Rate this book

Insieme verranno a capo dell'omicidio!
Ho trovato i personaggi molto variegati e diversi l'uno dall'altro, ho davvero percepito l'aria tipica dei piccoli paesini.

One Liner: Comfort read for cozy mystery lovers.

Westleham Village, 1947: The Second World War is over, and people are getting back to their lives. All is not well, but life has to go on.

Martha Miller is a newcomer in the Westleham Village and has her share of troubles. Stan, her husband, left without a word, and there’s been no news of him for almost a year. Martha takes Ruby, her younger sister, as a lodger to earn her living.

It doesn’t help that Martha isn’t a favorite in the village. Rather it’s the opposite. When Alice, the chairperson of the Westleham Village Fair committee, falls dead after drinking Martha plum gin at the fair, she is immediately the prime suspect.

Martha has no choice but to clear her name. Luke Walker, the new and handsome vicar, extends his help and support.

As the duo tries to solve the mystery, the news of another death reaches them. After all, how can there be only one death?

Now up to Martha, Luke, and maybe even Inspector Ben to find the killer before it’s too late. With secrets and new crimes being revealed, can they catch the actual murderer?

My Observations:

• The book is just 210+ pages long and reads at a decent pace. It’s got the old-world charm of historical cozy mysteries with simple plots.
• There’s a list of characters and their roles at the beginning of the book. I love this. Makes it easier to keep track and refer.
• The dynamics between the characters change as the story progresses, and I’m intrigued to read further developments.
• The beginning is bumpy. It was around 15-20% that I settled into the narrative. Martha sounds older than her age, and I wondered if she was inspired by Miss Marple. It took me a while to guess she was in her early 30s.
• The side characters are quirky and even stereotypical at times, but I was expecting it.
• This time, I didn’t want to find who the killer was. I read it more as a way to relax rather than become an active investigator.
• The solving is uncomplicated, though there aren't too many clues. No twist or surprise, which is always a plus.
• The ending leaves things open and ready for book two. Needless to say, I am waiting for it. I also hope there will be more character development as the series progresses.
• I probably would’ve rated it 3 or 3.5 any other time, but this book came to me at the right time. Cozy mysteries are my comfort read, and this did the job. So 4 stars it is.

To sum up, Poison at the Village Show is a simple cozy mystery and an interesting start to a new series. This one has potential but go with low expectations.

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Interessanti i personaggi, variegati e ben descritti.
***
A good mystery to spend a few hours relaxing, nothing exceptional, but still smooth and unpredictable. The characters are interesting, varied and well described.

Westleham, 1947. Since her husband Stan never came home a year ago, Martha Miller has had to contend with a community that began treating her with coldness and suspicion. The war is over, and the entire town is preparing to organize the first fair in many years after facing numerous difficulties. For Martha, it could be her moment of redemption, but a mysterious murder will put her back at the center of a whirlwind of suspicion and gossip. However, this time, she is more determined than ever to prove her innocence by investigating with the help of the new vicar in town. It's a courageous search for the truth, amid the lives and secrets of the citizens of Wesleham, who aren't as immaculate as they'd like to believe.

The adjective that primarily defines Martha's character is loneliness, which has accompanied her since before her husband Stan's disappearance, for whom she realizes she never felt any affection, let alone love. With a desire for redemption, she embarks on a journey of personal growth, building confidence in herself and her abilities, finally breaking free from the bubble of isolation and loneliness.

"Poison at the Village Show" by Catherine Coles is a novel that wonderfully combines mystery and humor in a gripping story with a light but compelling pace, leaving you with a big question: What happened to Stan?? Because it's not the real mystery of the story :)

SYNOPSIS: "Westleham Village 1947.

It’s the Westleham village show and with the war finally over, everyone is looking forward to a pleasant day.

Martha hopes she can win her fellow villagers over with her delicious homemade plum gin. But as glasses of the tangy tipple are quaffed, disaster strikes! Chairwoman of the village show, Alice Warren, slumps to the ground - poisoned!

As fingers of suspicion again point Martha’s way, she’s determined to proveher innocence and find the real culprit. And she’s ably helped by the new vicar, Luke Walker.

I love cozy mysteries especially the Miss Marple types written by Agatha Christie, the queen of intriguing cozy mysteries. There is something about a small and closely knit village communities, where everyone knows what family secrets are harbored behind the closed doors that can lead to rivalries and sometimes, in extreme madness, even murders. Christie captured it brilliantly when she featured St. Mary Mead in few of Miss Marple books like Murder at the Vicarage and Body in the Library.

In Poison at the Village Show by Catherine Coles we have Westleham village and the story is set during 1947, a post WW2 world. Several women of the village have lost their husbands to the war and some are even jealous of other women whose husbands returned home safely. Martha Miller was one of the fortunate ones, but its been a year since her husband went missing, One fine day, Stan, Martha's husband, left home for work as usual but he never returned home in the evening. Now, Martha is struggling to pay the bills and grows her own vegetables in a small patch behind her house. She takes her sister, Ruby, as a boarder which helps her financially to a little extent. In the first village show after the war, when Alice Warren drops dead, just after drinking Martha's home made plum gin, all fingers point at Martha and she becomes a prime suspect.

Martha takes it upon herself and with some help from the new vicar, Luke, she starts investigating the murder in a hope it will absolve her in the eyes of the villagers. I loved reading this book and about the various characters of the quaint little village. Martha's character was lovable and her friendship with the vicar was adorable. The mystery was good too, but a few questions were left unanswered, but since this will be a series, there is hope that the cast of characters will continue in the next book. I'll be definitely looking out to read the next book in the Martha Miller series.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for the early Kindle copy of the book.

Absolutely delightful. Poison at the Village Show is the type of book you wish wouldn’t end.

Once I was done reading, I was tempted to turn right back to page one and start it again because I had such a fun time with this story.

I got so lost in it that I almost forgot that this was only book one and I now have to be patient and wait for more. I feel completely ready to binge the whole series.

Readers who love cozy mysteries, shows like Midsomer Murders or anything Agatha Christie are going to obsess over this book.

Coles wrote it so visually that it makes you wish it were a TV show.

Slightly spoiled by the main character going in the post office and asking for a 2nd class stamp. The implied period could be no later than the1960s and the 2nd class stamp was not introduced until 1993.(see page 161)

The first in a historical cosy mystery series set not long after WW2, this is a pleasant read that has a genuinely British feel. It plays out very much like a small town cosy mystery, where gossip spreads in an instant and neighbours know the contents of your cupboards. It's filled with the type of characters I would expect, but it didn't feel stale. I had a lot of fun with this read, and part of that is down to the voice of the protagonist, Martha Miller. She's married (although her husband vanished a year ago without a trace) and relies on a younger sister boarding in her home to make ends meet. But she goes through life with a quiet dignity, despite the many accusations and glares cast her way by other in the small village. But, there's growth for Martha in this book, and I liked how she started to push back a little, which in turn opened up changes for character relationships, in turn adding more fun to this book.

Still, there is a mystery to solve. Well, two mysteries. One being garden vandalism and the other apparent poisoning. Martha finds herself in the middle of both investigations, and with the help of the new vicar, Luke, she sets out to solve the crimes. I have a feeling there's sure to be romance between Martha and Luke at some stage. That's one of the open ended questions at the end of this book. The other big one being where is Martha's husband? There's a small lead in this book, but I have a suspicion he may turn up soon, which is sure to thrown a spanner into the works.

Full of charm and good humour, this is just a pleasant read and quick read. The mystery is not going to blow your socks off, and the conclusion felt a bit odd, but it's the characters and setting that hooked me into this story. I love small town or village mysteries, and there's something about gentle charm in stories that has always appealed to me. Whether it's a book, a movie, or whatever it is, that has always been something I've enjoyed.

I've not read Catherine Coles before, and I've learnt she has another series, so I will be checking that out in the future.

This was such a fun easy read with great characters! The main character did remind me of myself quite a bit which I’m not sure if that’s a good thing but she was super quirky! I loved the feel of a community in a small village after the war had ended, even though not everyone was that friendly!

Set just after the end of WWII, Poison at the Village Show introduces us to Martha Miller, the main protagonist. She is a relative newcomer to Westleham Village. Left on her own after her husband Stan disappeared a year ago, she is still the subject of village gossip, several claiming Martha is in some way to blame. There’s even a rumour Stan is buried under the potato patch. Her sister Ruby lives with her to help make ends meet since she can’t access her husband’s account.

Martha and Ruby, although siblings, are totally different people. Ruby, pretty, outgoing and confident, while Martha is much more reserved due to her upbringing and loveless marriage. Despite wishing for more contact with people she is lacking in social skills. Her constant companion is her dog.

The day of the village show didn’t exactly go as planned. Martha had donated several bottles of her home made plum gin to the committee and as the chairwoman made the toast and took a sip she promptly fell down…and died. Panic ensued and once again the villagers’ fingers pointed at Martha. Thank goodness Luke is on her side and between them they decide to make some discreet enquiries. Martha has had enough of being the scapegoat and is determined to clear her name.

Poison at the Village Show is the first in what promises to be an enjoyable cosy mystery series. The main characters are likeable — it’s good to see Martha come out of her shell as the story progresses, and witness the closeness growing between the sisters. The setting and era are depicted extremely well with Catherine Coles’ descriptions and details of post war living in a small village.

I read other cosy mysteries by Catherine Coles and liked them. This is the start of a new historical cosy series and there’s plenty of potential.
I’m sure it will become a favourite as I enjoyed this story and liked Martha and Luke.
Martha is an interesting character and I liked how the author developed her character and her backstory. She’s considered a sort of black widow/scarlet woman by the village busybodies and that was a very interesting aspect of the story as it reflects an aspect of the historical mindset
The plot is easy to follow and I thoroughly enjoyed and liked how Martha and Luke interacted.
It’s a solid mystery and it kept me guessing.
The end leaves some loose ends (not on the mystery side) and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Recommended.

Cozy Mystery
As far as cozy mysteries go, this one felt a bit fluffier than most. What with the tragedy of the main character's singleness and the well-timed arrival of a particularly attractive individual. The mystery was one of poison and mostly revolved around the interview of characters I felt belonged in an episode of "Midsomer Murders." (I love that show, and I thought this may be a good episode on it.) As far as being really impactful, the book itself was quite forgettable on the whole. But it was fun while it lasted, and anyway, isn't that the point of cozy mysteries in the first place?

3/5
Not as poignant as other cozies I've read, but light-hearted and non-threatening.

Poison at the Village Show by Catherine Coles takes us back to July of 1947 in Westleham, Berkshire where Martha Miller resides. Her husband disappeared a year ago and Martha is still subjected to gossip. Some people believe he is fertilizing her potatoes. Martha’s sister, Ruby moved in to help her with the bills. Alice Warren is the chairwoman of the Westleham Village Committee with Martha as the deputy chairwoman. It is the first village show since the end of the war and everyone (well, most everyone) is looking forward to it. Martha has provided the plum wine for the event. Alice proposes a toast and, after drinking the plum wine, she collapses and dies in Martha’s arms. Martha is the prime suspect since she made the wine. Martha is determined to prove her innocence and gets assistance from the handsome new vicar, Luke Walker. Can Martha and Luke uncover who killed Alice? Will the killer strike again? Poison at the Village Show by Catherine Coles is a swell new British cozy mystery. I appreciated that we are provided a list of characters at the beginning of the book along with their roles. I found it to be very helpful. I like the author’s engaging writing style. I found myself drawn into the story. The pacing varied in the story. It is a little slower in the beginning as we meet the characters and visit the village. The pacing increases as Martha with assistance from Vicar Luke Walker investigates the crime. There are some quirky secondary characters that are cliched (they go with the small village where gossip is a sport). I like Ruby, Martha’s sister who is more outgoing than Martha. I also liked Detective Inspector Ben Robertson who seems smitten with Ruby. The mystery is straightforward. I enjoyed following Martha and Luke as they questioned people in the village. The clues are few, but there are enough to solve the crime. I kept hoping there would be a twist that would surprise me. There are two secondary mysteries in the story. One involves the destruction of the village vegetable gardens. People are subtlety accusing Martha of doing the deed so she can win the awards at the village fete. The other mystery is regarding Martha’s missing husband. He went off to work one day to never return. There is speculation in the village that Martha killed him and buried him under her potato patch. People are jealous because Martha has a flourishing vegetable garden in her backyard. There is some repetition in the story especially regarding Martha’s missing husband and the handsome new vicar. Martha and Luke got along from the beginning. I believe they could be good friends if there was not the spark of attraction. They must be careful how much time they spend in each other’s company because of the local gossips. Poison at the Village Show is a cute cozy mystery that I enjoyed reading. It is lighthearted and fun to read. Poison at the Village Show is a spiffing tale with a deceased chairwoman, a vegetable vandal, a dashing detective, a sorrowful spouse, rampant rumors, a charming clergyman, and a partner who has taken a powder.

Poison at the Village Show is just the sort of delightful, gentle cozy mystery set in a sleepy English village that you want to read during a lazy afternoon.

The inhabitants of Westleham village are too inquisitive for their own good. The British stiff upper lip rarely quivers. The village show is the highlight of the year. And a hot cup of sweet tea is the answer to all problems. A handsome, young, and single vicar arrives at the village, making many hearts flutter. When a murder is dropped into the mix, the sleepy village is shaken up and the gossiping ladies go on overdrive.

Told from the point of view of Martha Miller, a 33-year-old woman whose husband has been missing for a year, we see how the events help bring a change in her. From a mousy, quiet woman she develops some courage to stand up for herself. She develops a fuller relationship with her younger sister, Ruby, who lives with her and helps her pay her bills.

Along with the vicar, Martha sets out to solve the murder that has made her quiet village front-page news. After many rounds of tea drinking, exchanges of gossip, and a few hair-raising incidents, she arrives at the answer. I loved the subtle wit and humour that runs throughout the story. I loved the little confusion that the author threw in at the end. I suspect she will follow up on it in the next book.

An exciting cozy murder mystery for people who want the thrill without the blood and gore!
