Manhattan Bossholes #3

Designed for Disaster

Rate this book
First, Coffeezilla torpedoes my career as a barista.
Then he dangles my dream job like a carrot on a stick.
So what do I do? Make a deal with the devil.

I learned the hard way: trust no one.
That’s why I’m stuck serving lattes in the first place.
Then Trent Saunders, aka Satan, waltzes in.

Mr Hot Shot is too busy barking into his phone to stop and read.
Is it my fault he missed the big DO NOT USE sign on the table?
Ok, maybe I shouldn’t have laughed when he spilled coffee all over himself.
But he deserved it.

And for that the Table Tyrant got me fired!
At least I got the last word. Or so I thought…

Because it turns out, this gorgeous grump is the answer to my professional prayers.
He wants me to design high-end furniture for his grandmother.
A sweet old woman who mistakes me for his girlfriend.

And does this genius bosshole correct her?
No! He asks me to play along!
Which means I’m stuck fake dating a man I loathe.

What’s even more annoying? He might not be a total villain.
He’s actually kind of sweet. Sometimes.
But I’m not about to fall for his whole “nice guy’ routine.

I mean, what kind of a woman would I be if I fell for a jerk?

Calling your book Designed for Disaster might be setting yourself up for disaster... AND WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT...

Yeah, this one was not for me! And coming off of really enjoying Aidan’s story, this just lacked everything I was hoping for.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This follows Trent and Natalie. Natalie works several odd jobs to fund her furniture-making business and one day has a bad run-in with "Coffeezilla" AKA Trent at the coffee shop where she’s employed. Their encounter gets her fired, but by some twisted fate, Trent unknowingly hires her to design furniture for his grandmother (OUR NANA DEE). When Natalie, the “hellcat” from the coffee shop, shows up at Dee’s house, Trent realizes it’s her. Seeing how happy Dee seems at the sight of his supposed “girlfriend,” he persuades Natalie to keep up the act. In exchange, she gets a job at his prestigious furniture company and the chance to design a sustainable furniture line. The two must navigate their differences, explosive banter, and mutual stubbornness to figure out if there’s something more between them than just a fake arrangement.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
I really liked Natalie. She’s self-sufficient, determined, and doesn’t let anyone push her around. Right from the start, you can tell she’s guarded, careful with her heart, and burned from a bad past relationship. She’s clear about her goals and doesn’t waver in what she wants, which makes her a compelling and grounded character.

Trent, on the other hand, was the main reason this book fell flat for me. I wanted to like him, I really did! I might have developed high expectations based on the build-up of who he was based on his glimpses in the previous books... But I struggled to get past his personality. Yes, he’s the typical brooding businessman with bottled-up emotions, but his protective nature over his family and company came off more as arrogance than charm. His strained relationship with his parents (who sound like they came straight from a soap opera) creates tension in his relationship with Natalie. And while I can understand that trauma shapes people, it didn’t make me empathize with him in the way I wanted to.

The biggest problem was the lack of chemistry between Natalie and Trent. They were always at odds, they have different ideals, different outlooks on life, and different perspectives on relationships. Even in opposites-attract romances, there’s usually some aspect where the couple clicks or at least connects through their banter. With these two, it felt like they were constantly clashing, misunderstanding each other, and talking past each other. There was no sense of connection, just a series of miscommunications and unresolved tension.

Now both characters are guarded due to being hurt in the past, but instead of creating depth, it only adds to the miscommunication that drives the story. The third-act breakup felt forced, hinging on yet another misunderstanding and unfounded assumptions. While there was grovelling and begging for forgiveness after the fallout from Trent (because obviously he is the one that messes up), it didn’t feel genuine. Their relationship lacked the foundation to make me believe they could stand the test of time.

Leslie North often relies on the idea that just because two characters spend time together, the romance will naturally fall into place. And while that can work in fluffy, lighthearted romances, it just didn’t land here. I wanted to see actual development in their relationship, not just time spent together implying love.

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Workplace Romance (Boss X Employee)
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ Forced Proximity
▶ Fake Dating
▶ Poor Girl X Rich Boy
▶ Band of Brothers

and 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▷ Grovelling
▷ "Good Girl"
▷ Suit Daddy
▷ Rolled Sleeves/Forearms
▷ Nicknames
▷ Don't Stop
▷ Banter

In the end...it had some cute moments (I mean he bought her a CHURCH) and I got to see more of Nana Dee. But that doesn't fully counterbalance that for me it lacked depth and emotional resonance. So as a result, the romance didn’t feel profound or satisfying.

Thank you to Netgalley, Relay Publishing and Leslie North for the gifted copy.

This book is third in Manhattan Bossholes series, which follows our third Lost Boy, Trent Saunders and Natasha Dryer. Leslie north has always the hilarious first interaction which end up making me crack every time. Same happened in this book too, their first "meet-cute?" of spilled coffee with a mix of "Why were the hot ones always mega assholes?" and "The gorgeous ones are always complete hellcats" first impression, resulting in her losing her job at coffee shop. Stuffs happens and they were forced to fake a relationship to make Trent's grandmother Nana Dee happy due her poor health, even they can't stand each other and eventually she got hired for their furniture company.

I loved their banters and back-forth. The key highlight of this book was other couples cameo, i adored Vincent-Piper, Aiden-Cora, Paul-Chloe moments. Their appearances brought a different connection to the story which i couldn't help but enjoy every single second of it.

It pains me to say i didn't vibe with this book as much as i expected, Trent and Natasha physical attraction was hot but i couldn't connect with them on personal level, blame it on with how rushed things were with their relationship. Their chemistry lacked depth and add miscommunication into the mix? It is a recipe for disaster, but not in a good way.

Wish i could get Dominic book, cuz single dad romance never disappoints.

Overall a cute, fun time read.

Tropes:
☞ Enemies to Lovers
☞ He’s a Billionaire
☞ Found Family
☞ Coffeezilla x Hellcat
☞ Chronic illness rep(family member)
☞ Fake Dating
☞ Insta Lust

Thank you NetGalley and Relay Publishing for this advanced readers copy of Designed for Disaster by Leslie North! Here's to my love for Hallmark-esque romances, and enemies to lovers
3 ★★★'s
Designed for Disaster by Leslie North is a fast-paced, steamy romance that hits many of the familiar beats you might expect from a contemporary romance. The story follows a strong-willed woman, a brooding, misunderstood hero, and a passionate love story that unfolds with a bit of tension and a lot of chemistry. While this book delivers on the typical romance tropes-opposites attract, a sizzling attraction that can't be denied, and a big of emotion turmoil along the way- it does bring a few refreshing twists to the table that set it apart from others in the genre.

One of the key features of this book is its central conflict. While many romance novels rely on the classic "miscommunication leads to drama" trope, Designed for Disaster leans more into the characters; personal growth and their efforts to overcome their own flaws, rather than relying solely on external obstacles. I appreciated that the characters were given the opportunity to work through their issues in a more grounded and realistic way, adding an element of maturity to the story.

However, as much as I enjoyed the premise and the chemistry between the leads, there were a few things that held the book back for me. the writing style was, unfortunately, a bit of a distraction at times. The verbiage felt overly simplistic and at times awkward. While the story was engaging overall, the occasional stilted sentence or clunky phrasing made it difficult to stay fully immersed in the narrative. That being said, I don't want to dwell too much on the negatives. This book still has its strengths, and fans of romance will likely appreciate the familiar tropes mixed with a bit of fresh character development. It's definitely a fun read if you're looking for a light, predictable romance with a few emotional layers and some steamy moments. However, if you're particularly sensitive to writing style and prefer a more polished narrative, it might feel a bit rough around the edges for you.

I liked a lot of this book. The writing was good and it was very engaging, and the main couple, Trent and Natasha, had good chemistry. I particularly enjoyed the early parts of the book when they were at loggerheads – I think this author writes that sort of dynamic very well and that was quite entertaining. The pacing of the romance was a little off for me – it switched a bit too quickly from antagonism to romance.

However, I felt like the final conflict between them was very forced, and to be honest, both of the characters acted badly. He completely overreacted, but I also didn’t get why her character made the decisions she did. It felt like she was being very obtuse over it and it didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

But the book as a whole was quite a fun, easy read nonetheless, and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a hate-to-love, boss/employee romance. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book.

Content Notes: Hate-to-love, boss/employee, workplace, millionaire/billionaire MMC, fake relationship, bargains/deals/wagers, forced proximity.

3 ⭐

Designed for disaster was my first approach to Leslie North, this is the third book in the Manhattan Bossholes series but since it’s interconnected standalones they can be read in any order. I really liked the premise of this book, and when I started reading I really enjoyed the meet cute and the banter that came from it. But as I kept going, I realized I didn’t really care for the characters. The story was fine, and that was it. There wasn’t anything that was keeping me focused on the book and away from distractions.

It was an enjoyable read but nothing more. It was funny and cute, but as I already said I personally felt no connection to the characters.

This was a cute and cozy romance! The main reason that I rated it 3 stars is that everything happened awfully fast between the characters, and I felt like the chemistry was lacking. And the proposal after the 3rd act breakup, as adorable as the moment was, just didn't feel right.

I did, however, enjoy the banter, I liked all of the side characters, and I appreciated that the FMC was a very independent person and didn't hesitate to stand up for herself. Overall, it was an enjoyable read!

Thank you to NetGalley for the box set that included this ARC.

Natasha is working really hard to keep herself afloat. Bustling with multiple part-time jobs and her side hustle of designing custom furniture, she definitely doesn't have time to squabble with some douche having a yelling match on his phone. But when Coffeezilla turns the table on himself and her, she finds herself with one less paycheck and an arch-nemesis. Trent just wants his parents to leave him alone. After all, they've been so good at that his whole life. He's got stuff to do and now some barista is giving him a hard time. Serves her right to get fired after treating him so badly. He just can't help but notice her though.

I thought this was cute. I definitely liked the first two books better. Trent was so unlikable for so much of the book. Even though he does have a sweet side and shows it often, he just wasn't my fave of the MMCs in this series. Natasha is okay. Again, she's not my favorite. She's spicy, but not as interesting a character as Piper and Cora. I love that Dom comes out of left field in this one and snags him a babe too. Good for him after what happened in Book 2.

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

🎧🎧I took full advantage of having all 3 of the Manhattan Bosshole ALCs in my library and binge listened to their stories in about 4 days or so and I really enjoyed the binge. I loved the Nana Dee story arc and also the connection or MMCs had to each other and Nana Dee. (read/listen to these stories and find out why LOL) 🎤Chloe Ryan & Sebastian Grove🎤 were both new-to-me narrators and I really enjoyed them both! I couldn’t listen to them at the same speed so that was a little twitchy for me, but that’s not something that they can do anything about since it’s a listener preference. As a first time listener to them both, they impressed me. I tend to te “like what I like” so new narrators sometimes have a hard time about it with me, but I enjoyed these two and they made this story that much better for me!

📚📚This story turned out to be a lot more “heartwarming” than I expected, especially after the beginning set-up! Their first encounter is anything but friendly or romantic LOL! I don’t know if I’d refer to their first encounter as a meet-cute because it was anything but “cute” but it did have me thinking, “well done Leslie North. Nice imagination!” It set me up to know that I was in for a highly entertaining story, with substance of course. I had learned already learned from the previous 2 books how much impact Leslie wrote into her stories, so I didn’t expect it to just be a “comedy”, but I was taken by surprise at the level of depth and emotion I felt throughout the story. I can’t really tell you why or pin-point the plot-points that caused this because, spoilers, but also because it was an overall feeling. Like the story was wrapped in a huge hug full of heart and hope. *shakes head* This is one you’ll have to read to get all the nuances I’m referring to, and it will be worth it!

😞😔NOTE: I am never going to be a “fan” of the usage of miscommunication as a plot device for conflict between adults. Yes, miscommunications happen all the time between adults, but when your characters have too many of those miscommunications in the short amount of time the story usually takes place and you want me, the reader, to believe the MCs will be riding off into the sunset despite all that “badly behaving adult shenanigans”, we have ourselves a situation. Feel me? This story walked a fine line with this and I can’t say I liked it too much. *shrug*

Trent and Natasha blew my heart and put it together.
I know it was the book #3 and even if it's the only book i read, it was totally worth it to try as a standalone even with spoilers from the other two. i wanna read.
For starters, the found family moments were so cute.
This book was almost perfect. The dislike to love, the miscommunication, and the try to fix it was done PERFECTLY. The couple was honestly a vibe altogether
Plus the end was magical also given the impact of the last two books.

The only thing i kinda didn't put up too much was the spice (not the spice per se cause it was swoony and very good but at what point was put in) that ruined some cute moments into lust for me but i get it and so it didn't impact much.

I definitely wanna read the two previews book now :)

Thanks for the Arc from #netgalley given in exchange for a honest review (thoughts totally mine)

This was a light and easy read! The writing was clear, fluid, and straightforward.

I love that Natasha is a strong and independent woman whose passion is woodworking and design! My favorite character was Dee though, she is the loving, all knowing, and strong grandmother everyone deserves.

Overall, I liked the book, however, the miscommunication trope is STRONG in this book, and unfortunately it is one of my least favorite tropes.

❤️Stand-alone novel in a series
🪑Found family
❤️Billionaire boss
🪑Furniture design
❤️Family member with chronic illness
🪑Fake dating
❤️Miscommunication
🪑Open door
❤️Dual POV

Natasha and Trent are both passionate and hard working individuals, with such soft hearts too. They're so perfect for each other, and their relationship felt very natural and not forced. They had such fantastic, simmering chemistry, and the author captured the classic grumpy and sunshine trope very well.

This book handled the difficult topics the characters had experienced, like parent loss, really well. Although Trent had come across in the beginning as cold, he was very kind and emotionally intelligent towards Natalia's pain, and vice versa. I loved the way they opened up to each other and how understanding they were. It was refreshing and comforting to read.

I will say the 'conflict' of the book and the resolution wasn't my favourite. It would have worked better if Trent hadn't seemed so emotionally intelligent and present throughout the book, but the way he reacted felt very blown out of proportion. At least there was an explanation as to why he reacted the way he did, so I can forgive it a little.

The book was also just super fun. There was lots of banter and a natural (and every hot) sort of flirting between the characters. The dialogue was really well written, and I sunk into the scenes like they were playing before me. I breezed through this book and had a great time. I often find romances to feel a little unrealistic to keep things comedic and fun, but I loved how realistic and possible this romance read as.

All the friendships were so good in this, it was just so heartwarming to read. Everything felt well balanced, and the pacing was spot on. I had a much better time than I expected, and ended up really loving this novel.

Thank you NetGalley for giving me the chance to review this!

Designed for Disaster is the final book of a trilogy, but I went into this blind as a standalone. It features a ton of tropes, including enemies to lovers, workplace romance, and fake dating. Quite fun, and usually right up my alley after consuming novels like The Hating Game and The Love Hypothesis.

I feel like this book started off strong with tons of fun banter, but by the end I’d turned my brain off from some predictable scenes and the headaches I got from Trent’s dialogue. I really wanted to like this, but the resolution’s execution fell flat for me. Certainly one of the spicier novels I’ve touched, but the lack of chemistry between the main leads plus a strange imbalance between the pacing and the content felt frustrating–the romance skewed way more towards instalust and lacked the push/pull I always crave in a romcom. Even so, I appreciated the lighthearted humor and entertaining moments.

Thank you NetGalley and Relay for the ARC!

Hmmm.

I thought I was going to like this book - I did not.

In the start this book seemed promising. We had banter and witty remarks already from the very first chapter.

But, this book fell really flat from me.

I had to DNF this book 60% in because I just couldn't get into the story - Continuing this book would have been a waste of my time.

It was boring. Really freaking boring.

The main characters, Natasha and Trent, had absolutely zero connection. I felt not a single spark between them - The physical attraction was there, but the personal connection wasn't, and that's a big no no for me.

Writing style was good, but my biggest issue was that I couldn't get into the book. It was just too boring.

This book wasn't for me at all, but I'm pretty sure someone else will like it.

I picked this up because I needed a pallet cleanser from my dark romance stint and glad I did. This was such a cute book!

Trent and Natasha’s first encounter was hilarious and boy Natasha is a feisty thing and Trent didn’t know what hit him. Trent is such a hot head and boy did it keep getting him in trouble 🫣and I do mean big trouble. He’s lucky Natasha is amazing.

I listened to this as an audio and omg 🫠 I’m so obsessed with Chloe Ryan, like borderline creepy 😅but I can’t help it, I jump on her audios every time I see her on it. Her male voice …😮‍💨hot. The MMC narrator Sebastian Grove was a first for me and he too didn’t disappoint. Though his voice for grandma D had me cracking up; but we all know grandma D was the main character and she is a spit fire. Thoroughly enjoyed the audio.

I loved this book! I was in need for a grumpy sunshine angsty book and boy did this deliver! The angst between Trent and Natasha was great it didn’t feel like it was over done. The banter and the push back Natasha gave Trent through the book put him in his place was great. The slow burn was just enough to not make it feel like it was a will they or won’t they but when will they.

Arrogant and obnoxious is Natasha’s impression of Trent when they first meet. They hate each other on sight, but Trent discovers Natasha is the up and coming furniture designer he’s been looking for. He offers her a job that’s too good to refuse.

The story moves quickly with a fake relationship and emotional family drama mixed with business. The characters from the previous two books also appear in this, and it enables Trent to show a whole other caring side of himself which Natasha likes.

It’s a good read as we see Trent face his demons, make big decisions and put the past behind him to find true love.

This book is a fun, slow-burn rom-com that starts with spilled coffee and turns into a fake dating mess. The banter between the fiery FMC and grumpy MMC is sharp and addictive. It’s a light, charming read with just enough heart to make you root for the “villain.”

I liked this, I love a good haters to lovers/ forced proximity/ fake dating read. Natasha is fierce & kinda bratty I loved it. Trent is jaded but you can tell he cares so much for his people. An easy, quick read! I’m looking forward to reading others in the series.

I really enjoyed this book! The FMC sticks to her guns and proves she has support herself without replying on the rich boyfriend and they work out a great relationship in the end. Hated that the MMC said those things but all good books have the typical 3rd act break up. I liked how it was resolved in the end. Good spice throughout as well. Only wish would be more drawn out tension between them.

Disappointing

I liked the first two in this series, but as good as this book started, it was ruined in the second half. The female lead did something she knew the male lead wouldn't like, and when he found out in a way that just screamed Betrayal, she and his friends acted as if he was the one at fault. She never apologized for her actions or even really reflected on what she did that was wrong.

We have enough gaslighted going on in this world...I don't need it in my books as well.

This is book three of the Manhattan Bossholes and the main characters are Trent Saunders, CEO of Saunders Furniture and Natasha Dryer, who works in a coffee shop and other places to make ends meet as she tries to get her bespoke furniture business going. A former relationship ended with her losing her job and her designs to the man she thought she trusted with her heart, when she accused him of stealing her work, so she has no time for relationships now. Whilst bussing tables at the coffee shop, she sees a strikingly handsome and clearly well-off man heading for a broken table, speaking loudly and rudely to his own father on his phone, and ignoring her attempts to warn him about the table. Nicknames of Coffeezilla and Hellcat are formed. When her boss overhears the way she is speaking to this customer, he fires her on the spot! Now she needs to ensure her commission piece gets finished in time to help pay her rent. When she next meets him, it is at a meeting to design some pieces for his Nana Dee, in an effort to get her interested in living and have a surgery that might prolong her life! She initially wants nothing to do with Trent until she looks around Dee’s house and recognises her as a person she admires greatly in the furniture business. She would love to make some matching pieces to the desk she had already made for Dee, without knowing who she was.

When Nana Dee sees how the two of them interact and also sees the designs Natasha has made for her, she lights up and persuades Trent that he should hire her for their company, a company Dee and her husband Jack started. Trent never wanted to work there, but was asked to after his parents almost ran it into bankruptcy during their bitter divorce! He has never been able to rely on either of them, instead relying on his friends from his college days, Aiden, Vincent, Paul and Dominic, who Nana Dee called her Lost Boys. When Trent sees how his Nana Dee perks up with Natasha’s presence, he asks her to pretend to be his girlfriend and offers her a job at his company, in charge of a new and environmental line of furniture. She gets him to up his offer and loves every minute of her new job, once she gets past her initial nerves and a coupe of jealous types in the team. Her fake relationship doesn’t last in that category for long, as neither can really ignore the pull of the other. But Natasha’s simple wish to reunite him with his parent’s, since she knows just how much she would give to have any time back with hers, soon turns a sexy interlude into a raging fight after a challenge is made against his leadership of the company, with the very facts she shared with his mother!

He doesn’t allow her to tell her side of the story and since he didn’t really explain just how much he hated his parents and never wanted to see them again, it is only his anger making the decisions! Natasha can’t believe she has made almost the same mistake again, falling for her boss and believing he would treat her right instead of being a jerk. Throwing his money around won’t help to bring her back and he has even shocked his friends with his actions, especially his younger brother Jimmy, who she had helped. Nana Dee’s health issues should have been a chance to reunite, but Natasha has been deeply hurt by Trent and seeing him is just too difficult a hurdle to overcome, no matter the circumstances. Nana Dee has seen most of her Lost Boys fall in love, with even a second chance for Dom, but she won’t be fooled by Trent’s actions, as the signs of a perfect match are there for all to see, except maybe not the couple involved!

Another entertaining read in this bosshole series, with a feisty female MC who can only put up with so much before she blows, and a millionaire CEO who has spent most of his adult life looking after his brother and his Nana Dee, as well as the company his parents almost destroyed. They say hate is akin to love and these two certainly manage to show that in full force, even as they try to deny any attraction. I loved how his friend called out his attraction to her after the coffee shop incident, as Trent admired her figure as she walked away and couldn’t take his eyes off her. She was certainly up to the challenge of calling this bosshole out when needed and his staff loved her for it. How Trent could even think her responsible for what happened to Jimmy is beyond comprehension, showing just how far gone he was, allowing his anger to overcome common sense. A lovely HEA to an entertaining love story that will pull you in all directions. I loved the connection between all of the Lost Boys and Nana Dee and how that showed another side to Trent. Certainly a book and even a series to pick up if you can. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Natasha has always dreamed of selling her own furniture line. She works three crappy jobs in order to pay rent while also fulfilling furniture orders. When she gets fired from one of her jobs because of a cocky man she’s termed Coffeezilla, she’s at a loss. NYC is an expensive place, and she doesn’t quite make enough from her custom orders to pay for rent. Very quickly an opportunity presents itself to make various pieces for a client. But when she turns up at the client’s home she discovers that her new client is also the man who caused her to get fired.

Trent Saunders is the CEO of his grandparents’ furniture company. After taking the helm when his divorced parents nearly ran the company into the ground, he managed to take the company into a successful direction. Looking to create a line of sustainable furniture and quickly noticing Natasha’s talent, he offers a job on the design team at his company. Trent has a lot on his plate. His grandmother has a heart condition that requires her to have surgery, which she stubbornly refuses to do. When she mistakenly thinks Natasha is his girlfriend, he continues the facade in order to hopefully entice her to get the life saving surgery. As the two work closer together they begin to let the walls down. Trent has a lot of trust issues, and when an issue arises that makes him question Natasha’s loyalty will the two be able to get past it?

Boy was the heat coming off the pages. I loved the witty banter between Natasha and Trent and enjoyed the ride as they start to fall for each other. While this book is part of a series, it could be read as a standalone though I am curious to read the previous books to see Trent’s friends find their own happily ever afters.

I really loved both characters. Natasha doesn’t take any BS from anyone, and I liked that she stood her ground after the third act conflict. She really made Trent work for it, and I wholeheartedly approve. I liked the two of them together. They really complemented each other, and their relationship felt earnest. Each made themselves vulnerable and let the other see sides of them that they normally keep hidden. I loved their journey. I also loved their relationships with the side characters. There is a clear message of sometimes family is the one you choose. They each had strong support systems, and I felt that added layers to the characters. We got to see how they were when they felt safe and supported and how that translated into their own relationship.

I’m not typically a fan of third act conflicts, but this one worked given Trent’s past. I also appreciated that Natasha made him work for her forgiveness. He did say some very hurtful things, but he owned up to it, and it wasn’t easily brushed aside.

This was a very engaging read with the right mix of romance and spice. I really enjoyed it, and will definitely check out Ms. North’s other books.

A Grumpy Sunshine Billionaire Boss Romance
(Manhattan Bossholes, Book 3)
By: Leslie North
Narrated by: Chloe Ryan, Sebastian Grove

It is great to be back in Leslie North’s “Manhattan Bossholes” world again for another wonderful romance novel featuring another grumpy billionaire boss, Trent Sanders. Natasha is a furniture designer just getting her business off the ground and works at a coffee shop to make ends meet. When a rude customer ignores her warnings, she tells him off to put him in his place, which her boss overhears and fires her. In an odd twist of faith, that same rude customer, Trent Saunders, comes to her to design a few pieces of furniture pieces for his grandmother. Needing the money she is not in a position to say no, and she is ecstatic to learn his grandmother, his Nana Dee, is a furniture designer and her idol. She travels with Trent to his Nana’s home, and when they get there, Nana thinks they are a couple, and it is the first time Trent has seen her smile in a while, so he wants Natasha to go along with it. She agrees to play along within reason, and she lands a job at his company, the family’s furniture business, for her efforts. It was fun to watch Trent and Natasha’s brilliant and equally matched witty exchanges. It was great watching them get to know each other and see their relationship morph into something more. When conflict arises with his parents, he blows it and loses the best thing that happened in his life, Natasha. There is never a dull moment in this book, and the story has a perfect balance of drama, angst, humor, witty dialogue, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. It was great to see characters from the first two books, Trent’s found family, love the camaraderie amongst them, also loved his relationship with his brother by blood, too. Leslie North, thanks for another fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧  Chloe Ryan and Sebastian Grove were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life, giving each a voice that was fitting and was believable in every role. Both nailed it as the two leads, grasping every aspect of their character’s personality and demeanor perfectly. Ryan was a natural as Natasha, handling her witty dialogue with ease and Grove was just as fabulous in Trent’s role, grumpy alpha-tude and all. Their tone and pacing is just right for the story, and they captured all the characters’ emotions, having you feeling them all. They are entertaining storytellers, and their captivating performance keeps you glued to the story.

Natasha loved designing and making furniture, but, she had to work as a waitress/barista to make ends meet. In the course of her duties she meets a man on the phone and tries to warn him to not sit at the clearly out of order sign on one of the tables. When he places his very hot coffee drink on it, the table tilts and it ends up on him. She disliked him immediately, 1, because he sounded like he was being mean to his father. Family means everything to Natasha. More happens and she ends up getting fired. Trent is the CEO of Saunders Furniture, and the one who received snark and attitude from Natasha. His friend Aiden meets up with Trent. I love how snarky Natasha is. She is hilarious with the words she makes up regarding Trent. I love the group of guys that Trent and Aiden belong to. They are good men and I got a big kick out of them. Nana Dee, is Trent’s grandmother, but she was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure and he is worried sick about her because she is just “accepting it” and not doing things to help herself. It broke my heart learning about Nana Dee and Trent’s family and his past. Trent and his group of friends are Nana Dee’s Lost Boys. I love that. Besides Trent, the Lost Boys include AIden, Vincent, Paul and Dominic. I love them. Jimmy is Trent’s younger brother that is in Princeton and he is freaking out about Nana too which is affecting his school work. I really dislike Trent’s parents and I’m glad that he took over the business from them. I also love that Trent calls Natasha what he does. lol. It makes me laugh every time I see it. Stacey, Natasha’s bestie is a riot and awesome and on the crazy impulsive side. lol. Natasha gets an email from someone whose grandmother loves one of her pieces- a desk. Yup. I knew it and you do too. lol. Things go total mischief and mayhem from there on out- part of the problem is that Trent and Natasha are so attracted to each other that they refuse to allow themselves to feel it, until it gets reallllllly bad. lol. Nana Dee’s nurse, Sofia is awesome. The love between Trent and his Grandmother is so beautiful to see that sometimes I teared up while reading. But she is a riot too. I laughed a lot during the book. Wanted to punch a few people a few times too. Totally needed my AC on from the beginning from the angst and the steaminess of the chemistry between Trent and Natasha. Things I never saw coming happened and then more mayhem ensued. OMG, the book was sooooo good. I want to read more about the rest of the Lost Boys. They are soooo cute. I really enjoyed the book.

𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴! 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘬 :)

۶ৎ 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩. designed for disaster tells the story of natasha dryer as she clashes with trent saunders at her job, resulting in her losing her job and eventually being hired at his furniture company. the two fake date in order to make trent's nana happy given her poor health as of late. things turn sour between the pair after trent's mother attempts to have him fired and claims natasha gave her the information needed to take him down. they split, get back together shortly after a conversation clears things up, and get married.
۶ৎ 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭. i have to say i just didn't like this as much as the previous two books and i'm a bit disappointed by it. like i said in my last review, it feels like each story has the same plot with only a few little differences to fit the characters and such and i really felt it this time. it just gets to a point where it's not enjoyable to read about almost identical scenarios over and over again and i found myself dreading picking this up.
the characters in this story were also just really bland compared to the others in this trilogy. trent was a complete dick and his background and family life failed to make me feel sorry for him at all. the way he treated natasha was completely inexcusable and his apology to her was absurd. he literally just bought her over with money after she said she didn't want him to. natasha also just felt very bland, her backstory once again didn't make me feel a thing. it's meant to be sad but it just didn't bring those emotions out, i was completely stone-faced reading about her parents dying and all of her others traumas. overall they were probably my least favorite couple of the entire series.
i loved seeing the other characters make an appearance though. vincent and piper, aiden and cora, paul and chloe, they really all bring something to the story and it's so lovely seeing their family come together when one of them is really struggling. in addition to this, stacy and dominic's relationship was super sweet and i loved their moments together. dare i say i would have rather had a book about them rather than trent and natasha...
۶ৎ 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬. overall it was just a pretty bland conclusion and lacked anything and everything that could possibly make it unique. however, it did have it's sweet moments that make up for the other not-so-great parts.

Natasha is a struggling furniture designer. She is currently working multiple jobs to make ends meet. That is until a grumpy customer gets her fired from her job as a barista. Trent runs his family’s furniture empire. He has a lot of weight to carry. Imagine his surprise when he orders a piece of custom furniture for his grandmother only to discover that the barista he got fired is the artist! They fake a relationship to keep his grandmother happy but maybe it will turn into something more.

This is a cute story. Natasha had loving parents until they died in a house fire. She loves making bespoke furniture pieces but it just doesn’t pay the bills. I like that the author gave Natasha a solid backstory. Her ex-boyfriend is a jerk. Her best friend is a fun and flirty costume designer. She feels alone most days since losing her parents. Overall, Natasha is a good, modern heroine. Trent is the character in this story that has a major growth curve. From the outside Trent looks wildly successful. From the inside his life is painful and complex. Through most of the story he waits for someone to wrong him which makes him an unstable partner. He has to hurt Natasha in order to begin dealing with his horrible childhood. All of Trent’s friends make an appearance. Trent’s grandmother is a huge part of the story.

If you have been reading this series you might note that this in ANOTHER fake relationship story. Fear not! The characters address the issue directly. I guess the author realized that readers might question why one series would have two fake relationship stories.

This is a contemporary romance. Both of the main characters are adults with complicated backgrounds and busy careers. The author sets up the next story in the series in this book (if I’m wrong about that, I’ll be shocked). I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

A fun and easy read - I read it in one day!

This book is the third in the Manhattan Bosshole series but my first book in the series.

The story follows Natasha, a barista and aspiring bespoke furniture designer, and the wealthy Trent, CEO of Saunders Furniture. Following a not so cute, meet-cute at the coffee shop where Natasha works - earning Natasha the nickname of Hellcat and Trent Coffeezilla - Natasha is fired. When Trent unknowingly commissions Natasha for a custom piece for his Nana Dee, the twos paths cross again. Unfortunately Nana Dee is suffering from congestive heart failure and to keep her happy (I won't go in to detail and spoil the story) Trent asks Natasha to be his fake girlfriend and given his business, it also presents Natasha with a great career opportunity. But the two can't deny the sparks they really feel.

I like a fiesty female character and an MMC who has more to him than meets the eye. In addition, Trent and Natasha have good banter and great chemistry. You can feel the sparks which I loved however I would have liked to feel more of the emotional connection.

My favourite part was absolutely the secondary characters- they have so much warmth and personality. And bring a lot of depth to the story.

This book has a lot of tropes but they work well for the story.
💘 Enemies to lovers
💵 Billionaire boyfriend
💑 Fake dating
💻 Work place (boss/employee) romance
🫂 Forced proximity
👨‍👦‍👦 Family drama
6️⃣ An unknown 'six degrees of separation'

... and it also includes my least favourite and the most frustrating trope (across all mediums), miscommunication which leads to unnecessary drama.

This was well written and I do like the way the chapters alternate between Trent and Natasha's perspectives. Whilst predicable it was a warm, fun and easy to read story.

Thanks to NetGalley and Relay Publishing for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Leslie North's Design for Disaster, narrated by Chloe Ryan and Sebastian Grove, is a delightful journey from instant loathing to unexpected love. This romantic comedy plunges us into the chaotic first encounter between Natasha, a talented furniture designer stuck in a barista job, and Trent Saunders, the "Coffeezilla" who accidentally torpedoes her career. Their initial meeting is a hilarious clash of personalities, leaving Natasha convinced Trent is nothing short of arrogant and obnoxious. And honestly, who could blame her after he gets her fired over a spilled coffee?

Yet, as fate would have it, this "gorgeous grump" turns out to be the answer to Natasha’s professional prayers. Trent needs a high-end furniture designer for his grandmother, and despite their rocky start, Natasha is the perfect fit. The plot truly thickens when Trent’s sweet, albeit mistaken, grandmother assumes Natasha is his girlfriend, leading to a fake dating scenario that’s both exasperating and undeniably charming.

The story moves at a brisk pace, blending the fake relationship trope with genuine emotional family drama and business challenges. It’s particularly enjoyable to see Trent shed his "villain" facade and reveal a surprisingly sweet, caring side, especially through his interactions with characters from previous books in the series. This allows Natasha—and the reader—to see beyond his initial gruff exterior.

Watching Trent confront his past demons, make crucial decisions, and ultimately embrace true love makes for a truly engaging read. Chloe Ryan and Sebastian Grove’s narration brings Natasha and Trent's personalities to life, making their bickering and eventual connection even more compelling. If you enjoy a quick, funny romance with a strong fake-relationship plot and a dose of emotional growth, Design for Disaster is definitely worth picking up.
