Tales from the Finnish Forests

Rate this book
Step into the enchanted world of Finnish mythology, where the winds sing of creation, the forests hum with ancient secrets, and the seas roar with the fury of gods. Discover Ilmarinen, the master smith, forging the heavens and the Sampo, a mill of endless fortune. Witness Ilmatar’s longing transform the void into earth, sky, and stars from the fragments of seven cosmic eggs before she births Väinämöinen, the eternal sage. Venture into the depths where Iku-Turso, the monstrous sea guardian, rises to challenge heroes, his wrath shaping the destiny of those who dare defy him.

Walk through the sacred groves where Hiisi, the spirit of hills and stones, moves the very earth with his power, and hear the hiss of serpents born of Syöjätär’s chaotic spit and Hiisi’s ancient magic. Feel the tension as Louhi, the Lady of the North, calls on dark forces to guard the mythical Sampo, and follow Väinämöinen as he outwits death and fate with his wisdom and song. From the graceful air goddess Annikki, who haunts dreams as the goddess of nightmares, to Hittavainen, the elusive god of hare-hunting, these stories weave together the myths of a land both untamed and eternal.

This collection immerses readers in a rich tapestry of creation, betrayal, triumph, and wonder. Through vivid storytelling, the spirits and gods of Finnish mythology take shape, their passions reflected in the natural world they inhabit. With every story, new corners of Finland’s mythic landscape come to life, from the shimmer of celestial light to the depths of dark waters. These tales promise a journey into a past where every being, stone, and shadow breathes with magic.

Excellent anthology! Contains a good smattering of Finnish myths and legends, illustrating their cultural emphasis on the balance between man and nature, and the respect they needed for nature living in such a harsh environment. In addition to tales of the sampo and others, it contains Finland's Cinderella version. If you're interested in the frozen north, this is a volume for you!

I loved this translation of Finnish myths and legends. From my studies in the Finnish language, the names made more sense to me, and made it easier to follow the tales. The stories all place emphasis on the balance of life, and explain the deeply rooted appreciation Finns have for nature. It was easy to see and appreciate the connections Tolkien’s world has to Finnish myths.
