THE FOURTH POWER is a spectacular and riveting space opera written and illustrated by Juan Gimenez, best known for his work on the legendary sci-fi graphic novel series THE METABARONS.
Wow, this is hot garbage. Literacy is a trap. Most people can read and write, which causes them to suffer from the delusion they can tell stories. Except they can’t. Gimenez is one of these sufferers. He’s taken bits of Akira and Star Wars and Dune and mixed them into an incoherent slurry. I’m sure he thinks this is interesting and has a point, but he’s wrong on both counts.
Mine is the books 1+2 edition with different cover (Read #1 in Heavy Metal Magazine: January 1990)
At no point did I understand what was going on. NEVER. I couldn't even see the big picture. It's incredibly complicated and unexciting even though it's entirely action.
The art is very good but not my style. It's like he's constantly trying to gross you out. Also, he fits too much onto a page.
Juan Gimenez's art is the reason to pick this up. The Metabarons series, with Gimenez's amazing work, was one of the reasons I started reading comics again, so I have had a persistent curiousity about this book. I find the premise kind of stiff and it took me a while to get through the first half of this. The second half of the book is where it gets good and weird. Gimenez can draw some gorgeous shit, but he is really best when he's going batshit crazy.
However, if Fables was a letdown, at least I finished it. I couldn't even get that far with The Fourth Power.
Sci-fi trappings, a woman engineered to be the ultimate weapon, intergalactic war and elaborate space and ship sequences combine in a story with dull, tepid characters and no real point. On the plus side, Gimenez's art is lushly detailed, graphic and intense. However, he could work on establishing a frame of reference for his action sequences better, because I had trouble following most of them.
This was....okay. I enjoyed the action scenes and the large scale space opera of the book (and, full disclosure, the pretty women with improbable chest measurements), but I found the story itself hard to follow sometimes, and it didn't always make a whole lot of sense. I don't regret reading it, certainly, but at least for me I think there was little that really stands out as unforgettable.
I kind of like the art and it has that Heavy Metal Magazine type feel! The problem that I have is the story feels really stiff and goes off in some weird directions. I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't quite get into it. I think it's worth checking out some of the authors other works like The Metabarons.
The artwork is beautiful to go through, the story is decently paced, and the premise doesn't disappoint too much.
Jimenez's mesmerizing illustrations are from another world. And the entire human-like aliens that are much more intelligent, but are losing a war against humanity trope reads as if it was taken out of a Moebius comic, but given a darker treatment.
The drawing is superb, the story is where this one falters. It's kind of confusing ar first. The second half is much better although it feels kind of rushed and trivial. In other words , it's not unreadable and the art is well worth the time invested.
