I finally escaped the hell I was trapped in, ran away to a new state and was prepared to start a new life. Meeting someone was never apart of the escape plan, but one look at him and I knew I was done for. The omen of what I've done is haunting me, lurking in the shadows and threatening to come back to light. I can never let him find out the truth. No one can.
Miles
I never knew what I wanted in life, not until I met her. I didn't think I could ever fall in love, but she has the power to wreck me completely. There's something hiding beneath the surface of her innocence and I intend to find out what it is, even if it kills me.
Lizz Beasley is an emerging author of dark romances. She lives in Tennessee with her family and dogs, who she loves so much. When she is not writing, she is either reading, watching Friends or The Vampire Diaries for the millionth time, or watching a classic horror movie. Going to concerts and the drive in are amongst some of her favorite things to do, but she has a passion for family, so spending her days being snuggled up with her babies is the most important thing to her.
Am I biased because I wrote this book? Yes. Do I love it anyways and gonna rate it whatever tf I want? Also yes. Go get Mortala on February 14th, 2025!
“she’s looking like a fucking angel with the devil in her eyes.“
this felt like a scream movie and i loved every single second of it.
first off, miles was sexy from the get-go. tattooed mmc with dark hair and pretty eyes? immediately sign me up. i loved how miles decided right off the bat that madelyn was going to be his, nothing more sexy than a love interest in a book that knows what/who they want. he was so protective over his girl, but had such a soft heart at the same time, which made him even sexier.
madelyn, she was so much stronger than she believed herself to be. she was running from her past, not letting anyone into her heart or allowing them to break down her walls. after her and miles’ meet cute, though, that man was determined to get to know her, and she slowly let him see the darkest parts of her. despite how small she felt, she absolutely gave final girl energy, and i didn’t doubt her ability to stand up to her mystery stalker one bit. like miles said, she’s an angel with the devil in her eyes.
thank you so, so much to lizz for the e-arc!
★ spicy spice ★ dark romance ★ college setting ★ touch her and die ★ virgin fmc x heavily tattooed mmc
Mortala, Lizz Beasley’s debut novel, is a twist filled suspenseful dark romance thriller that I devoured in one sitting.
The characters are well thought out and despite the romance between Madelyn and Miles toeing the line of insta-love, it didn’t bother me because sometimes it does occur quickly like that, especially at that age.
There’s lots of spice, but it’s not all that there is; if the dark romance spice scenes were removed, you would still have a pretty solid psychological thriller.
While I figured out who was stalking Maddie early on in the book, it still didn’t take away the suspense, and there were still twists that I didn’t see coming. I also loved that the ending wasn’t wrapped up in a pretty bow and that it was a realistic look into what their lives would be after the hell they went through.
Mortala is a very good debut book, although there are some instances of characters repeating themselves multiple times or certain descriptors and phrases reoccurring frequently. Luckily Beasley has a solid plot so any little issues like that are easily forgiven.
I’m excited to see what Beasley has in store for us in the future…
“Maybe it’s just my insecurities from being around my father, but I’m always afraid that I’m doing something to upset the people around me. I can’t help it. The trauma is burned into my brain.”
This quote stuck out to me the most. Because MAN can I relate.
Mortala is a spicy college romance with a great addition of suspense.
Madelyn just wants to be free. After one dark night she finally escapes. Unfortunately that darkness seems to have followed her no matter how hard she’s tried to hide it. Miles sees Madelyn and becomes utterly consumed by her. Never in his life did he think he’d feel like this about someone. And he’s not letting her go. No matter the demons she may be hiding he’s willing to stand up against them with her. The one thing neither one them suspected would get in the way of their fiery connection. Someone from Maddie’s past. And they want her.
The instant connection Maddie and Miles have was utterly adorable. Sometimes instalove is just so 🥰 I loved the way Miles immediately turned protective over her. I did see the twists coming but it didn’t take away from the story for me whatsoever. The spice was SPICIN 🥵🔥
You won’t want to miss this if you like suspense with your romance!!
My sweet Maddie baby. Life put her through the wringer! But she wasn’t gonna let anything hold her back. After leaving an abusive home, and leaving her past behind her, she finds her past quickly catching up to her and becomes the center of attention for her stalker. 𝘾𝙪𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙠, 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙧! 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙚𝙙!
And her stalker won’t let anyone come between them. Not even the handsome, tattooed Miles.
Miles, our newest sweet and possessive book boyfriend, is instantly infatuated with Maddie and is determined to protect her at all costs. The way he cares for and loves Maddie from the very beginning had me swooning!
Listen, the plot had me playing detective and questioning every single person. But the plot twist! The ending! 🤯 And let’s not forget the spiiiice! We love a man who demands words 👏🏼
I went in blind to Lizz’s first ever book and I’m sure glad I did 🥰
It has all the things: spice, mysterious MMC, trauma, spicy FMC, mystery, tension, did I mention spice and trauma?!
Madelyn is full of her own mysteries that come out as Lizz creates the world. Miles her instant crush has you swooning over his mysterious past and present from the first moment. Lizz did a great job weaving the world and setting her story up. Fabulously done debut novel!
I was given the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book!
Releasing February 14th, 2025!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5
☆ College Romance ☆ Obsessed and super overprotective MMC ☆ Trauma healing and strong FMC ☆ Insta-love ☆ Tattooed MMC ☆ Praise ☆ Touch her you 💀 ~~~~~~~ The story: I liked the plot! A girl from a super small town in Alabama moving to California for a better life? Hell yeah! Although I have seen this story formula before, I loved how the story never slowed and the plot never really thickened or thinned and was flushed out when it needed to be. I did feel like this was a super fast paced story, where the characters looked at each other once and instantly became obsessed and pushy. But a fast paced story is not a badly written story at all! I felt that this plot almost lined up with Pretty Little Fears by S.J. Ryder (not exactly obviously, but there were some similar vibes I picked up:))! Both books did an equally great job with capturing resilient characters:)
The characters: Miles… miles miles miles miles miles, put your tattooed hand on my throat right tf now… um haha whaaaaattttt?? You didn’t hear that pfft 🤭 MY MAN- tattooed, obsessive, gives forehead kisses, AND praises? Um he checks all the marks ✅ And Madelyn. My baby- my shaylaaaaaaaa! Gosh the things you had to go through:( GAH! And Kaitlyn. Yeah. Ok. And Austin. Ok yeah hi to you too I guess. AHH I loved these characters so much! Each brought their own little slice of personality to this pie of a story and I loved it! I am an emotional person, so I do understand the panic attacks and anxiety attacks. I understand that they can look different for everyone too! Where mine are more of a freeze and silent cry, Maddie’s are more of a loud cry and actual panic. And both are equally valid ☺️ She does cry a lot tho lol ANYWAY- Miles, Mr. Miles, hi dude! Miles was great. He was all up in Maddie’s business the first time he saw her and didn’t really stop, but he loved her and that’s what was important ☺️ it did get on my nerves how insta this instalove was though:/ It happened SUPER fast, and I didn’t feel like the pace of how they (well, how Miles demanded) got together was justified and I felt like there could have been a little bit more character relationship growth rather than building the story around it. BUT- maybe fast paced instalove just isn’t for me! And that is A-ok :D This love story may be the perfect fit for someone else!
The spice: I gave this a 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5 on the pepper scale. There were about 6 open door scenes, with a tiny half steamy/mild scene but with a shit ton of horny thoughts from an 18-19 year old kid and his instalove girlfriend lol all of it was great! I love a good shower scene >:) But wait- there’s multiple 👹👹 NDEJKFOEIE SO HOT BAHAHA!!!!!!! (Sorry it is also 2:07 in the morning as I am writing this, so I’m a little delirious.) Anyway, I just loved how much Miles worshipped Maddie. There was no kinkiness or anything, just loving, passionate, and sweet love making (kinda lol) but definitely a dominating personality in Miles!! “Eyes on me.” FUCK. YEAH. 💪 🫠
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this in advance! And I hope to read more from Ms. Beasley in the future!
I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this book. But when I started reading the prologue, it immediately had my attention. We have an FMC who has been through the crap and tries to get away from it all by moving to California to go to school. At school she not only finds a sexy, yet possessive in a good way guy that immediately determined that she was his, but she also soon realizes that she has a stalker. I got pulled in by the story and needed to know what was going to happen next. This was a great story for someone that wants to cross into the dark side of romance but doesn’t want to dive straight into the deep end. The flow of this story was nice and I really didn’t want to put it don’t once I got into it. There was enough suspense to keep my interest, and the characters were the kind to really get you invested in their story.
Maddie was one of those FMCs that has had so much trauma in her past that you really want to see the best things for her. Even though she has been through so much, she really hasn’t been able to experience much of life. She was an abuse victim and was only able to escape that because of her strength and tenacity. I love a character like Miles. He is one of those MMCs that you know is going to be good to the FMC, but he obsession with her is borderline creepy. He knows from the minute that he meets Maddie that she is going to be his. Miles is on the good side of the creepy line (meaning he isn’t creepy but a wrong turn could send him down that path). But he is nothing but good to Maddie and he is so protective of her.
This was a good college romance that had enough twists and turns to dip its toes into the dark romance world. There are so very good spicy scenes and the chemistry between Miles and Maddie was fantastic. This was a book that will grip you and before you know it, you’ll be at the end. It is definitely worth the read and it is so much more than just a basic romance. The plot will pull you in and you’ll find it’s definitely story intriguing.
I absolutely devoured and inhaled everything about this debut!!
Mortala starts off with a BANG—like a rock meeting a skull😉— in the prologue and the suspense continues simmering as the plot thickens- and boy are you in for a twist. Sure, it’s got the classic insta-love trope, but I found myself all in for it!
Madelyn is a strong and resilient FMC and I LOVED HER! Maddie has been through the ringer between past trauma and the lingering memories that haunt her even though she desperately tries to leave them in the past. Maddie packed her bags and made a cross-country escape from her past, ready to start her new life in college with her walls sky-high, wanting to keep everyone at arm’s length... that is, until she bumps into Miles! 🤭
Miles is our greenest red flag, blue-eyed, tattoo-covered —tender-hearted and fiercely protective, “eyes on me” MMC and he is determined to break down Maddie’s walls and make her his.😮💨 He is all in for Maddie and shows that regardless of the challenges that comes with her, he will do whatever it takes to protect her. -Hands down a new book boyfriend to add to the harem.🫠
The twists. the turns. the emotions. the SPICE. the chemistry. Mortala has it all. I related with Maddie on so many levels, and Miles? Oh man, I was head over heels OBSESSED!😍
𝓣𝓻𝓸𝓹𝓮𝓼: 🖤Touch her and 💀 🤍Obsessive/Possessive MMC 🖤St@lker (Not MMC) 🤍Damsel in Distress turned Bad@$$ 🖤V!rg!n FMC 🤍College Romance
I got this as an arc from the author here is my honest opinion. I really liked this book, the way it flowed and got into the action right away. You follow Maddie who escapes her abusive father to start her new life in college on the west coast. She meets her grungy not so talkative roommate and then her new bff Kaitlin. Becoming fast friends Kaitlin invites her to the first party of the new school year. In getting ready for the day she bumps into Miles. At the party she sees Miles again and they become friendly. Only to be interrupted by an ominous text from an unknown number and a BRICK crashing thru the window they’re in. Maddie feels her past catching up with her. Throughout the book Miles and Maddie become closer romantically and danger ensues. Messages, threats and home invasion, they get worse by the day. “Unknown” terrorizes their relationship and they’re on a mission to catch the stalker wreaking havoc on their lives. Shocking revel and action packed ending. Just the right amount of spice. This was definitely a page turner, and would recommend to friends who like thriller/suspense/mystery with some spice.

• Did I get this today? Yes. Am I ready to scream about it. ALSO YES. I honestly had ZERO doubts about this book and I was right. It was SO freaking gooooooood.
• Madleyn, our babe goes through A LOT. Trauma follows her to her college days, and when she sleeps she’s pulled from her nightmares from it. She’s haunted by the past. But she’s a toughie. And then she meets him. Miles, the guy who pretty much falls instantly for her. Even though she is all, we can’t. He’s all oh we can. Also he’s all who hurt you, I will burn down the world for you. Swoon. I love this MMC, he’s everything you want in one wrapped up in well, everything Miles.
• Let’s talk about the stalker. She’s got one, and man does he f*ck with their lives. When you get towards the end and find out who. You’re all whattttttttt. Damn, and the accomplice. Shook.
• Obsessed is an understatement. I immediately messaged her and told her to start writing more please because I am all in. I need it. She needs to give me more books 😂
The stalker genre of books has always been a high interest for me and I was so excited to read this book as my introduction.
I love Maddie and Miles from the beginning. As if fate purposely brought them together. They were meant for each other. With Miles being as sweet as he was to Maddie in the beginning and wouldn’t touch her without her permission. Swoon. Instantly. Instalove was very high in this one but it was written perfectly 🖤
While there were highs throughout the book, I quickly figured out how the stalker was which sucked because I felt like I ruined the story for me but leading up to Maddie facing her stalker was chefs kiss. Girl took all her anger and trauma and took matters into her own hands like a badass.
There is a bit of a nod or hint in Maddie’s epilogue that I hope will create possible a spin off because it would be interesting to see this story from a different point of view.
Now if you excuse me, I need to go find myself a protective man like Miles 👀
“What did I tell you about using your words, Madelyn?”
Mortala is a tale of secrets, mystery, and new beginnings. Madelyn is our main character. She’s been through hell and back, so you can imagine she is gonna want a fresh start.
She’s set off to a new life, beginning her college career and meeting new people. This fresh new chapter brings her path to a crossing where she meets Miles. It’s all sunshines and blushing cheeks until a freaking stalker pops up, raining on her parade—it’s messy, messy but so juicy!
Miles was a great guy; since the beginning he was ride or die for Madelyn and always advocated for her. He was obsessed and was locked in like white on rice. And my baby Madelyn was a survivor. She’s endured some dark days, but she was such a strong character.
The plot was a smooth, engaging ride that turned into a journey of twists and turns. I couldn’t turn away from the scenes that Madelyn and Miles were going through, and the twist at the end?! Jaw dropped!
Their love story was a wild ride, but a journey so endearing it’ll make it all worthwhile! Definitely check it out when it releases!
Mortala is a captivating tale that balances sweetness with a hint of darkness, and I absolutely loved it! The chemistry between Madelyn and Miles is not just strong; it's downright lovable. Their connection pulls you in from the start, making the emotional stakes feel incredibly real.
While I initially struggled to get into the story, once I found my rhythm, I couldn't put it down. The pacing picks up beautifully, and I found myself invested in their journey. I did have a moment of frustration with Madelyn's choices—especially when she basically gives them away—but the resolution was satisfying and left me feeling hopeful.
Lizz Beasley has a gift for storytelling, and despite my initial hiccups, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I'm definitely going to seek out more of her work! If you're looking for a read that blends romance with a touch of suspense, Mortala should be on your list.
This book was such a great read, I couldn’t put it down, and released on Valentine’s Day! The plot was plotting and just needed to know who was haunting her and not letting her past stay in the past. She wants to escape and start a new life. But she definitely like me wasn’t prepared to meet him.
MILESSSSSSSSSSS! I was whole heartily not prepare for him. He was so dedicated, possessive, sweet, and knew how to be gentle while stern and supportive with Madelyn.
Sweet, sweet, Madelyn did not deserve the childhood she was given or the abuse she endured while growing up. She is strong and refuses to let anyone get hurt or hold her back anymore. She just wants a normal college experience.
If you love a good romance and thrilling twists, this is the book for you. I LOVED it!
Miles is so hot, he’s tattooed, dark, sexy. From the first page. I love when a mmc sees the fmc and immediately just says ‘mine.’ I don’t know what that trope is called, but I eat it up EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Madelyn, she was so badass. She was running from things that had happened to her before. And of course was trying to shield her heart and not let anyone in. But did Miles let that stop him? No. Of course not.
I absolutely loved the two of them together. He was tough on the outside, but had that soft spot for her on the inside.
I just finished reading “Mortala” by Lizz Beasley and I’m STILL reeling! This book has everything I love in a dark romance - forced proximity, a possessive MMC, and a villain who’s seriously creepy.
The MMC falls HARD for the FMC at first glance and I was 100% here for it. His vulnerability and devotion to her had me swooning.
But let’s talk about the creepy stalker... I was on edge every time he appeared but it was kinda obvious who it was, and the abusive father subplot added an extra layer of tension.
Overall, I’m obsessed with this book! If you’re a fan of dark romance, you need to read “Mortala” ASAP. Just be prepared for a wild ride and some sleepless nights!
Now for Q&A Would I recommend this book? Yes
Was the spice SPICY? Yes
Was the plot twisting? Yes and no. It was too obvious.
I really thought I was not going to be able to finish this book because I really related to Madelyn. Just thinking about it I still tear up. I just want to hug her and I’m so glad I did finish this book.
"Maybe it's just my insecurities from being around my father, but I'm always afraid that I'm doing something to upset the people around me. I can't help it. The trauma is burned into my brain."
I was so excited to receive this arc! The author did such an incredible job. This book was absolutely amazing. I was hooked. I was unable to put this book down. This book felt like a thriller. It kept me on my toes with all these twist and turns and I really enjoyed this book and I am so excited to read more from this author.
Just when I thought I had it figured out, I changed my mind. And then I changed it again. This book had me doubting a lot of things, continually guessing, and at some points questioning almost everything.
There’s a sea of green flags, red flags, and warning lights. I decided it was safer to be color blind while reading this one.
Maddie and Miles have an instant connection that continues to grow despite everything that is happening. Miles is very protective and cares deeply. He’ll do anything to help Maddie and keep her safe. Maddie is determined to keep her past hidden and doesn’t want to get Miles involved. She tries to deny and fight the feelings she has for him.
There’s plenty of suspense, tension, and spice in this book. It will keep you on your toes. Be sure to check CW/TW.
**E-ARC Review** The following is my own honest opinion: 4.5 Stars rounded up
I went in to this read completely blind. I had applied for the ARC because the cover caught my interest. I was hooked immediately. Mortala is a dark college romance with a little stalker/suspense added in . Our FMC, Madleyn, has experienced lots of TRAUMA!!! I was instantly infatuated with the instalove relationship of Madleyn and Miles (the MMC). Miles is so protective, its adorable. The suspense element was cool, although I did figure out the twist fairly quickly, I still really enjoyed the story. The spice was spicing and well done. The trauma and mental health representation in the story is also well done and relatable. I can't wait to see what Lizz has up her sleeve next!
I absolutely LOVED Mortala and the chemistry built between Madelyn and Miles 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ this is a spicy DARK COLLEGE romance and dark doesn’t even begin to describe it!
After escaping her abusive past, Madelyn thinks she has left that horrid life behind. But a stalker has claimed and and won’t let anyone get in the way. Even the tattooed Miles.
Miles falls mad for Madelyn instantly and is determined to keep her safe at all costs… but will that be enough?
Mortala has everything you would want… SPICE (holy hell does it have spice), another book boyfriend to add to your list, and a shocking twist ending that will leave you gagged!!
This was amazing from start to finish, I simply INHALED it.
Miles is dreamy mcdreamy and I adore him. I don’t think we had enough of him honestly 💁🏻♀️😂 his complexity and just his love for Mads? Yes.
Madelyn, Mads, baby cakes. I love her. Everything about her. She’s not just some damsel in distress but she also has soft spots. She’s a fantastic FMC.
My only comment is wanting to know how the pills ended. What happened with that? (No spoilers so no more info here lol)
Otherwise 10/10 read for a debut. Will be reading more. 👏🏼
What can I say besides delicious?? We meet Madelyn getting out of a not great situation she has been stuck in and see the moment that truly molds her before she escapes to a new life. She’s escaped her past only to meet our main man Miles. And ladies.. Miles is DIVINE! The mouth on this man. 🥵 He’s the new book boyfriend. The praise, the dirty talk, the forehead kisses and he will protect her with his life. say less! It’s a mystery and suspenseful and everything you could want in a dark romance. Enjoy our new book boyfriend! He won’t disappoint!
4 stars 🌟 I stayed up super late to finish this book 😆 this book was really good, it kept me entertained! Had me on my edge of my seat, wanting to know what was happening, who was behind all of it. Definitely surprised me at the end! The connection between the two main characters was so good. I felt bad for Madelyn, poor girl couldn't catch a break. I loved Miles, completely obsessed! I loved how protective he was 🖤 Thank you so much for letting me read an ARC! I enjoyed it!
“I can’t help but to stand there like a f*cking creep and just watch her. I don’t care. I’ll always be a creep for her.”
So excited that I was able to read Lizz’s debut novel! This was the perfect mix of suspense, romance, with a touch of horror. Madelyn has quite the past that she is running from, and Miles simply needs to know more. The mystery and suspense had me turning pages well into the early hours of the morning. I’m excited to see what Lizz comes up with next!
🅣🅡🅞🅟🅔🅢 College romance Touch her and ☠️ Secret past V MFC Stalker (not MMC) Revenge
This was a dark, spicy, super spicy, college romance with kidnapping, stalking, and revenge sex. The chemistry between Miles and Madelyn was amazing. The way Miles was obsesseddddd with Madelyn, ooo 🥵 and the way he made sure she was safe! Definitely recommend this if you’re into stalking dark romance!
“You have the ability to fully fucking ruin me princess. I would let you shatter me into a million pieces if it meant making you happy.”
I went into this book blind and was pleasantly surprised. This was a quick and entertaining read for those who love a little stalking/suspense in their reads. There were a lot of elements in the book where I didn’t see events coming and left me wanting to cry lol Miles was instantly OBSESSED with Maddie and would do any and everything to ensure she was safe. There were a few areas where it felt a little repetitive, but it didn’t take away from the story and it was still a fun read!
I loved this book! It was so so good! Omg and that plot twist! I had an idea but I was like hmm.. maybe not? But omg this book is so good! I hope that we see these characters again somewhere !
The MMC is whipped for his girl, there is a lot of emotional shit that happens . But you will NOT want to stop reading this it is phenomenal thank you for this book!
This book was amazing! The characters, their backgrounds, the settings, the plot twists, the storyline. It was all amazing. I had my suspicions on who it was, but there were twists that I didn't even see coming. Miles is SO in love with Madelyn, right from the beginning he just wanted to protect her. And protect her he did.
