Corrupted Tides is a debut novel by S.M. Campbell. He really hit it out of the park. It’s an ocean punk fantasy set in a watery world where many monsters of the sea (human and non-human) can get you. I love the world building. I could picture myself in the action along with the rising ocean and the many levels of society as you go down plank by plank. There is a couple spicy chapters that can get you a little hot under the collar. The author is printing the spicy version but also a less spicy version if that isn’t your cup of tea. My favorite characters were Narrio, a thief who is recruited to work with cult-like forces that want to overturn the current power base and the gods. I also like Vila, a Blue Lady, or should I say a prostitute that you would want to have on your side if a fight breaks out. She is a killing machine. Things aren’t looking that great towards the end but don’t worry, my money are on the rebel fighters as the author takes us on this epic journey over seven books. I really fell in love with this world and the people in it. I am ready for more.

I want to thank the author, S.M. Campbell for a free electronic copy of his debut novel. The views and opinions expressed above are my own and are voluntarily given.

I wish I could mark this as a 4.5, but alas, I have to settle for a 4 on here.

Firstly, the FMC Vila is super cool and interesting. She is a Blue Lady(escort) by trade though it was more of a forced into it situation than by choice. She passes her time getting into fights for money (cause why not?) and helping her friend Rance. Her back story and her upbringing are a typical high class man gets lower class woman pregnant, then leaves. There’s more to it than that, but I’ll leave you to find out by reading. :)

Next, the MMC Narrio is introduced as a thief who was then tasked by a mysterious group of people to find a magic stone. He takes the job reluctantly, for a nice sum of cash, and gets to work. The problem is the stone is sealed in a church and he has to find his way into the single entrance building, with the help of Renalia, a tough lady with an eyepatch, that was also contracted by the mysterious group. Their relationship is interesting and I hope more is explored in the next book.

The dual pov made the story move along at a good pace. I never felt like I was sitting in a scene too long, with one character or another. The world building and descriptions of the people made the world feel real. The magic system is very interesting and unique based on my experiences with the books I’ve read.

My favorite characters are definitely the Wardens. They have blessed stones embedded into their bodies, which provide different abilities. Most of them so far have to do with being in the water. They are badass and can do some damage. Their weapons are reminiscent of Bloodborne and other Souls-like games.

I can’t mark this a 5/5 at this time because it’s the debut novel, and I can’t have Mr. Campbell getting a big head thinking he’s all cool and stuff. Jk! The 4.5 is mostly because I feel like a small part of me wanted more action in the water. This book took place mostly in the city called The Planks which is a floating city of old ships and other things plastered together. Just my little thing and does not take anything at all from the story and how the author put all of this together.

Great work Cap’n 🫡 Can’t wait for the next one!

This is the kind of fantasy book that makes me rethink my dislike for the genre. This is such a refreshing take on the fantasy genre. In the way that it’s not overwhelming with a magic system or world building. Easy to follow and the story progression was a highlight for me. The humor, the action, the spice of it are only some of the elements that made this story such a fun read. The main characters Vila & Narrio are so well fleshed out and likeable that you can’t help but get hooked on their journey. Highly recommend this for readers who want to get into the fantasy genre.

Corrupted Tides is a wonderfully terrifying world. It’s filled with monsters and the deepest, darkest depths of its work. I fell in love with this debut novel by SM Campbell from the moment I read the first chapter. The world building is so vast and intricate that I could find myself placed in the world. The way Campbell describes the scenes throughout the novel gave me a feeling of all five senses in the world. I could smell the spray of the sea and felt like the mist of the deep, dark waters sprayed my face. Every new twist and turn of this novel left me breathless, but thanks to Campbell’s intricacies I was able to find ways to breathe again.

I am the biggest fan of female main characters. Vila, a Blue Lady, which in this world is a very *very* a highly regarded prostitute is exactly that. She is a badass who knows how to get out of scraps and the worst of fates. I adore her strong will and ability to use every asset to her advantage.

I am usually not a fan of dual POVs but I will happily bounce back between Vila and our male main character Narrio. Narrio is an extremely skilled thief that found himself in hot water (or should I say Eldritch Depths). His excellence in his craft leads him to having to find a way to complete a task by, what I can only call, a cult.

If you’re looking for an exciting, epic adventure SM Campbell provides just that with Corrupted Tides. Campbell is also releasing a clean version for those who do not want to partake in explicit content. Corrupted Tides will continue over 7 books, so worry not when there is danger ahead. There is so much more to come and I can’t wait to dive deep into the depth.

I would like to thank SM Campbell for giving me a free electronic copy of Corrupted Tides. Above is my honest review of SM Campbell’s debut novel.

I encourage all those who love pirates, steampunk and epics to give Campbell’s debut novel a read.

A fast paced story that hooks you from the start, distinct voices from interesting characters, and world building as refreshing as a glass of kelp wine. This was a fun read—funny, spicy, with quite a bit of ocean-based metaphors and descriptive violence that really fit the characters and brutality of the setting. The weaving of both POVs was masterfully done. 5/5 And the sneak peek into book two has already made me so impatient for it to be released!!

Devoured this book in 3 days. Being the first book in a 7 book series it opens to a lot of world-building. A bit to get through but so worth it to understand the brilliance that makes up this oceanpunk sci-fi book.
My calendar will always be marked for when the next book will be coming out so I can pre-order. I'm also a person that can usually see the big twist coming.... I did not expect that ending. Better than anything I assumed was going to happen, I had many theories and none could have prepared me for what was happening.
Please do yourself a favor and read this book if you're a fan of DnD, Cthulu lore, steampunk, and anything weird. I think you would love this book as much as I did.

This indie author reaffirms why I love indie books. This is S.M. Campbell’s debut dark ocean punk fantasy, and it is indeed dark.

Before starting this, I’d like to acknowledge the extra little things Campbell did that make his world feel fresh and lived-in. He does what Herbert did with Dune, add lore and history through quotes, accounts, and passages from in-universe people and documents at the start of chapters. Plus, all of his little symbols and his flavor of art. It really helps to paint the world’s social anxieties, turmoil, and climate in its dark, bleak totality. Awesomeness.

We have two main characters here, Narrio, and Vila, both living grimey lives on the Planks in a water world known as, “The Swell.” I had heard that the inspiration for the planks and the world in general was a high seas take on Bloodborne, and Campbell did a great job of capturing that vibe. Trust me, once you start reading about the kind of things that go on in the Planks, you’ll wish you were back in Yarnham.

What I really dug about this book, besides the good pacing and unfolding of plot, was Campbell’s ability to really show off the horrid living conditions and uncleanliness of his world. The people of his world really reflect how low humanity has sunk (no pun intended) in the post-apocalypse. Crime is commonplace. Many are depraved. Nice things don’t exist. The main characters have trauma, and you can see it.

I’m excited to see the Swell unfold as Campbell writes more books. His voice is yet another boon to the world of indie fantasy; a story told on his terms, and his alone.
Corrupted Tides is a banger of a novel. Can’t wait for the second book, and I need to read Salvage!

I had the honor of being an ARC reader for S.M. Campbell’s debut novel, Corrupted Tides. I would like to thank Seth for giving me the early opportunity to read his book, and for dealing with my semi-incessant messaging including my predictions, reactions, and questions.

To start, it’s necessary to share my initial reaction to the climax of the book:
“**** I SHOULD HAVE GUESSED HE’D (redacted to remove spoilers). **** I’M SO DUMB AHHHHHHHHH. I never saw it coming.”

The strengths of this book are the methodical world-building and plotting. It is a slow-burn plot that leads to an extraordinary climax. Campbell is playing chess with the reader, and each of his moves is a deathly blow masked as everyday worldbuilding.

Before the start of each chapter, there is an epigraph. They are short enough to keep the reader in the experience but pointed enough to provide the reader with more information and help them understand the world of the Planks and the Swell.

Vila and Narrio, the novel’s two narrators, are largely based on character archetypes. Vila is a Blue Lady, an esteemed prostitute, while Narrio is a bumbling thief. As a reader, you must pay close attention to their descriptions, actions, and details to understand the complexity of each character. I found I didn’t understand Vila well until I was having a conversation about her, trying to pin down her motivations and behaviors.

Vila is well written, and I found her sections easy to read and follow. I had a more difficult time following Narrio as he moved through the Planks. Oftentimes, I felt his chapters were a whirlwind—as dizzying as his descent to the lower Planks.

From following Campbell on TikTok, I know this is book one of seven in his Eldritch Depths series. This book read like the setup to the series. It established the world on the Swell and how Vila and Narrio fit into it, and the climax set up the start of their transformative character arcs.

This is a must-read for anyone who loves slow-burn fantasy, strong female protagonists (think Katniss Everdeen with a bigger “chip” on her shoulder and no qualms with murder), and suave-but-not thieves (think Kaz/Jesper from Shadow and Bone).

Grammar-wise, there are some punctuation issues and syntax discontinuities throughout the book, but they were minor and did not take away from the story.

Campbell’s writing, world-building, and character arcs are going to improve with each novel in the series, and I’m excited to see the foreshadowing from the first book come to life in the next.

If you love a unique fantasy book, this one's for you. S.M Campbell’s imagination is wild! There is everything from kelp wine to corruption. The world he built within these pages was impressive and unique. The characters were unlike anything I’ve read. It’s clear Campbell has a talent for fantasy writing. Corrupted Tides is book one of a series, jump aboard and smooth sailing.

Absolutely amazing book with a stunning Narrator who did a great job.

If your a fan of Bloodborn, Waterworld, Pirates of the Caribbean, but mainly the dark bits, this is your book.

It's very character driven without sacrificing it's pacing. You get to know the two main character Vila and Narrio very well, even if somethings are left a mystery for later in the series.

Narrio is my favorite character. He's a thief with an interesting moral compass and a lot of humor. I will forever refer to him as Aladdin, but worse.

I want Vila to be my favorite character but she makes choices that, if she doesn't get her understandable rage under control, are going to see her not make it to the end of the series. So I'm afraid to get to attached.

The way this book ends has left me needing more and I can't wait to get ahold of the second book.

4.5 ⭐️ (spicy) / 5 ⭐️ (spice-free)

S.M. Campbell’s debut, Corrupted Tides, is everything you could ask for in a dark oceanpunk fantasy novel. With unique and robust characters, high stakes adventures, and an impeccably detailed world and magic system, Corrupted Tides leaves you wanting nothing more than to have the next book in your hands to continue the story.

What a read. Seriously, this was such an immersive adventure. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy, dual POV, pirates, high stakes adventure, badass FMCs, or just a bunch of perfectly clever and well timed puns 🤣

This book doesn’t read like a debut at all. Seth has a clear, defined voice that he carries the story with, while also differentiating his tone so accurately when switching between male and female POVs. I admittedly often choose not to read stories where a female POV is written by a male because it can often feel disingenuous, but Seth takes incredible care writing Vila as a believable and well rounded FMC. I wouldn’t change a thing about her.

The pacing of this story (especially being the first book in an extended series) is *chefs kiss* immaculate. For such an intricate world with a rich history and a magic system to understand, Seth gives us every bit of information we need, as we need it. I was never confused about the world or the magic system, but also never had to read through a huge lore dump that a lot of high fantasy books throw at you. The history, the small twists, everything was perfectly timed to keep the story moving forward and interesting all the way up to the end.

As a note, both a spicy and clean version of this story will be available. After reading the “spicy” version (2 main scenes, I wouldn’t consider this an overall “spicy” novel), my only negatives for this story would be that the tone (not the acts) of the spice comes out more aggressive than I prefer, especially the scene from the male POV. I don’t think a fade to black in these scenes would change your understanding of the affected relationships, so if that’s not your vibe, spice-free is my recommendation. Nothing is trigger-warning worthy by any means, just not my style as an avid rom-com reader.

If you’re looking for your next fantasy novel to read, definitely check this one out! This was a great debut book and found myself immersed in the story and the world the story took place in.

I found the premise of the story very unique and thought that the book had great character development and world building, with details of the world being revealed little by little as the book went on. This book took me on a fun, suspenseful adventure in a world where the ocean has flooded land and people live in towering, floating cities. How fun it is to explore what life is like within these floating cities, reading about the contrasting lifestyles of the people who live in the higher planks versus those who live on the lower planks.

The story revolves around the two main characters, Narrio and Vila. The main characters are vastly different from one another, and quite fascinating in their own way. They have their own vested interests, one on a mission to solve a mystery, while the other is on a secret mission. When the story comes together at the end, it is like an explosion of fireworks! The ending of this book - wow!! I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next book~

Just to note, there are a few spicy scenes in the novel. I appreciate the fact that the author is offering a version of the novel without them for readers who are not fans of spice.

I would like to thank the author for the opportunity of reading an ARC of this book. This was a voluntarily written, honest review of the book.

An ocean world you'll want to experience

This ocean filled world has a strong female lead and a funny male lead. With such strong description this book reminds you of a movie, filled with action, compassion and a ton of corruption.

Vila is a female lead that you've never experienced before. Her amount of love for people plus her strong opinions on how she lives makes her a strong favorite of any book. Having strong family name but didn't want anyone to know. She grew up going into the same profession as her mom.

Narrio, A thief who is very good at what he does. Has a strong sense of humor and living in a world full of water has a strong fear of it.

Read as the lower planks, which hold the unclean and the poor and the upper ranks, that hold the rich and the clean all fall when someone goes after the moon crystals to make weapons. The people who should have been trusted most are the ones to ultimately destroy everything built and the only one who has the power to stop it is Vila.

Dark, Immersive, Interesting and well thought out.
This series had earned auto-buy status for me.
Gritty, fast-paces, with no plot dumps to break immersion. I freakin loved it!
Two engaging, morally grey POV characters that have emotional and phycological depth, with understandable motivations. That react like actual humans not your standard, cookie cutter fantasy hero and heroine. The originality is an absolute breath of fresh air!
The world building is excellent, from the various underwater technologies, food, clothing, to the beverages, Campbell had me hearing the creak and groan of timber on the high seas.
The magic system was built with progression in mind, and for me, had a distinct feel of the original Final Fantasy 7's Materia system. You get a glimpse of what a fully augmented human will be like, I can't wait to see how the characters & magic progress.
I Can't wait for Eldritch Depths Book 2.

A book that has rewakened the world's interest in Oceanpunk? I hope so it did for me.

From the beginning to the end this book had me hooked.....

Except I'm still not sure how I feel about the happenings in the archives....I'm not going to spoil it read the book.

The way S.M. Campbell builds his world and it's characters is amazing. He gives the reader the right amount of information at the right time. I could go on and on but I'm not writing a book thats his job. ....can't wait until book 2 comes out

Corrupted Tides was a such a ride, in every way. I was excited going in for an epic adventure, and it did not disappoint. The characters were not only believable and relative, but also vastly entertaining, and the plot was a page turner. But what drew me in most was the impeccable detail and artistry behind the world of Corrupted Tides. Mr. Campbell is an artist. It was evident in the detail of the worldbuilding and the epigraphs that interwove to suggest an entire civilization of existence, merely than the small snippet we have the opportunity to experience. I am not usually a huge fan of graphic detail, but was impressed with the creativity and artistry woven into each of the action scenes.

I have a feeling we are only beginning to scratch the surface of what lies waiting for us within the swell, and am excited for what is to come!

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel. Solid 4.5 stars.

Dark, ocean punk fantasy is the perfect description. The world created by SM Campbell is super unique and interesting. The characters are deeply flawed yet still very likeable. The FMC is the definition of a morally grey heroine. There is a mysterious element to the magic at work in this world and I'm curious to see how it will play out in the rest of the series.

Fair warning that it's pretty violent and gory, and the gore is described in vivid detail. ;) Not usually my thing but it works for this story and the violence is integral to the FMC in particular.

Looking forward to the next book!

This book was terrific good fun! A rollicking page-turner with perfect pacing that had me wanting to sneak away from family throughout the Christmas holidays to continue reading. I really love when a book has a pull on you, and this one did.

Things I really appreciated: S.M. Campbell connected me emotionally to his characters, seemingly effortlessly, almost from page one. He is very good at “showing, not telling,” and I can’t tell you what a nice feeling it is when authors can do that and how frustrating it is when they can’t. Campbell can.

Related to the above. Campbell gives interiority and depth to his characters in a way I find a lot of authors struggle to do. It just seems like some people can do this and some people can’t. Again, Campbell can. I don’t read a lot of fantasy and so I (perhaps mistakenly) thought that most of the “action” would be exterior circumstance. But I personally like the stuff that’s going on INSIDE more, and so I found the character depth here really surprising and welcome.

There is also really good world building and creating a sense of place in “the Planks” which is the floating city where most of the external action takes place. A good author communicates PLACE without having to go into pages long, tangential descriptions. They just manage to put you in their world, so you can see, hear, feel, taste it, right along with the characters. Campbell took me on a field trip to another world and it felt immersive and satisfying.

Finally, I want to speak to the authenticity of the voicing. Each character spoke to me in my head with completely different voices, and not one of them was Campbell’s. That’s excellent! I recommend this book, it was a lot of fun and I will definitely be reading more in the series. I do recommend the clean version if you’re thinking of buying for kids or adolescents in your life. I’m not normally one to go for “clean” anything but the spice level in this is more NC-17 than R. Fine for me, but maybe not my 8th grader. Just for people to know.

This reminds you why you read fantasy. The world building is so thought out making it easy to immerse yourself into the world. The switch between POVS is done smoothly and you can definitely tell the difference in each character’s voice. Narrio is such a fun character to read and Vila is a perfect depiction of a strong female character. The story was compelling and intriguing. Overall this is a great dark fantasy read.

Amazing Read

When you look at the cover of this book you think of the movie Water World. That is were the similarities end with me. This book had action, compassion, corruption and a kick but female lead. If this sounds like something you would like to read. Read it you won’t be disappointed.
