Distinguished Rogues #13

Un Noël enchanté (Les Messieurs t. 13)

Rate this book

My Christmas novella is out today so I thought I'd share an excerpt here to celebrate the rerelease...

Meg gaped, and then snapped her mouth shut. That was Lord Clement? She barely recognized him.
As a boy he’d been skinny with a shock of dark hair that he’d always been brushing from his eyes. Those longish locks were gone now, replaced by a shorter cropped style that revealed a pair of intelligent eyes set in an attractive face.
Meg glanced at Lady Vyne quickly, and discovered Lord Clement had grown up to resemble his mother. But he was far taller and broad shouldered than even her brother was. He was handsome now. More so than she’d ever imagined a man could be.
Lord Clement was unlike anything Meg was prepared to meet.
Meg averted her eyes as her cheeks suddenly heated.
But she couldn’t help but peek again. Lord Clement and Hector embraced, shook hands vigorously, and expressed such joy to see each other that Meg immediately felt envious.
“And here I was merely hoping you would write me a letter before New Year,” Lord Clement exclaimed.
“Well, we’re here in the flesh,” Hector said, throwing his arms wide. “Ready to make merry with you and yours.”
Lord Clement glanced toward Meg and seemed to freeze in place for a moment. He quickly recovered and smiled at her. “And who is this beauty you have brought with you? I must have an introduction immediately.”
“Surely you don’t need to be introduced to my sister after all these years?” Hector teased with a hearty laugh that made Meg cringe.
She lifted her chin and looked Lord Clement in the eye, eager to get the greeting over and done with. “My lord.”
Lord Clement’s lips parted in obvious surprise. “Lady Margaret?”

Such a delightful story about two wonderful characters that meet at a time they truly needed each other. Still mourning the loss of her parents, Margaret's brother takes her to the estate of his friend Otis, who she remembers from her childhood.
Otis is smitten when he sees her and she cannot think him but handsome.
But it takes this couple several twist and turns to get to their happy ever after which kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I loved Otis.. He is the hero that warms the heart.. Truly enjoyed this story!

A delightful novella with wonderful characters that will make you want to keep reading. Margaret is so lovely and yet hers is a lonely soul, mourning the loss of her parents, as well as not seeing much of her brother at all. Add the fact that he practically dumps her on his friend Otis and family and her humiliation is complete!! Having met Otis many years earlier, she is in awe at how handsome he's become:) Otis, for his part, is mesmerized by her and would love nothing more than to court her but first, there's a few problems to solve....as well as a bet with his father!

Although the story takes place at Christmas time, there really isn't very much mentioned about it and only near the end does it mention a Christmas tree and decorations. When I read a Christmas novel, I love to hear about the outings, the gathering of the greenery, the special meals, etc. That is my only complaint about this story:)

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

An Enchanting Story

What an enjoyable Regency novella! Often romantic novellas don't seem to have enough space for developing characterization or plot, and authors often resort to the dreaded information dump. Blissfully, this author and book did not have any problems on those counts. In the hero and heroine, she has created complex characters who are misunderstood and bullied by those who should love them, her older brother for the heroine and his father for the hero. She's also created rather intense family dynamics on both sides. The hero's mother is certainly a sympathetic character, trapped in a cruel marriage but still with a heart of a woman who seeks to help the daughter of a friend and only wants happiness for her son, even if it is at her own expense. The heroine's brother had given her a wrong impression of the hero, who happens to be one of his better friends. The heroine imagines him to be as much of a rogue as her brother and as uncaring. But she is soon disabused of that notion, and I loved the way that the hero treated her and his mother and younger siblings. I’ve read a fair number of books lately, but I don't think I've seen such a kind, considerate, and good-hearted hero in a long time; I loved the way he treated the women and children in his family. He's the perfect swoon-worthy historical romantic hero. This book was a pleasure to read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

ONE ENTRANCING JOURNEY!!!
Sensational! Heather not only hit the motherload with this brilliantly composed work of art, riding one arresting storyline and gripping plot, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight. Blurred lines and crossed boundaries, expectations are weighed and balanced, flinging this jewel forward without a hitch, kicking it into overdrive, throwing it into a hissy with an life-changing realization. Shenanigans, escapades and mayhem rule the roost displaying the drama, turmoil, intrigue, sizzling suspense and intense situations, along with a double dose of moxie, you have one intoxicating masterpiece. Quirky mishaps and surprising happenstance swirl with the formidable trials and taxing tribulations, spinning alongside the stunning twists and wicked turns, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. The undeniable attraction and intense chemistry sizzles as each layer is peeled back exposing a deep connection and amplifying affections, binding them to one another beautifully. The characters, banter, dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, blend and flow, transforming into genuinely charismatic personalities. The scenes are so graphically descriptive you have no trouble picturing each scenario as they play out perfectly. Fantastic job Heather, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.

Meg was prepared to spend a quiet Christmas at home with her brother, Hector, since they had lost their mother the previous year and then their father in the current year. She is quite dismayed to be forced to spend the season with a friend, Otis, of her brother and his family. Meg believes that Otis is a bad influence and a rogue who was the reason for her brother spending little time at home. She soon learns that Otis is a rather nice man who loves his family and would do anything for his siblings and mother (his father is a big old turd that doesn’t deserve such nice people). Once Meg realizes that her brother has lied to her time and again and that he would rather spend time elsewhere, she loosens up and has fun with Otis and his family. It isn’t long before Meg and Otis develop feelings for each other but it isn’t smooth sailing. This is definitely worth reading to find out how things work out for everyone and to maybe understand some of the characters a little better.

Meg is in a carriage heading to her brother's best friends Christmas party and Hector wants her to marry this season. Since he had inherited he had changed. Reaching their destination it doesn't take long to realise that her brother had lied about Otis and that Otis is someone she finds herself attracted to. Otis is a family man eager to protect is mother and siblings from his father. Otis is rich as a result of an inheritance from his grandfather. A bet, a dare, his father proposes that he marries in three months or face exile. He agrees, but adds, who he decides. A sweet, slow burn romance with stolen kisses Otis begins to win Megs heart.

I LOVED this story ❤️❤️ it is really well written, engaging and compelling story. The characters are likeable, relateable and Otis is swoonworthy!! The story is from dual POVs and reveals the thoughts feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship and navigate through the many obstacles that arise as a reader can empathize with. There's an epilogue and a HEA

One Enchanted Christmas is a Christmas novella in “Winter Wishes - a Regency Holiday Romance Anthology.” Also known as story number thirteen in the Distinguished Rogues series. It’s a sweet story. Delicate and gentle.

3+ stars

Lady Margaret Stockwick is still mourning the loss of her beloved parents when her brother whisks her away from the family estate. Unbeknownst to Meg, he has no plans to allow her to return. Instead, he’ll see Meg ensconced in London, to be married off as soon as possible.

Lord Otis Clement spends all his time at his family’s estate, the better to protect his mother and siblings. But his greatest wish is to remove them from beneath the thumb of his scheming father.

Otis and Meg have reunited after meeting briefly as children. Their attraction grows after they tentatively spend some time together. Their chemistry sweet.

I recommend this novella for an endearing read.

This is my first time reading something by Ms. Boyd and I really enjoyed it. It was a well-written story and Ms. Boyd did a nice job of making the story come to life with her writing and really pulling me in to the story. It's an intriguing read with wonderfully developed characters and a storyline that kept me totally engrossed through the very end. Otis an Margaret made a lovely couple and the chemistry between them was undeniable. Ms. Boyd did an excellent job of developing these characters and adding a layer of complexity to them despite the fact that this was a shorter story and and not as easy to accomplish as in a full length novel. This was a wonderful story and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

I truly enjoyed reading the entwining of two hearts into one. After a preconceived notion of the H because of her brother, the h realizes he is nothing that she thought. He is everything she has always wanted. However, his domineering father, vile man that he is, tries to put the H's life over a barrel. He demands he marries the woman he has picked out for him. They made a wager. But the H was about to hoodwink his father without him realizing that he had already lost the bargain. Now all the H had to do was find a wife in three months; someone he wanted to love and cherish. A wonderful story. I wish there had been an epilogue. I wonder if the other woman ended up marrying the love of her life. It also would have been nice to see what children the H/h would have. A great little story.

The story of Meg and Otis is a lovely quick read. The settings are very well described, as are all the assorted characters. I thought the dialogue and banter was very good. There was no hugely dramatic suspense, but it was written so well as to be a page turner because you want to find out what will happen next. There is considerable and assorted family drama, all very entertaining. There is some kissing and a brief explicit scene that is not overdone, and takes place upon acceptance of a marriage proposal.

Meg just wanted to be left alone to mourn her parents, but her wastrel brother insisted they go to his friend Otis’ family estate for the holidays, a friend whom she thought was the reason her brother had been led astray. Otis loves his mother and siblings and will do anything to make them happy and take them away from his cruel manipulative father. I thought it was sweet that he wanted to continue reading together the book Meg started with her father before his death and he was great with his rambunctious siblings. There are sex scenes, so it’s not a clean romance. But there were plenty of funny and sweet moments.

Delightful story! Otis’s father demands he marry in the next three months. His father has also invited the woman he wants Otis to marry and her father to celebrate Christmas with them. Otis’s mother has invited Margaret and her brother, Hector, who is Otis’s best friend, for the holidays as well. Things get complicated. This is a quick engaging. story with easily imaginable characters who will capture your attention and heart.

An enjoyable short story.
Six months into her mourning period for her second parent, Meg’s brother whisks her away to Derbyshire and his friend’s house. Meg hasn’t seen Otis Clement for over a decade but the impression she has formed from her brother’s conversations leads her to believe he is a rogue. However when she meets him again, he is not what she expected. Only one wrong note with regard to Hector’s estate, which you would expect to be entailed.
I originally read this as part of the Winter Wishes Boxset and freely give this review.

3.5⭐️’s

I enjoyed this story although there was something about the telling by that didn’t entirely flow for me. Again, it could just be the novella format that leaves some threads being dropped and everything feeling like it wraps up so quickly without some resolutions coming to rest.
Overall, it was a sweet story in which I found the hero to be quite endearing.

*Read as an installment in the Winter Wishes anthology.
