Rate this book
While studying English and Arabic, Amber embarked on an unexpected spiritual journey. Relating to five university friends—two Muslim and two Christian students and one godly, gray-bearded backpacking instructor—caused her to ponder things she had never thought of before.

Amber began to wonder if she was truly following Christ and obeying God’s Word. The practical issue that caught her attention was modesty. As an experiment, she decided to wear an Amish dress to school for three months.

Amber believed the Bible was God’s Word but wrestled with how it applies to Christians today. She became convinced that all of the New Testament has applied to all Christians since the church began.

Follow Amber’s spiritual journey from honors student to foreign missions to an Anabaptist brotherhood. Her story is an encouraging testimony of God’s faithful guidance and grace when we commit to follow Him wholeheartedly.

What happens when someone dares all in obedience to her understanding of God's expectations for her life? She is changed—into a person of more beauty and freedom. But, oh, the courage it takes, to dare all.

I don't know how to rate someone's story. I was going to say "a solid four" but realized most of the books I give four stars to are more readable. I loved the author's humility and kindness in sharing her story without pressure on others to choose as she did. The book format felt a little disjointed, but I enjoyed recognizing a few names, including a couple who has eaten at our table. And I love the cover! It was rewarding to read the story behind the quiet, somewhat worried-looking woman I recently observed at a writer's meeting. Yet I only realized it was her story when I saw her picture.

Amber says that she wore what she did in order to fit in and to make a favorable impact on the people she wanted to impress. Most people, including Mennonites, choose their own clothing accordingly. She has given far more thought to what she wears than most of her adopted culture ever has. The one thing I grapple with, related to the subject matter, is what Jesus said about taking no thought for what we should wear. As far as I could tell, this never came up in the book. Don't get me wrong, I feel that most of us could dress more modestly. Some of us, however, don't have to dare all to do it.

This is a book I would recommend; I thought immediately of someone I wanted to pass my copy on to.

I give it 5 stars because I appreciate her honesty and straight forwardness but it felt like someone giving her testimony in real time and not a polished book.
