Lilah Love #11

Junior Has a Secret

Rate this book
In front of you, behind you, all around you, killers everywhere.
One, two, and three, is it for you or him or them?
Red, red, red, red, red, red...
What the F?

Junior is back and stupider than ever. It’s all of us and the nonsense is irritating. Of course, I have killers in front of me and all around me. I’m me. Kane is Kane. And both of us came by our bad habits honestly. We have crappy fathers.
In other words, I push harmless Junior aside and head to a crime scene, and when I kneel beside the wealthy victim, I glance up to spy a painting that is pretty and one tone—red. When I inquire with the house manager about the artist, she can’t remember who painted it, but she does know the name of the painting itself.

It’s called Red.
The color of blood.
And now Junior has my attention.

While I enjoy the characters in this series of books by LRJ I have given it a 1 star rating because I am simply tired of getting a novella length book with increasingly less story each time I purchase a new book at full price. While the information states the book is 171 pages what it doesn’t tell you is that 25 of those pages are previews of upcoming and previously released books. The story was actually 149 pages. I will gladly pay more for a full story but this author doesn’t seem able or interested in publishing a full story in one book. I will likely continue to buy future books in this series as I am invested in the storyline but I have ceased starting any new series she is publishing because I feel like she is money gouging her readers by this practice.

Lilah love

What a story. I had the pleasure of reading this book as an ARC and I am aware this is book 11 in the series and I didn't have time to read the first 10 first (don't worry I will be reading them all in due course).

Whilst I'm sure we learn all about Lilah and Kane throughout the previous books I really loved seeing how they interacted in the book as a standalone. Who doesn't love a badass FMC who handles her shit like a boss? I know I do!

Her father has just been elected as the new governor and whilst her relationship with him is ... Rocky ... She is there to see it happen. Then a dead body rocks up. But who is the culprit? Who is the victim? And is a stalker just a randomer or is it someone closer to home? Honestly I had SOOOOOOO many questions to this book and I honestly can't wait to dive into more of the backstory and future stories, I can see it being one I keep up to date with.

So whilst I can't say read them from book 1, I'm likely to say that in the future. Super well throughout, easy to read and captivating! And if you love a book that makes you question stuff, this is definitely for you!

I was fortunate enough to be able to read Junior Has A Secret as an ARC reader and was completely sucked in true 'Lilah Love' style. This series must be read in order and each book will leave you wanting more. It's completely binge worthy. Junior's reveal was completely unexpected and with so many questions. I highly recommend this book and the entire series for some suspense, true Lilah Love grit and Kane Mendez Latino heat!

Book review: Lisa Renee Jones’ Junior Has a Secret.
Published by Julia Patra Publishing with a sincere thank you to the publisher for my gifted ARC.

Returning to the Lilah Love series always feels like coming home to a place that’s equal parts comfort and chaos. This is book eleven, and at this point Lilah’s voice lives rent-free in my head. Her sharp inner commentary, her refusal to soften herself for anyone, and her knack for stumbling straight into danger remain the backbone of this series. Junior Has a Secret doesn’t try to be a neat, standalone mystery. Instead, it leans fully into the long game, tightening the threads that have been quietly winding through the series since the beginning.

The story opens with an unsettling sense that something is circling just out of sight. Killers everywhere. A feeling of being watched. That constant tension is one of Lisa Renee Jones’ strengths, and she uses it well here. Lilah’s narration is snarky, self-aware, and slightly unhinged in the way that makes her so compelling. She knows her flaws. She owns them. Kane does too. Their shared baggage, especially the “we survived our fathers” bond, adds weight to every interaction. Kane remains the steady, dangerous presence who both grounds and challenges Lilah, and their dynamic continues to be one of my favorite aspects of the series.

The central mystery pulls us toward a wealthy victim, a crime scene thick with implication, and a single-color painting called Red. That painting becomes a symbol that lingers long after the scene ends. It’s simple, unsettling, and impossible to ignore, much like the secrets unraveling beneath the surface. Junior, long a source of irritation and unanswered questions, finally steps into the spotlight. The reveal didn’t come out of nowhere, but it still landed hard. I found myself both surprised and not surprised at all, which honestly feels intentional and well-earned.

“Red. The color of blood. And now Junior has my attention.”

This installment reads faster than previous books, and while some readers may notice the shorter length, I didn’t feel shortchanged. Instead, it felt like a sharp inhale before something big happens. The pacing is tight, the stakes are high, and the tension never really lets up. That said, this book absolutely ends on a cliffhanger, and it’s not a gentle one. It’s the kind that leaves you staring at the last page, convinced there’s no way Lilah and Kane didn’t plan for this, even if the book hasn’t shown us how yet.

What I appreciate most is the continuity. Every book builds on the last, and Junior Has a Secret reinforces that this series is about more than solving one murder at a time. It’s about patterns, power, and the cost of secrets. Longtime fans will pick up on subtle callbacks and emotional beats that wouldn’t land the same way without the full series behind them. This is not a jumping-in point, but for readers already invested, it’s a deeply satisfying and frustrating-in-the-best-way read.

Star rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5 stars)

JUNIOR HAS A SECRET is the eleventh instalment in LR Jones (aka Lisa Renee Jones) contemporary, adult LILAH LOVE suspense series focusing on FBI Special Agent Lila Love-Mendez, and her husband, businessman /Cartel heir Kane Mendez. JUNIOR HAS A SECRET should not be read as a stand alone as there is an ongoing premise throughout the series.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: Throughout the series, Lilah Love has been looking into an organization known as The Society, a powerful group that controls many of the politicians, law enforcement personnel, and the rich and famous, and it is this group that may or may not be targeting the people at the top, one of which is her estranged father, a man running for Governor, a man with connections to the people in control.

Told from first person perspectives (Lilah) JUNIOR HAS A SECRET picks up after the events and cliff hanger of AGENT VS ASSASSIN follows in the wake of the election of Lilah’s estranged father as the new governor of New York but Lilah’s father’s campaign handler appears to have gone rogue, and when her father demands to be taken to the ‘new’ governor’s mansion, all does not go according to plan when death and destruction arrive before everyone else. As Lilah begins to search for the truth, someone else is determined to take down our story line heroine.
The world building follows several pathways including the fractured relationship between Lilah and her father, a man who cares only for himself; an assassin who is willing to take down the people taking aim at our story line heroine, and the return of the head of the Mendez Cartel, who has plans to destroy our story line couple.

Once again, there is another large ensemble of intriguing yet questionable secondary and supporting characters most of whom are keeping secrets: Lilah’s bodyguard Jay, Kane’s bodyguard Kit; Lilah’s brother Andrew; NYPD Chief Houston, and Lilah’s IT guru Jeff ‘TicTac’ Landers, most of whom are the hunter/gatherers of Lilah’s investigations; Lilah’s father, the new governor elect, and his ‘handler’ Pocher, and Lilah’s brother Andrew. We are introduced to an assassin who goes by Ghost, who is always one step ahead of our story line heroine; and the return of Kane’s father Roberto Mendez.

JUNIOR HAS A SECRET is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, obsession and madness, fracture family dynamics, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is compelling and riveting but covers less than twenty-four hours in the life. The characters are desperate and determined. JUNIOR HAS A SECRET ends on a cliff hanger, you have been warned.

I’m utterly addicted to this series! I just can’t get enough of it. After reading this series, Lilah’s sharp and real commentary, her hard edges as well as her ability to face danger and come out on the other side will keep me a forever Lilah Love Mendez fan.

The action-packed plot continues, full of twists, suspense, power, and murder, that keeps me on the edge of my seat, constantly wondering who or what will happen next. It’s the thrill, the tension and the masterful twists that this author excels at that keep me coming back for more!

Junior, Roberto, and Ghost have all come out to play simultaneously. Why? What’s the connection? Because with so many murderers close by, no one is safe. And there’s no such thing as a coincidence.

“You’re the problem, Lilah. Now do I have your attention?”

When your life revolves around apprehending killers, and those killers are engrossed in weaving intricate webs of lies and chaos as they converge on the scene, escalating the tension and intrigue, Lilah finds herself devoid of any distractions. However, when the words of her deceased mentor are exploited to manipulate her, what lies ahead?

Kane is generally not emotional, but he’s got a ghost of his own to deal with right now. And that’s his father. But he can handle his father…or can he??

Kane and Lila’s shared history, coupled with his steady yet dangerous presence, grounds and challenges Lila. This dynamic keeps the dangerous and powerful forces surrounding them at bay. Their relationship and love story are among my favorite aspects of this series.

When Lilah is summoned to another crime scene involving a wealthy victim, she discovers a painting above the victim that is entirely red. This immediately puts her on edge, as she senses that this is a message for her. Is Junior finally going to reveal himself?

I am thinking and hoping there is more to this storyline. But we will all have to wait and see, because this ends in a dramatic cliffhanger!

The Lilah Love series continues in Lilah Has a Secret…up next!
I can’t wait!

In this installment of the Lilah Love series, we have seen little snippets of Junior, but this time the focus shifts towards the shadows that “Junior” hides in. Lilah uncovers a web of secrets that threaten to undo everything she thought that she knew. This time we see Junior, Roberto, and Ghost come out to play simultaneously. What is the connection between them? With murders close by, no one is safe. Is it a coincidence? Lilah doesn’t believe in them.

I always love seeing Kane and Lilah together, and this book is no different. He is a bit distracted with his father not really being dead. They have a shared history and ground each other, I don’t believe that anyone else would fit with them. Their relationship is one of my favorite aspects of this series.

Like every other book in this series, I was hooked from the beginning. The level of intrigue and suspense is masterfully crafted and the clues will have you trying to solve the case right along Lilah. However, you think you have an idea of who’s behind it and then you are thrown another curve ball. The tension is high, the chemistry is wonderful as always, and I love these characters more with each book. We are left with a massive cliffhanger that leaves you reaching for the next book. This is a series that has to be read from the beginning to get the full ride, each new book adds to the story. I highly recommend it!

In the eleventh instalment of the high-octane Lilah Love series, the stakes have never been higher. Lilah is back, navigating the razor-thin line between the law and the underworld. This time, the focus shifts toward the mysterious "Junior." As Lilah digs into the shadows, she uncovers a web of secrets that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew. With the FBI on one side and the dangerous allure of the mafia on the other, whilst balancing right and wrong, Lilah must piece together the clues before the past catches up to the present.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from the author, and let me tell you, it is absolutely fabulous. If you thought you knew where this story was going, think again!

The level of intrigue in this book is top-tier. Jones weaves in clues so masterfully that you’ll find yourself playing detective right alongside Lilah.

Mafia men.The tension is high, the chemistry is electric, and the "swoon" factor is definitely off the charts. Jay, oh Jay!

It’s a fast-paced ride that culminates in a massive cliffhanger ending.

Take my advice: you must read this series in order. To fully appreciate the cleverness of the overarching plot and the depth of the characters as the author intended, start from book one and enjoy the journey.

Highly recommended!

Lisa Renee Jones knows how to twist a knife, and Junior Has A Secret is sharp, fast, and deliciously unsettling. This thriller pulls you in with its creeping sense of danger and refuses to let go, especially when you hit those moments where you pause, blink, and think… wait, what just happened?

Junior is a fascinating, unpredictable presence, equal parts intriguing and alarming; and the story thrives on that constant what is really going on here? tension. Just when you think you’ve got your footing, the narrative shifts, a revelation lands, and suddenly you’re flipping pages back to make sure you didn’t miss something (you didn’t, the book really did just go there).

Jones layers suspense with emotional complexity, delivering twists that feel both shocking and inevitable in hindsight. The pacing is tight, the atmosphere is dark, and the sense of disorientation only deepens the thrill, leaving you unsettled in the best possible way.

Dark, addictive, and smartly paced, Junior Has A Secret earns a solid 4 stars for delivering obsession, secrets, and multiple WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! moments that linger long after the final page. 🖤📖

Now… do we really have to wait to know what just happened?!?!?

Junior Has a Secret by Lisa Renee Jones kept me turning pages, but not for the reasons I expected. Contrary to the title, Junior is barely present throughout most of the book, which felt a little misleading. For the majority of the story, the plot meanders along at a much slower pace than the rest of the series, and I found myself repeatedly thinking, are we done yet?

That said, Jones clearly knows how to hook a reader. Just when the story finally picks up, we’re hit with a late-game reveal about who Junior actually is, which is followed immediately by a surprise cliffhanger involving who may or may not be dead. It’s dramatic, effective, and very on-brand for this series, even if it arrives a bit too late to fully make up for the sluggish buildup.

This ended up being my least favorite book in the series simply because it dragged compared to the others. Still, the payoff and the unanswered questions kept me invested enough to want to continue. Fans of the series will likely appreciate the setup for what’s coming next, even if this installment feels more like a bridge than a standout.

Overall, a decent read with a strong ending, but one that requires patience to get there.

LILAH IS BACK!

Another dead body and more family drama for Lilah and Kane make Junior Has A Secret come to life. From the start, this book had me totally hooked. To be honest, the entire Lilah Love Series is one of my all time favorites. Dealing with her governor-elect father and her father-in-law, who heads the cartel, Lilah finds herself in another dangerous position. Even if not said aloud, Lilah continues her sustain for stupidity which adds a bit of comedic relief to this fast fast paced thriller.
This series gets better with each new release. As with the rest of the series, Junior Has A Secret is part of a duet which means a cliffhanger, and a big one, for those of you who are not fans of the cliffies. I am looking forward to the conclusion when Lilah Has A Secret is released. Even though this is book one of a duet, Junior Has A Secret is the eleventh book of this amazing series. The series is broken into duets. Each duet needs to be read in order but as a whole, the series does not even though I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.

You need to have read Agent Vs Assassin because this book will pick up where that one left off. Litla's estranged father has just been elected the new governor of New York. However, Lilah father's campaign manager appears to have gone rogue. When her father demands to be taken to the governor's mansion, things do not go as expected. Death and destruction have come calling before everyone else. Now Lilah has to find out what has happened and is going on. But, it is soon clear that someone is trying to take Lilah out of the picture. This is a good book that has a lot of characters in it and a lot of things going on. We get to see the mess of a relationship between Lilah and her father. And assassin who is willing to take care of whoever is after Lilah, and the head of the Mendez Cartel makes a return appearance. He is not stopping until his devious plans are complete. See there is a lot going on!! This is a book you do not want to miss.

I was lucky enough to get this as an ARC. First this is book 11 in a series that you'll need to read all the books to get the most of it. But don't let that deter you because I'm obsessed with this series. I was just so happy to be back in this world even if it didn't seem like we stayed that long. I don't know if the book went faster or it just seemed that way because when I read the others I still have more to read so I just went right into the next book. Junior is revealed and I was surprised/not surprised but I feel like that there is more to that storyline too. It is going to end in a cliff-hanger and you're going to want more but read the book! I have seen booktoks about people squealing/ kicking their feet when reading, well I got pretty close to that elation a few times. Lilah is delivering all the snark that I love! I really think Kane/Lilah are smarter than the way this one ended so I'm rooting for them to really have been more prepared, but we just didn't know it!

I should be used to LRJ putting me on tenterhooks for the next Lilah Love-Mendez (I like the name change/new name) story. This one kind of hurts though. I want to know if Jay (her beloved bodyguard) was shot and killed is all. We see Lilah’s dad, the newly elected governor being implicated in a murder. Or was it a setup? We don’t know and Lilah has a Herculean task ahead of her as usual in this series. She has a murder to solve with little or no clues. Kane just wants to keep his wife safe.

This Junior character is evil through and through. More like Ghost and the Umbrella man. I guess we won’t know the perpetrator until the next book. Also Kane and Lilah need some bedroom action, pretty please. Not the smoldering looks, and heavy breathing we have in this book. Oh, and the touching. This couple are more visceral than that.
Another winner from this author.

**ARC REVIEW**

Junior Has a Secret is a fast-paced, addictive read. Being book eleven in the series, I highly recommend reading the earlier books first — it really helps to understand the characters and their ongoing storylines.

From the very first page, this story pulls you in. Danger, secrets, lies, vengeance, and betrayals keep the tension high and the pages turning. The twists and turns had me completely glued to the story, always wondering what would happen next. It’s a deliciously unsettling read that kept me on edge the entire time.

I loved the characters — Lilah is a strong, badass FMC, and the chemistry between her and Kane absolutely sizzles. They’re the perfect duo, and I couldn’t get enough of their dynamic.

Heads up: it ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared to immediately want the next book.

Thank you to @lisareneejones for the ARC.

I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. I truly enjoyed this book Lisa did an absolute job with this story!! This is book 11 in the Lilah series.

“Junior is back and stupider than ever.
When I inquire with the house manager about the artist, she can’t remember who painted it, but she does know the name of the painting itself.”

I thoroughly enjoy Lilah and Kane. Lilah makes me laugh and her self awareness is amazing. This book brings Junior back and gives Lilah pause for thought as to who it is. Kane's father is also back and causing trouble. Kane is not in the story very much because his legitimate business is being targeted and he has to take care of it. Lilah’s father is at the centre of this story after someone is murdered and the body staged with strange surroundings at the Governor’s mansion that Lilah’s father moved into. Andrew has had enough of his father and is looking for an out and Lilah is in the middle of it all. Beware, the ending will make you say what? What just happened, it can’t end here’ but it does and we have to wait to find out who survives and who doesn’t - such a nail biter.

This is book eleven in a series but it's my first to read. So I'm not sure it was hard to understand all the different characters mentioned and who belongs to whom because it shouldn't have been read as a standalone?

However I really enjoyed reading this story and Lilah is the kind of bitch you want to be once you're grown up, maybe without the murder tendencies.

Her father was just elected for governor and she's dealing with a suspicious murder case in his new mansion all while getting strange messages and having to handle her father-in-law who happens to be a drug lord.

It's full of different scenarios and enemies but Kane and Lilah seem to be the perfect team.

Guess I have to start with book 1 someday soon.

Each book in this series has a murder that Special Agent Lilah Love-Mendez needs to solve. However there is an underlying mystery that continues throughout all the books and more clues are revealed.

I couldn't wait for this latest book in this gripping series and unfortunately I was disappointed.

Unlike the other books in this series, I wasn't pulled into the story as I expected to be. This ends on a cliffhanger with more questions than anything and that cliffhanger comes quickly. It's more of a novella than what you’ve come to expect from this series.

I hope the next book gets back on track with the sustenance and gripping story that's been a part of this series.

To say Junior Has a Secret is another Lilah Love-Mendez success is an understatement! I am in awe at how Lisa continues to make these characters leap off the page and into our imaginations with a story so full of suspense and intrigue. I found myself holding my breath in every chapter anticipating everyone’s next move and being surprised at every turn. Yes, this is one hell of a cliffhanger! I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book!

Although this isn’t a physically spicy book, it is definitely one that will transport you into the jaw dropping world of the morally gray couple we can’t get enough of, Kane and Lilah!

What a great story, again, in this series! Book 11!
I had the pleasure of reading this book as an ARC, and Junior is back!
Special agent Lilah Love-Mendez is dealing with a murder, of course, and also dealing with
the father of Kane, the man who's back!
Of course there are unexpected circumstances, and it ends with a cliffhanger..
I hope the next book will be here soon!
I love the Lilah books, and they are always to short!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Junior Has a Secret is a fabulous read. This is just what I was hoping for as the Lilah Love series continues. There are plenty of twist and turns that keep you glued to the pages hoping to get some more answers. Lilah is falling the trail and you know she has those itchy knife skills she's just waiting to unlease. You have all the players in play in this one from her father to ghost and her father in law and let's not forget Junior. I love Kane and Lilah together so much. I could not put this down. I really cannot wait to see what happens in the next Lilah Love book. Go one click this today.

Junior Has a Secret by L.R. Jones is book 11 in the Lilah Love series. She is dealing with Junior…again. But, there are other familiar ‘faces’ back as well…Roberto and Ghost are in the mix. But, why?? And then…there’s Kane…always Kane…who brings his own dynamic into the mix. It is so easy to become immersed in the Lilah’s world. Love the intrigue, her smarts, the backlash, and the drive she has to move forward and persevere. This has a scream-worthy cliffhanger!!! Gotta see what happens next!!!

Hi I have just finished Junior has a secret and wow,wow I didn't have that on my bingo card for 2025,you have completely blown me and my ideas of who the main players were away. The red herrings were swimming all over the book in every direction possible. Kane and lilah what can I say the love story of the decade they are the missing piece of each other and the outside characters fit well together even if Jack is odd ,I do have a soft spot for Jay she certainly keeps him in line and on his toes .I really can't wait for the next book.

This book was good. I wish I had read the others before this one. But as this was given to me as an ARC (thank you for the opportunity) I hadn’t read any of them before. So I’m sure I’m missing out in since really good back story. But from what I did get to read in this one, I loved the characters, the mystery, and everything that surrounds it. It was it intense and Kris you wanting to know more. Trying to figure out if you know what’s going to come to next.
It was excellently written and a solid read. Definitely one worth going back and reading the others.

Well....I did not see that being Junior's secret. If you are going to read this series I highly recommend starting from the beginning so that you understand all the ins and outs of the characters as it is a very interconnected group. Some questions answers, many more pop up and I am hoping sometime soon we have all the answers we are looking for. I always enjoy being back in Lilah's world as she and Kane fight for their love many times against their own family. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book for my honest opinion.

This is book 11 in the Lilah Love series and unfortunately not as compelling as her previous books but leaves you hanging for the next book. It’s like this story is in parts not a full novel. Hopefully the next book will solve all the unanswered questions. However in saying that the book does suck you in especially if you are a Lilah and Kane fan.
I received this book as an ARC from the author.
