Mr. Darcy's Black Magic: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Mr. Darcy has the rarest form of magic, black magic. The magical fog he wields can invade the mind of any living creature and force it to do Mr. Darcy’s bidding. He doesn’t like his magic, nor does anyone else. Most of society considers it fundamentally evil. Mr. Darcy’s wealth and status make up for it at least partially, so that he is still welcomed in most places, but he is not particularly sought after among the ton.

When Mr. Darcy travels to Hertfordshire with his friend, Mr. Bingley, and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, all three gentlemen find ladies there that capture their hearts. But love’s course does not run smoothly for any of them.

Miss Elizabeth Bennet despises black magic with a passion, so much so that she even declines to dance with Mr. Darcy when he asks her at the local assembly. It isn’t long, however, before Elizabeth begins to be attracted to him against her will.

As she comes to know Mr. Darcy better, can she ever learn to accept his black magic as well?

A magical take, but with not much magic

Darcy's black magic may get in the way of winning his love.

There is a lot of role reversal from Canon, which was well done, in subtle ways.

The magic is secondary, to create the new setup between our dear characters.

Enjoyable, but for some reason the reader feels distant from the happenings. We follow along what they experience, but I didn't emotionally invested in hose experiences.

I love magic variations

This one is wonderful, sweet and almost angst free. I liked the notion of different colors of magic, and that Elizabeth's and Darcy's worked so well together. A perfect story to end a nice day.

Wonderful cover, and wonderful story

In a world where a small percentage of people have magic, and the magic is clearly defined by color, Darcy's marital eligibility is impaired because he has rare black magic, which can control living beings. Elizabeth, who has blue healing magic, is strongly attracted to Darcy, but feels anyone with black magic can't be trusted. Darcy falls quickly in love with Elizabeth, but has to overcome her prejudices.

The book cover alone made me want to read this book, and I'm glad I did. The romance is lovely, and ODC are not the only ones. The angst level is low. The only villain is Caroline Bingley, and she's not very effective. I like that Jane has more sense and backbone, and that the Bennetts aren't cartoonishly silly. The magic use in the story is minimal, and doesn't get ridiculous.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a mystical, magical, romantic, and engaging story.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is book four of four of the “Pride, Prejudice, And A Bit Of Magic” series. Each book is a standalone story.

Mr Darcy has the rarest form of magic, black magic. The magical fog he wields can invade the mind of any living creature and force it to do Mr Darcy’s bidding. He doesn’t like his magic, nor does anyone else. Most of society considers it fundamentally evil. Mr Darcy’s wealth and status make up for it at least partially, so that he is still welcomed in most places, but he is not particularly sought after among the ton.

When Mr Darcy travels to Hertfordshire with his friend, Mr Bingley, and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, all three gentlemen find ladies there that capture their hearts, but love’s course does not run smoothly for any of them. Miss Elizabeth Bennet despises black magic with a passion, so much so that she even declines to dance with Mr Darcy when he asks her at the local assembly. It isn’t long, however, before Elizabeth begins to be attracted to him against her will.

As she comes to know Mr Darcy better, can she ever learn to accept his black magic as well? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

4.5*. I enjoy all the ways that this author has come up with for different kinds of magic. I would have liked to see the aspects of black magic in more detail, but it wasn't really important to the story.

What I liked: The romance between Colonel Fitzwilliam and Charlotte Lucas was nice, and of course, it was fortunate for them that he was willed an estate from a good army buddy whose life he had saved. I liked the way the different magics were described, and I liked most all the characters. I liked that there was no Mr. Collins or Lady Catherine, and very little of Mr. Wickham (though see below).

What was missing/unlikeable: There were a few loose ends. (trying not to be too much of a spoiler here) Miss Bingley did something with her magic, trying to cause trouble for Elizabeth, but that is never followed up on, it is just dropped, which is a big hole IMO - it is a serious thing that she did. Darcy's valet saw her go into his room, but then nothing came of any of that. We also do not know what happens with Wickham; did he join the militia, did Darcy and the colonel do anything about him or not?

I also felt that the romance between ODC could have been stronger. The first book in the series, Magical, was the most romantic to me. It also had more information about how the magic actually worked - maybe that's the geek in me that wants to see the "magical logic", haha.

I recommend this book!

Magical colours

I enjoy reading stories from EB and this includes a magical scenario with a difference. Each magical person has a gift of a particular colour from the five represented, not just black and white, though there is a catch - if it's not used enough it will cause the person illness even leading to death. No mention of Mr C apart from his being the heir they've never met or Lady C. Caroline and Wickham don't cause too much trouble. Mrs Bennet not portrayed badly even the younger girls don't play too big a part. Elizabeth and Darcy always come together as we know but it's Elizabeth who has to understand her heart. Jane has more of a better understanding of people around her, including Mr Bingley and makes a stand. I can recommend this story.

Very Enjoyable!

I found this to be a great bit of light reading. I enjoyed the concept and the execution. The story is quite captivating in every way. I like that it is zero angst, that Darcy doesn't start off with the usual insult, and that Lydia doesn't have her elopement until only Kitty is left at home. It was a great touch that she was seemingly married without anyone needing to buy responsibility for her.

3.5* rounded up.
This novella offers a swift and unique take on fantasy, where one's magic is distinguished through colour. Not everyone has magical powers. Elizabeth has a beneficial blue type of magic, yet she is emphatically against anyone who wields black magic. She nonsensically rebuffs a gentle and kind Darcy with the canon Darcy behaviours. Colonel Fitzwilliam and his lady's storyline is prominent. I found the story enjoyable.

Entertaining variation. Light reading, low angst with some modern language not used in time period. Darcy wasn't his strong, restrained self, but a milder version. Although the book title leads you to believe it is a magical variation, it is not. It is strictly a romance with some magical traits thrown in as part of their personality. Overall, enjoyable.

Fun little romp

Magic isn't really my thing with Austen variations but this was a quick read with some nifty twists. It starts off with Huntley asking his friend to come to Hertfordshire with him and Colonel Fits William comes along. Of course love happens with a little angst which is easily repaired.

Unlikeable Elizabeth and truly idiotic Darcy. Elizabeth won't marry Darcy, but is attracted to him and leads him on as well, only to blame his black magic and reject him. To this, Darcy decides to stop using his magic, which slowly kills him, essentially trying to commit suicide. I have no respect for either of them

I did not think that I would like this as much as I did. But the magic was really just a proxy and a means to soften Darcy and harden Lizzy implacable prejudices that in the end caused far more harm than her imagination attributed on all black mages. That's what happens when one is young, overly confident in their views which neatly divide the world into black and white based on nothing but navel gazing.

A different take

Magic works a little differently here. Darcy has a rare dark gift that makes him considerably less appealing to many, resulting in a nicer character. Elizabeth is the one whose prejudices must be surmounted. Being herself, it takes awhile.

Unlikable Elizabeth

This was a good book, but I can't stop disliking Elizabeth. Elizabeth was written as an irrational, willfully ignorant, and total selfish female. The book would have been great if it weren't for her.

Satisfying Story

This was a sweet variation of ODC. Just enough angst for the length of the story. A good evening’s read.

interesting

A rather interesting magical world in this variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by Elaine Burkett. I enjoyed it.

I was very entertained by this book. It is well written in a simple, clear way, unburdened by all the "manners" and angst which can make a story become tedious. Plus, the cover is super!

I always enjoy a P&P variation with a little bit of magic. In this version, Lizzy is the one who insults Mr Darcy at the assembly, and has to overcome her aversion to his black magic.

I enjoyed this...

I enjoyed this short story. The theme flowed fluently. Just enough angst to give you understanding. I was happy Darcy didn't give up... on both counts.
