To Love A Spy is the latest in the Merlin Maidens series by Andrea Pickens. I have enjoyed every story To Love A Spy is the latest in the Merlin Maidens series by Andrea Pickens. I have enjoyed every story but this one was somehow special because it was so unexpected. In each story, a specially trained Merlin is tasked with bringing down the enemy. These young ladies have unexpected talents and are a secret weapon of the government.

In this story, the unexpected takes center stage. When a critical mission arises, Lord Lynsley, the enigmatic head of Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies, must step into the field himself. Valencia Kestrel, a former Merlin who has spent the last decade quietly reinventing her life, stumbles upon Lord Lynsley injured on the beach near her home. Reluctantly, she takes him in and tends to his wounds.

Valencia Kestrel is a former Merlin and for the last ten years she has been living a good quiet life. She has never gotten over having her mission go badly, becoming hurt and having to leave her life as a Merlin behind. So when she unexpectedly comes across Lord Lynsley, hurt on the beach by her home she reluctantly takes him home and nurses his injuries.

Forced by circumstances, Lynsley seeks Valencia’s assistance. There’s always been an undercurrent of attraction between them, though Thomas never acted on it. Valencia, yearning for the excitement of her Merlin days and seeking a sense of vindication, cleverly maneuvers her way into the mission. Posing as an American industrialist and his wife, they embark on a thrilling adventure filled with danger, deception, and undeniable chemistry.

This story is captivating. The close proximity forces both characters to confront long-buried emotions. Thomas, previously perceived as stoic and reserved, reveals layers of intrigue, dynamism, and passion when paired with Valencia. Their constant bickering adds delightful tension, all while navigating the high-stakes mission and their growing desires.

Ultimately, To Love A Spy is a must-read for fans of the series. Perkins leaves us anticipating her next story when a new dynamic Merlin is introduced, hinting at exciting adventures to come. This novel is a true page-turner, filled with nonstop action and emotional resonance that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page. I am looking forward to the next book.

This is one of the best books I've read this year. It is a best to read the stories in order. This is a very special one as it includes Lord Lynsley as we haven't seen him before. In the other books he is the owner and master of the Academy along with Mrs. Marlin. Making sure the girls are trained for whatever may come up. He has always had a soft spot for Val but never let it show. Due to three of his top Merlin's leaving to get married he must take the important mission himself. Without a lot of information, he is forced to leave quickly which ends up with his ship going down in a storm. He is shocked to wake to the face of the one Merlin he has never been able to forget. The one mission that ended badly and left one of his agents near death. He has never forgiven himself. Valencia Kestrel was just a young girl of maybe twelve when she tried to pick the pocket of a young masques. Inside of turning her in he took her to the Academy and gave her a life. With shelter, food and reason to live. She and the rest of the girls were all half in love with him. Now it has been ten years since she saw him, and she will not let a chance to get even with the man who tried to kill her. Forcing Lynsley to take her with him on a very dangerous mission they must put their feelings and past behind them and work together or both may die. This story has so much passion, feeling, pain. Regret and tons of passion. Both have a lot to understand of the other and the villain is one of the worst. This is a very fast-moving story with lots of twist and turns, you will not be able to put it down. We also get a hint of more books to come. I can hardly wait. This series is not to be missed. I have loved all the books, but this is my favorite for sure. You will love the ending and don’t miss the epilogue for sure. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Skulking in Paris

“To Love a Spy” is book four in Andrea Pickens series entitled Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies. This installment in the series has the Merlin Academy leader, noble born Thomas Lynsley taking on an assignment of grave importance in Paris. When a squall upends his boat, Lynsley is reunited with former Merlin Valencia. Valencia left the Merlins after a devastating injury, however, she joins forces with Lynsley after learning about the job and the target. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel of spies, intrigue, witty banter, and simmering sexual tension. Both Lynsley and Valencia have their own reasons for undertaking a difficult assignment. Valencia is seeking redemption from her last mission when she was struck down with a near fatal wound. Her character was strong, intelligent, and well skilled from her classes at the academy. She had permanent damage from her injury but wasn’t going to let it get in her way. I liked her strong willed spirit. Lynsley needed to prove to himself he could still play spy games with the younger set. He had a strong sense of service to his country which was admirable. I liked both of these characters and the roles they played in the story. There was always a current between the two main characters they tried to ignore or bury. The longer they were on the mission together the tighter the current pulled them together. The damn had to break at some point. The story moves along at a steady pace, the spy angle amped up the action and the covert stealthing was thrilling. This historical romance, spy thriller, love story is definitely one I would recommend because it ticks so many boxes and seemlessly combines different genres. There is also lust, steam, and plenty of passion to round out the story. Well done, Andrea Pickens.

I love when an author can take a "job" filled usually by men and reverse it where women are filling the position and rocking it!!! This series has been chock full of some pretty awe-inspiring actions and HEA.

This adventure includes the Marquess of Lynsley (Thomas), Minister to the Secretary of State for War, who created and cultivated the Merlins. They were is secret group of warriors to help fight to keep the country safe. He doesn't usually go on missions himself, but there isn't time to pull together a team, formulate plans and gather the necessities. Fate steps into his personal plans giving him an ally and partner, Valencia. She was once a member of the Merlins and after a failed mission and injury she retires to a remote island.

This adventure brings Valencia and Thomas together to thwart a plan by a French operative to destroy the English navy. It looks good on paper, but emotions start to interfere. This was a great story that brought together two brilliant strategic minds together, but each is used to being in charge, so that creates tension making it occasionally harder than it needs to be. The villain was crafted perfectly making you dislike him and wish him to the dungeon or worse. The final confrontation had me sitting on the edge of the chair. Brilliant!!

I have enjoyed this series and this one did not disappoint. Ms. Pickens brings a perfect balance of tension, drama, mystery, and passion to the story. She has deep and thoughtful characters that have you engaged and caring from the first page. We did get to visit with a couple of friends from previous stories in the series, which was nice.

After a near-fatal injury left former Merlin Valencia with a permanent limp she retreated to a seaside village, opened a pub, and became part of a community. Though she misses the adventure and intrigue of her former life, things are going pretty well. Until Thomas Lynsley washes up on her shore. Why is her former boss half-dead on her beach? It turns out that Lynsley is off to put an end to a secret new technology that could turn the balance of power in France’s favor. The person he is looking for is the man who left Valencia with the limp. She wants in on the action. Lynsley agrees…so long as Valencia poses as his wife and stays out of trouble.

“To Love a Spy” is another engaging and entertaining story from Andrea Pickens. The characters have a nice interplay, particularly as their feelings for each other develop. Both characters are “older” as the genre goes and Valencia would be considered “past her prime.” One of the reasons that I like this story is that Valencia is a mature woman who is capable and crafty and respected by her community.

“To Love A Spy” is the fourth book in Andrea Pickens’ series “Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies.” Each book features a different Merlin. The stories can be read as standalones, but are better as a series. “To Love a Spy” nicely wraps up the series. This book is being re-released by Oliver Heber Books.

This story is great for readers who enjoy adventure and romance stories.

A Mission That Rekindles More Than Old Loyalties
When Lord Lynsley deems a mission too perilous for the students of Mrs. Merlin’s Academy, he takes it on himself—never expecting to be caught in a storm at sea and thrown into the path of someone from his past.
Valencia, once one of the academy’s most promising agents, vanished after a career-ending injury. Rather than accept a desk job, she disappeared from the world of espionage—until now. When fate brings her and Lynsley together again, she’s nursing him back to health and determined to rejoin the fight, even if it means risking everything once more.
Their mission sends them to Paris, where whispers of a dangerous French weapon threaten the balance of the war. For Valencia, it’s also personal—she wants revenge on the man responsible for her downfall. But Lynsley reminds her that the mission must come first. As tensions rise and danger closes in, the lines between duty and desire begin to blur.
Their hearts are as much at risk as their lives. Will they complete their mission before their enemies—or their emotions—destroy everything?
A compelling blend of danger, intrigue, and second chances, this story will appeal to readers who enjoy Regency romance with high stakes and emotional depth.

This is yet another mission for the team at Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies. This time, The Marquess of Lyndsay is going on this mission himself.

Years previously, a former pupil of the Academy, Valencia Kestrel was on an assignment with Thomas Lyndsay where she was severely injured and had to withdraw from further assignments. She has disappeared for the last ten years and has only now recently resurfaced.

Thomas poses as an American Industrialist and the ship he is travelling on is caught in a storm and torn apart. When the mission does not go according to plan, he has no choice but to seek the assistance of Valencia Kestrel, whom he has a past with. These two while great working together, are both very headstrong and argue at every turn. We see a new side to Thomas, not so much the unflappable professional this time round, more human. The chemistry between them is obvious and the stakes are high.

The entire story was nonstop action that I thoroughly enjoyed. I received an ARC from the publishers and Booksprout and submit my honest review voluntarily.

Valencia is the best operative Mrs. Merlin’s Academy has trained, but an injury during a failed mission ended her career. Lord Lynsley founded the spy academy. Since Valencia left, several other Merlins have married. When an assignment comes that Thomas, Lord Lynsley, deems too dangerous for the girls training at the academy, he takes it himself. Fate steps in, and Thomas finds himself washed ashore near the village where Valencia has settled. Now they are off to France to stop the same man who injured Valencia ten years ago. Valencia and Thomas make an awesome team in espionage, and in romance. Feelings that were not expressed before come to the surface now. This is a page turner, fast-paced and exciting. There is drama, danger, tension, revenge, and romance. The is also camaraderie, humor, and a surprise or two. From the prologue where Valencia showed she still had what it takes, I was hooked. From there it is an entertaining journey to a successful mission and a happy ending.

Thomas, Lord Lynsley, head of Mrs. Merlin's Academy of Extraordinary Young Ladies, must take on a mission for the government alone. Shipwrecked on his way to France, he is saved by Valencia, one of the best of the Merlin's ten years ago. Wounded she gave up her life as as a spy, but not her abilities she learned at the Academy. Now partners impersonating an American couple in Paris,Thomas is playing the role of a diplomat representing the American President. With Napoleon in retreat with his troops from Russia, Thomas has the opportunity to steal a formula for a new explosive. In the hands of the French, it could destroy the British navy. Valencia and Thomas play a dangerous game against the murderer, Pierre Rochambeau, who possesses the formula. A dangerous mission brings a Merlin and a spy closer than duty dictated.

Into the lion’s den or is it a jackal’s?
The ranks of the full-fledged Merlins have been depleted by … marriage.
When a new, urgent, utterly delicate mission must be undertaken, Linsley decides that he will go to Paris. After all, he is not yet so decrepit that he can’t carry out what is necessary. His travels know an inauspicious start when he is shipwrecked on the isle of Sark. To his surprise, he is rescued by Valencia, one of the first Merlins, who has settled there years ago after sustaining a severe injury. In exchange for her help, she convinces him to let her accompany him to Paris. Linsley has his doubts, but, on the other hand, he has to take on an extremely dangerous spy, who is also responsible for Valencia’s injury. They must be prepared to anything to succeed. Failure is not an option. Countless lives would be lost.

Another episode in this exciting series kept me glued to my book throughout. Finally, we see the real Lord Lynsley and his most dangerous operative. When Valencia walked away after a failed assignment, she had no intention of returning to Mrs Merlin's Academy, but when fate intervened, nothing would stand in her way of getting her revenge, despite Lord Lynsley telling her that she had to keep her personal feelings out of the mission. Together they make an exciting team, working together like a well-oiled machine, but when the dormant feelings of attraction start rising once more, their mission becomes that much more complicated. I enjoyed every moment of this book, the tension, the drama, and the romance, and am glad that Valencia could finally find peace. Quite a spy thriller, this one is! Valencia is a former spy, driven to leave because of an injury. Thomas heads the department and has grieved her loss. How he found her again was a very different scenario from anything I have read and the mission they go on is not for the faint-hearted. This is fast-paced, exciting and intense, both physically and emotionally. Watching Valencia work through her lack of self-worth and Thomas feeling his age (a bit) felt very real. They were not the “perfect” spies and it was refreshing to read. The characters were well written and believable and the climax was certainly exciting. Help from a source not anticipated was a bit of a surprise as well. I adored the last few chapters at the school , especially all the banter. Well worth the read!

This fast-paced historical spy adventure had me hooked from the first page. Lord Lynsley, the ever-mysterious head of Mrs. Merlin’s Academy for Extraordinary Young Ladies, is forced out of the shadows and back into the field when a high-stakes mission arises. The twist? He must team up with a former agent who hasn’t seen action—or him—in a decade, ever since a mission gone wrong changed everything between them.

The chemistry between the two leads crackles with unresolved tension, and the emotional stakes are as high as the political ones. Set against the backdrop of a Europe on the brink of Napoleonic dominance, the story blends danger, intrigue, and just the right touch of romance.

A good pick for fans of historical fiction with a strong feminist edge and a dash of spycraft.

Loved, loved, loved this book. I have to admit I am hooked by the word “ spy”. This Regency is part of a series, although it is the first one I have read. The premise is a Spy Academy has been established to train a group female spies called Merlins to aid in the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte.
The spymaster,a titled nobleman, Thomas Linsley and a retired Merlin, Valencia join forces on a perilous assignment. Their exploits are the stuff of a page turner.
My only complaint is that the book needs a little more careful exiting as there are a number if spelling mistakes that annoyed me while teading.

Unfortunately for me this is the first book in the series I have read. I will be changing that!!
I found the characters charismatic a retired female spy and her mentor. Tasked with entering France and stealing a valuable recipe for a new weapon from the dangerous French spy who was responsible for her retirement. Valencia seeks revenge but falls in love with her mentor Lynsey. This is truly unputdownable. I highly recommend it.

Probably needed to read the rest of the series to get a good idea of the powerful interaction between Valencia and Lyndsey. Valencia was an agent that got seriously injured by one of the french arch villains and spies. Lyndsey decides to do the mission on his own but gets shipwrecked and turns up on the beach near Valencia's bar. They go on the mission together and eventually their romance blossoms. Lovely story.

Merlins Maidens is a wonderful series, and this book, you get to see the mastermind behind the academy, Thomas Lynsley, and a former student Valencia.

Fate brings them together after 10 years, and they set out on a joint mission. The close proximity brings out some witty banter, buried feelings, and passion. This book had plenty of twists and turns and was very fast-paced.

Let's continue to have more in this series, please.

To Love Us Spy by Andrea Pickens

Valencia having been injured when she was a Merlin she quit and bought a tavern on a British isle. The Marquess of Lynsley was on his way to pair Paris when you ship ran into a storm and skunk. Valencia found him lying on the shore in bad shape. She rescued him and took him to her house. Then made a deal with him that she would go along and help him get the papers and stuff he needed from Paris. Ms. Pickens has written a good book and to find out exactly what happens you need to read it. It's a good read...

This is the first book by this author that I have read. I only read murder mystery/spy books nowadays. So when I saw Spy in the title, I thought this one was for me, but sadly, it was more romance and relationship than what suits me. There was some action, but I found it a bit slow, so I didn’t finish it. If you like historical romance with some action and suspense, I’m sure you will enjoy this. I received this as an ARC and freely give my review.

This is a superb series! Each story wraps around a series of women taught to be spies. That in itself makes it more original than the regular historical romance novels. I think I enjoyed this one the most as it brings both failures and success' to the forefront. When Valencia,.an ex spy, finds Lynsley wounded near her small residence she not only helps him but becomes embroiled in determining who is behind the attack but also has a second opportunity to replace the past with a fresh start.

Valencia's life as one of Lyndsley's Merlin's was ended when she was injured on the job. But he shouldn't have counted her out. Ten years later despite her damaged leg she has kept up her skills and after saving his life goes under cover against the man who ended her career and almost took her life. They have to play an act and attraction builds between them. But can a marquess and an orphan from the slums have a life together? This was a steamy historical romantic suspense.

This is a spy thriller with some romance. The FMC had to retire from spying 10 years previously due to an injury. The MMC is the head of the spy operation who must take on the job himself. They meet again after he is washed ashore during a storm. She wiggles her way into his mission. Their attraction blooms, but they must concentrate on their mission. The villain is one of the deadliest men. It was a story with much intrigue.

A great story of the times. She was at the pinnacle then fell. He stayed in the shadows running things until he had to take charge. Meeting her again brought up feelings they had both buried. Working together enabled them to learn more about each other and to keep each other safe against all odds.

Valencia…

Was young and impetuous and was injured in a botched mission.
She’s called back into action by Lynsley ten years later, as they work to stop a weapon in the war against the French.
Action and spying.
