Surveying the proposed site for a high-end golf course should have been a breeze for spunky landscape architect Sophie Smith. But when this born-and-bred city girl is suddenly—and quite literally—swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy on horseback, she realizes that the country life has some serious (and seriously steamy) possibilities. That is, until she finds out exactly who her smokin' hot wrangler really is.
Cowboy and tribal lawyer Jake Lodge is desperately trying to block the development. And if that means playing hardball—and being every inch the shark lawyer—so be it. But Sophie is a distraction he didn't expect. A distraction that makes his blood burn.
Two different worlds. Two opposing sides. And when they finally give in to the exquisite temptation, the consequences will shake the foundation of both of their lives...
New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti has published more than seventy novels and novellas, which have been translated into several languages, with millions of copies sold world-wide. Her books have received Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus starred reviews, favorable Washington Post and New York Times Book Reviews, and been included in Amazon best books of the year.
Rebecca has ridden in a locked Chevy trunk, has asked the unfortunate delivery guy to release her from a set of handcuffs, and has discovered the best silver mine shafts in which to bury a body…all in the name of research. Honest.
I absolutely adored this book! I read it with a big goofy grin on my face! It wasn't the greatest literary achievement but it was so much fun! And Jake made a very nice addition to my book boyfriends *waggles eyebrows*
Jake is a incredibly sexy badass country lawyer who won in the Supreme court, a loving father and a dominant but caring alpha. One hundred percent drool-worthy! The way he takes charge is sexy, but there is nothing sexier than a father who is wonderful with his kid.
Tall, broad, yet somehow graceful, he approached from his truck, a sexy predator in civilized clothing.
Jake's eyes darkened to coal as he ran his gaze over her from head to toe. He turned back to Gregton and slowly shook his head, his jaw tightening to iron. "No. You insult her, and we're stepping outside."
And it is set in gorgeous Montana! I want to live there. The people was so welcoming of Sophie. And I can totally get why the land didn't want a golf course on it.
And all the other amazing bits! The meddling small-town, the beautiful boots, the breathtaking descriptions of the landscape and the hot times Against the Wall! For me, this was a winner!
Thanks to Karen and Pavlina for reading it with me!
And my biggest thanks to Entangled Brazen and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC. It was a pleasure - as usual!
Against the Wall is book one in the Montana Mavericks series by Rebecca Zanetti. I have been wanting to read this series for-e-ver!!! Ms. Zanetti is re-releasing the series and so thankfully is putting them in Kindle Unlimited so I’m finally able to read them. This first book was so amazing and I’m hooked!
Sophie Smith is a landscape architect who specializes in designing golf courses for her Uncle’s company, Green Par Designs. She has designed a course on a lake in Mineral Lake, Montana and is going to be staying on site while trying to get the approval of both the county commissioners and from the local Kooskia Tribe. What she hadn’t counted on was Jake Lodge.
Jake is the oldest of the Lodge siblings, two other brothers and one little sister. He is also the attorney for the Kooskia Tribe and is known for always winning his cases. He is also a single dad to an adorable six year old daughter, Leila, who has the entire family wrapped around her little finger.
Jake and Sophie and a pretty fun meet cute. At the exact moment, Sophie might not have agreed!! It didn’t take long for the sparks to fly. Sophie was there for business, though, and getting involved with not only the attorney for the tribe but a part of the family she needed approval from for her golf course, was a bad idea. Jake, though, had a different opinion. He wanted Sophie. He knew there was something there between them and he wanted to explore it, very thoroughly!
I fell in love with this entire family and town! I loved the way that they so very discreetly manipulated Sophie to do things. Usually before she even knew what she had agreed to. It was like they just saw her and knew what she really needed. Especially Jake. He got her like no one else ever had. And he awakened her like no one else ever had. Together they were sizzling! Sophie was slowly realizing the dreams she had slowly buried were still there and almost seemed possible in this wonderful community. She found family and acceptance with Jake’s family. There is also danger, though, in this little town. Some are not happy about the golf course and want her gone.
I loved everything about this book. Now I can’t wait to read the stories of Jake’s siblings. Next will be Jake’s brother, Quinn’s book who is also the Sheriff! And the woman he couldn’t seem to convince to give him a chance, Juliet, in book two, Under the Covers. Since it’s already on my Kindle, I’ll be starting it in just about five minutes!
City girl and Landscape Architect Sophie Smith is surveying the proposed site for a high-end-golf course which should have been easy. But when she literally is suddenly and quite literally swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy on horseback – country life has suddenly become a lot more interesting. Who is this hot smokin’ wrangler?
He might be a psychotic throwback to the pioneer days, but he belonged on a Calvin Klein underwear billboard.
Cowboy Jake Lodge is part of the Sooskia tribe and also their Tribal lawyer trying to block the development. He’s every inch the shark lawyer and loves to play hardball. Sophie is a distraction he didn’t expect. Two different worlds and opposing sides, will they give in to the temptation laid in front of them?
This is delightfully written and I cannot wait to learn more about the secondary characters i.e.: Jake’s brothers Quinn and Colt. I particularly love Jake’s daughter Leila, whose innocence shines through the book and adds to the humor at the most awkward moments. The romance is lovely and is well paced. If you enjoy some hot tumbling with some serious hot cowboys this is definitely a winner!
When Jake swept Sophie off her feet and on top his horse it was like something out of the movies, but she won’t be distracted by some cowboy, no matter how sinful he looks in chaps. But Jake has more surprises up his sleeve, the moment she meets him as the Tribe’s Lawyer whose main goal is to oppose the build of a new golf course near their sacred land, the course she designed. Sophie has plenty to learn, as the designer of the course she may in theory have created a perfect setup but she knows nothing about the land she plans to build it on.
“The land has been whispering since you arrived. You just need to listen.”
Tempted by the city girl, Jake finds himself being set up by his kin to show her the lay of the land and give her a tour of what she would potentially disturb. This small town is unlike anything she has ever encountered, and being a part of something special calls on a need she didn’t even know she had. She was happy with the life she lives, right? so why does it feel like something or someone is missing. Jake is a widow and a single dad, and the more time he spends with Sophie the more he wants something other than a friendly relationship.
“All of me just likes all of you. A lot.”
Sophie can’t help but hide behind her wall; scared of how this man makes her feel, how this town begs her to stay...there is something here, she’s just not sure she is willing to risk it all to see it through. When the battle begins and the lines are drawn, will she see reason or will she see it as betrayal, either way she doesn’t belong here no matter how much her wants her to stay…
Against The Wall was such a heartwarming sexy read, with a delicious cowboy and the little lady who caught his eye. Sophie wasn’t a broken girl, sure she had her reservations, ones she had to work through on her own, but she is smart and with the help of a meddling town everything becomes clearer. Jake is a single dad, who would do anything to win, he is a prideful man that protects his family, his culture and the land. It was sexy, it was sweet, it was funny and just all around a great read, perfect for what I was looking for when I picked up the book; these are the kind of stories that can never let you down.
It is OK read. The theme of romance cowboy is not something new. I wish Miss Zanetti brings something new to the atory but she is not.
Against the Wall is typical clean romance. A bit boring with that same formula alpha male and damsel in distress. The conversation is also typical boring.
Montana Mavericks book 1. Contemporary romance with erotic elements. Sophie is swept off feet, literally, by a cowboy on a horse as they race by. Sophie is entranced with the sexy cowboy but soon learns he’s a lawyer directly opposed to the project she working on. They shouldn’t become involved but the attraction is overpowering.
A sexy, hot relationship that moves fast and impetuously. He is demanding and she is intoxicated by pheromones. It was steamy and entrancing. His preference for sex outside where the chances of their getting caught were seemingly high added to the tension and erotism.
From the moment they first meet, Jake Lodge sweeps Sophie Smith completely off her feet. Literally not figuratively. A hot lawyer/rancher is hard to resist but Sophie gives it her best shot in Against the Wall.
Montana Kooskia tribe member Jake and Landscape Architect Sophie have what can only be considered an awkward first meeting when Jake rescues Sophie from certain death via horse trampling by actually picking her up and putting her on the front of his horse. Damn, that’s hot! Once the horse action calms down and Sophie’s introduced to Jake, his two brothers and sister things get a little uncomfortable. Sophie’s familiarizing herself with the land she hopes her newly designed golf course will be built on. Jake and his family belong to the powerful Indian tribe opposing the new development. Jake, obviously thinking with his little head, doesn’t see this as an obstacle in his quest to seduce Sophie, even though he’s the lawyer working to stop Sophie and the development company she works for. The man’s got a pair on him, I’ll give him that.
With the help of Jake’s family these two get thrown together quite a bit. The sexing soon commences and they embark on a sexy and engaging relationship, even though they both know Sophie’s headed back to the city the first chance she gets. Except Sophie’s starting to like everything Jake and life in Montana has to offer and Jake just likes Sophie.
“I want your heart.” His mouth dipped to replace his hand. “You already have mine."
This book isn’t nearly the cliché I’ve made out to be. Jake and Sophie are both well developed and highly entertaining characters. They both have baggage that makes admitting to the other how badly they want to move forward with the relationship difficult, but nothing ever felt forced and the pacing of the story seemed just right. Jake’s family is awesome and collectively they work together to try and show Sophie and Jake that the possibility of making a life together isn’t so far fetched. The picture of Montana conveyed and the setting for this story were so beautiful that I had absolutely no problem believing Sophie would consider giving up life in San Francisco for life in small town Montana. Sign me up!
Against the Wall most definitely exceeded my expectations for a light, quick contemporary romance. Fingers crossed we’ll also get the stories of Quinn, Colton and Dawn Lodge in the very near future.

Against the Wall gave me one more reason to never turn down the chance to read a book by Rebecca Zanetti! Sophia (or Sophie as she prefers) is a fantastic artist whose job is to design alluring golf courses and her latest client wants her to convince the Native tribe to allow them to break ground on her plan. It should be an easy enough thing to do as this golf course will bring in jobs and tourists. However, the tribe isn't having it and Jake Lodge is just the lawyer to make their meaning clear. He's all man and he commands attention, whether he's sporting dusty cowboy gear or rocking an Armani suit. Butting heads and swatting at irresistible temptation, Sophie has no intention of backing down, no matter how much she wants to submit.
This was an easy, romantic read with tiny bits of small town drama and intriguing side characters to liven things up. I can already tell that some of these characters, Jake's brothers especially, are going to feature in books to come and I'm glad that this isn't the last I'll see of any of them. I fell in love with this family's dynamic! As easy as a read as this was... I had issues with the female lead. Sophie was strong and spunky, but I wasn't a fan of her irrationality. She pushed and pushed with flimsy excuses and one part in particular (potential pregnancy) turned the tide on my affection for her. However, it was all resolved fairly quickly and with a little suspenseful surprise, I got my happy ending and a special little epilogue.
Mah... It was not bad, but it wasn't so good either. Average. It seemed rushed and nothing really was completely explained: the relationship between Sophia and her mother/stepfather; between Jack and his wife; between Sophia and Preston; between Jack and Concerned Citizens Group... There're so many things that were not explained and they should have been in order to make the story ring true. The sex was hot and Jack is described as a uber-yummy Native American cowboy. Very dominant and charged, but Sophie...??? She was like a little submissive wanting to be kick-a$$ but never making it! How she reacts ?
Oh!
Oh!
That's it???!!! Oh???
No, I didn't like her at all!
I'll still read the next book hoping that it will be better.
This book was ok. I liked the way Jake and Sophie started their relationship. They were definitely attracted to each other and their steamy times were pretty hot. Neither wanted more than a fling, but due to a small surprise they make things permanent. I didn't really believe that Jake wanted Sophie forever. Also it really bugged me that this was his second time having an oops and then a wedding. We got no info on the hero's recent sexual history, but he seemed very practiced and had a drawer of condoms next to the bed. It makes me wonder since he is a single parent. When they started getting hot and heavy it seemed like his daughter disappeared- I guess she was at her grandparents house. I wish the accidental oops didn't happen and Jake would have fallen head over heels and begged Sophie to stay just because he loved her. Oh well! Safety gang safe Thanks to CC for the loan
My biggest problem with this book was the bland writing style. The character set up wasn't bad but the author didn't do much with the story. It was very unexciting and predictable. This author's writing style is just not for me, it comes off as juvenile. This read like a Harlequin Desire book but with hotter love scenes. There were a few hot love scenes, I liked those and the portrayal of modern Native American characters.

Golf course designer Sophia flies out to Montana to rally the city council to support a new golf course in the area. When Sophie "runs into" Jake, a hot local "cowboy" on horseback, sparks fly.......until Sophie realizes Jake is also the local tribe's lawyer. The tribe will fight tooth and nail to stop the golf course as it's not good for the land and the lake it borders. The attraction between Jake and Sophia is mutual but being on opposite ends of the bargaining table is not conducive to a budding relationship. Can they get past their job loyalty and Jake's native protectiveness to the land to make it work?
I really liked this book. The character development was good, the chemistry palpable, and the storyline kept me interested. I was tuned in to find out if Sophie would have to choose between her job and her relationship with uber hot Jake. The town rallied behind them even though Sophie was essentially "the enemy." The golf course was not going to happen if they could stop it.....On one hand Jake was sweet and romantic, then he was domineering and alpha both in the courtroom and bedroom. Those two could heat up the sheets! The scenes were hot! But could all that outweigh the battle ahead in the courtroom? Read and find out.
I'm looking forward to the next installment in the Maverick Montana series.
Arc from Netgalley on behalf of Entangled publishing.
Sophie is literally swept off her feet by sexy cowboy/lawyer Jack Lodge when he almost runs over her with his horse. He immediately feels an attraction to this woman, who would much rather walk away from this dangerously, attractive man.
Sophie is in town on business and doesn't have anytime to be distracted. Unfortunately she doesn't know what she is up against as Jack and his family see to it that she stay.
"I caught her. I get to keep her".
I really enjoyed this fast paced, sexy romance. It is almost a guarantee that when I pick up a Brazen book that it is going to be full of all the things I have come to love in my romance books. Sexy, domineering, alpha men , feisty woman, great secondary characters and really great settings. All these things keep me coming back for more and Rebecca Zanetti has delivered them all in Against the Wall. I am really looking forward to seeing more of the Maverick Montana series, maybe Quinns book? Love a sexy sheriff :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rereading this book that I still love so much with an ARC because it will be reissued with a very pretty new cover (thanks for the ARC Rebecca Zanetti 🥰)
I rarely read cowboy romances (too often cliché ><) but Rebecca Zanetti is an author that I devour without moderation so when I saw that I had missed one of her romances ...
A light, sexy romance that has all the ingredients of a good romance : a talented, funny and endearing heroine, a sexy, intelligent and badass hero (a Native American cowboy, lawyer and rich =D), a small village in Montana and a legal battle over the construction of a golf course ><
In short, a romance that is quickly devoured while making you want to move to Montana =D
This was a short, sweet, sexy, and fun read! Landscape Architect Sophie is in Montana working on the development of a golf resort and Jake Lodge is a Tribal Lawyer (and a yummy cowboy), and single Dad to adorable precious 6 year old daughter Layla. He’s also working to stop the development of the resort.
When Sophie is quite literally swept off her feet on onto a horse by the sexy cowboy Jake. Sparks fly and as with any alpha, Jake can be very persuasive...Sophie tries to resist but Jake has a really hard time taking no for an answer. Sophie is a loner and has been abandoned more than once by the people in her life, she has learned to be alone and not count on anyone except herself.
Next thing you know Sophie is becoming part of this small community and Jake, his family, and the entire community have steamrolled their way into her life….and heart.
As I said this is a fun sexy short read with a nice epilogue. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the Lodge/Freeze siblings books!!!!
Originally read: 3/15/2014 Reread on: 9/01/21 & 7/03/25
This is an opposites attract tale that is really sexy and a lot of fun. This is an early Rebecca Zanetti and it shows that, so I'm forgiving of the uneven pace, sudden POV shifts and other details that new authors are prone to miss. Overall, I enjoyed it. It was fun, had an itty, bitty suspense element and the all characters were likable. Jake's daughter stole the show, but that's what little girls normally do.
City girl Sophie Smith is not going to let a little thing like the opposition of a community stand in the way of her first solo project. This golf course and development means not only proving herself to her uncle, it means keeping the company afloat. She will not fail. When she is swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy, it takes all her focus to keep her eyes on the prize and off Jake's superb attributes. But when she find out who he really is, well, let the games begin.
Please skip over my review if you don't wish to read any negativity. Possible minor spoilers for book. May I just say ~ I feel terrible giving this book just 2 stars. I love love love Rebecca Zanetti's Dark Protector series. It is fabulous. That is why I struggled rating this book. I just could not connect with these two characters in this book. It pains me to say this. I liked the secondary characters more than the MC's. Sophie/Sophia was kick ass in her mind and then milk toast when her mouth actually opened. She was basically a doormat. "I'm mad at you" then in her mind as he of course moves in to kiss etc ....Oh you're gonna sex me ...well ok never mind then. You've got to be kidding me. Jake just pretty much ran roughshod right over her.....all the time and she just let him. And don't get me started with her response to I also had an issue with the fact that Jake's mom pretty much took over Sophie's life too. Anyway - I will read book 2 as I want to see what happens with Quinn and the art gallery owner.
Really enjoyed this one. And I seriously loved Jake! He can go all primitive on me anytime he wants to. ;)
It’s funny but I have yet to actually read a bad book that’s been released from Entangled publishing house. And this is not me praising or trying to sell the publishing house, but in truth, just me being as honest as I can. So when I saw that this was up for review I took the chance on it without really giving the summary much thought. I just knew that it would be an enjoyable read and I’d get my romance fix – which I did – but I liked it more than I thought I would.
Sophie Smith is a landscape architect for a company that designs golf courses. So she’s in Montana looking over a prime piece of real estate that has nothing to do with where the golf course is supposed to be built, but on the land that is nearby it that is home to the Kooskia tribe’s lake; A lake which the tribe does not want to become polluted and is the main reason for the opposition that has come up against the construction of the course. Sophie then finds herself surveying the land and its surroundings to prove that no such thing will come from the golf course being built in that area. But Sophie is in for an awakening, one which I would not call rude but very, very, sexy.
“I caught her. I get to keep her.”
Jake Lodge is the tribe’s lawyer and a hot cowboy to boot! His first meeting with Sophie literally has her swept off her feet… and onto horseback. He’s a very imposing figure, literally. He’s this big, strong and rugged 100% Native American cowboy that is not just intensely attractive, but highly intelligent and has a good sense of humor.
A guy with looks and brains and also a great dad to little Leila. What more could you ask for? Alas, he’s asking for a bit too much – from Sophie that is. Jake is not some back town, hick lawyer, but a highly regarded one in his state and in the country’s capital. So when Sophie finds out that he’s the one defending the tribe she feels a little blindsided because she wasn’t expecting the gorgeous guy that flirted with her whilst knowing who she was is essentially her opponent in this case.
But Jake is a force of a man that you shouldn’t expect to go up against and have any hopes of beating – inside and outside the courtroom. He’s very bold and takes the lead in proposing that he and Sophie get together for the period of time that she’s in town, but like all great laid plans, things don’t always work out the way we expect them to and things between the two of them really start to heat up.
Sophie becomes close with the Lodge family, especially with Jake’s mom Loni. Spending time with his family gives her the chance to see how different every family is and what she’d missed out on growing up with a mother who only wanted to marry rich, a father who was MIA and a stepfather who could not have cared less. The only shining light for her was her stepfather’s brother – and her boss, Uncle Nathan. He’s always encouraged her to follow her dreams and her dream is to just be able to paint. And the Lodge family is able to bring her into their close-knit family and help her to see that she can have her dream, that there’s no one holding her back but herself, but sometimes feeling obligated can be a bitch so giving up and letting go can be a challenge.
I feel like I’m giving away too much of the story already so I’ll just stop right there and say that if you’re a fan of Zanetti’s you will want to pick up this book. This is my first time reading her work and besides the really interesting and diverse characters, her vivid descriptions of the town and the land were so beautiful that I wished I was there while reading the book!
Overall, a really enjoyable read with sexy Native American cowboys – yep, there’s more than one! A little quirky but strong heroine and great secondary characters, you’ll want to check this one out. My only issue was with the ending and how it felt kind of abrupt but that was basically because I wanted more, so that wasn’t really a turn off. Looking forward to the next book, which I believe is Jake’s brother Quinn.
An Advance copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This review and more can be seen on Fic Talk
I sort of read this book on a whim. I had never heard of it or the author. But when I read the blurb I was intrigued. A hot alpha cowboy....yes, please.
Well this one did not disappoint. It was a quick, steamy, entertaining read. The hero and heroine didn't really get on my nerves. There wasn't a bunch of mis-communication and jouvenile angst.
Sophie finds herself in rural Montana trying to convince the locals to build a golf course on some land. While there she meets Jake...
Dayum Jake was yummy! Super alpha, super hot. I guess it was kind of insta-love-y....but not in a junior high way like it is in most books. They don't really date or anything....they just f*ck. Which was hot, by the way. And then over time (albeit not very much time) they do fall in love.
There wasn't a lot of depth in the story. But all of the characters were likeable and it was an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for something quick and light-hearted with some sexy times!
Who doesn't everyone love a Cowboy ? Well here the author introduces a whole family of single, gorgeous Cowboys and to start with she gives us Jake the lawyer. Jake's a single dad looking out for his family and tribe when he quite literally sweeps more than a handful off her feet ! Sophie has a job to do and that's to get her plans for a golf course approved so she hasn't got time for any sexy shenanigans with the guy whose determined to stop her or has she ? This was a sexy straightforward read about a lonely woman finally finding out just where she belongs. I loved that this family are native American as it added a touch I hadn't expected. I particularly enjoyed the way everyone was there for each other. I did think Sophie was a pushover at times but when faced with such a controlling alpha male as Jake who could blame her ? Fun, sexy and sweet as well and definitely a story to make me smile. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I was introduced to Rebecca Zanetti’s writing with The Dark Protectors, so when I read she was starting another project my interest was piqued. I started seeing teasers for Against the Wall and saw it was a cowboy type story. I wasn’t really into that genre never have been. Then I saw something on FB wanting review readers to sign up. I did knowing I would never be selected because I’m not a blogger or a writer. I just read. Well I was selected to my surprise, received the review copy and started reading it the next evening. OMG from the first paragraph in the first chapter this book started off with an adrenaline rush. You are introduced to most of the main characters in the first couple of pages and holy cow how you are introduced is a mental picture of amazing. Against the wall is a true love story from the start. There’s romance, emotional conflict, and danger and of course sex. Now I know where the title came from “impaled her against the wall.”
Sophie Smith is an artist at heart, and works for her Uncle designing golf courses. She is in Montana to try and persuade the Kooskia Tribe Leaders to allow her client to build the golf course near their reservation. And now the fun begins. I really don’t want to give too much away on the story line. But let’s just say Jake Lodge (Tribal Attorney) becomes an unexpected obstacle for Sohpie in more ways than one, and that the town has a sweet way of manipulating Sophie to do different projects for them so she’ll stay longer (that’s all I’ll say on that subject). Both Jake and Sophie have their fair share of insecurities/apprehensions/fears whatever you want to call it. But what truly good romance/love story doesn’t have their main characters fighting an internal battle to not make the same mistakes twice. I found the characters in this story loveable and so real. The Lodge brothers Jake, Quinn and Colton along with their baby sister Dawn are so unbelievably close. While reading your realize the entire Kooskia reservation is tight knit and like family. Jake is a single dad and his daughter Leila will just warm your heart. She’s such a cutie and has her Uncle’s and everyone else wrapped around her little finger. Jake’s Mom Loni and the Tribal Chief (Jake’s grandfather) are the match makers so to speak, and Leila also has her hand in this. Then you have a dream character “Bob” who pops up every time Sophie sleeps. I just love him. Hmmm I wonder if he’s the land talking, I guess you’ll have to read and form your own opinion. I hope he shows up in the other books LOL. I’m not going to give anything away with this book. IT IS A MUST READ and you truly will not be disappointed.
Rebecca this is a grand slam in my opinion and I’m giving it 5*. Kudos to you. I absolutely can’t wait for the next installment.
I absolutely adored this book! I read it with a big goofy grin on my face! It wasn't the greatest literary achievement but it was so much fun! And Jake made a very nice addition to my book boyfriends *waggles eyebrows* This was a short sweet, sexy, fun read! Really enjoyed this one. And I seriously loved Jake! He can go all primitive on me anytime he wants to. ;) Giddy Up!!! I sort of read this book on a whim. Sexy, alpha, cowboy brothers! Great book! Going straight to the next one. I thought this was going to be a typical cowboy-meets-city girl story, but there was something about the writing that made it special. When looking at reading this book, I knew I would be reading two pretty dark books either side of it. So I knew i needed something sweet, light and fun and this book was the perfect choice. It had such a great balance of humour, storyline and romance. I really liked all of the characters and the sense of family and love completely won my heart. Quick, fun and angst-free.
In the first of a brand new series from Rebecca Zanetti called the Maverick Montana, AGAINST THE WALL is a glimpse into the life of Landscape Architect Sophie Smith. Jake is a incredibly sexy badass country lawyer who won in the Supreme court, a loving father and a dominant but caring alpha. Landscape Architect Sophie is in Montana working on the development of a golf resort and dreamy Jake Lodge is the Tribal Lawyer/smokin' hot cowboy working to stop the development of the resort. Sophie Smith meets Jake Lodge when she travels from San Francisco to Montana to propose a golf course landscape design. City girl and Landscape Architect Sophie Smith is surveying the proposed site for a high-end-golf course which should have been easy. However, before she knows it, she gets swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy. But when she literally is suddenly and quite literally swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy on horseback – country life has suddenly become a lot more interesting. Who is this hot smokin’ wrangler? Little does she know that the hot cowboy is also tribal lawyer, Jake Lodge. When Jake swept Sophie off her feet and on top his horse it was like something out of the movies, but she won’t be distracted by some cowboy, no matter how sinful he looks in chaps. But Jake has more surprises up his sleeve, the moment she meets him as the Tribe’s Lawyer whose main goal is to oppose the build of a new golf course near their sacred land, the course she designed. When Sophie "runs into" Jake, a hot local "cowboy" on horseback, sparks fly.......until Sophie realizes Jake is also the local tribe's lawyer. The tribe will fight tooth and nail to stop the golf course as it's not good for the land and the lake it borders. The attraction between Jake and Sophia is mutual but being on opposite ends of the bargaining table is not conducive to a budding relationship. He immediately feels an attraction to this woman, who would much rather walk away from this dangerously, attractive man. Sophie is in town on business and doesn't have anytime to be distracted. Unfortunately she doesn't know what she is up against as Jack and his family see to it that she stay. Sparks fly and as with any alpha Jake can be very cleverly persuasive... Jake has a lot going for him. He is a respected attorney. He is a member of the Kooskia tribe. He has a strong extended family and lives in a close knit town. She’s supposed to convince the town folk and the local tribe council to embrace the development project. Everyone immediately accepts Sophie, even though they’re all against her business proposal.
”I told you I’d never lie to you.” His rumble against her flesh shot spasms deep within her. ”I meant it when I said I was keeping you,”
”I’m sorry I hurt your feelings.” “If you ever truly hurt me, I will destroy you.” “I think that’s fair, sweetheart.”
”You’re the golf course lady. You went on a date with Daddy.” “Ah, no, it, ah, wasn’t a date,” Sophie sputtered. Quinn coughed back a laugh…. ”Did you go on a picnic?” “Well, yes.” Sophie fought to keep from fidgeting under the scrutiny. ”Did you have a pretty view?” “ Definitely.” Where was the child going with this? ”And you ate lunch with some wine?” Sophie’s face heated. ”Well, yes.” “Sounds like a date to me.” Leila grinned in triumph. Quinn didn’t even try to mask his laugh this time.’
"I caught her. I get to keep her," her captor said, his eyes intent as he took another step toward her.
"I'd give anything to stay inside you forever-just you and me, feeling you come over and over again, Sunshine." He murmured against her skin.
If she stayed she'd give up control to the force of nature that was Jake Lodge. His sensual gaze promised dark pleasure, but at what cost?
“The land has been whispering since you arrived. You just need to listen.”
“All of me just likes all of you. A lot.”
Tall, broad, yet somehow graceful, he approached from his truck, a sexy predator in civilized clothing.
Jake's eyes darkened to coal as he ran his gaze over her from head to toe. He turned back to Gregton and slowly shook his head, his jaw tightening to iron. "No. You insult her, and we're stepping outside."
Jake has a lot going for him. He is a respected attorney. He is a member of the Kooskia tribe. He has a strong extended family and lives in a close knit town. He thought he had everything he wanted, until Sophie blew into town.
This is a distinct change for writing for this author who wrote the Dark Protector series. This is her first Contemporary Romance novel and it did not disappoint. I actually like this author better in this genre. The build up was delicious and the fireworks were well worth the wait. I really enjoyed this one and finished it in one day. It was a quick and yummy read.
I am giving this book 4 stars instead of five for a few reasons. One there were times that the beginning of the book dragged a bit. Not enough for me to loose interest, just a bit slow. Then the end felt like we skipped (some of) the good stuff. Still well worth the read!
