It's definitely a "peruse" book, and with all the ads for psychics, astrology, and quack medicine, it hardly qualifies as useful information. There are some good recipes, some useful tips for the gardener and so on, and even some funny stories and jokes. And a few interesting stories about families still farming in the modern age. But ultimately, I flipped through the book in a few hours to pick out what might be useful to me. I bought it since they recently said it was their last edition, and now I sorta see why. If I need to know when the sun is rising or setting, what the weather might be, and so on... I think I'll just Google it. Thanks for being a part of a developing USA, but your books have lost their necessity long ago, I imagine.

I don't think I ever actually read last year's copy, but I did read this year's. I already messed up this year's first batch of chicks. Apparently they were supposed to be born during the waxing or full moon. Instead they're hatching out during the waning moon, ugh. I was excited to see a chart of astrological events for the year! We live out in the middle of nowhere with zero light pollution and an excellent view of the night sky. The kids are always excited to stay up a little late and watch the stars. There are so many helpful tools for breeding livestock and growing food. I'm sure I'll be using this to plan out my farming this year. Seed starting and turkey hatching next!

I’m going to call this ‘finished’ even though I will reference it throughout the rest of the year. I don’t think I’ve ever closely examined an almanac before and it was recommended in a podcast I watch. I was fascinated by the vintage style ads, articles and little factoids, as well as the calendars listing relevant dates. There are recipes and riddles too. This edition, they have an article entitled “Sewing Patriotism” about Mary Pickersgill in honor of the United States of America’s 250th anniversary. This will surely be a fun reference book for the year and one to share tidbits with family and friends.

I was really disappointed by this. I was looking forward to seeing some gardening history, tips & tricks, a proper planting calendar. And I got a little bit of that but it was mostly ads, astrology, and dad jokes. I suppose my expectations were a little off as it’s been pitched to me as a guide to perfecting your farming timeline and that’s just simply not what it is.

This is a great book that is often imitated but never equaled in which is American icon that instills in readers a feeling of being connected to history of North America and its people.
