Make You Mine is the second story in Nora Everly’s Honeybrook Hollow series. It’s a steamy romantic comedy set in a fictional small mountain town in Oregon with over-35 main characters. The hero was a side character in From the Heart, which was the third book in the Sweetbriar Mountain series, and the heroine was the half-sister of the heroine in . Next to You. While Make You Mine can be read as a stand-alone, the many side characters are confusing if it’s not read after both Next to You and From the Heart.
42-year-old Ren Moretti was introduced in From the Heart as the hero, Jake’s older brother. Ren has been widowed for three years and has recently moved from Portland to Honeybrook Hollow. He was a high-powered divorce attorney but has returned to his hometown to work at his brother’s small law firm. He’s also fundraising for a charity he established, Lyla’s Place, to help abused women in honor of his mother. He has a very strong but hidden hero complex even though the world thinks he’s a tough-as-nails attorney.
Jake Moretti’s wife, Violet, owns a popular coffee shop. Her lifelong best friend is Piper Darlington, a talented baker who recently broke up with her boyfriend, Richard. Apparently, Richard was cheating on Piper with another woman in their friend group, Dana, who is also Piper’s business partner. Now Piper and her sisters are calling Richard “Dick”. Piper and Dick are wrangling over Cody, a gorgeous Golden Retriever that they adopted together.
Piper’s older sister is Paige, a bitter divorcee who owns the local bar, recently renamed Twilight Tavern. Paige’s husband, Eli, cheated on her and abandoned her and their three teen-age children. Paige suggests that Piper and Ren fake-date so that Dick will back off and Ren can focus on courting donors instead of discouraging eligible women at the charity fundraisers.
Piper and Ren quickly decide that the fake-dating plan is a good one, since Piper is too scared to enter into a new relationship right now. At age 38, she has a very tender heart and has been a doormat for too long. Meanwhile Ren is very attracted to Piper, having noticed her at community and family gatherings over the past few years. They kiss as part of their act, and keep kissing, and begin a genuine friendship before having sex. Ren definitely wants to have a real, permanent relationship with Piper, but she’s scared because Ren is TOO perfect.
I enjoyed reading Make You Mine because of its steamy sweetness and the over-35 characters. Both Piper and Ren are wonderful, realistic characters who the reader will engage with. There are many humorous scenes with friends and relatives throughout the story. The reader will be hooked by the Dick-Dana threat, wondering what they are up to. Make You Mine is a sweet romance with a few steamy romantic scenes that is a perfect beach read. Now I’m hoping that ride-or-die protective older sister Paige will get her happy ending in By Your Side, the next story in the Honeybrook Hollow series!
