Book of the Dead 3: Masquerade: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Magnin and Beory are dead, but Tyron is still alive.

He has hidden himself, adopted a false name, taken up an apprenticeship, living a quiet but prosperous life in the provincial capital of Kenmor.

However, the flame of vengeance burns in his chest, and only one thing can quench it.

Join Tyron as he weaves his plot of revenge right under the noses of those responsible for his pain, mastering the Necromantic arts and growing his undead horde, one body at a time.

Book3 of the next hit LitRPG series from RinoZ, the author of Chrysalis. Book of the Dead takes on all aspects of Necromancy headfirst, from the tactical manuevering of skeletons, to what it's like spending so much time amongst the undead.

Book three

I have been reading this story over on Royalroad. It's one that I read when I have run out of other things to read. It's not boring and does hold my interest when I read it, but it is also one that I can put down for other stories.

The series is still going strong and Tyron is close to resembling a real Necromancer by the end of this volume.

This book went pretty deep on the crafting side of things, or at least it felt like it did. Tyron was on the run in the first couple of volumes, so while he would go through periods of frantic study and experimentation, he was repeatedly interrupted and forced to flee.

After the climactic events of Volume 2, Tyron has assumed a false identity as an enchanter, which he has taken as a subclass. This has allowed him to establish a base and accumulate enough wealth to continue his necromantic studies under the very noses of the Magisters in the capital.

While there might be more of an emphasis on the crafting this book, we still got multiple payoffs and I think it's something the author deserves credit for. This story is lacking some of the leveling and OP character putting people in their place fun scenes commonly found in Gamelit. But the author knows we didn't sign up to wallow in misery and scurry around the sewers like a rat the entire time, so we are treated to a bit of a slow burn, but with some payoff scenes that allow Tyron to put his new skills and creations on full display.

It's a great pattern since every time Tyron locks himself away for a while experimenting, as the reader I know I'll be rewarded later by seeing things in action. I'm not sure how many books will be in this series, but things begin to escalate here and I believe we cross an invisible line where things will get much more serious in the next and following volume.

A little better

I started this series on Royal Road could not finish the series there either. The main character continues to be unlikeable one he is whining then he is swearing vengeance!! Then there is the pages and pages of stats, I know it's filler but at least just show where he actually increased his stats not all the stats that has not change for 20 chapters!!

Dead

Really like the overall story, I personally think a bit of the “crafting” aspect of the book was a bit heavy. Not talking about all and it’s typical for these types of stories to pad word count . I’m happy the stat sheet wasn’t used every other chapter, or the system isn’t overly responsive. The story is very well done more on the grim dark side. Would have liked more cat and mouse between the MC and the magister’s . Feels like the last three books he’s been reactive Internalize, brooding bad attitude edge lord . Might be good to give him more personally than anger vengeance and angst .

different

While the first two books is about a boy with a class that’s illegal wanting to prove that he can use his class to help people and be good this book is about a boy that only cares about vengeance regardless of if people get hurt and while at first I was iffy on if I like the path this series was taking the more I read the more I came to love the continuation of this story and I will be waiting to read the next book just as impatiently

Ahhhhhh that was great. This was one of those books that I thought to be a slow starter, and I set the book down to read later. Once I picked the book up again I easily slipped right into it. Ideally I should've re-read the second book before starting this, now that would've been the perfect segue into bk3: Masquerade. Tyrone's only purpose now is to seek revenge on the Magisters, and Priests, as they're the ones that destroyed his family. But he's being smart! Methodical and deliberately taking his time, hiding his true strength under his second class Arcanists as Master Almsfield masquerading, even changinghis face. All the while gaining even more power as a Necromancer. And. Wow. Dove! You remember Dove, Tyrone's best friend, smart mouth and current resident skull, well Dove has some surprises in store for you!
You're definitely gonna read the books to strengthen up your own class or if you're lucky classes.

Here's a couple of quotes for ya:

"He’d been burning the candle at both ends lately, then inserted an extra wick somewhere in the middle."

"I never understood people who preferred to go nude before, but now I’m starting to get it. Clothes are a prison."

Couldn't put this book down it was so good. The first two in the series were surprisingly really good for the genre, some of the best in litrpg I'd argue.

One of the better traits of these books has been the main character's fear of his own power, and resisting the insurmountable odds while grappling the horrors he's faced just to eke out a meagre existence. Unfortunately, that's not him this time and I honestly kind of miss it, he's a lot more edgy and driven solely by vengeance which is understandable but I wish there was more than just vengeance in him right now.

In a series, one of the books usually serves as the big set up for another, and that's what this felt like although it was still entertaining. Seeing the world shift and change around the small actions of a tiny necromancer is crazy to see, and despite getting better at the craft I still love how this book makes necromancy an extremely hard thing to do that takes so much time, magic, willpower, wits, and especially constitution as Tyron has demonstrated.

Super excited to see what happens next and I hope the character at the end is alright

I enjoy this series on the whole, but it suffers from an incredible lack of pacing that is starting to make this hard to read. The story shuffles forward instead of steps. If a story's progression were measured on a ruler, we're moving in millimetres rather than centimetres. There's so much redundant writing as characters must interact multiple times in similar scenarios because the forward progression that should have happened in the first instance instead occurs many instances later.

I'll admit to starting to skim large sections of this book where I felt like I had seen it before, and I didn't have any problem following the story in later chapters. It made this book a chore to finish, which is a shame because I like this series, I like where the story is headed, and I think it has the potential to be much better.

I doubt I'll be sticking with it, though. I like to re-read long-running series like this to remind myself of what happened occasionally, usually around the release of new books, but I can't see myself sitting through this series again with the pacing so slow.

Absolutely loving this series. Love the skill tree progression and the use of Tyrion's powers. This one had less action but excellent progression. And always great having Dove return.

This book is a welcome change of pace, in that it's slower than the feverish first 2. But in a good way. It serves as a kind of interlude. Lots of world-building and investment in broader tensions.

Tyron is in hiding, with a false identity and a mask on, marshalling his time, research, and growing power, investing in revenge.

I enjoyed it immensely.

3.75 stars I guess. Starts rough. The main character is a not so likeable. There are some very nice bits of writing in there and the ending is better than the beginning. The transition from being chased to chasing is a bit rough. Maybe the next book will be better. Still love the author but this book wasn't rocking.

better and better

I’m one of those readers who grows bored with a series if it continues for too long. Not so with this series. Each page and paragraph gets better and better. The next book cannot come soon enough

Best I've read in a long time

I live this series, and this book. The character development is sooooo good. From young and optimistic to the dark necromancer...I can feel the hate and anger while I'm sitting here.

Sigh

Can't wait for the next book.

Picking up.

Thinkings are picking up, and im here for all of it.
I like the unique system and how the mc has tk literally work and figureout his class. This series is such a stark difference from his other more lighthearted series.

Never fails

RinoZ Truly cannot miss. Everything I read books from this author I find myself greedily devouring everything they write. From ants to undead, Man knows how to set up a good story.

A long awaited journey

Easily one of the best written books in the market, an incredibly interesting and compelling power system with very very well written characters

Good read

The 3rd book in the series turned out really good, and it's quite long, which is even better. I look forward to the next.

I sure hope you were not expecting to read a book about a necromancer, because this book is about some shopkeeper that does anything but.

This is better than #2. I think it would be improved by developing the side characters.
