Love scorched the heavens and when it was lost, it turned everything to ashes… He was no hero. He was not one to rescue his loved one by hauling her back from the blazing wreckage of a broken world or by fighting a war to win her hand. But he was sweet and sensitive. And loved. Fiercely. By his wife and the dancing girl. They loved him and lost him in turns. But to the bitter end, they went on loving him. Swept away on the tides of breathtaking passion and delicious desire, Kannagi, the wife, and Madhavi, the dancing girl, find themselves plummeting to the unforgiving depths of love and despair, armed only with futile hope and the bleakly dawning realization that exquisite pleasure must be paid for with endless pain. This is the story of two women and the love triangle destiny enmeshed them in which spawned an epic saga that has lasted centuries. Inspired by the Silapathikaram, Ilango Adigal’s timeless Tamil classic, Anuja Chandramouli’s bold new take delivers a double dose of romance that is unforgettably tender and unrelentingly tragic.

I don't know what I expected from the book, believing it to be a regular historical fic with an amorous rivalry, but the end had me shudder with disbelief😳
The book starts with anguish, as the two titular ladies grieve the loss of their beloved in the first couple of chapters.
The story is set in the opulent Southern peninsula of India, in a jolly port city of Puhar, where 2 merchant princes decide to marry off their children Kovalan & Kannagi. Kannagi, the shy, sweet & ever so quiet girl, is infatuated with him since childhood and can't wait to tie the knot when they come of age. Much to her practical mother's chagrin, she weaves this innocent dream of a love filled marriage that would last a lifetime of happiness.
In another corner of the city, born in the lap of glamour & luxury, is Madhavi who is destined to be 'the dancing girl'. Raised by a shrewd Paati (granny) and a bitter & greedy mother Chittu, Madhavi tries to replace the ugliness of their life with dance, which is her solace, her meditation. Blessed with extraordinary talent & beauty, she holds a promise to achieve greatness in her artform.
Kannagi's dream of a blissful married life gets shattered as she can't reciprocate the intimacy sought by her husband, busying herself with other wifely duties except those of the flesh. In a grand public debut that mesmerized the entire city, Kovalan gets enthralled by the charisma of Madhavi, leaving his family to start a life of passion with her, bringing forth a daughter amidst music & excessiveness.
Soon, his riches run dry & Chittu tries to drive a wedge between the lovers, but not until Madhavi's elicit fling does he regain his senses and returns back to his still-devout wife.
Together, they embark on a perilous journey to start life afresh in the Madurai, the City of Nectar, only to find themselves thrown headfirst into intense drama, bloodshed and revengeful events that changed the entire course of history.

"The Wife & The Dancing Girl" follows the intertwined lives of Kannagi, Madhavi, and Kovalan in a love triangle. Kovalan who is married to Kannagi becomes infatuated with a Dancer girl, Madhavi. Then we have Kannagi, despite her heartbreak remains devoted to her husband. The exploration of love, fate, societal norms for women, and social inequality is depicted well.
The characters are written beautifully and evoke emotions within us for what they are going through. The writing is nothing less than poetic. What I loved the most was Kannagi’s transformation from a submissive wife to a powerful force of vengeance. Her suffering while Kovalan was away brought me to tears.
If you love reading emotional and thought-provoking historical fiction books this one is a must-read for its amazing narrative and beautiful characters.
Anuja Chandramouli’s The Wife and the Dancing Girl carries such grace, confidence, and depth that you would expect from a seasoned storyteller. Drawing inspiration from the timeless tale of Silappadikaram, Chandramouli reimagines and breathes life into the story of Kannagi, her husband Kovalan, and the enchanting dancing girl, Madhavi.
At its heart, this is the story of Kannagi — a woman deeply in love with her husband and wholly devoted to him, embodying all that is expected of a wife. Her world, however, is shaken by the arrival of Madhavi, the alluring dancer who not only claims Kovalan’s love but also shifts the dynamics of their lives forever. What unfolds is a poignant love triangle — one that is not simply about passion, betrayal, or jealousy, but also about the stark realities of women’s lives, their sacrifices, and the invisible weight of the roles they are forced to play.
The characters are intricately drawn. Kannagi’s devotion, Kovalan’s restless desires, and Madhavi’s charm are so vividly portrayed that the story plays out like a film before your eyes. The details are lush and immersive, yet never overbearing. Chandramouli captures the dramatic highs and the crushing lows with such finesse that every emotion feels raw and real.
Beyond the personal story of love and heartbreak, the book holds up a mirror to the larger issues of inequality, the burdens women are made to carry, and the social norms that should never have been norms in the first place. It explores love — in its purity and in its exploitation — with honesty and courage.
The writing is dramatic and lyrical, but never indulgent. Chandramouli’s narrative builds an emotional storm that sweeps you in and refuses to let go. By the end, the book leaves you heartbroken, contemplative, and perhaps even tearful.
The Wife and the Dancing Girl is nothing short of remarkable. It is powerful, emotional, and deeply humane — a story that lingers long after the last page is turned.
Anuja Chandramouli’s The Wife & The Dancing Girl reimagines the epic tale of Silapathikaram, diving deep into the tumultuous love triangle between Kannagi, Madhavi, and Kovalan. The story unfolds in Puhar, a vibrant port city, where Kannagi, the epitome of wifely devotion, and Madhavi, the captivating dancing girl, find their lives inextricably linked by their shared love for Kovalan. The book explores the destructive power of love, depicting how it can both elevate and shatter, leaving behind a trail of ashes. The emotional depth of the characters, particularly Kannagi’s transformation from a heartbroken wife to a force of vengeance, is a testament to Chandramouli’s skill in portraying human emotions.
The book’s core strength lies in its exploration of love’s multifaceted nature, from its tender beginnings to its devastating consequences. The narrative delves into the societal constraints placed on women, particularly in a patriarchal world, and the sacrifices they make in the name of love. Chandramouli skillfully weaves themes of passion, desire, and the painful consequences of choices, creating a story that is both romantic and tragic. The story’s setting in ancient India, with its rich cultural backdrop, adds depth and authenticity to the narrative.
Chandramouli’s writing style, characterized by its poetic and evocative language, elevates the story beyond a simple retelling of a classic tale. The book effectively captures the essence of the original epic, while offering a fresh perspective on the characters and their motivations. The blend of romance, political intrigue, and historical detail makes The Wife & The Dancing Girl a compelling read for those who enjoy stories that delve into the complexities of human relationships and the enduring power of love.
Anuja Chandramouli breathes fresh life into the timeless epic "Silapathikaram" with her poignant retelling, "the wife the dancing girl". The book explores the intertwined fates of Kannagi, the devoted wife, and Madhavi, the enchanting courtesan, as they navigate love, betrayal, and loss in a world shaped by passion and despair.
Kannagi’s fierce loyalty and Madhavi’s enigmatic allure form the heart of a love triangle with Kovalan, a man deeply flawed yet achingly human. Her portrayal of these characters is nuanced, with raw emotions and moral complexities that make them leap off the page. The narrative is as lyrical as it is heart-wrenching, capturing the soaring highs of passion and the devastating lows of heartbreak with poetic grace.
The author delves into timeless themes love, fidelity, desire, and fate while questioning societal norms and the price of love. The prose is lush and evocative, transporting readers to an ancient world that feels both distant and deeply resonant.
However, the unrelenting tragedy might feel overwhelming to some, and the intense focus on emotions occasionally overshadows the pacing of the plot. Yet, these are minor quibbles in a tale that beautifully balances romance and despair.
In conclusion, it is a mesmerizing tribute to one of Tamil literature’s greatest works, blending mythology with modern sensibilities. A must-read for lovers of epic tales and tragic romances.
"It would be a cautionary tale on the perils of loving too much. It would dwell largely on the importance of being virtuous to a fault because it suits everyone else. It would hammer home the merits of choosing sanctity and sacrifice over satisfaction, which is mostly a fool's move."
"She promised to take care of Manimegalai and make sure she made something of her life as long as it did not involve dancing to the whims of others."
" I was no longer afraid. Of being alone and unloved. Especially since I realized that after everything I had been through, aloneness was not the worst thing to happen to me."
A modern retelling of the Silapathigaaram that made me empathize with every character and made me indulge deep into their desires and dreams, sorrows and sadnesses while making me root for all of them all at once.
The Wife and the Dancing Girl by Anuja Chandramouli is a remarkable adaptation of the ancient Tamil epic Silapathikaram. The writing is superb, capturing the essence of the original and keeping readers engaged till the last page. The characters are beautifully crafted, each with depth and complexity that bring the story to life. If you have an affinity for Tamil literature and historical fiction, this book is a must-read. The author's storytelling is both powerful and poignant, making it easy to connect with the narrative and its emotions. This engaging novel is a testament to the author's ability to breathe new life into timeless tales. It’s a compelling read that honors the rich tradition of Tamil literature while offering a fresh perspective.
Rarely do I come across a book that stirs my soul as much as The Wife and the Dancing Girl. Kannagi and Madhavi’s intertwined fates kept me hooked, and their distinct voices brought a raw authenticity to the story.
The emotional rollercoaster of love and loss was both heartbreaking and beautiful. The cultural and historical elements of the narrative added a richness that transported me to ancient Puhar.
This book is a poignant reminder of how exquisite pleasure often comes at a painful cost. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone!
What moved me most about this book was Kannagi's internal struggle. The scene where she's preparing Kovalan's favorite chenai kizhangu while he talks about Madurai is so powerful in its simplicity. I could feel her trying to hold onto hope while dealing with her fears. The way the author describes small domestic moments but fills them with such deep meaning is masterful. The contrast between Kovalan's excited chatter about the city and Kannagi's quiet concerns broke my heart.
I love reading retellings of Indian mythology and literature. Silapathikaram was a very frustrating piece of literature and I had always failed to understand Kannagi's love for Kovalan. This book was beautifully written in Kannagi's and Madhavi's perspectives. I wish there were chapters from Kovalan's perspective as well. Definitely look forward to reading more books by this author!
The Dancing Girl is a deeply emotional story of love, loss, and longing. Centered around a tragic love triangle, it follows Kannagi and Madhavi as they love the same man in very different ways.
The writing is lush and intense, filled with passion and quiet heartbreak. Inspired by Silapathikaram, the novel leans heavily into romance and tragedy, reminding us that love can be both exquisite and devastating at the same time.

My 💭: [18/1/25 2.59 PM]
MY GOD THIS BOOK! I am speechless and have been so since the past 12 hours after finishing the book. Omg omg omg. Author, you really created magic with this story 😍✨
I am always a bit cautious when it comes to literary fiction or historical fiction and it takes me some extra time generally to really grasp the book's soul. But this book, omg, I'm not exaggerating one bit, got me addicted within the first 2 chapters. There's something so lyrical and beautiful and addictive about the author's monologue writing style that got me hooked, and I couldn't stop reading till I finished it late night, blowing off office meetings and work. Some parts even got me breathless and exhilarated about what's going to happen next. All this from a historical literary fiction, can you guys imagine?!
So, if you are entertained and interested in human emotions and their diabolical yet confusing actions, you are going to love this book. At first, after reading the blurb, I thought Kannagi and Madhavi were the same person for some reason, but they are not. Kannagi is the wife - the utter epitome of feminine grace and dignity. And Madhavi is the dancing girl - the symbol of passion and fire and desire. I felt like they represented 2 sides of a woman because let's be honest girls, we all have shades of golds and reds inside us. Both of them earned my respect and inspiration in their own ways and honestly, this book is a 5 star read just because of them. Though both headstrong women, when it came to Kovalan, both lost their wits and were women MADLY in love. No, seriously, clinical insanity almost 🤯. For Kannagi, he, her husband, was the synonym of love and everything a 'happy ending' symbolises. Weirdly, same for Madhavi as well, except she was his mistress. This love for Kovalan was the lone thread between these 2 women from opposite sides of the society. Frankly speaking, I did not understand their love. How can love be this selfless when the man has done what Kovalan did? At least Madhavi somewhat got over him, but Kannagi, omg, I could not believe she did what she did for him. HIM! Her actions made me introspect A LOT about what I know about love and belief.
The main plot of the story is love. Mad love. It drives the plot in such a demanding way that you won't mind that the story is JUST about love. Although there are a lot of twists and action happening in the end, but it was the initial building chapters for me. And exasperation at men, UGH. I get SO ANGRY realising that we have all been living in a man's world and women shaped their whole lives around men's interests. So, at any point, if you start feeling angry at Madhavi, pause a bit and think from her perspective as well and the world she was living in. And tbh, I was happy with what happened to Kovalan.
Do I still need to say that this is a must read book? 💯
When I first picked up The Wife & The Dancing Girl by Anuja Chandramouli, I assumed it would be a straightforward story about a woman—perhaps a wife who loves to dance. But just a few pages in, I realized it was something much deeper, much more layered. The story revolves around three central characters: the man ( Kovalan ), the wife (Kannagi), and the dancing girl (Madhavi). My immediate thought? Oh no, a cheating trope—I'm going to hate this. But I was so wrong.
The author does something remarkable with this narrative. She doesn’t just give us a tale of betrayal; she gives us pain, complexity, and humanity in its rawest form. As the story unfolded, I couldn’t help but feel heartbroken for both Kannagi and Madhavi. Kannagi, the devoted and dignified wife, is betrayed by the man she loves and trusts. And Madhavi, the so-called "other woman"? She isn't a villain—she’s a victim in her own right, carrying trauma and longing that make her achingly real.
The only character I found impossible to sympathize with was the man himself, Kovalan —confused, selfish, and weak. Despite having a loyal, loving wife, he strays, dragging two women into his own mess of indecision. But author doesn't let this be a one-dimensional story. Instead, she explores grief, identity, cultural expectations, and emotional devastation with stunning depth.
What elevates this book even further is its blend of mythology and a hint of fantasy. The author draws from epic tales and classical inspiration, adding a rich backdrop to the very human emotions at play. The story moves between themes of love and betrayal, grief and strength, ultimately culminating in an ending that feels both satisfying and powerful.
And beyond all of this, the book powerfully highlights how women have been treated for ages—revered, judged, controlled, silenced—and how dangerous it could be if that continues. It’s not just a story; it’s a reflection of reality and a quiet warning. Yet, it’s also incredibly empowering. Both Kannagi and Madhavi embody strength in different ways, and their journeys remind us of the resilience women carry, even when the world tries to break them.
By the final page, I was deeply moved. I couldn’t stop thinking about Kannagi and Madhavi. This isn’t just a story about a man who cheats; it’s about women who rise, survive, and reclaim their narratives.
If you're looking for a story with emotional depth, cultural richness, and characters that stay with you—read this book. At least once. You won’t regret it.
Anuja Chandramouli’s The Wife and the Dancing Girl is a beautiful retelling of the ancient Tamil epic Silapathikaram. What I loved most is how she keeps the grandeur of an epic alive while making it feel deeply personal and relatable.
At the center of the story is a man who is not a hero in the usual sense. He is fragile, flawed, and yet loved so fiercely by two women. Kannagi, the wife who stands strong beside him, and Madhavi, the enchanting dancing girl who shares his passion and destiny. Their lives come together in a story that is both tender and tragic.
The writing is evocative but never heavy. It flows in a way that pulls you in and makes you feel the emotions so closely. Every character has depth, every relationship feels layered, and the struggles and choices stay with you long after you finish reading.
The characters are written with such clarity that there is no confusion about their emotions or choices. Yet when you look closer, you realize society has been repeating the same patterns for centuries, especially for women. It feels like a ritual, woven into every generation, reminding you how little has really changed.
What also stayed with me is how the author quietly puts forward problems that still exist in today’s society. Beyond the obvious cruelties like punishing or silencing women in the name of virtue, there are subtler truths that cut even deeper. The upbringing of both women is one such detail. From childhood, they are shaped by layers of duplicity and hypocrisy, raised to see themselves through the eyes of men, whether as the ideal wife or the desirable dancing girl. This is not only emotional but physical, embedded into their very being. And as the story moves, you feel their constant inner battle with these invisible rules.
The most unforgettable part for me was Kannagi’s rage on learning of her husband’s death. It is not written as a passing outburst but as something raw, powerful, and inevitable. Her fury consumes a city. It feels like Chandramouli is leaving a danger sign glowing for all of us. Do not mistake a woman’s silence for weakness, because rage that has been bottled up for generations can burn everything in its path.
The book blends love, betrayal, and redemption into something timeless yet new. It honors Tamil heritage while also speaking to emotions we can all relate to . Desire, heartbreak, resilience. For me, it felt like a fresh breath given to an old story and at the same time a tribute to the richness of Tamil literature.
// Felt like I read a BOOK after a long time... .... ✨ It's been over a month now that I finished reading this book yet I don't know what to say about it. Just like you after seeing it's title I understood that it's gonna be a love-triangle where there would be suffering, love, longing, distance and everything. But this book was so much more...The most surprising part for me was it's not just the story, a major part of the story is actually an epic in Tamil. Can you believe it!!
✨ The story revolves majorly around 3 characters - Kannagi, Kovalan and Madhavi. The story is simple yet complicated. There are not many times where I can't put my feet in the character shoes but this book was one of them. At times I felt Kannagi is dumb, at times(major part) I felt Kovalan is selfish and at times I felt Madhavi is self-centred.
✨ It was a one of its kind read for me. I never read something like this. Something which made me fall in love with a character and hate it at the same time. Something that made me believe in childhood love at the same time I dreaded it.
✨ Reading this book was a very epic experience for me because after years I was reading a mytho-fictional read. The characters weren't all good and positive, they had their flaws but that's what made the book more interesting.
✨ A lover who lost his way, a lover who longed and a lover whose love changed. The story also showed the power of love, how love can destroy the world. This book and story showed almost each colour of love. So as the plot it's a 10/10 read.
✨ Coming to the writing of the author, it was very engaging and connecting. Right from the first page the writing held the attention. There are many lines which felt like they are written with utmost love and longing. So, again kudos for writing.
✨ The story is written with a dual perspective- Madhavi & Kannagi and in those two perspectives the part and parcel of love has been written. The butterflies, the longing, the change, the hate, the obsession, everything!!
✨ A must read for everyone because the story isn't just a story but kind of an epic in Tamil. Particularly if mytho-fiction is your preferred genre then just try this one. It's truly a one of its kind read!
✨ The Wife and The Dancing girl by Anuja Chandrmouli is heartbreaking, romantically strong yet a read that challenges the loyalty in love.
✨ First, The cover attracts like no other,
✨ It creates the whole classic, vintage atmosphere that make you imagine the holy tunes of classical songs, the sounds of ghunghroo, the dancers, those expressions, while the other hand you can feel the longing of a lover, of a devoted wife !
✨ The book revolves around Madhavi and Kannangi - The women poles apart from each other, while one grow with the rhythm of tunes and songs, kanangi - a simple woman daydreaming about her only love !
✨ Both women are being beautiful in their own perspectives and world faces the wrath of being in love with someone who can leave anytime.
✨ Kovalan - an ambitious man, kind, intelligent and loving enough meeting to a dangerous end.
✨ These three standing at the middle of web of love, heartache, loneliness & Betrayal.
✨ Married kovalan & kanangi are happy, kanangi is on nine clouds to find her only dream to be snatched away by a dancing girl.
✨ While Madhavi falling in love with someone who already has someone, but true love is like that isn't it ?
✨ In all the chaos of their love, I really couldn't understand why both women despite being capable of doing everything, destroy themselves while being a devoted lover to konaval who was never a loyal man, but...
✨ After sometimes I realized that that's what love is, that's what love does to you !
✨ Both the women were at fault at some point of time but the rage I felt towards madhavi was immense.
✨ The love they have is full of loneliness, betrayal, disrespectful, unkind but at the same time beautiful journey.
✨ The writing feels like a poetry, I was in the book feeling all those words like in my own head.
✨ The chracter execution of supporting characters were on point, it can be examined how those characters contribute in their love and life.
Inspired by the Epic of Cilappatikāram, this book is a brilliant retelling. I loved how the author brought Kannagi, Kovalan, and Madhavi to life. The writing is phenomenal, as always, by Chandramouli; she has knit her words so tidily that it’s impossible to limit yourself to just a triangle love story without going into the depth of those emotions that are filled with love, desire, and despair and is ready to go to unforgiving depths to live that. This book is about Women's Love.
Kannagi, the virtuous, loyal, and dedicated wife who is head over heels in love with her husband, is wrapped up in the passion of a new marriage; she is setting up her home, trying to conceive but couldn’t. Kovalan, her husband, loves her like it’s breathing, never complains, always present, but one day, he lost his heart to the incredible beauty of Madhavi, the dancing girl. Madhavi, daughter of a dancing girl, set to become one herself, is bold and nonconformist to the rules set for her. When confronted with Kovalan, something in her heart flickers. Kannagi keeps waiting for the return of her husband because she knew, not hope, but knew that he will, and he does.
Kannagi got her husband for the second time, after completely losing him to another woman once, and now her love is stronger, deeper, and gallant. So, when Kovalan is wrongly accused and punished for a crime he didn’t commit, the rage of Kannagi unfolds and burns the city of Madhurai. This book is about how a charming & sensitive man is loved fiercely by two women, where one can go from losing all her finances to another creating havoc on a city; both can go to war for the man they love. That’s what makes it an epic saga for centuries, because when have we heard a story where a man is loved, protected, and desired by two women almost equally and how an unrelentless tragedy unfolds when he was taken away wrongfully from his wife.
Loved every bit of this book, would highly recommend it. Typical English, dense font, but extraordinary writing.
This book is a modern retelling of an ancient Tamil story called Silapathikaram, written by Ilango Adigal. The author takes that old epic and gives it a fresh, romantic twist. The story focuses on love, passion, and heartbreak, making it both exciting and emotional. It's not just a simple romance; it's a tale that explores how love can be beautiful yet painful.
The plot revolves around two strong women, Kannagi and Madhavi, who both fall in love with the same man, Kovalan. Kannagi is Kovalan's devoted wife & Madhavi is a talented dancer. Kovalan is not a perfect hero and his choices lead to trouble. The story shows how their lives get tangled in a love triangle that brings joy and sorrow.
I loved both the characters- Kannagi and Madhavi. Kannagi represents quiet strength and loyalty, while Madhavi is bold, free-spirited, full of charm and allure. Their relationships with Kovalan feel true to life, with ups and downs that will keep the readers hooked. The book switches between their point of view, letting the readers see inside their hearts.
The book talks about love's highs and lows, how passion can lead to despair, and how hope can sometimes feel useless. It's not just a love story; it's about destiny and the choices we make.
What I loved the most about the book- ❤️The story is well-crafted right from the start. I couldn't put it down, and it stayed with me long after I finished. ❤️I found the book thought-provoking, which made me reflect on my own ideas about relationships. ❤️The writing style is captivating, with vivid descriptions that made me feel like I am right there with the characters. ❤️The book is easy-to-read, helped by the glossary at the end that explains Tamil terms and cultural references. ❤️The cover page of the book is marvelous and it immediately caught my attention when I saw it for the first time.
Overall, this book is an absolute gem. It's romantic, sad & inspiring all at once. I highly recommend it to everyone. I absolutely loved it & I am looking forward to read more books from the author in the future❤️
I fell in love with the book's title the moment I saw it, and after reading the blurb, I eagerly wanted to dive into the story. I had previously read the poetry version of Silapathikaram by Ilango Adigal during my undergraduate studies. This ancient Tamil epic tale revolves around love, loss, loyalty, and the power of chastity. While pursuing my post-graduation, I read and finished this book, and I was obsessed with the story. However, I yearned to know more, and the universe seemed to listen to my unspoken words, leading me to this book.
The story of "The Wife and the Dancing Girl" centers around a love triangle between Kannagi, the devoted wife, and Madhavi, the passionate dancing girl, and the man they both love, Kovalan. The book delves into the complexities of love, heartbreak, and loyalty. The author's writing is mesmerizing, weaving a tale that's both poignant and thought-provoking. The characters feel real, and their stories resonated deeply with me.
The book presents the perspectives of both female characters vividly, allowing readers to connect with the story on a deeper level. I loved both perspectives, as I found myself connecting with the characters, their emotions, and feelings, which felt incredibly real. At times, I felt as though I was living inside the book. What struck me most was how the book raises questions about morality, sacrifice, and the consequences of our choices. It's not merely a romantic tale but a commentary on human existence that will leave you pondering long after you finish reading.
Some parts of the book were heart-wrenching, and I felt the characters' pain intensely. Although it took me some time to read the book, I devoured it once I started. I couldn't put it down, and I loved every moment of it. I sincerely hope this book will be included in English literature courses in the future, as it deserves to be read by everyone. Trust me, this book is a must-read for all. It's a story that will touch your heart, make you think, and leave you feeling emotionally drained, in the best possible way.
I must say that I absolutely admired Kannagi's character - her strength, confidence, courage, and devotion were truly inspiring. Despite the challenges she faced, she remained resilient throughout. Every man deserves a partner like her, and I believe every woman should aspire to possess similar courage, albeit with wisdom to know her limits. Kannagi's heart-wrenching story, though an ancient epic, still resonates deeply, and I hope no one has to endure similar hardships in real life. Nevertheless, her character left an indelible mark on me, and I'm in awe of her remarkable spirit.
I'm thrilled to have chosen this book as my first read of 2025. I'm obsessed with this descriptive story of Silapathikaram (The Wife and the Dancing Girl).
Kovalan and she were meant to be together forever....that's what Kannagi believed. But life had something else in store for her. Kannagi, the wife and Kovalan were happily married until Madhavi, the dancing girl, snatched Kovalan from Kannagi. Days passed as Kannagi waited for him to return. Her pain and thwarted hope went on and on. Madhavi on the other hand was very happy with Kovalan. But soon Kovalan lost all his fortune and was dependent on Madhavi's earning. Madhavi's mother tried put some sense into her mind and asked to leave him. But Madhavi was adamant. But it so happens that, one day Madhavi and Kovalan part their ways. Kannagi and Kovalan decide to start afresh and they did. But things took a turn for worse and that was the last time Kannagi saw her husband.
#bookreview Set in the time of Chola Dynasty this is not just another love story as it may seem from the plot but there is so much more to it. It shows one's undying and selfless love for their loved one and to what length they would go to avenge them. Basically it has themes of love, lust, betrayal, redemption. The story very well describes the situation, emotions of both Kannagi and Madhavi and their respective lives. Although at the starting the story goes slow paced and may seem like a common plot but after 200 pages or so it takes a heart pounding twist and thereafter becomes unputdownable. While reading the ending my hand finds a way to my mouth to cover the gasp. One thing i noted is about the Karmic connection with your partner which the book beautifully showcases at the end. Kannagi's character is so powerful. Absolutely loved reading her part. One thing i liked about Madhavi character was that she refused to make her daughter like her. She wanted her daughter to have a better life. Altogether both the characters were well built and made the book memorable.
Inspired by the Tamil classic, Silapathikaram, Anuja Chandramouli's "The Wife and The Dancing Girl" is a heartwrenching tale of unconditional love.
This book was my introduction to the tale of Silapathikaram. Two women hopelessly in love with the same man. Destiny's cruelty meted out to all three of them.
The tale begins with the marriage of Kannagai and Kovalan, the children of two wealthy merchants in Puhar, a seaside town in Chola-ruled Tamil Nadu. While the initial days are blissful for the couple, dark clouds soon loom over their marriage when Kovalan is smitten by Madhavi, an immensely beautiful dancing girl. Over the years, the love between the three ebbs and flows forming the crux of this story.
The author's exquisitely lyrical prose is worth reading. It brought alive the natural beauty and grandeur of Puhar. Moreover, the author accurately captured Kannagi's and Madhavi's emotions through their nuanced internal monologues. I could acutely feel Kannagi's despair on losing her husband to another woman, while I could also experience Madhavi's ecstasy during her dance or when she was with Kovalan.
However, I couldn’t resonate with any of the characters, except Madhavi. I found Kovalan to be a selfish person who deserted his wife because she couldn't enjoy physical intimacy. He deserts Madhavi, too, when he finds out she had dalliance with another man. But hadn’t he done the same?
Yet both the woman are hopelessly in love with him to the detriment of their own self. But as the tale is set in ancient times, their behavior is congruent with the customs of that time.
It is a testament to the author’s writing prowess that I finished the book despite the above reservation. I am glad I persisted since the ending is phenomenal.
If you love a historical romance laced with political intrigue, I recommend this book.
The Wife and the Dancing Girl broke my heart in the best way possible. Anuja Chandramouli has taken the old Tamil classic Silapathikaram and given it a voice that feels so fresh, yet so true to its roots. 🤍
Kannagi, the devoted wife, and Madhavi, the graceful dancing girl, are written so beautifully that you cannot help but feel their emotions as your own. Both women are incredible — one a loyal wife, the other a talented dancer — and yet their lives are tied to Kovalan, who honestly doesn’t deserve either of them. He is not a hero, not even close. Weak, selfish, and easily swayed, he manages to break the hearts of two women who gave him nothing but unconditional love.
If there’s one thing this book proves, it’s that women will love even the most undeserving men — and Kovalan is Exhibit A. Honestly, what a useless fellow. He’s neither a hero nor a man of honor. He abandons Kannagi, the wife who stood by him, for Madhavi, and then ruins her too. In the end, he brings destruction not just to himself but to everyone connected to him. Kovalan didn’t deserve either woman’s love, let alone their loyalty.
Anuja Chandramouli doesn’t sugarcoat Kovalan’s flaws. Instead, she shows us love in its rawest, most tragic form — how women often carry the burden of flawed men, how they give everything and still end up with loss. Kannagi’s strength and Madhavi’s vulnerability shine through every page, and you can’t help but admire them even as you feel their despair.
Kannagi and Madhavi are the true soul of this book — fierce, passionate, heartbroken, yet unshaken in their capacity to love. Their strength is what carries the narrative, not Kovalan’s pathetic choices. Anuja Chandramouli doesn’t glorify him, and thank God for that. Instead, she shines a spotlight on the women, showing how love can both empower and destroy. ❤️🔥
Inspired by Silapathikaram by Ilango Adigal , an epic of Sangam literature , this tale is a mesmerizing journey through the ancient culture of southern India.
The female protagonists of the story are Kannagi and Madhavi , both love the same man , Kovalan. Kannagi is a devoted and loyal wife who has loved Kovalan since childhood while Madhavi is a beautiful dancing girl under the patronage of the royal court. Theirs is a tale of love , loss and longing. Caught in a love triangle , they undergo love as well as heartbreak for the same man.
The tale is full of emotions. The fervour of the love experienced by the characters along with piety and sanctity of their relations makes this tale truly epic. The author has captured the sentiments of these characters beautifully. Both the ups and downs in the life of these characters make this story an emotional whirlwind.
The characters of the story are created perfectly esp both the female leads. Along with them , the love interest is a simple and gentle man who enchants both the ladies with his simplicity. Several side characters with well developed arc help in the world building of the story.
The passionate love story is set in ancient India in the era of Cholas and Cheras. The descriptions of the world and the culture are apt and captivating. From the devadasi tradition to the dancing groups for royal courts to battles and sacrifices etc several aspects have been dealt with in a well researched manner.
The point of views of both the female characters sheds light on the life of the women of those times.
This story succeeds in capturing the essence of the love story as well as the themes of the ancient times. Overall it is a beautiful read which will stay with you even after ending the book.
'The Wife and the Dancing Girl' is an apt retelling of the Tamil classic Silapathikaram. It takes you on the journey of two women, Kannagi, the obedient and loyal wife who has forever loved her husband Kovalan and Madhavi, the dancing girl for whom Kovalan leaves his family and falls head over heels in love. Written in dual perspectives, Anuja Chandramouli's 'The Wife and the Dancing Girl' is an exploration of the tough women's lives and how much their emotions depend on the man in their lives. Chandramouli's representation of Kannagi and Madhavi is a complete contrast between family backgrounds and their response to situations, but marginally, they become the two faces of the same coin. The narrative digs deep into the societal obligations placed on women and the norms of a patriarchal world, the sacrifices they make in the name of love and how a woman's character is judged by the mistakes of a man. I have always admired Anuja's intricate writing. Her ability to portray the characters like they are her muse is commendable. The narrative is rich, poetic and graceful. This is my third book by the author, and clearly, there's nothing that Anuja can't express with the perfect balance of emotions.
'The Wife and the Dancing Girl' is effortlessly the best amalgamation of romance and tragedy with a cultural and historical detailing backdrop that makes this Tamil retelling a masterful and compelling read. This book will surely make you angry with all the characters at different levels, which again sums up how unapologetic yet conscious Chandramouli is when it comes to writing and her research. 'The Wife and the Dancing Girl' is a book that needs to be hyped and read more because of its precision and perfection.
This is not the story of a man torn between two women, but the story of two women whose strength outshines the man they loved.
This book by the author is a powerful retelling of the ancient Tamil classic Silapathikaram, yet it feels startlingly modern in its emotions. At its heart are two unforgettable women - Kannagi, the devoted wife, and Madhavi, the captivating dancer, both bound by their love for Kovalan, a man whose weakness and emotional absence become the axis of their suffering and resilience.
Rather than glorifying Kovalan, the author shifts the focus to the women who carry the weight of his choices. Kannagi’s loyalty and dignity, even in the face of heartbreak, and Madhavi’s passion and artistry make them shine far brighter than the man they both love. Their stories run parallel, different in circumstances but tragically similar in outcome, highlighting how love, when entangled with betrayal, can both wound and transform.
The writing is evocative yet accessible, with prose that flows like poetry without ever losing clarity. The transitions between moments of tenderness, despair, and rage are seamless, making the narrative deeply immersive. The book does not simply retell an epic; it humanizes it, drawing out the personal struggles and societal constraints that remain painfully relevant even today.
Most striking is Kannagi’s raw, unstoppable fury after Kovalan’s death, a reminder that silence is never weakness and that centuries of suppressed grief can erupt with the power to burn empires.
This book is not just a myth retold; it is an ode to resilience, female agency, and the timeless fight against unjust norms. It reminds us that while men may shape stories, it is often women who give them soul.
I was profoundly captivated by the exquisite writing in this book, which effortlessly transports readers to a nostalgic era where life was rich with meaning and beauty. The author’s ability to recreate the charm and essence of olden times is nothing short of remarkable, offering readers an immersive experience that feels both vivid and heartfelt.
The narrative gracefully intertwines the lives of its characters, with the wife embarking on a tender journey of falling in love with her husband as their marriage evolves. In parallel, the story explores the life of the dancing girl, who remains unaware of the profound changes shaping her destiny. This dual perspective adds depth and complexity to the storyline, making it all the more compelling.
One of the book’s greatest strengths lies in its well-crafted characters. Each has a richly detailed backstory and a strong sense of individuality, making them not only relatable but also deeply intriguing. The interplay of their personal struggles and growth keeps readers engaged at every turn. I found the book truly unputdownable—a riveting page-turner that held my attention from the very first page to the last.
Moreover, the storyline is exceptionally engaging, seamlessly paired with masterful character development. The author’s impeccable choice of words and the intricacy with which the characters are portrayed exude a sense of elegance that is rare to find. Every aspect of the book is imbued with sophistication, and I couldn’t help but admire the finesse woven into the narrative. It’s a literary masterpiece that leaves a lasting impression.
⭐ 6 STARS. YES, SIX. Because 5 is just not enough for what this book did to me. This was hands down my favorite read of the month and honestly, one of those rare books that I know I’ll keep going back to again and again. You know that feeling when a story just grabs you and doesn’t let go? Yeah, that was me the entire time.
What made this reading experience even more special was something super personal, when I told my amma I was reading this, she smiled and said she had read the original Tamil version (Silapathikaram) as a kid. That moment was everything to me and I made her tell me the story from her perspective. It felt like I was connecting with a piece of my culture, my roots, and my amma’s childhood – all through these pages.
Now let me tell you about the book – It’s a retelling of the Tamil classic Silapathikaram, but Anuja Chandramouli breathes so much life into it that you don’t feel like you’re reading history. The story is set in ancient Tamil Nadu and revolves around three characters: Kannagi( the wife), Madhavi (the dancing girl) And Kovalan (the man they both love)
What starts as love soon spirals into betrayal, heartbreak, and a tragedy so intense it shakes kingdoms. And trust me when I say this – this book made me feel everything. There were moments when my heart literally hurt for these women.
The writing was soo gorgeous and poetic. I could almost hear the anklets, smell the incense, and feel the heat of that era. It’s one of those books that wraps around you and refuses to let go even after you’ve closed the last page. I’m honestly still thinking about it. Still feeling it. It left me shattered and in awe at the same time.
It is a beautifully crafted reimagining of the ancient Tamil epic Silapathikaram. Set against the rich backdrop of the Chola dynasty, the novel delves deep into the lives of Kannagi, the steadfast and devoted wife, and Madhavi, the alluring and complex courtesan. Through their shared connection to Kovalan, a sensitive and flawed man, Chandramouli explores themes of love, loyalty, betrayal, and redemption.
What sets this novel apart is the meticulous detailing of its characters. Both Kannagi and Madhavi are rendered with depth, making them equally sympathetic and memorable. Their emotions, struggles, and resilience are portrayed so vividly that readers feel immersed in their world. The setting of the Chola dynasty is brought to life through evocative descriptions, making the reader feel transported to its bustling streets, ornate temples, and vibrant cultural milieu.
The plot masterfully intertwines the personal and the epic, balancing tender moments with sweeping drama. Chandramouli's lyrical prose elevates the narrative, capturing the nuances of love and loss with poetic grace. The story retains the essence of the original epic while offering fresh perspectives that resonate with contemporary readers.
This novel is a celebration of storytelling, offering a poignant reflection on human relationships and the timeless nature of emotions. For those who enjoy historical fiction imbued with cultural richness and emotional depth, The Wife and the Dancing Girl is an unmissable read.
It's no surprise I am giving it 5 stars—it’s truly a gem!
