i picked up the book on the last day of my amsterdam visit, just as i was thinking i'd found almost nothing that would call me back to the city I knew as amsterdam. while reading the book, i met and greeted the plurality hidden beneath the monoculture’s smooth surface. now, i know “we are here” is more than a sticker; it’s a struggle for the right to be as you are; the right to the presence, visibility, a shelter.

i live in kreuzberg, which many call dirty. this book reminded me not only why I love that “dirtiness,” but also how the hidden dirt is ready to show itself, to the eyes that can see it, sometimes as a sticker, sometimes as a book in an anarchist bookstore.

Een divers en vooral actueel boek. Ik vind het mooi dat een diversiteit aan auteurs heeft bijgedragen aan dit boek. Van mensen uit de daklozenwereld tot kunstenaars tot academici, of jonge krakers en huurstakers. Er is kritische analyse van de woningcrisis, hoe deze ontstaan is, hoe mensen daar mee omgaan en wat de verwachtingen voor de toekomst zijn. Het heeft voor mij meer antwoorden en stof tot nadenken gegeven voor vragen zoals "waarom zijn de huren zo hoog?" Of "ga ik ooit een huis kunnen kopen? En zo nee hoezo dan niet?". Het klinkt allemaal behoorlijk ingewikkeld, maar zo op een rijtje gezet zoals in dit boek is het antwoord eigenlijk vrij simpel maar frustrerend. Huizen worden simpelweg niet meer gebouwd om in te wonen, maar om in te investeren. Toch schept de creativiteit waarmee mensen in het boek proberen om te gaan met het probleem toch ook hoop dat het woonsysteem anders kan, en geeft het de boodschap dat we er tot die tijd geen genoegen mee hoeven nemen.

Leuke en mooie samenstelling van verhalen uit de kraakwereld en alle vormen van woonactivisme. Geeft een mooi inzicht in wat momenteel speelt in Amsterdam, en vooral wat er nog moet gebeuren. Het ene stuk doet meer dan het andere, en niet alles is even interessant (voor mij) maar dat lijkt me ook het punt, je zoekt uit wat resoneert en dat blijft bij. gelukkig is er genoeg om uit te kiezen. Help een handje, kraak een pandje.

Schitterend initiatief van de kraakbeweging. Een mooie verzameling perspectieven van verschillende groepen uit Amsterdam. Van ongedocumenteerden tot feministen die allemaal te maken krijgen met onze woningmarkt.

Amazing book. The writers did an amazing job showing how intersectional the topic of the housing struggle in Amsterdam is. The different types of storytelling (stories, interviews, photos) made it very engaging. Must read.

Wisselende stukken, niet alles even goed, maar zeker interessant! Toch wel geschreven vanuit anarchistisch perspectief, maar ook afwisselend genoeg voor mensen die een andere ideologie aanhangen. Bij tijden inspirerend, informerend en hoopvol. Woonrecht voor iedereen!

These essays and interviews were surprisingly nuanced and taught me so much about the act of squatting and its role in the history of Amsterdam and how we can utilise squatting techniques in an ever privatising urban environment
