الكافر
يلتقي تاجرُ اللؤلؤ «تشارلي» بأحد أفراد طاقم السفينة التي يُبحر على متنها، يُدعى «أوتوأو»، وسطَ إعصارٍ جارف في المحيط الهادي، ويَنجوان معًا من تحطُّم السفينة الشراعية التي كانت تُقلهما. ومع مرور الوقت، يُصبحان صديقَين وتتوطَّد علاقتُهما على مَر ١٧ عامًا على الرغم من اختلافهما في المعتقدات الدينية؛ ﻓ «أوتوأو» كافر بكل الأديان. وتتلاحقُ الأحداثُ حتى يتجلَّى التأثيرُ الإيجابي المدهش الذي أحدثَه «أوتوأو» في حياة صديقه. تتطرَّق القصةُ إلى معاني الوفاء والصداقة، وتُبرِز الإيثار الذي يرتقي به الصديق إلى منزلةٍ ربما تفوق منزلة الشقيق.

Nunca tinha lido Jack London até hoje porque as aventuras não estão entre os géneros literários que procuro, como tal, fiquei surpreendida pela lição de amizade que é “O Pagão”. Charley é um mercador de pérolas que, depois de um acto de bondade aquando de um naufrágio na zona da Polinésia, ganha um amigo para a vida, Otoo. Durante 17 anos, este negro do Bora Bora torna-se ama-seca, braço direito, conselheiro e companheiro inseparável do aventureiro Charley.

صداقة نادرة وطريقة سرد تجعل القاريء وكأنه يتحرك في وسط القصة ويرى سمك القرش، لم إعرف أحدا بهذا الوفاء في حياتي كلها، ولا أعرف لما اسماه الكاتب بالكافر وهو يبذل الخير بكل قدراته.

In the end, Otoo saved my life; for I came to lying on the beach twenty feet from the water,
sheltered from the sun by a couple of cocoanut leaves. No one but Otoo could have dragged
me there and stuck up the leaves for shade. He was lying beside me. I went off again; and
the next time I came round, it was cool and starry night, and Otoo was pressing a drinking
cocoanut to my lips.
We were the sole survivors of the Petite Jeanne. Captain Oudouse must have succumbed to
exhaustion, for several days later his hatch cover drifted ashore without him. Otoo and I
lived with the natives of the atoll for a week, when we were rescued by the French cruiser
and taken to Tahiti. In the meantime, however, we had performed the ceremony of
exchanging names. In the South Seas such a ceremony binds two men closer together than
blood brothership. The initiative had been mine; and Otoo was rapturously delighted when I
suggested it.
"It is well," he said, in Tahitian. "For we have been mates together for two days on the lips
of Death."
"But death stuttered," I smiled.
"It was a brave deed you did, master," he replied, "and Death was not vile enough to speak."
"Why do you 'master' me?" I demanded, with a show of hurt feelings. "We have exchanged
names. To you I am Otoo. To me you are Charley. And between you and me, forever and
forever, you shall be Charley, and I shall be Otoo. It is the way of the custom. And when we
die, if it does happen that we live again somewhere beyond the stars and the sky, still shall
you be Charley to me, and I Otoo to you."
"Yes, master," he answered, his eyes luminous and soft with joy.
"There you go!" I cried indignantly.
"What does it matter what my lips utter?" he argued. "They are only my lips. But I shall
think Otoo always. Whenever I think of myself, I shall think of you. Whenever men call me

Some spoilers ahead! Beautiful story which is throwing interesting challenge to Christian religious establishment at the beginning of 20th century. Lot of reviewers are going on usual tropes from racism to noble savage but author in his title (title is not "Native" or "Savage" or "Islander" etc) is telling us what he wants to discuss. Looking at life on islands only one who lives immaculate Christian life culminating in (Christ like) sacrifice of his life for the fellow man is Otoo who is refusing to be baptized. Question (which author answers in his own way at the end of story) is: what is more important for salvation of the soul - baptism or proper Christian life?

Honestly when are the 0.5 ratings coming in?? This was a 3.5 * Otoos' dedication was heart warming and i would have liked to read the story from his perspective even though you could already fill in the dots.
It was a good thing i came across the audiobook version because now that I've had a taste of Jack London's writing i am more inclined to pick up White Fang and The Call of The wind that as been on my shelf for a minute.

The Heathen is a short story by Jack London, focusing on the relationship between a western pearl buyer named Charley and a Pacific Islander named Otoo. Their paths first cross when a hurricane destroys the boat they're both working on, leaving them both stranded clutching the same hatch cover. The experience bonds them, and Otoo becomes the ever-present shadow to Charley, helping him to make better choices in both his personal and professional life. A decent read, but a little too much of the "noble savage" trope for me. 5/10

قصة عجيبة بطل القصة يحب التجوال في البحر وقد حدثت لهم حادثة بحرية قوية كادوا أن يفقدون حياتهم ولكنهم بعد أن صاروا في وسط الأمواج بتعاونه مع هذا الشخص الملقب بالكافر نجوا من تلك الأهوال وأصبحوا صديقين لا يفرقهم شي لمدة طويلة حتى كان هذا الصديق هو السبب في انقاذ البطل في أكثر من حادثة وأيضا كان السبب في غناه.

really quite decent. very short. I forgot about the repetitive way he writes. a sort of short sentence burst one after another relaying the same thing or expounding on it. it definitely made me want to revisit a few of his others.

Jack London. Cuenta la historia de una amistad y fidelidad a toda prueba. Dos hombre se conocen en circunstancias desfavorables y afianzan una amistad.
Habla de una sociedad de otro tiempo. Del hombre blanco que es superior al de color. Es interesante saber cómo se pensaba en esos entonces.
