Heaven Off East 82nd

Rate this book
Two weeks. A simple deal. A pair of polar opposite strangers. What could go wrong?

Gemma DeLuca wants nothing more than to be a writer. The only issue? She’s stuck working as a copy editor and dog-sitting on the side to make ends meet. Things start looking up when her side hustle lands her in an Upper East Side penthouse for two weeks, while her ultra-wealthy clients vacation in France. Between their thousand-thread count sheets, her own king-sized bed, and an adorable lapdog to look after, it feels like the gig of a lifetime.

Until her client’s brother shows up in the middle of the night, expecting the place to be empty. Elias Kaplan is handsome, arrogant, and a certified player: exactly the kind of guy Gemma avoids at all costs. To make matters worse, he needs a place to stay—but doesn’t want his brother to know he’s crashing at his place.

So when Gemma’s boss assigns her a test-run article on a topic she knows nothing about, she strikes a deal with she won’t rat him out if he helps her write about one-night stands.

What was supposed to be a temporary arrangement quickly turns into something more as Gemma gets glimpses of the man behind that charming smile, and finds they have more in common than she thought. Except something more isn’t what either of them is looking for—no matter how many times they might wake up in the same bed.

Heaven Off East 82nd is a closed-door romcom with sizzle but no spice, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

I’m a hopeless romantic who loves to write books filled with anticipation, butterflies, and an abundance of fun.

After being frequently described as "overly chatty" by family, friends and teachers alike, I decided to commit some of those never ending words to paper and write the kind of stories that make your heart skip a beat.

I live in Ontario, Canada with my wonderful husband and beautiful new baby, and can probably be found rage-quitting Mario Kart whenever I’m not writing.

4.5 Stars!

First of all, the biggest thank you to the author, Julianne Baclayanto, for giving me the opportunity to read this early and leave a review!

This was my first ARC of the year, and GUYS! AAAH! This is adorable! I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. It’s such a quick, easy, and joyful read. The vibes? Absolutely immaculate. The New York City aesthetic, the cute dog Princess, a job at a magazine, and the amazing characters—it feels like you’re reading a 2000s romcom or watching your favorite comfort show for the millionth time! Everything is so vivid, and honestly, this would make the perfect movie. I’m not kidding when I say it’s the ideal romcom. It has everything I want in one.

I loved all the characters, too! Gemma was super likable, and seeing her driven passion for writing, her struggles with self-doubt, and her personal growth was just great. Her fear of getting hurt by letting people too close was also very relatable and beautifully written. And don’t get me started on her roommates (and besties)—I want to be friends with them and go to brunch ASAP!
Elias might seem like your typical Upper East Side playboy at first, but he’s so much more than his exterior suggests. They complement each other perfectly. I loved how their relationship begins with subtle attraction and develops naturally throughout the book. (No insta-love, yay! That’s one of my biggest icks.)

This is a closed-door romance, but the tension and passion between them are chef’s kiss! I finished it in two days (and only had to stop because it was 2 a.m.).
The New York City backdrop is so vivid and magical—it sometimes feels like the city’s a character in itself. From the bustling streets to cozy cafes, every detail immerses you in the story. If you’ve ever dreamed of living out your romcom fantasies in NYC, this book will take you there.

Heaven off East 82nd releases on February 1 and will be available on Kindle Unlimited! I totally recommend adding this to your TBR—you won’t regret it! 🥰

"What’s meant to be, will be."

I had some pretty rough couple of days (thank you flu) but if there is one thing that made them better it was this book so I want to start by thanking the author, Julianne Baclayanto, for sending me an ARC.

And luckily this will be published in time for Valentine's Day so set your reminders for February the 1st.

If you've ever read my past romance book reviews you'll see there is a recurrent theme: me mentioning how much of a hopeless romantic I am though I don't enjoy Hallmark movies (the paradox!). But once in a while, I find a great romance book like Heaven Off East 82nd. And suddenly I'm blushing, giggling, kicking my feet, and feeling awfully single. 😭💗

The Characters

Gemma
Gemma was relatable in a way I didn't expect. From lacking confidence in her writing to her fear of being vulnerable and getting attached, I liked how she perfectly encapsulated the young and determined yet unsure typology without being one-dimensional.

Eli

What does Eli have that many male protagonists lack? Not only is he far from toxic, he's a great human being. Flawed and broken (aren't we all a little?) but generous, selfless, and considerate. Not to mention he's handsome and smart, too. He's book-boyfriend material.

Honorable mentions to Veda, Cassie, and Princess.

The relationship
Can we stop for a second and talk about how healthy their relationship was?I mean, the way it evolved from friendship to something more. And they actually do love each other! I know you may say "Isn't this the standard?". Well, yes, but romance books nowadays tend to prefer insta-love rather than an actual emotional connection. I'm so glad this was not the case for Eli and Gemma. Also, it is hot, but the overall spice is mild.

The plot<?b>
I got massive The Nanny Diaries and Gossip Girl Upper Manhattan) vibes from it.
The best way to describe this book is "short and sweet". It is under 250 pages so it definitely earned one of the top spots in my short novels recs lists. The chapters flew by and the action was very lively. I appreciated the funny moments (good thing the AC finally gets fixed- is this a spoiler?). The feelings were described in a realistic manner and I absolutely loved how the author handled that awkwardness we know all too well after dreaming we were dating someone and then seeing them in real life. The friendship between Gemma, Veda, and Cassie was so wholesome! There was not a moment of boredom and even though the book itself was short, I did get pretty attached to the characters (Hi, Eli!🤭)

Favorite quotes
“And maybe I’m still kind of scared. But it’s only because I don’t want to lose you.”
He pulls me into him, one hand on my waist, the other still softly holding my face, thumb sweeping back and forth on my cheek.
“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Well, what do you want?”
His eyes bore into me, so much so that it gives me the urge to look away so he can’t read me.
“You.”
😭💗💗❤️💗💗💗

“I want all of you,” he says, pulling me closer. “And I think you want me too.”

The ending
This book ended in the cutest way possible and it filled my heart with joy. It was the kind of happily ever after that makes you believe again in true love and destiny. What's meant to be, will be. 💕

My first review and book of the year yay !!! First off I want to say a huge thank you to Julianne for giving me the opportunity to be an early reader of Heaven Off East 82nd!! I will be forever grateful for opportunities like this. I absolutely loved this book and loved how easy and fresh it was to read like the most classic romcom movie or your favorite show you rewatch over and over. Gemma was so instantly lovable and I loved how driven she was to pursue her passion for writing and creating her dream life in her dream city. I loved all of her friends and thought Gemma, Cassie, and Veda were the sweetest group of girls and roommates ever. Eli is your classic wealthy playboy in the best way. I love how he’s also immediately likable and I started to like him even more as I kept reading. I loved how perfectly they fit together and all of their sweet moments just enjoying each others company. I love the way the book wrapped up and was in happy tears by the end over how sweet it was. Definitely add this to your tbr and be on the lookout for its February release. <3

ARC REVIEW

Gemma, juggling multiple jobs in order to make ends meet. One of these jobs is dog sitting. While dog sitting for her newest client a surprise visitor arrives. Elias, just been kicked out of his flat and in need of a place to stay. When he arrives at his brother place, only his brother isn’t there but in fact a dog sitter. In exchange for staying there and not telling his brother, Elisa agrees to help Gemma with her article about one-night stands.

There are little thing present throughout the whole book in which you see the feeling between these two shine through. From lavender to passed on favors. I love when you see the little things and can see the little things characters remember. Going in to reading this book I knew it was one-character POV however with the little things Elias remembered I would have loved to being inside his head.

They were a cute couple, and their story was made up of little moment in which see them slowly developing a friendship to feelings and confessions. I loved their confessions to each other. From thing seeing in stairways to innocent lies being revealed. They were really sweet as a couple. Elias is so cute towards Gemma, showing true intentions and change but is also so genuine and encouraging when helping Gemma achieve her dream of being a writer.

In this heartfelt story, we follow the journey of Gemma as she navigates self doubt and personal growth. The second guessing herself and hesitancy to take risks is so relatable! It’s a rewarding journey for readers to celebrate her accomplishments along the way.

The slow burn romance between Gemma & Eli was slow burninggg but so satisfying! What starts off as subtle attraction, their relationship flourishes into something deep and meaningful. It shows emotional growth, trust and vulnerability.

I absolutely loved the strong and supportive friendships. The bond between the friends offer emotional strength, encouragement and of course laughter!

Heaven Off East 82nd is such a light and easy romantic read! The story begins with Gemma dog-sitting for Eli’s brother’s dog for a few weeks in their home, and the two become unexpected roommates. While Eli helps Gemma write the article on one-night stands, she keeps his secret from his brother for the time being. Though their meet cute was hilarious, the two develop feelings for each other as they spend a lot of time together, and their building chemistry just feels so natural throughout the novel.

Gemma was a very relatable character. She’s afraid to experience life basically, but I’m glad she had friends, and Eli, who push her to experience new things despite her reluctance to do so. She has big dreams and I’m glad the conclusion to the story with regards to her career was in her favor. Though we know a few things about Eli’s reluctance to join his family’s company, I wish we also had a glimpse of his POV. It would have been interesting to see his perspective on what he wanted for his career, and of course his feelings for Gemma.

This book was such a cute and easy read as the conflict wasn’t all too dramatic and the romance between the main characters was sweet and heartwarming. Pick this one up when it releases for a light and sweet romantic read!

All the makings of a rom-com that I love: an interesting meet cute, forced proximity, flirty banter, and all the feelings (good and bad)!

Gemma, I thought was very relatable. Her relationship with relationships is non-existent and something she doesn’t want to give into because of her life growing up. While understandable, I did feel at times that she just needed to put her big girl pants on. I’m glad her friends and Eli push her to do and go for the things she wants to give her more confidence. The comfort and relatability Gemma and Eli find in each other and the way they open to each other is great.

Elias was fun, flirty, and just wanted Gemma to see the person she could be. He had moments of his own insecurities getting in the way, but he was extremely lovable in all the ways! Hard not to fall for him!

Even with being a closed door romance , you felt their tension and passion in their moments that were shared. It still had a very sexy feel and sometimes that’s hard to accomplish in a closed door romance, but this I felt hit perfectly.

ARC REVIEW-
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - This book was so adorable!

Gemma was a great main character. She had such a relatable view on fear of failure. She was so relatable overall!
Elias was so funny! He had this perfect level of cockiness and humbleness.
The banter was so good! I loved their interactions!
I loved all the characters so much! The relationship between Cassie, Veda, and Gemma was so cute and I strive to have that kind of friendship!
Princess was absolutely my favorite in the whole book. I love that Gemma was known for her relationship with dogs and that is just so sweet!

This book was written entirely from Gemma's perspective, and there's this moment where she realizes all of Elias' actions are representations of his feelings, this is honestly my favorite part in the whole book.
The writing was wonderful. It was slightly repetitive, but, for the most part, it was top tier! It was perfectly paced!

Thanks to Julianne Baclayanto! I absolutely loved it!

Out of every main character's interactions, this book has the funniest and awkward one of them all. I did enjoy the beginning and end a lot than the 75% mark of the book ( but I think that mainly is to do with a major plot point), but it was 'fixed' by the actions of the character, making up for it. The book's premise was cute, and it was easy to get into the plot and writing, which I liked. I wish the feelings of the FL were slowed down, as I felt she developed feelings too quickly - while it is realistic in a way, it felt as if she was overthinking the smallest things, as a result, even if they had no meaning (but that's just me being picky with her character). I loved how the ML remembered statements that the FL stated in passing comments, which I thought was adorable. I appreciate that their banter remained the same till the end.

Thank you to the author for providing an honest review.

Heaven off East 82nd is a delightful read with two incredibly likable characters. Gemma is a dog-loving, chronically single, writer. Elias is a PhD student who makes having one-night stands part of his routine. It feels like they have nothing in common but in time they learn they may be more alike than they think.

I loved watching these characters banter back and forth and how they didn’t pull any punches with one another. I also had no problem relating to Gemma because I will happily take a Law & Order Marathon over a night out any day 🤣

Overall, this book is a fun, easy read that I would recommend to anyone who likes romance stories that are more than surface level. Add this one to your February TBR list.

This story was super cute, and Gemma and Eli had great chemistry and moments! They kinda had an insta-love, which I’m not a huge fan of, so that took me out of it a bit. I also wish we had gotten an opportunity for Gemma to deal with her issues from childhood with her parents, like Eli was kind of able to do with his brother.

However, I loved the side story about Gemma going after her dream of being a writer, and having great friends to support her fully. Her reasons for not wanting to be in relationships hit a bit too close to home for me….LOL! Just made her more relatable! Eli was super sweet and intentional, and we LOVE that.

Overall, great writing with lots of wit and fun!

Gemma dreams of becoming a writer and when an opportunity lands in her lap, she seizes it. The problem: it’s an article on one night stands —something which she has zero experience in. Thank God, Elias lands right at her doorstep where she is dog sitting for his brother and sister-in-law.

As their friendship deepens, they soon want more but Gemma has her fears which prevent her from being in a relationship. I really loved those scenes where they worked together quietly. It was those quiet moments where these two lonely hearts bonded.

My heart also ached for little Gemma who felt abandoned and unloved. And I really loved the family she found in Veda and Cassie, and now, Elias. The grand gesture at the end was a lovely one and the ending was just perfect for our couple!

Gemma moonlights as a dog sitter while she is working towards convincing her boss she deserves the chance at writing a column. A chance encounter on the street, turns into her living in her clients home for two weeks with her clients brother in law while he hides out from them. The two MC's are both adamant that they don't need a relationship, and Eli helps Gemma with her "one night stand" article since she has little to no experience in the department while he's well versed with them! The two of them have a series of adorable moments, and some serious talks. The chemistry is there even if they don't see it at first!

A bit of a shorter read, but a fantastic valentine's TBR addition.

A very cute and fun book! Gemma works for a magazine and aspires to be a writer but is unsure of her capabilities. She house sits for pets as a second income, mostly because she loves dogs. Now she’s snagged a very cool gig at a penthouse in New York, not too far from where she lives but this is what upgrading means!
A very cute dog called Princess needs regular walks and brushing. Then there’s the moment where she apparently might not be staying alone in the apartment and a handsome stranger is there.
The book takes you on a laugh out loud journey through Gemma’s life and incorporates insecurity and going through some hard time when growing up, really well. It was fast paced and very fun to read!

I was lucky enough to be able to read this early, thank you Julianne for this ARC!

I truly enjoyed On my Naughty List, but Julianne’s second book, Heaven off East 82nd, takes the cake! I loved the setting and the illusion of a slow burn in a short period of time, keeping you on your toes the whole way through to a perfect ending. Gem and Eli are both fun, personable, and emotionally intelligent - which differs from many other romance books.

This was a fun and short read, an amazing distraction to what seems to be the longest month of the year and the perfect way to get me in a Valentine mood. This book comes out in just a few days, February 1st, and I highly recommend it!!

That what I call great start of reading year! The vibes, banter and cute dog all wrapped in New York aesthetic and 2000s vibes. Gemma is absolute gems of fmc, funny, relatable and real. Her struggle and backstory helped to bring more rawness with her character, I liked her development and growth. Eli is actually sweet guy with, humor side but also his own depth. I enjoyed his work on helping Gemma with getting out of her shell and how he tried to be respectful and responsive and different situations. Both of them are just this adorable, rom com couple that got their happy ending in Big Apple.

💐Perfect for Valentine’s month! Aka if you want a light and fluffy short and sweet romance read.
Maybe it’s the mid 20 year-old in me, but as someone who grew up watching a lot of 2000s fluffy romance movies this gave me all of those kind of vibes.
I loved that we actually got to read our FMC’s, magazine, article I thought that was a really nice touch. It felt like the reader got to be included in her work through the page.

🌺forced proximity
🌸New York city vibes

Characters are relatable, and the story is engaging

Unlike the last few romance books I've read, the author, Julianne, spent time making the main character, Gemma, multifaceted and creating a plot. This book is not just about sex. It's about becoming invested in Gemma's life. This is not the frequent method of switching back and forth between the two main characters. It's wholly about Gemma. Julianne describes the scenes and emotions seamlessly woven together. I can't wait for more books by this author!

Julianne’s second closed door romance did not disappoint! From the laugh out loud moments to the moments of swoon Eli and Gemma will have you hooked on their story and not wanting to put it down.

These characters were so worth the wait. Gemma is a character who is so relatable and easy to connect with. She starts off this story swearing off love and romance but as the story goes on she starts to think that maybe her mind can be changed by a certain dark haired MMC. I loved her arc through the story and seeing how her internal dialogue evolves as the story goes on. Eli was such a great MMC. His development was also really fun to watch and see play out. There were so many little things that he did that just added up so well throughout the story and I loved it!

If you’re someone who loved NYC, classic romcom vibes, closed door, and cute doggy sidekicks then I would highly recommend this story!! Make sure you mark your calendars for February 1st!

Huge thank you to Julianne for allowing me to be an ARC reader💗

This closed door contemporary romance was a sweet, fast read. The characters were relatable and likeable, and the pacing was spot on. Tropes include forced proximity, roommates. It was a great vacation or beach read - which is exactly where I read it.

I would definitely recommend for anything that loves a good contemporary romance.

This was such a cute quick book to read. Loved the characters and the flirty banter. This is more of a realistic way to find love and not too over the top. Overall I really enjoyed this book and even the closed door spice especially after reading dark romance lately. This is a fun palette cleanser!
