A brand new reverse grumpy sunshine, college football romance in a new series of standalone romances.
Charlotte Baker is the grump to my sunshine and the star of all my unrequited fantasies.
She checks all my boxes while all I seem to do is piss her off.
But I’m a wide receiver in the Big Ten. I’m used to winning, and my golden retriever personality is sure to wear her down.
Those cutting looks she gives? Just a cover. Secretly she wants me; she’s just loathed to admit it.
Those snarky comments? They're simply a way to hide her attraction; she just can't see it yet.
Oh, and did I mention I just discovered her father is engaged to my mother?
Now she's saltier than normal.
But I won't let this forbidden romance get me down. I have a plan, a way to win her over and secure my mother’s engagement to her father at the same time.
On paper, my plan is I'm going to show her what it's like to be romanced. I'm going to woo her. I'm going to throw the Love Playbook right at her.
Lettie might have made it clear that she's not interested in me, but I'm nothing if not persistent.
My go to author. I discovered Gracie when I got the chance to read Things I wish I said as an Arc. An immediate 5 start book and one of my top reads in 2025 🥺
And here I am lucky once again to received another ARC - The love playbook.
The cover hadn’t sold me so my mistake was doubt the author. But I will not do that ever again ❗️
It was such a fun read and very different from the first Arc. Gracie perfectly navigates through so many emotions were you can laugh out, smile, through deeper conversations and feelings.
Charlotte and Chris and just instantly both lovable. Charlotte a bit closed off with her feelings, grumpy, needing to find herself, and Chris the sunshine of this book, funny and sweet. Once again a MC who treats women with respect and his her with so much adoration!
Also I love a good friend group! It can be such a fun addition to a romance book. I instantly want to read the rest of the series and get to know the group more
I couldn't read it. The author wrote such a selfish scene by everyone for the MFC it made me irrationally angry. Dad and me girlfriend were selfish in not only meeting for the 1st time but announcing they were engaged and then upset she was mad. MMC was upset with FMC because she hurt his moms feeling while the selfish dad left the MMC to emotional support his mom. Not one person bothered to even tell MFC happy birthday. And they served dessert not a birthday cake. Then MMC decides he is going to convince MFC to get onboard with his mom's wedding because he wants his mom happy. I refused to read anymore
I love a good Gracie Graham book and I am so happy to have this spin off series! It was incredibly swoony and I love golden retriever MMC’s and black cat FMC’s.
There’s a lot of family drama that’s complicated and brings the contention. I liked how things worked out in the end though and that some good resolutions were found. The found family text chains and group dynamics are so fun and I love the college setting.
Great chemistry and banter. It’s heated and an easy read to fly through. Looking forward to the next one!
Overall audience notes: - NA Contemporary Romance - Language: high - Romance: fade to black - Content warnings: divorce, a parent with depression (theme throughout)
When I first started this book I only got 16% of the way in and thought it would be CRINGEYYYYYYY! But then, four weeks later, I returned and gave the story another shot. I'm glad I did because this book was great!! There were actually some deep moments and the dialogue didn't turn out to be too cringey! A few times I was upset with Charlotte because it was taking what seemed like forever for her to realize that her mom was the problem and that she wouldn't end up like her mom (chronically depressed), but overall this book was really great.
I really enjoyed the forbidden‑dating aspect (Chris and Charlotte's parents are engaged to be married, which would make them step-siblings, though they’re not related by blood)! It added tension without crossing any truly problematic lines. Sure, it might raise eyebrows among jealous or nosy people, but in the long run, it’s not a huge deal since they really love each other
A part I loved was when Chris kissed Lettie at the party where she was with "Soccer Guy" and then says this: “If you’re going to spend the rest of the night talking with him, then I’m going to be right up here.” He taps a finger lightly over my temple, and I shiver. “Every. Fucking. Second.” 😍 😍 😍
Also when Lettie actually waited up for Chris in his dorm when he was at the away game. That made Chris CRUMBLE IN LOVE WITH HER. 😍 😍 😍
Also, we love fierce Chris: “Unlike you, the world could burn with everyone and everything in it, and I’d still want us."😍
I honestly thought we were headed for a third‑act breakup scene when Lettie found Chris' "Love Playbook", but thankfully that didn’t happen! Instead, I was pleasantly surprised—Lettie read all the sweet notes Chris had left inside and realized it wasn’t some calculated ploy to ‘win her over’ like a playboy move, but a genuine expression of his love for her. Great writing by Graham!
Seriously gonna read more by Graham now!

"I won’t fall in love only to push everyone away. I’m my own person. I’m strong, loved, and worthy, and I have nothing to fear—because today and every day, I choose happiness."
Charlotte’s journey is one of strength, self-discovery, and learning to open her heart. When Chris—goofy, charming, and utterly endearing—puts everything on the line to win her over, the result is an absolutely uplifting love story filled with friendship, family, trust, and forgiveness.
Gracie is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors—this is the second ARC I’ve read from her, and she delivers another solid 5-star read! The book strikes the perfect balance between witty, laugh-out-loud moments and deeper, more emotional themes, all written with care and thoughtfulness.
This story took me through all the emotions—I laughed (the last page of Chapter 34 is everything), cried, sighed in happiness, and even huffed in frustration. And I loved every second of it. Charlotte is an incredible protagonist—easily my favorite FMC in the series so far—and Chris? He’s hilarious, sweet, and impossible not to adore.
An emotionally rich and beautifully written romance, this book is a must-read. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!
I received this book as an ARC from the author, and I’m beyond grateful for the journey it took me on.
Charlotte has been through a lot, her mom has chronic depression, and since her dad left the care of her mother has fallen to her. She has never had a relationship outside of her mom and lives for her mothers happiness. Even from a young age, this isn't how a teenager should have to live. The relationship she has with her father is strained because she blames him for leaving her and all the care she's had to endure since then.
Chris is a college football player, he can fix anything with an engine, and he is an all around good guy. He knew that they were going to end up together, he just had to figure out how to get Charlotte to see it to, so he creates the Love Playbook. He is there with her through everything and in the end helps her more than anyone and helps her to realize she gets a life too.
The Love Playbook is an amazing, softhearted read with beautiful main characters. The chronic depression aspect was written very well and I was glad that we got to see Charlotte grow and stand up for herself. This was a great story and Chris and "Lettie girl" are meant to be together. I love Chris' family and how they immediately accept her and love her in-spite of her grumpiness. This was a well written story and I am looking forward to Damon's book.
What starts as a sweet college romance between a sunshine-y football player and a guarded, no-nonsense girl slowly unfolds into a deeply emotional story about healing, growth, and letting love in.
Charlotte is fierce, independent, and carries more than most people ever see. Her journey isn’t just about romance; it’s about finally choosing herself after years of living for everyone else. Watching her struggle, stumble, and eventually step into her own was powerful and so relatable.
And Chris? Chris is everything. Charming, hilarious, a little ridiculous (in the best golden retriever way), and so incredibly patient with her. I loved how he never pushed, just gently showed up, again and again, until Charlotte finally let herself believe she was allowed to be loved like that.
Also? The playbook idea? Genius. Melted my heart with every page.
The friendship dynamics in this book were another highlight. The banter, group texts, and the found family vibe made the world feel bigger and more alive.
Gracie balances fun, flirty vibes with deeper emotional beats so well. This book made me laugh out loud, tear up, and swoon—sometimes all in the same chapter.
If you’re into slow-burns, lovable side characters, sunshine x grump dynamics, and a love interest who will quite literally do anything to make you feel safe, The Love Playbook is for you.
The book is told from two points of view: Charlotte and Chris. The story itself has quite short chapters and therefore reads smoothly. What I really like about this story is that it is a reverse Grumpy vs Sunshine and that makes the story so much fun. Something else I really enjoyed were the recurring characters; Jace and Brynn. It is Always nice to read about characters that you already (semi) know in a later part.
Apart from that, I really liked the two main characters in this book so much together. They are opposites, but that is exactly what makes them so cute together. I find it incredibly sweet that Chris is a family man. He is so great with his younger brothers. I also thought the idea of the Love Playbook was very Original and well thought out. The way Chris is so considerate of Charlotte was also incredibly adorable to me. How he helped her take care of her mother; it really put a lump in my throat.
Charlotte is portrayed from the start as a very strong woman, but also as someone who has her own problems and struggles with them. I have a lot of respect for the way she keeps all her balls in the air and still keeps going. Somehow I was able to identify with Charlotte and her feelings. Especially in the aftermath of the divorce. That hits very close to home for me. However, I found that Charlotte sometimes reacted in a very extreme way. At the same time, I can understand that somewhere in her situation.
The written narrative is regularly interspersed with tekst messages between the main characters and through the 'Boys of Riverside' group app. I love how she can so easily incorporate a previous series into a new one. Also, I Always enjoy such variety. The tekst messages regularly made me laugh out loud.
As you can see from the above, I thoroughly enjoyed this first installment of the 'Boys of Ann Arbor U' series. I am already looking forward to reading the next parts of the series!
✨Reverse Grumpy x Sunshine ✨College Romance ✨Football player MMC ✨Love/Hate Relationship ✨Found Family ✨Step Siblings (almost) ✨Mental Health Rep
Oh I absolutely Love EVERYTHING Gracie writes. And I’m so happy we got a book for Chris! He was everything I wanted and more, and I fell hard for him. He’s goofy, silly, family oriented, flirty and hot as hell.
I also fell absolutely in love with Charlotte! I applaud how Gracie takes real life, pulling on your heart strings, situations and makes you feel every ounce of emotion that’s on the page. I loved how the story concentrated of the effects of deep depression on the people around the person struggling and how they struggle too. Charlotte has had it rough with her mother’s mental state and her fractured relationship with her dad. Chris was a complete rock for her and an acts of service god.
The banter between the friends group is top notch. There’s no spice like I normally read but I don’t even care, the crackling on page chemistry between Chris and Charlotte, then fade to black, was enough to placate me in that department, and it was electric! I adored all the hints at future couples! Gotta love an Easter egg!
Another great read and I’m excited to meet the rest of the boys from AAU!
I was pleasantly surprised by this story. Yes, this takes place on college campus - Yes, there is a football player however I would not really call this a sports romance. There is talk of a game and there may be one or two scenes where they watch a game but other then "they won" it is not a play by play. There is no talk of being drafted and very few locker room scenes. That does not detract from the story for me but if you like a lot of details about sports you are not going to have that here.
What it does have is true family issues which they work through. I really identified a lot of the emotions that the main characters, especially Charlotte, went through. There are a lot of other characters mentioned as well and I felt like I have missed other stories, however you can enjoy this as a standalone.
Chris is great. A true sweetheart with great intentions. The sex is not explicit and is not truly closed door but the door is not fully open either. This was a nice change actually as I felt there was more time spent with their relationship, romance and emotions, and not completely dominated by sex scenes.
I highly recommend this story and am now going to see what else I can read that this author has written! Enjoy.
I did not expect what I just read, in the best way possible! Chris is such a cinnamon roll! Even though I knew they’d end up together in the end, I still needed a lot of convincing. I love his nickname for her, Lettie girl. He was every thing you’d want in a soft hearted book boyfriend. The best thing Lettie could have done was get therapy herself but thankfully Chris was there to help her work through what she needed to, even if she didn’t know it was him. It was a beautiful character development for Lettie. My favorite part of when she found the Playbook & seen what Chris had did for the particular play. I literally laughed out loud. This was a great book and I honestly can’t wait for more from Gracie! Can’t wait to read Damon’s!
Just goes to show sometimes we need certain people in our lives willing to break down those walls so we can heal.
CW: for a “closed door” this is fairly graphic. It’s still closed door but definitely not what I would consider a “sweet” romance. It has f bombs, underage drinking, physical attraction description ie “popping a tent”, depression
What a great start to the series! Chris is Jace’s roommate and Charlotte is Brynn’s best friend. Readers have met them both before so their characters aren’t a surprise. But the development between them is!
Chris is the light to Charlotte’s dark. She so needed him in her life! The author shows such a sweet side to this tough football player that you can’t help but fall for him. Charlotte is reluctant a first but over time she sees how much she deserves a love like he has to offer.
The family dynamic plays a part in the story but it’s only adds to the growth between Chris and Charlotte. I truly enjoyed their story!
This book was such an enjoyable read. Charlotte was a really smart and fierce FMC whose struggles were relatable. Chris was amazing. The delusional golden-retriever vibes he gave off were immaculate. I loved how the story progressed and the playbook just tied up everything together so nicely. I especially loved how he got help from the Riverside Boys for it. Seeing them all again was so rewarding. Excited for the next book in this series. A second-chance romance between Damon and Avery? I'm here for it.
Oooo idk where to even start with this one because it was interesting 🤔
Always down for a well written enemies to lovers and I loved that we got moments with Jace and Brynn as well😁😍
Had so much fun this weekend with our cousins here and this was the cherry on top because I’m always down for good books🤗🤗🤗
Absolutely read the other series first because this book will make more sense and I love this books-my favorite is book 5 because oh my my my Teagan is so sweet and my favorite boy of them all❤️❤️❤️
“I won’t fall in love only to push everyone around me away. I’m my own person. I’m strong and loved and worthy, and I have nothing to fear because today and every day I choose happiness.” Will Charlotte be ready to open her heart to goofy and charming Chris when he puts in his heart in the line to conquer her? Absolutely uplifting love story full of charming, friendship, family, trust, forgiveness and so much more.
Erg pijnlijk...
All the feels. I love books that I get in my feels and this one was perfect. I laughed (last page of chap 34 is my favorite part), I cried, happily sighed, huffed in annoyance...just all the feels!
Charlotte is an amazing character, and probably my favorite FMC in this series so far. And Chris is so damn funny.
I honestly think Gracie is becoming one of my favourite authors. This is the second arc I’ve read of hers and it’s 5 stars all round!
It’s witty and fun but also shines a light on more serious topics that are written in an extremely thought-out way. I loved the plot and characters, and I can’t wait for the next books in this series!
This is the first book in this spin off series from the boys of riverside. Funny, quirky Chris is the lead male character and Charlotte (who he calls Lettie) is the lead female character. I love the way reverse grumpy sunshine and enemies to lovers (maybe more from Charlotte than Chris) tropes are intertwined in this story. Chris is energetic and exuberant but he is totally perfect in how he communicates and treats woman which I loved. There are some family dynamics which clouds the picture between these two but I appreciated the highlight in Charlotte’s mom having depression and how this important disease was pictured throughout this book. I can’t wait for more stories from AAU!
I love how the author took the main character from stage to stage making him more and more lovable along the way. Everyone should have a Chris Collins in their life.... swoooooon! I loved that this was a closed door romance, but still gave you all the feels without explicit content. I've got a new favorite author.
Really loved the story and the characters. Just quite a few typos, and for one chapter early on Samantha was referred to Shannon several times . Love everything from Gracie though, this one just needed another edit ✍️!
Cuuuute! Wasn’t Charlotte’s biggest fan, but I really loved Chris. Probably would’ve given it 3 stars except the ending was very well written. Plus there was some conflict without there being a 3rd act breakup sooo thank you Gracie.
5 STARS FOR THE LOVE PLAYBOOK!! Charlotte and Chris were Perfection.... These two were different as night and day, but so perfect for each other. I could not gets enough of this book....I read it straight through. This author is quickly moving up to the top of my 1-click authors.
Well this was utterly swoony — Gracie Graham has done it again!! This book was perfection and if I had to put this book down (boo adulting) then I was thinking about this book!
The chemistry between Lettie and Chris had me kicking my feet. He was the sunshine to her grumpy and it was perfection.
I loved the journey these two went on, especially Lettie learning to prioritize herself and Chris’ unfailing support of her.
“Oh, Lettie, Lettie, Lettie. You think your joke will turn me off, but really, they just make me want you even more.”
I’ve been waiting for Chris’ story since Tell Me You Love Me. Not only did he get his own book, but i was lucky enough to receive an arc. Chris is golden retriever, goofball gold. Charlotte witty comebacks are perfect. The guys group chat had me dying. Charlotte and Chris’ banter back and forth, chefs kiss. The Love Playbook did not disappoint. Excited to find out what happened between Damon and Avery, and if Brandon ever tells Tatum how he feels.
