I haven’t read a YA book like this in quite sometime! Wow this was a journey. I fell in love with so many of the characters. The world was unique, and this was an adventure. The setting felt vivid and well developed. The author’s writing was smooth and easy to follow. I can’t wait to read book 2! I love fantasy, as well as dystopian, and this checked off both in my opinion. This book is worth reading if you enjoy that genre. It is an excellent read and I highly recommend picking it up!!

I have given this book 5* as I was absolutely hooked from the moment I started! I was lucky enough to recieve an advanced copy of this and I was delighted that it truely reignited my love of fantasy books. The character development, the way we meet them and how we learn about them as individuals but also as a group was super. I also found the imagery in this book to be incredible- I could really imagine in my head the world the author was creating and I got completely lost in this world while reading!

I had the absolute privilege to have an advanced copy of this book. I was hooked from page one. The author has that ability which is so important to a reader to really bring her characters and scenery to life. The storyline is gripping, a difficult book to put down once you start. By the end you are demanding book 2. Truly one of my best reads. I felt so sad years ago when I finished the hobbit and Lord of the Rings. This fills the gap. Looking forward to seeing what I hope will be the film version!

An engaging dystopian YA fantasy that feels realistic and will keep you reading until the last page.

Despite this book essentially dumping you into the center of the world with very little buildup, I found it extremely easy to get a feel for both the worldbuilding,as well as the conflicts within this book. Everything has a sense of realism to it, that makes even the more fantastical elements seem grounded in reality. Once I began reading, I was hooked until I finished a few hours later, and not once did I hit a slow point that made me consider going to bed before finishing this novel. I also love how the ending sets up the conflict for the story to continue, and I cannot wait to see how this story moves forward in the next installment.

Rin is a fantastic main character, and while one might be inclined to believe she is simply “too good” at everything she tries, I never found myself doubting her. I also loved how there was an in-universe explanation that made everything make sense, but that it’s not something obvious from first glance. Her characterization is relatable and realistic, and never once did I not find myself rooting for her success as I read her journey.

I will admit to being the first to not always like the romances placed in these kinds of stories, but Ieuan was such a fantastic supporting character and friend to Rin no matter what, that I found myself rooting for him anyway. Their closeness and romance feels natural, especially when Rin begins the book not fully understanding both his - and potentially her own - changed feelings towards each other. However, I loved how Ieuan cared and loved Rin as a friend first and foremost, and despite not overtly hiding his feelings towards her, he never makes her feel like she has to choose him in a romantic context, or that his help and support is only hinged upon it. I also love how Ieuan uses this trait of his to help the other characters in this story, and that Rin not only recognizes him doing this - she is able to vocalize it to help a fragmented relationship mend as well.

I loved the other supporting characters, as they all felt real and unique. Never once did I have difficulty determining who was speaking, which can be a difficult thing to do when a book has many speaking characters in it and sometimes their narrative voices begin to blend together. While the characters grew and changed, and their interactions with one another grew along with the story, at no point was their characterization lost to move the plot forward.

I also loved how we, as the reader, could determine many of the twists and reveals within the book before the protagonists, at no point did it feel like this information was intentionally left out for the story to progress, or like it was unrealistic for the main character to not have realized these things sooner. I enjoy when I can determine plot twists early on in the novel, as well as when the book has a fantastic foundation for them, and yet I never once questioned Rin herself never realizing these same things.

This is a brilliant addition to the dystopian ya sphere and I believe anyone who enjoys stories with an overlying conflict, an oppressive government, and a small group of oppressed trying their best to save each other would love this novel. Fast-paced with a momentum that never slows down until the last page, I loved The Generation Archives and I cannot wait to read more of this world.

A huge thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Cranthorpe Millner Publishers for providing this e-ARC.

For anyone who enjoys reading fantasy fiction this is a must read book. The story is original, well thought out and very well written.

I was lucky enough to have received an advanced copy to review, and it was most definitely a page turner from start to finish.

The structure and pace of the story increases the reading experience with each chapter. All the characters feel authentic and their interaction natural; you really feel that the relationships and drama between the characters is real.

The relationships between the main character Rin and Ieuan are best friends, but has a romantic aspect hanging in the air that feels like it has grown over the years with their friendship. Rin is a fantastic main character, the twists and turns as her story unfolds is superbly written. The reveals during her journey are perfectly timed and the drama will keep you wanting more.

One of my favorite characters is Lark, a hard stroppy character with a tounge like a razor blade. I loved her interactions with the other characters, especially Rin. Although Lark is cutting and harsh she has a well guarded and hidden caring side, is smart, experienced and has a good grip on reality, although somewhat impulsive.

The setting for the story is original and well laid out. The backstory is created nicely at the start of the book but is fully developed as the story goes on. It allows for eureka moments but at the same time gives just enough information as the story progresses for the reader to suddenly realize certain plot twists.

The creatures and settings are very creative and clever and used brilliantly to create imagery and drama.

I was totally immersed in the story when I started reading it and didnt want to put it down. It grips you and keeps you wanting more. An excellent read!

this book is majorly giving The Maze Runner meets Red
Queen

an all new YA dystopian fantasy and omg i loved it!! i literally stayed up until 2am last night to finish this.
i adored the found family in this book and all the side characters were just as well thought out and well developed as the main ones and just as loveable and perfectly flawed in their own way. the plot kept me hooked from page one and there was never a dull moment. also the romance in this is so cute and so natural that i was routing for them from the beginning and that never happens for me

i can't wait for you all to read this book, it really makes you feel like you're back in your dystopian obsessed teenage years

the only critique i have is at the beginning the sentence
"i'm not like other girls" was used but i quickly overlooked it because everything else was amazing and it was never mentioned again Imao!

A spine-tingling tapestry depicting a dystopian world that feels hauntingly familiar.
The Generation Archives is the explosive debut by R.R. Boxall, following the misadventures of Rin as the world she had once known is suddenly and irrevocably turned on its head.
With the unwavering support of her childhood friend Ieuan, Rin must align with those whom years of indoctrination say she should be most afraid. However, like even Rin’s own heritage, nothing is quite as she had been led to believe, and she is forced into a colossal task to uncover the bitter truth.

If I had to guess, I would say that The Generation Archives was written post-March 2020, portraying a marred portrait in which abused science, climate change, and human instincts converge in a worryingly plausible way.

The world is beautifully (or perhaps rather ‘bleakly’) described, the characters are well-developed and unique (watch out for Cornelius - he was a personal favourite of mine), and the overarching plot is compelling, inventive, and expertly delivered.

I am someone who appreciates great writing and The Generation Archives falls comfortably in that camp, with well-crafted sentences and a clear attention to detail.
My only complaint (small enough that I nearly didn’t include it at all but thought I may be doing a disservice by not mentioning it) is that Boxall does on occasion over-explain, particularly when it comes to character emotions, thoughts, or reading one another’s expressions. This is really just a personal preference in that I like to have a little breathing space in the subtext from which to draw my own conclusions.
This one irk, however, is vastly outweighed by the many things I loved about this book.

All in all, The Generation Archives was an absolute pleasure to read and I sincerely hope Boxall has Book 2 ready to go because I’m not sure how I’m going to rest until Rin gets back to Renegades’ Cove.

Received this on a Goodreads giveaway. What a wonderful engaging book. I loved being thrown into a world that words build up as you go, not just laid out at the beginning. I'm totally not a fan of a cliffhanger ending and that's what keeps me from five stars, but this one did work in the context of the story. Read it at almost one sitting. Rin is an engrossing character that's fun to watch grow and evolve.

The Generation Archives
Thank you to Netgalley and Cranthorpe Milner for the ARC of this novel. I LOVED this book. It gave me the feeling that I had as a teenager falling into a new book world.

Rin is just a girl living in a post-plague world where the infected become Immutavi: mindless, dangerous beasts with a penchant for brutality. When three strangers show up in her small village her life gets turned upside down as she learns new truths about her world and those in it (including herself).

I can’t say enough how good this book was. The writing was so well done, with perfect pacing to keep me wanting to turn the page and read “just the next chapter!”. The world building while confusing during the first few pages, unraveled very well throughout, and I liked how Rin learned things as the reader did. Speaking of Rin, what a great character! She went through such a great character arc of being naive and thinking herself helpless to strong and confident in her abilities. Her relationships with Lark, Tilly, and Ieuan were very well done. The storyline was interesting too! I love a good classic journey and this one was fantastic. Nothing boring about it, with enough of reality to make it believable. I absolutely need to know what happens next, and can’t wait for the next one!!

Really enjoyed this book, it was absolutely brilliant! Really well written and I couldn’t put the book down. Best thing I’ve read in this genre since The Hunger Games. I loved escaping into the Immutavi world and all the characters. It would be fab to see this made into a film! Can’t recommend it highly enough 🙌🙌 Bring on Book 2 asap!

thank you so much to cranthorpe millner for a copy!

the generation archives is a ya dystopian fantasy that follows Rin, who grew up safe and protected in the Dale, a society that fears the immutavi (people infected by a virus, turning them into monsters). when three new people arrive, she ends up doubting everything she has ever known and finds out new truths about her world and everyone within it.

this was such a fun read and i loved the writing. everything was paced well, the world building was interesting and easy to follow, and the monsters were so cool tbh. i loved getting immersed into this, and the political intrigue was top notch. also, the plot twists were so good!!

Rin is a great fmc and i loved following her throughout. she had great development as we went on and her friendship with Ieuen was everything. Ieuen was amazing and i love him so much. i loved their bond sm.

overall, it just brought me back to my high school days where almost everything i read was dystopian. it has immaculate vibes overall. i can't wait for book 2!!

What a fantastic start to a new series by a new author!

Dystopian YA - this book is about humans and Tavi (enhanced human). The worldbuilding was unique and plentiful, the characters were well written, there’s an animal companion which I love in a book!

I’m not sure how many books will be in the series but I’m invested and cannot wait for book 2!

Thank you so much to Cranthorpe Millner for allowing me the opportunity to offer an ARC Review of The Generation Archives!

This fast paced novel is perfect for any YA dystopian fantasy lovers, following a group of teenagers as they navigate life after making groundbreaking discoveries about both themselves, and the world they live in.

“It was comforting to know that, even now, so long after the darker days of war, the Empire was still protecting them.”

The character development for each member of their group is fascinating to read through - you feel emotionally invested in them by about a quarter way through and it is a nice change to be rooting for every character in a story!

Scratch is fantastic, I loved reading through his scenes and how he really becomes an invaluable member of the unit as they travel along their way. I am a sucker for a dog in a story, even if they are swamp mutt!!

The use of changing POV for added impact in certain high-action scenes is ingenious and really builds upon the exciting atmosphere.

Subtle addressing of things such as mental health and potential PTSD are very well-written and I was really rooting for Tilly to get past her demons. There are also some other major topics looked at throughout this story, looking at the differences between rich and poor and the unfair killing/ treatment of people with different abilities.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it has been on my mind since I finished it. Hopefully the wait for the next instalment isn’t too long as I can’t wait to read what happens next.

The Generation Archives is a fantastic first book in a series I can't wait to continue!
I really love the post-apocaliptic, virus led human mutiations vibes, and this book really captured my attention from the first page.
It takes place 100 years after the fall from the age of greatnes, where the Immutavi, a species of sub-human, invaded the world. There was a massive war that ended with the destruction of the Immutavi, and a very delicate balance is now in place. Rin lives in the Dale, a protected village, with her herbalist adoptive grandmother, as Rin was found in the swamp age 6. Something than happens that has Rin questioning everything the government and everyone around ever told her about the world. She embarks in an incredibly dangerous journey to find out the truth about the world and herself.
The writing was fast paced, atmospheric and tense, it kept me guessing at every twist and turn, never knowing what to expect. The complexity of the characters in the story was varied, with multifaceted aspect to everyone that really made me want to know more about every character's backstory.
The science behind it was so interesting and I can't wait to delve into this world more.
This book was a 4 star read for me, the history and the science behind I absolutely loved, and it opens up beautifully to the next book in the series. I can't wait to read it!

Absolutely loved it 🥰

This is a brilliant 🤩 dystopian style novel that had me hooked and wanting more!!
It followed the character of Rin (Erin) and her life story. She then makes a mistake which costs her a lot!! I won’t say too much as it will spoil the book.
But I really liked Erin I felt she was stubborn, confident and honest. All which I related to and I love that in a novel!

Now as I said the pace of this book was so good I had to finish it in one sitting! It had great plot development and even twists which I didn’t see coming. Which is always nice 😊 and makes me enjoy it more.

I loved the siblings in the story too! Lark and Recce they had a proper classic sibling relationship no hugging 🤗 more a punch in the arm type. But I really enjoyed the relationship they portrayed and can’t wait to see where it goes.

I loved Ieuan and Rin together in their little blossoming love ❤️ for one another. So it will be fun to see where that heads in the next book!

I can’t wait for book 2 ! Again thank you ☺️ for my copy really refreshing dystopian read!

Just the kind of book I was looking for!

Talk about starting the year off with a bang! This YA fantasy is an adventure from page one and it's safe to say I devoured this, no literally, I couldn't put this down for even a second. Boxall has a way of writing characters that you instantly love and connect too, Rin is so likeable that I actually want to be her friend even if I have to live alongside her in this dystopian world she resides in.

This author pulls no punches and essentially throws you into the deep end with this novel, get ready for adventure cause this book is a roller coaster ride filed with fun and unique characters, twists and turns and a plot like nothing you've ever seen before. It's safe to say I cannot wait for the next book in this series and will be on the edge of my seat until I can get my hands on it.

I really enjoyed this read. I found it to be well written, the characters were likeable and the story was just amazing. I haven’t enjoyed a dystopian book like this since I read the Hunger Games. The world building is great, you can really feel what Erin is going through and there is just the sweetest first love romance bubbling between the FMC and MMC. Whilst this is YA I still enjoyed it and felt it still had the depth needed to be a great read. There were fight scenes, there was action and adventure. And then ending??? Omg why? I’m begging to read the next book as I just have to know what happens. Superb debut read and would thoroughly recommend to everyone to read.

I must start by saying the writing in this book is incredible. I was completely immersed in this dystopian world from the very start. Boxall really makes you feel like you’re there, it’s what I like to call an ~escapism read~ and that’s a credit to her writing talent.

I also thoroughly enjoyed reading about a heroine with the same name as me 😌😂 it’s rare that happens, so even though she’s mainly known as Rin instead of Erin, I will take it anyway!

The characters in the story are great. I loved Rin and Ieuan, plus the others we meet along the way such as Lark and Cornelius. All of them added something to the story and made it all the more enjoyable.

Thank you so much to the author and publisher for sending me an early copy. I really enjoyed reading this upcoming release. Make sure it’s on your radar for 2025!

4.5*

'...the body can only take so much, even if the spirit remains willing'

The last time I was pulled into a dystopian world with such beautiful, poetic writing was when I read The Hunger Games for the first time. The way R.R Boxall has been able to write a completely unknown dystopian world yet enabling me to envision every sight, sound and smell is brilliant and I was left wanting more at the end of the book - in a good way!

The story is encapsulating - it flows beautifully and doesnt feel too overwhelming or busy. Each character has a reason to be there and each one brings something unique to the story - I love Lark and I really think Cornelius is a fantastic character and adds a needed humorous moment.

This is YA - so of course closed door / no spice. All interactions / relationships were genuine and believable.

I truly enjoyed this book and I am excited for others to read it once its released!

Thank you to NetGalley and Cranthorpe Miller for an ARC of this novel. Unfortunately, The Generation Archives was absolutely not to my liking.

Sometimes I think I’m just not the target audience for Young Adult, but there are plenty of YA books I honestly enjoy. This wasn’t one of them. We follow Rin, who grew up under the watchful eye of her adopted grandmother, as she and her best friend Ieuan escape from their village with a group of mysterious strangers. The premise of a dystopian world with mutated humans is interesting but inconsistent - I never got a handle on what the average technology level or living situation was in this world, and Rin is too incurious about her own village to provide us with that information. She just ambles along with the plot, “realizing” and “instinctively knowing” things that have just been stated to her.

In addition, the pacing is all over the place, with the story dragging to almost the 30% mark before the plot kicks in. Most of the rest of the book is devoted to travel, but the return journey for the end-of-book heist takes place over a handful of pages. This book needed to be tightened up a *lot* - the arrival at the Cove should've been the midpoint of the book, with more time devoted to getting the information about the immutavi chips. Either that, or build up the characters and spend the whole first book on the journey to the Cove and Rin exploring the world she’s never seen. There’s a lot of potential here, but it just feels squandered.

One of my least favorite aspects of the book is how Rin seems to hate every other female character that isn’t a) a caregiving figure, like her grandmother, or b) a child. There’s a scene at the village harvest festival where we meet a queen bee-type girl named Melody, who only seems to exist for us to see Rin one-up with the most childish insults I’ve seen outside of a Disney Channel show. In the time leading up to the harvest festival, Rin is disparaging about the opportunity for the girls of the village to dress up and do a little talent show, something which I imagine they don’t get a lot of opportunity to do in this DYSTOPIA. But no, Rin’s Not Like Other Girls (I cannot believe she actually said this) and she makes no secret of how the whole thing is stupid. I wish Rin had had a female friend she could’ve rooted for, even if she didn’t want to participate herself.

The only redeeming part of this book was Lark, a sharp-tongued young woman who’s even more done with Rin than I am. Her story about her past (related entirely via Rin’s narration, rather than dialogue) was compelling and would’ve made for a much more interesting novel than the one I read. I appreciated how Lark’s dedication to her younger brother superseded her own safety and desires; sure, she complained about not wanting to help, but she still did. She’s flawed, but also the most relatable character in the book.

(Rin hates Lark and thinks that if Lark didn’t know the way to their destination, she’d leave her behind without a second thought. Are we surprised?)

This book ends on a cliffhanger to set up a sequel, and I wish the author the best, but I will not be reading it.

Trope: dystopian YA romance
It’s the post apocalypse world, not due to nuclear war like many Dystopian novels but by nature. An earth stripped of resources, with ever changing weather conditions changing the topography. The people, the haves at war with the have nots. What happens when society falls, but no one remembers how to survive? What happens when governments crumble and all that’s left are the corrupt? What happens when the people start falling ill?
In this story the author creates a world where we have before the fall and after. Through careful character creation the story comes to life. You fall in love or hate with the characters. In this fast paced novel we follow Rin on her adventure, one thing she learns is who and what she really is. How will it all play out? You’re going to have to read to find out. And I for one suggest you do. This was a book I could not put down once I started reading. Pick up your copy today. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Well, I've finished reading The Generation Archives and I loved it!
Congratulations to R.R. Boxall on writing an exciting and vivid page turner debut. I liked the combination of mystery, adventure, romance and action. I've read many, many books in my lifetime, my first love being science fiction and then moving onto science fantasy or fantasy amongst other genres. Michael Moorcock was a particular early favourite of mine, his eternal champion books had a recurring character called "Jerry Cornelius" who, of course I thought about when we encountered the enigmatic character of the same last name! There were a few other characters that appeared in your work that were like easter eggs in my life which was a bit eerie but thrilling! Anyway I can't wait for the next in this series.
Suffice to say this story will linger in my mind for a long time....

R R Boxall is a brand new author to me but based on this debut novel, I will definitely be keeping an eye on any future releases.

The Generation Archives is a Dystopian YA story based a young and feisty FMC called Rin (Erin).
Like all citizens of The Empire, Rin is fully aware of the ever present threat of an invasion by the Immutavi.
The Immutavi are those unfortunate citizens struck down by the curse that causes their body to mutate and change and become a threat to others.
But when some Immutavi reach out to Marta, Rin's caregiver for help, they find themselves on the run from the Empires soldiers and so sets the scene for finding the source of the Immutavi curse and discovering whether they really are the monsters they are made to be?

I just finished reading this and found it really thought provoking. Lately I have been working on my family tree and talking with relatives, especially my grandmother who just turned 100, about our family history. Reading this while doing that made the book hit a little differently. The way it explores memory, legacy, and how stories and knowledge get passed down really stuck with me. Some parts were dense or abstract, but overall it made me reflect on how truth and history are shaped over time, both in families and in the bigger picture.
