on the one hand there's a lot of information here and the contested nature of political life in the free state in the thirties comes through very strongly. on the other the author makes the weird decision to weigh in with his own judgements, jokes about the Judean People's Front, most often at the expense of Frank Ryan. there's also a lot of misreadings of republican and Marxist ideology, whether wilful or not
