The warlock I'm bound to is everything I should fear I shattered the spell that kept us caged. For centuries, our power belonged to them until I set our magic free and unleashed the wrath of every warlock who’d ruled over us.
Now, Kade hunts me. He controls power that no warlock should wield and he’s already destroyed my coven. And when a blood weave ties us together, he sees it as the perfect weapon to bind me—in every way that matters. Kade is arrogant enough to think he can break me.
He hasn’t realized that I’m no weak witch cowering in the shadows. He thinks I’ll submit but I’ll never let him take my magic or my freedom.
But the dark, forbidden bond between us keeps growing stronger and his fury only burns hotter. The warlock who once hunted me is about to learn the I’m chaos incarnate, and I’m going to destroy him—and everything he thought he controlled.
_ _ _ _ _ _ This is a dark and spicy paranormal romance featuring an anti-hero, a strong heroine, and contains scenes and references of abuse/assault that some readers may find triggering, along with graphic sex scenes and violence. This is a dark book, suitable for 18+ readers only.
CJ Holmes lives in England, where it's cold and damp, and it's always raining - which provides her with enough time to write stories about magic, fantasy and romance. She'd like to escape to somewhere warm but that might mean that she spends too much time sunbathing and not enough time writing books.
She lives in a quaint English cottage which would have one of those idyllic gardens if her fingers weren't the opposite of green. Fortunately, her husband and children don't seem to mind that almost everything she tries to grow ends up dead. She enjoys drinking wine and gin, which conveniently coincides with her love of reading and writing, as well as running and watching bad TV shows. You have been warned....
Absolutely love this book!!! It has magic, enemies to lovers, morally grey dirty mouthed mmc, strong and fierce fmc, spice and so much more. The banter between Zara and Kade is absolutely perfection to me. There is so much that goes on between them and the spice, oh the spice lol. Kade will definitely be you next book boyfriend 🫠. I absolutely loved every twist in this book and just what I was needing right now. It has been awhile since I’ve read a book with this type of world in it and have missed it. Definitely recommend giving this a read.
that was a wild ride that I loved very much . I didn't expect Kade and Zara to have me chokehold like that.
the fire in both, the darkness yet you came feel the tension the passionate fire between them . when he calls, he kitten. omg, I was screaming like a feral animal.
the degradation, the fear & so much more i was relating to Zara right there cause girl same.
I love how fierce and observant she is . the feminine rage in this book was chef kiss . I dont want to say too much. All I have is to say you will love Kade and Zara. they are my favorite characters now .
I absolutely love these kind of books. This is what gets me hooked .
one of my favorite quotes : “You’re going to wash and get some sleep, and then we’ll figure this out. Try to escape again, and you’ll be dealing with more than the blood weave’s wrath. I’ll be punishing you myself, and I assure you, I’ll do far worse than anything that bloody bond could do to you.”
Prepare to be spellbound! A Dawn of Darkness is an exhilarating journey into a world of dark magic, complex characters, and an unyielding battle for freedom. From the moment I delved into this captivating tale, I was entranced by the masterful storytelling and the vivid imagery that brought the coven and its secrets to life.
The enemies-to-lovers trope is executed flawlessly here. Kade, the brooding, dirty-mouthed warlock, is a formidable opponent, yet beneath his arrogance lies a vulnerability that makes him irresistible. The tension between him and Zara is palpable, and their fiery banter keeps you hooked from start to finish. I loved how their power imbalance evolves into a complex dance of desire and defiance.
What truly sets this book apart is its exploration of freedom and identity. Zara refuses to be caged by Kade's dark magic, embodying strength and resilience. The blood weave that binds them is not just a plot device; it symbolizes the intricate and often tumultuous relationships we forge in life.
CJ Holmes has crafted a narrative that's as thrilling as it is thought-provoking. The mix of witchcraft, moral ambiguity, and forced proximity creates a tension that will have you flipping pages late into the night.
If you’re a fan of strong characters, sizzling chemistry, and a touch of chaos, A Dawn of Darkness is a must-read. Mark your calendars for September 16, 2025—this book is going to be a sensation! 🌙✨💜
It was a dark romantasy of a witch and warlock, but with extreme bdsm and quite a bit of bitterness, angst, and frustration.
Two completely opposing sides who literally can’t stand each other — but also can’t stand being apart from each other. They are both chaos and equally dangerous, they just take their time to figure it out.
The sex was explicit. It was dirty and raw and unhinged. The tension was literally palpable through my kindle screen. The anger was overwhelming and perfect, especially for this story.
There were a few plot twists, that weren’t too intense, but I think they weren’t that intense to me because the entirety of the book was already so much 🤣🥵
There are a fair amount of trigger warnings in this book, so take your time reading through them.
But other than that, enjoy the destruction and chaos of a read 😈
Overall, 4.5 ⭐️, 3-4 🌶️
Thank you so much to CJ and team for allowing me to read an advanced copy of A Dawn of Darkness!
Things I love…..enemies to lovers, a unique magic system and a kickass FMC. This book had all 3 and more. The banter between Kade (a dirty mouthed mmc that you will definitely fall in love with) and Zara (the aforementioned kickass fmc) is top tier. The enemies to lovers were actually enemies to lovers and not just kind of dislike to lovers. The tension between the two….perfect. This book is intense in the best way. I was hooked from the beginning and the story had me feeling like a plot princess…..just along for the ride with no idea where it was going next. It was just the right amount of dark. And I can’t wait for the last instalment of this series.
Dark, spicy, and addictive! Witches, warlocks, enemies-to-lovers, and explosive magic. Zara and Kade’s fiery love-hate romance had me hooked the whole way through.
I don’t read too much paranormal romances with witches and warlocks but this was pretty darn good. Loved the magic, enemies to lovers aspect, banter, world building, details, plot (all the twists & turns), storyline, everything basically. Zara is this powerful, fierce witch and Kade is this dirty-mouthed, brooding warlock. They danced around each other with defiance and desire it just built up the tension so much. And the character building I think is what pulled me in, to just see how they progress over time. I feel like this book was beautifully written, just like book 3, which is the only other book in the series I’ve read. But I loved this so much!! 💕🩷
Zara the FMC a powerful witch who seemed freedom but found a whole lot of trouble instead. Zade the MMC a powerful warlock who was supposed to hunt the witch. However, they found each other and fell in love with some extra spice and spoilers I won’t tell. I ate this book like chefs kiss.
Wow! That was an intense ride!! Perfect amount of spice and an Insane enemies to lovers trope. The character building was amazing, I could clearly picture each character as I was reading. I feel their story is far from over so eagerly awaiting another book!!!
Holy crap what a wild ride! This book had me hooked from Page ONE. Talk about morally black MMC AND FMC…. This was a true enemies to lovers and the love was the only slow burn with this. The lust was happening right off the bat and OFTEN- 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️. There was a definite plot line that was appreciated as well with me anxious to know what was going to happen. Definitely check the trigger warnings before reading. Some parts were tough for me but I knew what to expect before I read the book. Well done for the genre for sure!!
“A Dawn of Darkness” is a spicy, dark paranormal romance by CJ Holmes. It is the fourth book in the “Dark and Devilish” series of standalones. Some contents/depictions, such as S&M, may be triggering for readers, and there is a content warning page for your review.
When Zara breaks the sigil that binds her coven's magic to the warlocks, she believes that revolution is at hand. Instead, her coven condemns her, exiling her to a covenless existence so they may live. Refusing to be bound again, she flees deep into the mountains, knowing the warlocks will not be far behind. Kade can smell the chaos magic in the air, and each witch slain does nothing to balance it. The hunt for the powerful witch is on. When a blood bond is forced upon them, they are unable to stop their magic from fusing the control and chaos between them. As the bond between them heats, so does their love affair, leaving them both in danger. Will Kade be able to break the bond between them and restore balance? Will Zara be once again bound to another warlock?
Tropes Fated Mates, Enemies-to-lovers, “For Her”, Touch her and die, shadow daddy, witch x warlock, power imbalances, unwilling mates, Morally (dark) gray MCs, S&M
At 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️.5, this book is HOT! Kade and Zara are oil and water, fighting every step of their journey. Together, they explore S&M, brat behavior, devotion, and control as they fall in love with the darkest parts of each other.
CJ Holmes creates a powerful, morally gray, revolutionary witch in Zara. Her opening lines and determination scream and exude power. There were passages I read that made me think both, “That’s a strong woman,” and, to quote Markiplier, “That’s some respectable power right there.” She goes through a metamorphosis over the course of the story, rising from the ashes of her past into someone strong, resolved, and unbending.
When I began to read, Kade, like Zara, radiated power. Even as a dark romance, there were moments where I thought of Kade’s character and just thought, “Well, that’s just mean,” until it hit me: he’s angry because he’s enamored. Think: Squidward when he tries a Krabby Patty. As soon as that realization hit, his behavior made a lot more sense. He falls HARD. He comes to terms with finding his equal in his enemy and the order in chaos.
“A Dawn of Darkness” emphasizes the plot and romance over world-building; we are given glimpses of the world around us. Forested, dark, and surrounded by warlock fortresses. We learn the hierarchy of magic between witches and warlocks, but we are given breadcrumbs into its history that I was curious about. Regardless, “A Dawn of Darkness” is a good dark romance that focuses on romance, devotion, power, and finding your equal amidst the dark.
A Dawn of Darkness is an enthralling tale of magic, lust, and the complex journey of two unlikely lovers. Kade, a powerful warlock, and Zara, a resilient witch, are thrown together by a curse that ignites an intense and desperate desire between them. The story begins with Kade's ruthless pursuit of Zara, driven by a thirst for revenge after he kills her coven. However, their fated encounter leads to a curse that binds them, forcing them to confront their deepest fears and desires.
As the narrative unfolds, Kade's initial portrayal as a jerk adds depth to his character, making his eventual redemption more impactful. His complex emotions and the struggle between his duty and his growing feelings for Zara create a compelling arc. Zara, on the other hand, is a beacon of strength and independence, her character growth a delight to witness. Her journey from a hunted witch to a powerful and self-assured woman is both inspiring and satisfying.
The book excels in its exploration of the magical world, weaving together elements of magic, curses, and the supernatural with a deft hand. The chemistry between Kade and Zara is palpable, and their fated mate bond adds a layer of intensity to their relationship. For readers who enjoy stories of magical realms, strong character development, and the allure of fated mates, A Dawn of Darkness is a must-read. It offers a rich tapestry of emotions, action, and romance that keeps readers engaged until the very end.
✦ 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬 - • dark paranormal romance • enemies to lovers • fated mates • morally grey mmc • magical world • intense chemistry
✦ 𝐌𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 - This book was an absolute ride from the very first page. The way the author mixes darkness with romance is just magical. Every chapter pulled me deeper into this intense, dangerous, and beautifully twisted world. The pacing was perfect – never a dull moment, always something happening that made me want to read just one more page. The characters were written so well, with layers that made them feel alive. Kade had that perfect morally grey energy that makes you fall for him even when you know you shouldn’t. Zara was strong yet relatable, and together they had a chemistry that was off the charts. The banter, the stolen glances, the emotional moments – everything felt so real. I also loved how the magical elements were woven into the romance without ever taking away from it. The world-building was rich and vivid, making me feel like I was right there with them, facing every danger and feeling every spark. This was one of those reads that kept me thinking about the characters even after I turned the last page. Thank you so much C.J. Holmes for the free ARC!!
This was an incredibly spicy dark paranormal romance that had me hooked from start to finish. If you love enemies-to-lovers and forced proximity, this book delivers in the best way. With witches, warlocks, a charged power imbalance, and bursts of explosive magic, the story is both intense and captivating.
I truly enjoyed watching Zara and Kade evolve and learn to not only trust, but to truly love one another while wielding each other’s deadly magic. They are the very definition of morally grey, and their volatile love-hate relationship burns into a fiery, undeniable desire. Their chemistry not only fuels the romance but also becomes the driving force in their battle against the true evil lurking in the shadows. A thrilling blend of passion, darkness, and magic—this is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy romance.
C.J. has done it again! Another great read from her.
Zara, who is strong-willed, sassy, doesn't hold back her thoughts and opinions and doesn't back down from anyone, especially Kade.
Kade, who is dominant through and through, takes what he wants, and his presence commands those around him.
Zara, who no longer wants to be under the control of the warlocks, she wants to have the freedom to be able to use her magic as she sees fit. She goes against her coven and breaks the sigil all on her own to free herself and her coven from the warlocks hold. But with that, her actions have consequences, and the events after forces her and Kade onto figuring out what needs to be done to restore balance.
Both Kade and Zara tried hard to keep a distance between one another, but it wasn't in the cards for them.
ARC provided from the author for an honest review.
Are you looking for your next book boyfriend who will burn for you and only you? Kade has it all. What about a strong FMC who can do bad all by herself? Zara's got you covered.
A Dawn of Darkness will have you gobbling this down like it's your last breath. The plot keeps you intrigued, and sometimes your jaw dropped (Think Klaus from TVD yelling Rebekkah, only we're screaming for CJ). The spice was chef's kiss, and honestly, it had me questioning myself.
Zara and Kade are everything I look for in my books. The banter, the spice, the magical world. It all comes together seamlessly. Waiting for you to begin this journey with them. It's a risk you definitely need to take!
First things first: read the triggers. Take them seriously. If it’s not for you, that’s okay—protect your mental health. This one leans a little darker than what I usually read, and it took me a few weeks to finish because of that.
But, gods, what a book. It’s so well written. The details and the descriptions make it so you can see everything in your mind. No confusion, just crystal-clear imagery.
Now, let’s talk Zara and Kade. Classic enemies to lovers, but when I say enemies, I mean enemies. Their relationship is toxic in the best, dark romance kind of way. Think of all the red flags.
The plot, is an actual plot. It’s battles, magic, sex, heartbreak (yes, my heart was shattered more than once), deception, revenge. Everything that makes a dark romance, good. Not too cliche or predictable. Enough to make you want more.
By the end, my heart was completely healed and beating for these two lovers.
If you’re craving a very dark magical romance—with an MMC who will ruin you and an FMC who might be even darker—this is the book.
Zara is done with being under the warlocks thumbs. She is done having them use her and her covens power for their selfish needs. The warlocks see themselves as superior. The ones with higher power and more education, therefore more important. Warlocks keep all covens under their control using sigil magic, and Zara is bound and determined to break it. Kade...Kade is an ass. He's hot af, but an ass nonetheless. I think I spent a lot of time reading this, and wanting Zara to physically punch him right in the nose. Kade is one of the warlocks sent to see who broke the sigil that was supposed to be nigh on impossible. Their introductory meeting doesn't end well, and things get...entangled...on many levels. Their story is one of extreme ups and downs and a lot of spicy moments. Kade helps Zara come into her own powers and he comes to discover along the way she is more his equal than he had first come to realize.
This was a very good read. It kept me reading long after I should have gone to sleep. Highly recommend for anyone that likes dark romantasy.
This is book 4 in the Dark and Devilish series. You do not have to read these in order though.
Do you love a good story with witches, warlocks, magic, love/hate, tension, and more? If the answer is yes, then this will be a book for you.
This is a dark enemies to lovers with some spice. It will have your emotions all over the place and pulling in so many directions. Ohh the hate these main characters have for each other….
This book... OMG. If you love a dark, enemies to lovers romance, you have to read this book.
Kade is a strong, dominant, dirty mouthed MMC that you just can't help but fall for. Zara is a feisty, bad ass FMC who takes no shit from anyone, and she may be even darker than Kade. And when Kade finally falls, he falls hard and fast, and the most amazing romance ensues.
This book had everything for me. Enemies to lovers? Check ✔️. Great, witty banter? Check✔️. Bad ass FMC? Check ✔️. Take charge, sexy MMC? Check, check, and check ✔️! And the spice? Oh my God, yes! Top tier spiciness that might make you question your own sanity!
This was most definitely a 5 star read for me for sure. I will be recommending this book to every one of my friends, and I can't wait to read more from CJ Holmes. I have officially gained a new favorite author!
This was spell binding, captivating and enthralling. I did not want to put this book down.
I love the world that CJ built with this book. Zara was powerful, she does what she wants and refuses to explain.
Kade was abrasive at first, it took me a while to warm up to him. He was kind of an a-hole to be honest. But he did change his tune and became quite the MMC.
If you are looking for witches and warlock vibes. This book is for you. If you want a kick ass MFC this book is for you!!
This book was fantastic. This book contains enemies to lovers (oh boy did they hate each other!!), plot twists, dark elements and romance. Zara and Kade are the main characters who give you all the banter and spice you needed in your life. The book is very well written and kept my attention the entire time.
The plot and smut is well balanced. The world building was easy and not overwhelming. The ending was perfect. There were times in the book I was pretty much yelling.
Zara and Kade’s relationship reminded me of Klaus and Caroline’s relationship, but darker.
It was good. I did genuinely like this book. It took me a minute to get into it. It’s not that it was slow to start just not really my cup of tea. However at the end I couldn’t seem to put it down!!
Kade was fantastic, I was jealous of Zara for sure!!
I haven’t read the other books in this series but I will definitely be reading them now!!
A Dawn of Darkness is a thrilling mix of dark magic, fiery romance, and the fight for freedom. Kade, the arrogant yet vulnerable warlock, and Zara, a heroine who refuses to be caged, bring the enemies-to-lovers trope to life with banter that sparks on every page. More than just a romance, the story explores identity, power, and resilience, with the blood weave symbolizing the bonds that both trap and transform us. CJ Holmes delivers a darkly addictive tale you won’t want to put down.
Wow! This was my first book by C.J. Holmes and it won't be my last.
A Dawn of Darkness follows Zara, a witch and Kade a warlock. Their paths cross after Zara disrupts the magical balance between witches and warlocks. I'll admit I disliked both Zara and Kade to start but they grew on me as the story progressed. Zara was a strong badass female who could take care of herself. Kade was dealing with the change in the magical balance he was sworn to uphold. When two strong, stubborn people collide, sparks fly. Literally and figuratively. They have a banter that I loved. They had me laughing out loud.
This book is dark (please check the TW.) but it's a story of bad vs badder, with a definite power imbalance. There were twists I never saw coming. There were lots of familiar tropes but some were done in different was which I loved.
🌙 Enemies to Lovers ✨️ Dirty Mouthed MMC 🌙 Power Imbalance ✨️ C@ptor / C@ptive 🌙 Almost Morally Black MMC ✨️ He Falls First & Hard 🌙 Witch / Warlock Magic ✨️ Strong FMC 🌙 Forced Proximity ✨️ Banter
If you love enemies to lovers; then this read is for you! Kade and Zara are 110% for you and you will eat up their story! It is fire, spice, and everything not-so-nice! Kade is willing to burn the world down for Zara “his kitten”! Yes, everytime he says “kitten” you will be sweating!! 🥵🔥🐱 Witches and warlocks! Fated Mates!! Morally grey MMC and feisty, badass FMC!! Spice scenes that are spicier than spicy!! 🌶️ A wild, dark and twisty ride with so many unexpected turns that will leave you gasping for more and more!! Kade and Zara’s character development is addicting in the worst way! I ate this up and couldn’t get enough! 🖤🔥🌶️ CJ Holmes is devilish and brilliant!! 🖤
Nothing better than a dark and spicy paranormal romance to let your mind dig into with Zara the FMC a powerful witch and mix it up with Zade the MMC a powerful warlock and we have spicy. The characters were easy to fall in love with and make your emotions feel the love they had. Very well written and can’t wait for the next book by author CJ Homes.
This was my second read by C.J. Holmes and she did not disappoint!!! This story had quite a bit more angst between the MCs, much more struggle between them to get to their HEA.
I can't lie, I had such a love-hate relationship with Kade through this whole book. I would think Kade was redeeming himself, but then he would slip backward. Zara is such a strong FMC that she had my heart from the beginning.
This was a really good, hard-won enemies-to-lovers. These two are enemies on so many levels, and it does take them a bit to be romantic with one another. Yet it's not a slow-burn by any means, just angry sex. And a couple of very good twists I didn't see coming at the end.
