Sigh, my review got eaten by both my writing app and Goodreads. But, in summary, a couple of good bugs happen and then the story removes all the bugs for its climax, which has the unfortunate effect of illustrating how utterly pedestrian the manga feels without them.
For a single chapter it would be okay, but for a multi-part series finale it absolutely robs the story of its wonder. Which is the point, yet it ultimately just makes the finale boring while sort of tempting Kon and Kasane with normal lives.
The series was best when Nio Nakatani was being wildly creative; the chapters about taste and the one about the rooms all changing decor randomly were really fun. Some of the bugs here are so middling that it shows that underneath that creativity there isn’t much of a story.
I did appreciate the way it implies Hono is starting to be more than a little interested in Kon. They’re a very fun duo and her antics liven up an otherwise predictable chapter where people end up shrinking. That was my favorite part of the denouement.

GOD BLESS THE MISTAKEN v4 takes a few steps back before taking any meaningful steps forward. The current volume of the manga is also the final volume, which, regrettably engenders a handful of episodes that are both whimsical and anticlimactic.
Kon again ponders the weight of keeping his origin a secret from his best friends. Maruko worries about losing her independence in a city that demands high amounts of social contact. And Kasane ruminates on her place in a world through a substantial what-if (e.g., If there were no bugs, would she feel even more out of place?).
The pacing and quality of each chapter is fairly solid; however, the overall narrative health of GOD BLESS THE MISTAKEN v4 is weak, relative to previous volumes. For example, when the house conspires to convince Kasane to adopt a kitten, and readers learn that Kasane harbors anxiety over her caretaker skills, the stakes feel artificially inflated. Kasane cares for Kon and the others reasonably well. Would her inability to care for a cat truly speak of her inability to fulfill other domestic responsibilities? Not likely.
The presence of bugs takes a backseat insofar as they don't drive much of the story. The most interesting case is a meta-bug: A bug emerges that affects human memory (of other bugs), and Kon is struck with the erstwhile dilemma of needing to remind people that bugs exist (and thereby reminding himself that he, too, only pseudo exists). But it's not as existential a crisis as the manga makes it out to be. Kon is an overthinking preteen. He doesn't actually have to push and pull and ponder as much as he does to figure things out with Kasane, it's merely his instinct to do so. Unspoken, in the end, is the awkward reality that little would change if Kon did nothing (and that by taking action, he is, presumably, shaping the world into something more comfortable).
GOD BLESS THE MISTAKEN v4 is an okay volume, on the whole, to close out a fun and clever manga series. Longtime manga enthusiasts can rightly classify this as another warm case of a young male protagonist, shepherded by a competent (older) female character whose kindness and affection may do equal bouts of good and bad over the long arc of the young man's life — however little of it readers may eventually witness.

Even so, I like the world that made me.Brief by manga standards, God Bless the Mistaken ends at four volumes. From the beginning, it's felt like one of those things that could amble around in a cozy, inventive, sometimes mildly affecting way indefinitely. I don't mind that it stopped here, and also wouldn't have minded if it went on for a little while longer.
I'm sure there are a number of ways the ending can be interpreted; my take is that both one's perceptions, and one's actions can change "what the world is like." That isn't naïve optimism --anyone who knows me well, knows that I'm not like that. It's how the world works, both individually and collectively.
Having now finished both Bloom into You and this series, I'm looking forward to seeing what Nakatani is up to next.

2/26 I wondered why the star rating dropped dramatically for the final volume, and now I know. This was such an interesting slice-of-life story with a unique twist and great characters , but instead of leaning into all the potential and expanding the world it was cut short in a rather anticlimactic way without even touching on the mystery of it all. Alas the author did not have the same curiosity we readers did. Still, I would recommend it to those who enjoy magical realism with their slice-of-life stories.

Fun wrap-up to the series; some final revelations, some good emotional moments, finished out before it got too thin on ideas. Will look forward to seeing what Nakatani Nio does next.

I’m sad to say that I think this series ended on a bit of wood for me. I enjoyed the episodic nature, but I feel that the ending just didn’t hold up to the rest of the series. It felt like it lost its place, though it did its best to bring it back. It didn’t play into its own strength.
On the whole, I think this was a fun, short little series that I’m glad that I read. The episodic style made it fun and easy to pop in and out of. The final volume just needed a little more oomph.
