She will fight for her sister’s happiness, but is she strong enough to claim her own?
One snowy Christmas Eve, Jasmine creates a magical night for her disappointed younger sister. Unsupervised by their strict parents, their escapades lead them to an unlikely new friend. But, time is against them and the magic of childhood is soon overrun by societal duties and parental expectations.
Poppy, vivacious and headstrong, makes her own life decisions. But her heart aches as she watches her older sister wilt at home.
Can Jasmine fight through her own world of loneliness to recreate the community and warmth of that magical Christmas Eve all those years ago?
This book is a part of The Christmas Chronicles, a collection of festive novellas filled with clean romance, chilly weather, and cozy adventures.
Emily Deady was as an avid reader who hated writing. But one day she realized that most authors loved cats and tea, her two favorite things. So, she stopped fighting the inevitable and she began to write. She loves a good romance, her real life hero who patiently listens to all her plotlines, and hitting the trails for light hike in sunny San Diego.
This was very different than my normal fairytale retelling! I wasn’t quite sure the setting for this book? It felt historical/regency, but not fairytale historical like kings and queens. The inventions almost reminded me of a steampunk-like concept, but I don’t think it was meant to be. They talked about magic some but it wasn’t until the very end that I realized they were serious about the magic—that their prior mentions of magic wasn’t just using the word for a whimsical thing—and that someone was using magic harvested by stars. ? Not quite sure I understood everything about that as it’s a shorter book, so it felt a wee bit rushed with the explanations. I did liked how this one was set on Christmas Eve!
Main Content- Magic is in this world, particularly from starlight which can be harvested and is only accessible by night; *Spoilers* ; Mentions of magic and possibly being cursed/curses; A mention of a constellation of the three-headed dog.
No major language besides a mention of Barrett swearing (not written); Some eye rolling.
At the beginning, we get the impression that Jasmine’s mother doesn’t care for spending time with her and her sister much and they long for her (at the very end, we see a hope of change in her listening to them); In the first chapter, a young Jasmine feels a “shimmer of joy” of doing something her parents would disapprove of; An older Jasmine acts like she’s sick to get out of a party and later sneaks out of the house.
Mentions of a fire, major damage, illegal business dealings, crimes/criminals, & arrests; Mentions of pain, injuries; Mentions of bully-backs and threats; Mentions of alcohol, drinking, & a poisonous drink; A few mentions of jealousy; A couple mentions of break-ins; A couple mentions of a possible arsonist; A couple mentions of debtor’s prison.
1 kiss lasting a sentence, 1 kiss lasting around 5-7 sentences; Touches, Embraces, Hand holding, Warmth, & Nearness (up to a few sentences); Noticing & Blushes (barely-above-not-detailed); Mentions of a kiss & kissing.
Actual rating: 4.5 It took me a little while to read this, but I did really enjoy it! At first I wasn’t really sure if it was my thing, but the tension and suspense picked up, and I was invested! I grew to love the main couple, and got so excited for their romance and story. I really really did enjoy the plot and all of the subplots, and this was such a cozy story.
This book!!!! Snow White and Rose Red is one of my favorite fairytales, and this retelling did a great job. Set in a magical world with 19th century England, Sherlock Holmes-esque vibes, the original dynamics of the story play out in a manner that includes Christmas balls, proposals, and daring adventures to solve a crime.
I absolutely adored Barrett and Jasmine!!! They made a great detective team. Their sleuthing hijinks were hilarious, and I couldn't stop turning pages to find out what happened. The ending was so sweet with strong family morals and a beautiful happily ever after.
– this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Jasmine’s point of view
Review:
I enjoyed this novella! It’s my first book by Emily Deady and I’m interested in reading more from her! I liked the mix of historical-esqueness & magical feel to this world. I loved the friendship between Jasmine & Poppy and getting to see it both in the past and now. I loved Jasmine’s father and how he was a little unexpected. I also liked the tension between Jasmine and her mysterious friend when they met again for the first time in awhile!
Summary:
Jasmine loved her holiday traditions with her sister when they were young, but she especially cherishes the one time they made a friend and had him join in.
Now both girls are older and Jasmine watches her sister enjoy the holidays with her new & loving husband while wondering if she’ll ever find someone that makes her feel like her sister does. When dire circumstances bring their old friend back to the area and into Jasmine’s life, Jasmine finds herself taking an adventure like the ones she used to. Maybe she truly can have a life filled with the same joy that filled her childhood…
Jasmine would do anything for the people she loved. Even sacricd her happines. But when her Christmas Eve takes an unexpected turn, she bumps into the one person she has thought of every day for the last seven years.
It's up to them to save their siblings, stop an evil plot and break a curse. Can they do it and somehow save their happiness too?
The Lonley Night by @emilydeady infuses strong sisterly bonds, childhood friendships, and a determined FMC who discovers love under the stars.
This is the last book in the seven book Multi Author Series of Standalone Christmas Fairytales and nods to Snow White and Rose Red. It's a sweet, touching story that perfectly wraps up this delightful series.
I was so glad to see this author writing again and hope we will see many more of her stories in the days ahead.
Grab a cup of cocoa and settle in for yet another wintry treat!
4.5 stars. Absolutely precious and not long enough. Jasmine is smart and brave, Bear is willing to listen to her ideas and not shit all over them just because she's not a man.
Enchanting mix of Christmas and astronomy, but confusing plot
The descriptions of Christmas Eve and the ball were beautiful. I loved the inventions at the world’s fair, too. Deady always excels at worldbuilding. However, this time, the plot just didn’t work for me. The book’s description caught my interest, but I was surprised at how much more focus Jasmine had than Poppy. I was also confused at where the loneliness aspect really came into play. There were less elements from the book’s stated inspirational source of Snow White and Rose Red than I expected.
I’m confused at the rapid investigation, romance, and characters. The idea of illegal activity caught my interest, but the magical explanations in the resolution felt too far-fetched for me to believe, even in a fantasy story that has hints of steampunk. Honestly, it was probably the shorter length of this book that caused problems. The earlier chapters were perfect in the setup of the conflict and are what ultimately made me want to invest in the characters’ story. I feel like there just wasn’t enough time to fully establish the characters and the mystery plot and the romance. The main characters have potential, but I feel like we barely got to know Poppy as an adult, and Barrett only had one night to reacquaint himself with Jasmine.
2.5 stars rounded to 3. The first three chapters were my favorite. Despite The Lonely Eve not working for me, I still adore Deady’s other works and will happily pick up anything she writes in the future. I found myself more curious about Poppy and Edward’s story as the book progressed, so I would happily read a book on them. And, just because I didn’t understand this book, doesn’t mean others won’t enjoy it. The high praise other reviewers gave it is what made me excited to give it a try, so perhaps this book may be just right for your next quick Christmas Eve read!
The final story in the Christmas Chronicles is here! I have loved this series and this was such a lovely ending to it! Ms. Deady’s books are so good and I was so excited to read this one in particular! It was a magical Victorian inspired adventure! Jasmine was so lovely. She felt very real and I loved her relationship with her sister. I admired her grace, even as she sought to make her own decisions, she tried to think things through and be respectful of her family. It was so sweet to see her reconnect with her friend and the adventure it brought her too! She was so courageous as she searched for the truth. Poppy was so vibrant! They complemented each other well. I loved the magical world that this book created! The stars theme was so beautiful and felt very Christmas inspired! The setting felt very cozy and reminiscent of classic Christmas stories. I also really enjoyed the fairytale inspiration. It is not as common of a retelling, at least that I have read, so it was fun to see the story aspects woven into it. This is a fairytale inspired holiday romance with magical elements. It has only kissing. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
This book was a fast read for me, but one I didn't want to stop reading. I was sucked in from the beginning and sighed at the end. This story definitely is more romance than fantasy for probably 50% of the book but when Deady introduces magic, she makes magic a BIG part of the story, which was great! Honestly, this whole multi-author series has been amazing and you cannot go wrong with any of them for your holiday reading. This story had a bit of lost/second chance love that was fun, while also seeing the younger sister thrive as a newlywed, which I really enjoyed those aspects. I also thought Jasmine and Garrett were both a perfect mix of quirky and awesome, which helped me relate to them more easily. I will definitely be reading more of Deady's books in the future after this introduction to her books!
This felt like the Die Hard of Christmas novellas. It has all the love, family, and Christmas you want. But it also has action, adventure, and a memorable villain.
Highlights: Stargazing on the hill ✨ Jasmine trying to be sneaky is endearing Barrett helping with Jasmine’s shoes is so sweet!
I love Jasmine for her clever and inquisitive mind. I love her compassion and desire to help those in need.
I love Barrett for his steadfastness and desire to do what is right. I love his sacrificial love for those he cares about.
“‘I am not going to forget you, even if you forget me. I like this feeling between us.’ She leaned back to see his whole face. ‘When this is all over, even if you forget, I promise I will tell you everything. I will make you remember.’”
I love Emily Deady's books, and this one is no exception. It's been a while since I read any of them because there is simply to many books in the world and too few hours in which to read all of the interesting ones nevermind rereading previous books, although the prospect is currently most enticing to reread her Fairytale retelling series.
I like how Emily brings magic into her stories in a way that it is very much a part of the story, but the story works quite well even if you try to take the magic out of it. I think that is because I can't always tell where the magic is or where it is coming from, until it gets revealed in the story and then it makes sense and becomes almost painfully obvious where it was in the rest of the story. So the story makes sense even when the element of magic seems to be missing or very well hidden.
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and original Christmas story! I especially liked the stargazing elements and it felt like I was looking at the stars with the characters. And the way the stars were used as magic was most intriguing! I loved the villains in this story, especially Ivran who was overbearing, pompous and delightfully evil! All the characters were great and it was wonderful to read of the sisterly bond between Jasmine and Poppy and the way they cared for one another. Jasmine’s bravery was admirable and I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between her and Barrett, especially when they were indulging in subterfuge and the adventure elements in this book were fantastic. All in all, it was a sweet clean intriguing fairytale retelling and a perfect climax to the inimitable Christmas Chronicles. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Emily’s work in the future
I very much enjoyed this book by Emily Deady, and I thought this was a great comeback for her since she's been not writing for a while! This is the last standalone novel in the Christmas Chronicles Series, and it's as fantastic as the first 6. Jasmine is a strong character who will sacrifice everything, including her own future happiness for those she loves. Barrett is a man with a secret that could be the end of him, who is willing to risk it all to save his family. Together, these two have what it takes to save their siblings. A sweet, quick read that will surely get you in the Christmas spirit with strong themes of family, loyalty, and the worst proposal ever! Definitely add this one to your TBR today!! ☺️
“You may not always see me, but I will not take my eyes off of you”
The Lonely Eve by Emily Deady is a cute re-telling of Snow White and Rose Red. Jasmine is a strong, vibrant character whose love for her family runs strong. She is not afraid to fight for the truth, and along the way, meets an ally in Barrett who is strong enough to fight for her! This is a quick read if you are looking for something with a little magic, humor, and touching moments to brighten your holiday and leave you with a smile!
Things to love: Sister Bond Playing sick The cloakroom at the ball Getting the keys “She was good at this” Her subterfuge antics His devotion to her
This is my first book to read by this author, and I enjoyed the writing style – I will be looking for more from her!
The Lonely Eve by Emily Deady What I enjoyed about this book: 🌲Magic from the stars 🌲 A heroine with duties to fulfill 🌲 A magical night from her childhood 🌲 Two sisters, Jasmine and Poppy 🌲 Sweet and swoony romance, just kisses A very inventive retelling of Snow White and Rose Red! I really enjoyed how the original elements were kept and yet we ended up with a whole new story. I also loved the star magic. I did feel it was a tiny bit rushed at the end, I wanted a little more of an explanation. Part of the Christmas Chronicles, standalone Favorite scene: Watching the comet Favorite character: Barrett (our main male character)
I'm a bit torn on how to describe this one. The seasonal vibes were great. The main characters were alright in terms of likeability. The writing was decently paced. The plot seemed to curve off to crazy town with characters behaving oddly. The romance was almost non-existent as the leads literally have only spent two evenings together, seven years apart. But, again, there were nice seasonal (and Victorian era) vibes that created a warm and pleasant reading environment throughout the very unexpected journey. So. 2.5-3*?
Emily Deady always writes such lovely stories, although I admit I wish this one was longer and she told more stories in this world. I loved Jasmine and Poppy. And their whole family, though suspect in places, were quite wonderful. Also, although the love story was obvious from the first chapter, it was fun to watch it unfold in unexpected ways. I can't wait to read whatever Emily writes next.
I received an ARC from the author and have reviewed it freely because I quite liked it.
This Snow White and Rose Red retelling is cute. It’s a low fantasy story with some gaslamp-ish vibes, but more than anything it’s cozy despite some pretty high stakes. I liked Jasmine’s character and the antagonist was twisted into an interesting take of the dwarf from the original fairytale. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there had been some character growth. As it is, it’s a “good enough” story with a nice Christmas setting, but not much more.
I loved this story and it was well written, but I do not feel like my expectation based on the blurb was what I got. I never saw Poppy's POV, and I never felt like Jasmine's night was lonely. It was other things though! It was intriguing, full of adventure, risk-taking, hope, romance, and family loyalty. The story had a mystery-solving vibe to it. I liked Jasmine's tenacity and courage.
This was a very great read and such an interesting take on Snow White and Rose Red! Such a sweet, clean romance and great plot. My only issue with the novel was how short it was: the plot wasn't elaborate enough and the relationships weren't pursued further. Otherwise, this was an incredible read. Great job Emily Deady!
This was a wondrous little book to read! It had magical Christmas Eves, sisterly love, a mysterious curse, the magic of starlight, and a second chance at love with a dear friend. I loved the mix of astronomy and magic and mystery with the retelling of the Snow-White and Rose Red fairytale!
A suspenseful Christmas mystery filled with nostalgic Christmas memories and maybe the spark of new love. Engaging characters with a lot of personality, witty banter, beautiful descriptions, and strong sibling bonds all add to the enjoyment of this Christmasy take on the tale of Snow White and Rose Red. This clean romance is an engaging way to spend an afternoon in the countdown to Christmas.
There was a big jump between chapters 14 and 15, there is definitely at least one chapter missing that would have built up some of the tension and emotion. As it stands, the jump in plot is a bit disorienting and leaves some of the romantic payoffs falling extra flat.
I really enjoyed this book! The quick pace left me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The characters were sweet and were perfect for the retelling. My only wish was that it was a little longer with a little more character development. Overall, though I did love it!
This story was just amazing. The characters were well developed and well written. The touch of magic and the mystery just grabbed my attention from the beginning. Barrett and Jasmine were meant to be together all along.
I happily read the new book from Emily Deady; it was nice to have a new story from one of my favorite authors. It is a sweet story that is well written. I enjoyed the characters and the setting.
I really loved this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! I had a hard time putting this really wonderful book down! I absolutely loved this retelling of Snow White and Rose Red! All of the authors did a really wonderful job with their books in this really wonderful series!
What a stunning retelling of Snow White and Rose Red! Clean and uplifting, it has all of the elements of the original fairytale with a unique look. I read it in one sitting and still want more! I especially loved how supportive the main character and her family were to each other!
A short, but quick and easy read! This was a very nice Snow White and Rose Red retelling to read around December! Jasmine and Barrett were such a lovely pair in it and I would definitely recommend this novella for sure!
I'm not as familiar with the Snow White and Rose Red story so I probably missed some of the recognition clues. I loved it though. Emily has a way of writing that I really enjoy. I have loved all that I have read from her so far.
