The sticky floors and vinyl booths of local diners become stages for a chilling performance where each victim is an abusive local, fatally overdosed on insulin by an unknown assailant. As family ties and professional lines blur, FBI Agent Hailey Rock partners with her sheriff sister to sift through scandalous small-town secrets in search of a vengeful diner murderer.

I just finished Against You by Rylie Dark — book ten in her Hailey Rock FBI series — and I’ve got to say, it’s what I wanted it to be. It’s got that small-town, classic American setting that makes you feel like you’re sitting in a corner booth at the local diner… only in this one, the diners are where people wind up dead. The killer’s knocking off locals with bad histories by overdosing them on insulin, and it’s every bit as unsettling as it sounds. Hailey teams up with her sister — the town’s sheriff — and I love that part. It’s not just a crime story; it’s got that family backbone holding the whole thing together. No cheap drama, no overblown soap-opera stuff, just two women who know each other inside and out, trying to stop something ugly from tearing their town apart. The pacing’s quick — Dark doesn’t waste time with filler. You get right into it, and there are enough twists to keep you guessing without feeling like she’s trying too hard to shock you. It’s just good, solid suspense the way I like it — rooted in the characters and the place, not in gimmicks. It’s still new, so there aren’t a ton of reviews out yet, but the folks who’ve read it seem to agree — it delivers. And after ten books, it’s nice to see an author stick to the same tone and quality without letting the series run off the rails. If you like a crime story with grit, heart, and that small-town America backdrop, Against You is a safe bet.
I love the story line and that made me finish the book but unfortunately this is the worst I've read so far in this series for conflicting facts/details. Don't books get proof read anymore? Anyway about to start book 11 as I've already purchased and I really want to know if Hailey gets VD.
Even after 10 books this series is still fresh and interesting. The characters are becoming more developed and their interactions with each other are integral to the plot. The plot has enough depth and holds your attention.
