whirlwind romance was fantastic and this was a wonderful, cozy read for this time of the year or any where you’re looking for a little Happily Ever After. Thank you to the author for the ARC.

A super sweet winter romance.

Rune and Finn’s story is low angst, high sweet levels.

After a whirlwind of a Monday, out her job and boyfriend Rune is looking for an escape. Disregarding the weather reports she heads for her aunt's cabin.

Finn’s meddlesome uncle decides to play match maker and throw these two messes together.

Even though he was discombobulated in the beginning, the more he gets to know Rune the more he wants to keep her around.

Neither of them wants things to end between them and they don’t know how to tell each other that.

I absolutely adored their love story and can’t wait for the next one!

I adored this romance! Rune has lost her job and her boyfriend in one very unfortunate day, and travels to northern Minnesota to visit her aunt and escape her troubles. She immediately runs into Finn (well, accidentally breaks into his house) and sparks fly.

These two book-loving protagonists are relatable, funny, and kind. It was so fun to get to know them and see their romance blossom (through both their eyes!). Also, I very much enjoyed the setting, as a lifelong Minnesotan and winter lover myself. I had a hard time putting the book down. The side characters are also well-developed, and I can't wait to see more of them as the series continues.

Such a cute, funny, cozy winter read! I really enjoyed it!

The banter between the mc’s, family and friends is spot on. They were cracking me up.

Spice level is like 2 outta 5.

If you like a certain colorful romantasy series, there are a few funny tidbits in here you’ll get also.

If you are needing a pallet cleanser book between heavy reads, this is a good one. Nice little happy ending with some cute funny humor.

Between 2.5 and 3 stars. I desperately wanted to like this more based on the ties to Minnesota and the sheer potential it had to be the cozy winter romance I was looking for. Unfortunately, the writing fell flat for me and many of the characters just felt shallow and cringey and blah. The ratings I've seen have been pretty positive so maybe it was just me?
