Emerald Queen: The Tale of Teia Tephi

Rate this book
While King Nebuchadnezzar's army ravages Jerusalem, Princess Tephi, the teenage daughter of King Zedekiah, cowers in her chambers, hoping for a swift and merciful death. However, rescue comes from the most unlikely hero – the aged prophet Jeremiah.

The prophet absconds with Tephi to hidden catacombs under the Temple where a clutch of priceless treasures hides, including the legendary Ark of the Covenant. After outlasting the siege, Jeremiah whisks Tephi on an extraordinary adventure, spanning three continents, and ending up in the distant Isles of Tarshish, specifically the Emerald Isle of Ériu.

Bravery is paramount in this mythical land as Tephi's destiny unfolds; including a queenly anointing, her husband being selected by arrow, and a battle history will immortalize. Through it all Tephi clings to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as she faces numerous iterations of the false god Ba'al and his warmongering worshipers.

I just finished reading "Emerald Queen: The Tale of Teia Tephi" by Jennifer Hartz, and I'm still reeling from the experience. This book is a masterclass in historical fiction, with the author's meticulous research and attention to detail transporting me to a world of ancient kingdoms and forgotten lore.

But what truly sets this book apart is the way it brings to life the story of Tephi, a Judean princess who becomes the queen of Ireland. Tephi's love for the Torah of Yahweh is a constant theme throughout the book, and it's impossible not to be swept up in her passion and devotion. As I read, I found myself falling deeply in love with Tephi's character, and imagining that I was right there with her on her journey to the Emerald Isle.

Hartz's writing is engaging and immersive, making it easy to become fully invested in Tephi's story. The historical context is richly detailed, and the author's use of biblical and Irish mythology adds depth and complexity to the narrative. But it's Tephi's inner journey that truly shines, as she navigates the challenges and triumphs of her journey with courage, faith, and determination.

One of the things that impressed me most about this book was the way it wove together history, mythology, and faith to create a compelling and inspiring story. Hartz's research is evident on every page, and her love for the subject matter shines through in her writing.

Overall, I highly recommend "Emerald Queen: The Tale of Teia Tephi" to anyone looking for a compelling and inspiring story. If you're a fan of historical fiction, biblical history, or just great storytelling in general, this book is a must-read. And if you're looking for a heroine who will capture your heart and imagination, look no further than Tephi.

I really wanted to like this book.

Positives first: it is pretty well-written stylistically, pretty easy to follow the thread of the story (though the jumps between times are fairly large and frequent), the theology was handled well, and it’s well-researched.

However, it has spice and I am a no-spice reader. It’s gory too, but I could get past that. Explicit s3xual content is a no-go, however.

“It’s an adult book.”
Okay. And I’m an adult. I don’t want in on any other adult’s bedroom scene, regardless of whether it’s fact or fiction. It is saddening that our modern culture has normalized this in books. I don’t have any friends I would recommend spice to.

I read up to the first explicit scene and then warily skimmed the rest of the book. If I hadn’t been so excited for it and hadn’t been completely unsuspecting that the spice would be there, I would have DNF’ed immediately. I gave it a chance. But that wasn’t the only scene. 😒

Not a spice-free read, very violent and gory. I felt like a number of the deaths were unnecessary and the main character didn’t grow much, she just got bashed with grief over and over.

Without the spice it would have been a 3 or 3.5 star read.
