Dealing with the past, praying for the future.

While in Cuiaba, Brazil, Nicholas Charboneau (first met him in No One Left To Tell), is kidnapped from his hotel room. His bodyguard, Jasmine Lee knocked unconscious. A note is left behind - deposit 1 Million in an account by a certain date, or else.

With no one else to turn to, nowhere else to go, her search exhausted and brought to a halt, Jasmine flies back to the U.S., determined to call on Christian Delacorte, who owes her a favor (she had helped Delacorte get Raven back in No One Left To Tell). Raven is not thrilled and Christian has no choice. The shocker - Charboneau is Christian’s biological father, the father Fiona wouldn’t admit to, believing that it was for his own good. Regardless about how he or Raven feels, he does owe Jasmine, and flies back to Brazil with her, leaving Raven behind.

Things escalate; first, Christian is indirectly threatened by police Captain Luis Duarte, an attempted hit-and-run misses him by a hair, a Macumba ritual is left on their hotel suite’s balcony along with a deadly snake. A meeting with the Military police Chief Ricardo Zharan, doesn’t seem to help ease the worry and tension for Christian or Jasmine. A meeting at Genotech Labs on raises their suspisions and Christian wonders even more if his father is involved in the despicable goings on. And just when things get worse, Raven appears at the hotel room door, unable to stay home and wait for Christian. And while together alone, Jasmine is kidnapped herself.

According to Zharan, Captain Duarte is now a wanted man, Jasmine still hasn’t been found, but they believe Nicholas has been located. Desperate, Christian convinces Zharan to let Raven and himself accompany Zharan and his men in the rescue.

Then things turn ugly. Between accusations and firefightes, Jasmine arrives to save Nicholas. But can anyone save her?

Originally, I thought there would be more to this, but I didn’t find that much to the mystery at all. I actually found it uninspired. I think there should have been more suspense, more action during their search for Nicholas. The characters come across as worried about the same things over an over again, the same thoughts over and over again, and it was getting to be a little too much - almost two-dimensional. The sexual innuendoes also should have stopped near the beginning - for someone in love with Nicholas, why would she antagonize Christian like that is beyond me. His son, for crying out loud? Once Nicholas is found, what happens after I thought very predictable. Almost too predictable. I’d have loved to see something else - maybe before they were handcuffed! Maybe a diversion and an escape into the forest…

I thought Raven showing up predictable, the villan almost predictable, the whole Genotech Labs and testing was predictable. I found that there wasn’t enough in the explanation from Dr. Tyson Phillips to satisfy a reader who really likes the forensics side of a mystery of any kind, and the whole ‘threatened to hurt my family if I didn’t cooperate’ from Phillips was, again, predictable.

And while the predictability is plain to see, the action scenes are good, love scenes could have used a little more intensity, the characters could have used a little more work. And while there are descriptions of the characters’ surroundings, they are all basic - they seem to just be thrown in for the reader’s sake. They give you this detached feeling. I’m not one to like that at all, but I think the descriptions might play off of Christian well, if you think of it as him giving you the descriptions - they would go well with his attitude of not wanting to be in Brazil in the first place.

You still don’t know enough of Jasmine to comprehend what she’s done for Charboneau. And if it doesn’t beat all, Christian proposes to Raven on the way home? He promised himself he’d talk with Raven, explain everything and swear to never leave her in the dark, no pun intended. Sorry, but for me, a marriage proposal doesn’t take care of that end. He should have told her everything - start to finish - feelings and all. The proposal would have been all that much more sweeter.

In my opinion, the novel wasn’t a waste of money but not the highest marks either.

It was well written enough to keep me reading, but I don't like reading about drug traffic in other countries.

This was okay. Maybe not having read the first one made a difference, but I don't really think so.

While in Brazil, Nicholas Charboneau is kidnapped from his hotel room. Left in his place is a note from his kidnappers demanding one million dollars in 7 days or else. Jasmine Lee, Charboneau's bodyguard is left unconscious. Upon waking and having no one else to turn to, Jasmine goes back to the U.S. and cashes in on a favor owed by Christian Delacorte, who is actually, to his surprise, Charboneau's son. Raven McKenzie, (Christian's girlfriend) is far from thrilled with Christian's choice to help Jasmine, but she knows that he has little choice in the matter. Upon arriving in Brazil, they face threats from the local police, a bit of danger and constant doubt over their basic instincts. Why would an assassin, a security expert and a cop not trust their gut feelings?!

I thought there would be more to this story, more action, more mystery, but their search for Nicholas seemed to consist of walking around Brazil, (which you are only told is Brazil and will have to imagine what it looks like yourself with the details given), with the characters worried about the same things over and over, to the point of being too much.

Then the story gets predictable. Having said that, the action scenes are good, the love scenes are nowhere near what the cover exclaims(HOT ROMANCE AND COLD SUSPENSE, INTENSE AND SATISFYING) and the surrounds of Brazil, very basic and bland, keeping the reader somewhat detached from the story. The ending was rushed; I think Christian should have come clean about his past like he promised himself before taking the next step.

An exotic setting, beautiful people and an ugly crime all come together for an exciting story. Christian Delacorte was introduced in Jordan Dane’s No One Left To Scream. Christine has started an entirely new life. He has his own successful business and a wonderful relationship with Detective Raven Mackenzie.

When Jasmine Lee arrives at Christian’s door to call in a favor Christian is presented with a decision that is very difficult to make and one that will change his future. Nicholas Charboneau, a powerful figure in Chicago’s underworld, has been abducted in Brazil and Jasmine implores Christian to return to Brazil with her in order to free Nicholas. Jasmine plays her trump card and Christian agrees to help her although Raven is strongly against his traveling to Brazil.

Christian and Jasmine arrive in Brazil and go the same hotel where Charboneau was abducted. They soon receive an unsettling surprise that lets them know for sure they are not wanted in Brazil. It seems no one can be trusted even the police. Christian wonders at times if he can even trust Jasmine.

Trying to find Nicholas Charboneau in a foreign country with no assistance is a goal that is full of danger and roadblocks all along the way. Jordan Dane keeps the reader on pins and needles and throws in some voodoo in the mix. A book that keeps you guessing until the exciting and surprising conclusion and you reach the end.

This is Christian Delacorte's story. We met Christian in No One Left To Tell, he's fallen in love with Chicago homicide detective Raven Mackenzie, but just when he embarks on a new life, his old one comes calling. A mysterious and beautiful assassin called Jasmine Lee barges into his downtown Chicago flat, attempting to collect on an old marker.

She confesses the true identity of his father, a name that his mother has kept secret, and demands for his help to free him who was kidnapped in Brazil. The ransom note gives Christian only ten days to attempt an impossible rescue. Will he risk his future to discover his past?

I really liked No One Lives Forever. There were some parts of the story that left me with my mouth hanging open in shock and others that were so profound and deep, I was amazed at the way the words flowed together. I got to understand Christian a lot more, and I loved his character, he's flawed and imperfect and so human, I loved reading his story. The book is full of fabulous suspense and intrigue and makes for a wild ride. I feel like I should say something bad so I don't sound like a complete fangirl but I can't help it. Jordan's writing is amazing, it's beautiful and authentic and No One Lives Forever is one of her best yet.

This book was given to me in 2008 and I tried to read it then, but couldn't get past the first few chapters. Forward to 2015 and I decided to give this one a try again, but couldn't get past the first few chapters again, although I did go past my last stopping point hoping the story would snag me. It didn't.

First, I despise books written about the drug cartel. I do not like movies about it and I like books about it even less. Second, there was too much telling and not showing. Third, there was way too much narration and I didn't feel the characters interactions were flowing and could not grab ahold of even one character to decide I cared what happened to them. Where was the romance? The main characters were already in an established relationship...

Overall, it was the jumping around that had me tossing this book in the "get rid of stack."
