Head of The Baptist is a captivating anthology of ten stories, each introduced by a poignant poem. The collection opens with an edifice whitewashed with secrets, setting the tone for deeply insightful explorations of human relationships. The story Higher Calling, prefaced by the titular poem Head of The Baptist, explores a father’s unyielding quest for power and status. Afenfia’s style draws readers into a world where themes of love, betrayal, politics, longing, and loneliness are intricately woven against the rich landscapes of Nigeria and Canada. This collection offers a profound journey through the complexities of human relationships and the impact of a nation’s history on its people, both at home and abroad. Afenfia leaves readers with a profound sense of having been on a journey.
Michael Afenfia’s conspiratorial writing style masterfully weaves Nigerian history and realities into his storytelling. His stories and poems reveal the consequences of blind adherence to tradition, authority, and familial hierarchy. A remarkable collection. – Dolapo Marinho, author of Smoke and Ashes.
Afenfia masterfully blends past and present, crafting intricate tales of loss, hope, faith, love, morality, purpose, self-perception, and authenticity. His writing is bold and thought-provoking, offering readers deep reflections on human nature and society. – Shehu Zock-Sock, author of Heavy.
One thing Michael Afenfia’s writing always does for me is make me laugh. He’s effortlessly hilarious and knows how to create characters who consistently make bad decisions, yet you still find yourself rooting for them. This collection of short stories had me hooked; I couldn’t stop flipping the pages. Even the poems were interesting (and I’m not even a poetry kind of reader!).
My favorites from the collection: • Three Shirts, Two Bibles and a Wedding Ring • Sweet Like Fanta • Freddie Mercury • When Two People Know • Poetry • Higher Calling
Highly recommend if you enjoy short stories that are easy to read and full of humor and heart.
