"星を掬う" (Scooping Stars) by Sonoko Machida. A beautiful story about a woman reuniting with her mother through a radio. The protagonist is trying to hide from her ex husband who is always taking money from her with violence. She submits one of her childhood memory about the time she took a trip with her mother one summer to this radio station in hope to win some money so she can pay her bills. For her, life was always a struggle and she kind of blames her mother for this. Just when she felt hopeless, she recieves a phone call from the radio station saying that there's somebody who listened to your story through the radio and would like to meet in person. That person knows your mother.
I LOVE all of this author's books. She pulls me into her stories with an amazing opening.
This is the opening of the story: Congratulations. We're giving you, Ms. Yoshino, 50,000 yen for your memory.
