I used to believe life was exactly what I saw every day—that humans were alone on this planet.
I was wrong.
On the eve of my fortieth birthday, I get a letter from my Gran explaining that all of those fictional beings from stories? Yeah, they’re real. Oh, and apparently, I’m about to be hit with a megawatt surge of magic that could do anything from sending me back in time to flinging me across the planet.
Instead, I wake up as a raven. A literal raven.
Understandably upset, I follow an inner, pulsing radar to a man in the mountains, desperately hoping he can help change me back.
But Alaric isn’t just a man. He’s one of the last dragon shifters in the world. He’s my mate. And he’s about to become the next king.
My Moonhaven World Romance series is connected to my Moonhaven Cove series, but expands the world with a wider geographical scope. In these stories, you’ll find clean, swoony romance, snappy banter, laugh-out-loud moments, kisses that make you melt, and characters you’ll want to cheer for—again and again.
While Sanctuary with a Dragon begins a new romance arc, it also features beloved characters from the Bear Shifter Clan introduced in Bearly Yours (Book Three in the Moonhaven Cove series). For the best reading experience, please be sure to read Bearly Yours first.
She has two wonderful adult children and lives in a sleepy little town in California. She started writing at five years old, and hasn’t wanted to stop since. She’s lived here, there, and everywhere, but mostly she’s lived within the pages of a good book. At any moment, she expects a dragon to come and choose her as their rider.
Wow this was just so good. both characters were so unique and actually talked about their feelings. This was so well written, truly a breath of fresh air
good story, lots of open ends. maybe start of a new series?
I have been devouring Dusty Rose’s books since I discovered her. She is a clean and I would say gentle writer- meaning she doesn’t make someone you love into a villain. So far. There are villains. And they are powerful and bad. And you think they are going to win. But you get a sweet HEA. My first D.R. Book I spent nearly the entire book “looking over my shoulder”- suspecting every character introduced. I was relieved that the villain was none of them. So,good drama. Nice plot. Gentle to the reader. I love how she circulates previous MCs into the books. With each book I realize She is building a pretty complex world. For the most part I end each book with a sigh and a smile (and immediately re-read the book- some more than others. But yes, so far all Of them. But not this one, at least not right now). This book was frustrating for me. First: It was like the world she is building exploded. We got bits and pieces of brand new things strewn throughout. Several moments where we are left hanging. -I do know Briggs has his own book, so he gets a sort of complete story- it kinda just starts minus the first act…which is actually here. In this book. I really hate when an author repeats themselves ad nauseum but some repetition is good…especially when part of the story (a pivotal part!) is only found in a separate book. (Important to mention that other book isn’t even in the series it’s especially confusing.) I do like this book. I think I will like it better when she publishes all the stories she began in this book. (Draven and Mia get a solid cameo that could have been an epilogue in their story. Except the FMC here is kinda pivotal. Hmmm) The FMC asks questions a lot. There is a ton of explaining that is relevant to the world building. And one thread that I felt was annoying. Maybe it is cool to see how the author resolves it in her mind, but, to me it kind of pushed open a door that caused the reader to really feel the injury she was causing. (Oh. Maybe that was the point.) side track here: I get (and appreciate) the representation of chronic illnesses that doctors can’t (or just don’t care to truly believe/treat). I want to believe she was suffering from the same wasting disease he was (caused by their separation) - it would be a cool explanation. It never says it. It is said that she will heal as her DNA accepts the shifter gene. It’s honestly like the author herself really didn’t know or understand. A bit disappointing.
Now for a spoiler -SPOILER ALERT- You have been warned.. the MMC and his dragon actually separate in the story. The FMC separates them. Repeatedly. And each time Cutting away more of the MMC. He honestly becomes a tad irrelevant. It was confusing and, honestly, painful to watch Aleric (spelling?) be purposely excluded. (Not just overlooked. Actively excluded). Over and over. Wasn’t he the one we were supposed to be rooting for? (Not so surprising spoiler- she ends up with Aleric in the end) Aleric is almost immediately shoved aside. We get a bit of him at the beginning of the story We are told he moved to the mountain to die. He is growing weaker and has lost the ability to shift as well as communication with his dragon. He has gone years like this and has accepted his impending death. Then she comes along. .. And he begins to heal…but to be unable to communicate with your dragon (half of his soul for over 1000 years) and finally start to get it back only to have it leave you completely. Seriously. To take long walks, have in-depth conversations, and adventures WITHOUT him. To have both your dragon AND the FMC (aka your love interest) outright say “oh, you can’t come”. It is cruel.
The romance happened emotionally between her and the dragon, completely without the MMC. They were literally two separate characters.
Ok- so this could go somewhere. But it doesn’t. We only see Aleric when he is with the FMC. No inside info on him and how he is dealing with the complete (and completely unfathomable) separation. Meanwhile the dragon- who can communicate with her from the beginning while the MMC cannot. She is a bird for a good chunk of the story. A bird the dragon CAN talk to/with. The dragon can pass the communication along to the MMC after he regains the ability to talk with his dragon. Very little is the actual MMC and FMC. Oh, Aleric gets jealous. for a hot second. Literally maybe two paragraphs. then it resolves as if it were nothing. Honestly, I can manage the cliff hanger tidbits throughout the story. I am familiar enough with this author to even expect it (although this book has more than usual). But to do something so cruel to the MMC? literally shoving him aside, then gloss over it like it was nothing. Then the HEA (which adds yet another cliff hanger of another story) with the completely undamaged MMC and the FMC. I am sorry, but I am absolutely sure I missed a huge something.
There were parts I adored...mostly the magic and world building that is continuing...also all the character cameos.
There were parts I didn't love...they talk about wanting to fall in love, but nothing really happened for them to fall in love...honestly not much really happened at all... I love a good comfort read, and sometimes that means boring...this felt a little boring...
There were some issues...in the beginning Everly finds out she is going to enter the magical world on her birthday because of a spell on the matriarchal line in her family.... except Everly Winters shouldn't have that last name if she was the great great great great great great etc granddaughter of a woman last name Winters when this magic helped some of these women find their loves.
This is a low stress, fun and cute, urban fantasy romance. There’s not a lot of action and the plot is a bit disjointed and meandering, but it’s an entertaining read and I enjoyed it.
The FMC suffers from multiple chronic illnesses, and I think it’s handled well by the author. There is a heavy focus on belonging and self-worth, and the plot is mostly tied up in the relationship/romance. There’s also a note of humor throughout the book and it helped keep everything lighthearted and fun.
Recommended if you’re looking for some light entertainment and don’t mind a little cheese.
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to a few lightly descriptive kisses. There is quite a bit of magic. There is no real message of faith or God.
Trigger warnings - chronic illness, pain, depression, and anxiety
Super cute. Also somewhat scattered. Alaric is very much a Gary Stu but he's so heartbreakingly sweet that it's forgivable. Everly is almost Mary Sue. She's pretty perfect although she does have a chronic illness that makes her very relatable to me at least. However instead of fixing on their relationship and her own redemption feeling like a useless invalid, instead she gets dream magic and with it finds a dude a mate, rescues a dragon, and saves a baby. None of which have any impact whatsoever on the plot of the book. The dude that needed the mate and the baby aren't seen again in the book. The dragon she drags back to life leaves as soon as it wakes up. What was the point in including them at all? I guess for later novels but it felt unnecessary and unfinished.
Great book, loved how awesome Elandor/Alaric (and such cool names btw!!) are!!! His gentleness with Everly is just tooo sweet!!!!! Loved also how he was just very honest with her about everything for the most part and kept being patient with her!!! On a side note: Could we please contemplate writing a story for Shay though?? Can that be a possibility??!! Who doesn’t love Shay?
3.5 stars*** I enjoyed this book! felt like a quick read and not really any villainous characters honestly. Just a mated couple that are trying to figure it all out together. I will say I did read the previous series because it was in the blurb but honestly you don't have to. It was nice to see and it will probably be more enjoyable to see characters from the previous series and you appreciate their appearances. Good reading to pass the time!
I have been waiting for this book for so long and it did not disappoint! I absolutely love all of Dusty Rose's novels as they are so heartwarming, the world-building is wonderful, and the characters are simply perfect with flaws as well as hopes and dreams. This book was so nice to read and I loved seeing all the other characters from Dusty Rose's Moonhaven Cove Series. I 100% recommend!!!
This was a fun easy read with mature kind main character. This book was a romance between and dragon and a human woman who discovers she was is a shapeshifter on her 40th birthday. The romance was the main thrust of the book with our diving into spicy scenes. Definitely worth a read.
By far, I think this is my favorite of her series. I love how the author handles chronic illness and mental health while staying true to the fantasy world she has built and keeping the story interesting. Even my Fav likes it, which is a win in my book. A good read.
I'm glad I found this author. Clean behind closed door romantasy. I am enjoying the world growth as I read through the Moonhaven series, and the Moonhaven World books. Each of these books can be read alone, however, characters appear across books, so I try to read them in order.
This story was probably the most unique in the Moonhaven series. While I wish there was a lot more action and adventure, I also enjoyed the unique storyline and the different paths it took. I never quite knew what to expect. There didn't seem to be much of a climax to the plot though, which (while still satisfying) made the ending different.
If I could move into a book’s world, this would be it - or at least in my top 10. I love the characters, all of them - not only the main ones. Funny, heartwarming, romantic at its core. Dusty Rose is wonderful. I have read all her books and can’t wait for the next!
Lovely story with main characters also dealing with real illnesses that don’t magically disappear. Looking forward to new stories by new characters introduced.
I always love the cameos we get from Draven and Mia. As someone with a chronic illness, I really loved the representation and the appreciation that was given to how that wears on a person and their desire to be loved. So great overall!
So as someone with multiple chronic illnesses, it is incredible to see character, characters who deal with some of the same things. I love the story and can’t wait for the next one.
This is a warm and beautiful story with great characters and an excellent storyline. I really enjoy reading Dusty Rose’s stories. I have read all of them and look forward to reading more.
This adventure touches so many parts of the soul. We all struggle with the “aloneness “ of life but this story brings clarity and hope along with a great read. Hope Dusty Rose shares more of her talents like this one.
The story captured my interest immediately with its original story line. I figured it would be the typical cookie cutter romance but it was not. Real characters well developed. An interesting fantasy world that’s unique. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Disability rep. Sweet story. I love that the fmc is 40yo. I love that Dusty Roses females are all upper 20's+. I love that, in spite being mates, they had to work on their relationship and build trust.
I loved this story. It was hard to meet the MFC before her birthday when life was knocking her around. She has an autoimmune disorder and finds out there is nothing that can be done. She is turning 40 and life does not seem to have any silver linnigs. Then she recieves the letter from her Gran telling her to get ready something magical is going to happen to her. Waking up as a Raven was no where in her wildest imagining! That starts her quest which leads her to the last dragon and her mate. This story was engaging and fun. I loved these characters and could not get enough of them. Swoony and so satisfying.
Loved the realism of ongoing medical issues. Need more information on the dragon! Bonus chapter? Next book? Something! Really enjoying Moonhaven expanding.
