Robin Hood has always been one of my favourite legends and as soon as this Twisted Tale was announced, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and read it. I’m glad to say that the story lived up to my expectations.

It was really refreshing to see Marian (who is usually depicted as the love interest) become more than just a passive bystander within the events of the film. Instead of Robin being the one who stole from the rich, Marian did it all in secret while being a noblewoman. The story was very interesting and offered a great spin on a famous legend. There was plenty of action and a little bit of intrigue thrown in there too, which made for a great story.

On the whole, Princess of Thieves was a brilliant book and it’s definitely become one of my favourite novels in the Twisted Tales series. If you’re a fan of Robin Hood, I’d recommend that you give this a read.

First of all, I love Robin Hood. I love the story, the characters, and the Disney film.

I loved all of the tweaks and changes they made to that original mythos for this book. I liked the repeated moments, but reversed, and how some areas got a bit more depth. Maid Marian was the hero, but they didn't bring anyone down to raise her up.

One of my favourite twisted tales.

* All the books in this series are standalone's and can be read separately.

With Robin at war with king Richard, Maid Marian has been out of the country for three years, being completely absorbed in her education to become a full-on member of the King's council. But when she returns after three years, she finds England in complete disarray and poverty, with king Richard seemingly dead and his idiotic brother John on the throne with a very suspicious advisor whispering in his ear. Marian decides she will do something to help the inhabitants of Nottingham and with her trusty friend Lady Kluck they set out to feed the population and investigate the death of the king.

Pro's:
+ This story really was the Disney story about Robin Hood, but making maid Marian the hero of this story and in this way, the story made even more sense to me than the movie. Loads of scenes from the movie made their way into this book and that was fun.
+ Mari Mancusi is really good in giving these stories more background than the actual Disney movies and I think she added so much more depth to the actual story. Even with a book being a better medium for telling a story, she manages to grab this chance with both hands.

Con's:
- I was a little bit sad this story was not longer than the actual story, I would have loved an epilogue with an update after a few years, not just from Marian, but also about the villagers of Nottingham. They have been through so much and I wished we could have seen them thrive.

This was a fantastic read, quite easy and light, but with enough action to keep you flying through the pages. This book is definitely a twisted tale, but at the same time adds so much detail and depth to the actual Disney movie. I wish we got a bit more of this story after the ending, but I guess that would have only been wishful thinking. I definitely recommend this entry in the series, this was such a fun read.

Although there are twisted tales that are more complicated and original, I did enjoy reading this one. At its core it's still the story we all know. Marian is just more of a hero and Robin is more careful, afraid to ruin the lives of those he cares about. I also quite liked the role of Mr. Hiss in this book and therefore the role of Prince John. John almost becomes somehow endearing and someone to pity. I also quite enjoyed the chapters from the point of view of the little ones! I was glad that it was added!

Decent retelling!

First of all, I think the characters were really expanded in this book. I was happy with the stronger characters, and they really made the story, especially Marian. I wouldn’t say she had much of a personality in the movie, but she’s the main character in this, and because of the effort put into her character, it was the biggest improvement.

This story started out really slow. I didn’t really care about the plot for the first 10% of it, even though I didn’t really like the characters. The more I read, the better it got. I was a little disappointed that there still wasn’t a lot of romantic development within the plot. Marian and Robin still just kind of get together with only a few good scenes together. I did really like the twist. It was pretty thought out, but the scene where they were helping king Richard to escape was a little disappointing. I think it was the best way to resolve the main conflict, but, after a whole book about this, I would have preferred a longer final solution with a little more tension.

Overall, this was a decent read, but nothing I’d want to reread or feel the need to recommend

I am obsessed with these Disney twisted tales! They are always fun, vibrant, and enjoyable!!

Princess of Thieves is a twist on the classic Disney movie Robin Hood, remember the cute one where Robin Hood and Maid Marian are foxes? Now imagine that Marian is the rebel, wielding the bow, fighting for the people of Nottingham! After returning to England, Marian finds Nottingham in a state of despair, Robin has been banished, Kind Richard is dead, and the people of Nottingham are being crushed by taxes. Marian and her loyal lady at her side, Lady Kluck, decide to act themselves, deciding not to wait on a dancing prince to save them, they become outlaws to steal from the rich and give to the poor and those in need.
You can’t help by love Mari Mancusi’s take on Marian, she is brave, smart, caring, and quick witted. The banter between Marian and Lady Kluck as they fight for justice, provides the reader with plenty of action and a few chuckles here and there. And don’t worry Robin Hood is still around and you’ll still love their dynamic through Marian’s POV. Nothing better than a female outlaw!!!

I'd rate this book 3 stars.
The chapters were very short, which I didn't mind, it just stuck out to me.
I really loved chapters 35 and 38. We were given so much information, and I was surprised by every other sentence.
I did not expect Richard to be alive. I was SHOCKED when it happened.
I LOVED that Marian was doing good and giving to the people in such a rough time. I think we should be doing this more often in real life. I wish we saw more of her stealing and giving back. I also loved when Robin started helping the people as well.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED when Robin would say, "My Marian" It's so sweet and shows how he still loves her even after they spent 3 years apart.

It was too close to the original story, just with Maid Marian being the one to steal for the poor. Doesn't live up to the reputation of the other Twisted Tales.

Cute retelling!
Cover is a bit misleading, because it insinuates Robin is not, in fact, an outlaw while Maid Marian was. But he's still an outlaw, he just wasn't responsible for the schemes against Prince John and helping the poor, as that was Maid Marian's doing.
Robin was too scared to put his men in jeopardy, so Maid Marian takes matters into her own hands, inspiring Robin to finally act as well!
Love that Klucky was such a support to Marian too. They both had such good friends and support, especially after helping the towns people so much. I also love the side twist about King Richard and Sir Hiss.
This version makes Sir Hiss much more conniving and cruel than the movie did 🙊
Was overall a fun read though! Wish they sold this in the US, alas, I had to procure my copy from a foreign seller but it was worth it 😁

Let me just start with this: Princess of Thieves by Mari Mancusi is everything I didn’t know I needed in a YA fantasy adventure. It’s fierce, fun, and packed with heart—an irresistible blend of action, romance, and pure magic. This is the kind of book that makes you laugh, cry, and cheer, sometimes all at once, and I was completely enchanted from the very first page.

The story centers on Rowenna, a whip-smart, strong-willed heroine who happens to be the daughter of none other than Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Talk about a legacy to live up to! But Rowenna is more than just her lineage—she’s a force of nature. Torn between her father’s legendary ideals and her own desire to carve out her own path, Rowenna is a beautifully complex character who feels both larger-than-life and deeply relatable.

When her father is captured by the evil King John, Rowenna is thrust into a high-stakes mission to rescue him. What follows is an epic journey through Sherwood Forest and beyond, filled with daring heists, clever schemes, and more than a few nail-biting confrontations. Mancusi does a phenomenal job of blending classic Robin Hood lore with fresh, inventive twists, giving the story a timeless yet modern feel.

The supporting cast is just as delightful. From the roguishly charming outlaw who might just steal Rowenna’s heart to the loyal band of misfits who have her back every step of the way, every character is vividly drawn and utterly lovable. The banter between them is sharp and witty, adding just the right amount of humor to balance the tension.

But what really got me was the emotional depth. This isn’t just a tale of swashbuckling adventure—it’s a story about family, identity, and finding the courage to stand up for what you believe in. Rowenna’s journey isn’t just about saving her father; it’s about discovering who she is and what she’s capable of. Her struggles, triumphs, and vulnerabilities all feel so real, and I couldn’t help but root for her with all my heart.

Mari Mancusi’s writing is simply magic. Her prose is crisp and engaging, her pacing is flawless, and her world-building is rich and immersive. Sherwood Forest comes alive in all its danger and beauty, and the stakes feel as real as the ground beneath your feet. Mancusi has this incredible ability to pull you into the story and make you feel like you’re right there beside Rowenna, facing down danger and defying the odds.

And let’s not forget the romance! It’s sweet, swoony, and perfectly paced, adding an extra layer of stakes without overshadowing the main plot. The chemistry between Rowenna and her love interest crackles off the page, and their relationship is as heartfelt as it is exciting.

Why should you read Princess of Thieves? Because it’s a joyride of a book that will leave you breathless, inspired, and hungry for more. It’s a love letter to the Robin Hood legend, a celebration of female empowerment, and a rollicking adventure that’s impossible to put down. Mari Mancusi has crafted something truly special here—a story that’s as fun as it is meaningful, as thrilling as it is touching.

Whether you’re a die-hard Robin Hood fan or just love a good adventure, this book is an absolute must-read. Rowenna is the heroine we all need, and Princess of Thieves is the kind of story that will stay with you long after the final page. Bravo, Mari Mancusi—you’ve stolen my heart with this one! 🌟

A Delightfully Fresh Take on a Classic Tale! I love my Disney, but these twisted tales are just…..WOW!

What if Maid Marian was the one donning the hood, wielding the bow, and rallying the people of Nottingham? In Disney Robin Hood: Princess of Thieves, Mari Mancusi flips the classic legend on its head, giving Maid Marian the spotlight she deserves, and trust me, she totally steals the show!

Returning to England after a long trip, Marian finds a world turned upside down. Robin has been banished, her uncle King Richard is dead, and Nottingham is being crushed under the weight of unjust taxes. But instead of waiting for a dashing outlaw to save the day, Marian, along with her fiercely loyal lady’s maid, Lady Kluck, decides to take action herself.
With her bow in hand and courage in her heart, Marian becomes the outlaw the village needs, uncovering secrets and righting wrongs with a sense of purpose and more than a little flair.

What’s brilliant about Princess of Thieves is how it reimagines Marian as a heroine in her own right. She’s brave, smart, and not afraid to get her paws (yes, this is still the adorable animal version of Robin Hood) dirty to help her people. The partnership between Marian and Lady Kluck is fantastic, they make an unstoppable duo, full of wit and charm. Lady Kluck’s no-nonsense attitude and Marian’s resolve to fight for justice give the story heart, humour, and plenty of action.

Of course, the Merry Men do make an appearance, and seeing Robin through Marian’s eyes gives their dynamic a refreshing twist. He may be the original outlaw, but it’s Marian who’s taking the lead this time, and it’s a joy to see her step into the role of hero. Their interactions have that playful, flirtatious energy, but the story wisely keeps the focus on Marian’s growth and mission.

The plot is a fast-paced mix of daring heists, mystery-solving, and heartwarming moments as Marian uncovers the truth behind her uncle’s death. The world of Disney’s Robin Hood is lovingly reimagined, with all the charm and whimsy of the classic animated film, but with a modern twist that makes Marian’s journey feel fresh and exciting.

This story is a fun, empowering adventure that breathes new life into a beloved legend. If you’ve ever wanted to see Maid Marian step out from behind Robin’s shadow and take control of her own destiny, this book will not disappoint. With its lovable characters, thrilling plot, and just the right amount of romance and humour, it’s the perfect read for Disney fans and adventure seekers alike.

Maid Marian has officially become Nottingham’s fiercest outlaw and I am here for it!

If you think you know the story of Robin Hood and his merry men, think again. This twisted tale turns everything you think you know on its head! It is a brilliantly retold tale of murder, greed, outlaws, danger and love.

The war is over, and Maid Marion returns to her uncle, King Richard’s homeland. When she arrives, she discovers that the king has tragically died and his younger brother, Prince John, has taken over the reign of the country. His tactics are as questionable as Sir Hiss, the slippery snake that seems to have an unknown power over the prince.

Mancusi sets up the strength of character of Maid Marion early in the story, who makes no secret that she is willing to get her fox fur dirty if it means making a stand against the wrath and power of Prince John. Mancusi uses well known elements of the story of Robin Hood to re-write this twisted tale to put Maid Marion front and centre of the action. She even includes the trusty lady maid, Lady Kluck. One fiercely protective chook!
Unwittingly, Maid Marion begins helping those whose living conditions have been impacted by high taxes and outlawed family members. She begins stealing riches to share with the poor. Unfortunately for her, Robin Hood, her childhood friend and long-time crush who is already outlawed by Prince John, gets the credit for Maid Marion’s exploits.

This is a cleverly written story, and the action is this novel is continuous. There are twists and turns aplenty to keep the reader entertained. Even though Maid Marion must keep her wits, this is an entertaining story of girl power that reminds every reader that we are responsible for our destiny, and we all have the power to make a change, even in the fairytale world of Nottingham.

Whether you know the story of Robin Hood or not, this story stands up on its own merit and the outlaw, Maid Marion, will be the new princess everyone wants to be. Princess of Thieves is suitable for a 10+ readership.

This is really a 4.5 rounded up. I REALLY wanted to give it a 5, but the writing and some of the characters brought it down slightly.

I LOVED this book!!! Robin Hood is one of my favorite old Disney movies, and I'm so glad it finally got a novel of its own. I had mixed expectations because I was disappointed by the short story version from the anthology, but this did NOT disappoint!!! The romance between Robin and Maid Marian gave me heart eyes every time it was mentioned, and the plot (although simple) was really well done! The writing read younger at points, which threw me off, but it wasn't always noticeable and didn't take that much away from the experience. Most of the characters were the same as the movie, which I appreciated.

Although, here's where we get into why this book is not a true 5. The characters of Prince John and Sir Hiss seemed off. In the movie, Prince John seems to be in charge, bashing on Sir Hiss and treating him like nothing. Hiss is submissive up front but mutters about the injustice to himself, although he never does anything (except once) to change this chain of command.

In this book, Sir Hiss is the one in charge, following Prince John everywhere and hypnotizing him to do what the snake wants, without the prince knowing it. John is characterized more like a big baby who doesn't know how to rule. The movie shows John being a baby sometimes, but he acts more malicious and smart than anything else. Likewise, there is one time in the movie that Sir Hiss uses hypnosis, but Prince John cuts him off with "None of that!" showing that he knows what Hiss is doing. It's just a small change from movie to book, but every time it was mentioned, it rubbed me the wrong way.

Overall, I loved this Twisted Tale!! I think it did the movie justice (thanks Mari for putting in some movie lines, I heard them all in my head as I read them) and I'm so glad I got my hands on it!!! So excited for more to come out! :)

I always loved Robin Hood and Maid Marian, so I was excited for this one 🥹.
Instead of Robin Hood bringing the riches to the poor, it's Maid Marian.

The war is finally over, and Marian returns home to Nottingham after three years away. However, upon her return, nothing is the same. Her beloved Uncle Richard, the King is dead, her best friend Robin is an outlaw, and the town she knew and loved is in disarray, with shops boarded up and starving children playing on the streets.
Marian doesn't know who she can trust as she learns that selfish Prince John has taken the throne and has been hypnotised by his advisor, Sir Hiss, to take more for himself and leave even less for the already poor.
Marian knows she needs to do something to help the townsfolk, and first on her list is to find Robin, what she didn't expect was for him to want to stay hidden where he and his merry men are safer.

So with the help of Lady Kluck, her old Nanny, she finds it's up to them to steal from the kingdom and give to the poor, right underneath the Prince's nose, of course this is helped by the townsfolk believing it's Robin putting him in the limelight instead of her.
As secrets are unravelled and explored, nothing is as it seems, and Marian is keen to get a plan in action to get everything back in order as it should be.

Maid Marian returns from abroad to hopefully join her uncle King Richard's castle, only to find him dead and his brother Prince John (with his new sidekick Sir Hiss) in charge. Marian is shocked to discover that Prince John has taxed the kingdom so highly that poverty is rampant and many of the villagers are now living as wanted people, including Robin Hood. Marian (with the help of Lady Kluck) decides to take things into her own hands and help provide for the villagers. The story surrounding King Richard's death is suspicious and Marian is determined to figure out what led to his death. Will Robin and his Merry Men be able to help Marian? Will Marian and Kluck be able to help the villagers or will they be caught by the sneaky Sir Hiss and lazy Prince John? This is a great Robin Hood retelling that those who love adventure stories will love.

This is honestly one of my favorite Twisted Tales books and I can't believe it's not for sale in the US!

I like Robin Hood but it's not a book or a movie I would often rewatch or reread- so this book takes that story and runs with it - except Maid Marian is Robin in this book - she steals from the rich and gives to the poor whilst Robin is mostly passive and not really involved until the end of the book - and I really did enjoy this idea-because normally in every depiction Marian is the love interest and that's that - she is pretty, she is young, she is in love with Robin and she waits for him - she either marries him either dies at the end of the book - but she isn't really involved in the story past being a pretty young love interest - but this book empowers her and makes her a main character who is smart and good looking and love interest- and this book managed to make me laugh and even somewhat love Prince John - so it's a great little hidden gem if you can get your hands on this one since it's harded to find than the rest of the Twisted tales.

Robin Hood is one of my favourite legends of all time and I absolutely love the classic Disney movie. It was a favourite of mine growing up and I am so glad to say that Princess of Thieves by Mari Mancusi (A Disney Twisted Tale) did not disappoint! It is an extremely fun ride! I loved it!

It has all of the fun of the classic Disney animated movie Robin Hood. The author captured the feel and excitement of the original movie perfectly, while giving the story a clever twist. What if Maid Marian were the real outlaw?

All our favourite characters are back, including Robin (he is in it too!), and I enjoyed reading about all of them but Maid Marian was my favourite.

I recommend this to fans of the Twisted Tales series and anyone who loves Robin Hood.

I’ll be honest, this was a 3-star for a very long time, but the final 50 pages pushed it up to a low 4.

There’s very little plot and the characters don’t feel all that similar to the movie (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since as they were mostly played by American actors anyways!), but I still had fun reading this subtle twist on the story. I just wish we got more in-depth with John, Robin and even Kluck’s stories. It all felt quite glossed-over, especially in a book as long as this one was in comparison to others!

I still really, really love this series of books. I don’t know what is coming up next, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go. (I just won’t be reading the Brave one, as that movie doesn’t appeal to me at all and it was my least favourite short story in the anthology!)

Now, what to read next…?

Overall this book is a wonderful story, but I can't help but feel like it is published fanfic. The plot was great and well thought out and every time I read a reference to the OG film I felt a little satisfaction.

Maid Marian was actually a really fleshed pit character. The fact that she (in this version at least) did all these selfless deeds and allowed Robin (unknowingly in his defense) to take all the credit and allow us as readers to see that she truly cares about what she's doing. She's doing it for the people not the glory.

Another thing I liked about this was how they didn't weaken Robin or make him less courageous. I mean at the start of the book he kind of is, but he has growth and matures into a hero. Nevertheless his love for Marian and the acts he does for her are just as romantic as the OG.

What would happen if Maid Marian returned from overseas to find Robin banished, her Uncle, King Richard killed returning from battle and Prince John on the throne and the animals of Nottingham starving and miserable?!
Told mainly from Marian’s perspective, this twist on one of my favourite ever Disney movies is fun, exciting and heartwarming. I haven’t enjoyed some of the Twisted Tales that were told from someone other than the main protagonist but I really loved this one. You do get a chapter here and there told from others’ perspectives (Prince John, Robin, even Skippy!) But mostly it was Marian and I loved hearing her journey and getting to know her character more. The difference in dynamic between Prince John and Sir Hiss was also quite interesting!! 5⭐️

Aww this was so fun and so cute! I’m a big big fan of Disney’s Robin Hood and I loved this alternative story. I loved how the charm from the original was always there including some of the memorable lines but I likewise loved the slight changes that added even more depth and lore to characters I already loved. Lady Kluck comes to mind first, how she was such a good fighter in the movie and her scene with the guards always made me laugh so I loved that her skills were explained in depth! Marian and Robin of course are amazing as well, and while I was initially confused as to why Robin was hesitant to join the cause, the reason described later made perfect sense and allowed Marian to shine. Definitely one of my favorites in the series!

It has been years since I watched Disney’s Robin Hood, but I loved this retelling. Maid Marian is the main character, and she is so much more than Robin’s romantic interest. Returning to England she finds the King, her uncle, has died in an on road attack as he (and Robin) were making their way home from war. Now, the greedy Prince John rules and taxes the country to starvation. Marian can’t accept this and with her former nursemaid, Lady Kluck, schemes to help the poor by robbing from the rich.

Another great addition to the Twisted Tales. I’m going to look for other Mari Mancusi offerings and recommend this book and also Sally’s Lament!

I will admit, prior to reading this I was only somewhat familiar with the story of Disney’s Robin Hood as I hadn’t seen the movie yet! Now, after reading this awesome book, I feel I definitely have to. Marian was a fantastic character and her assuming the role of Robin Hood in this twisted tale version was very natural and also really fun! I loved her lady’s maid, Kluck, and their scheming as they worked together to redistribute the wealth from the king. This was a really fun read and I loved the author’s writing style. I can’t wait to read more twisted tales, especially by this author!

A retelling of the Disney film of Robin Hood (I.e Marian and Robin are foxes, Price John is a Lion etc)
I enjoyed this though comparing it to other Disney retellings (As Old as Time - Beauty and the Beast) I didn't find the story to be twisted and changed enough for a retelling. I wanted to be surprised a bit more and not expect what was next in the story but unfortunately everything was very predictable.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

another awesome twisted tale. i was a little weirded out by the characters all being animals even though i know that was what they were in the movie but i still really liked it. the twist in the tale was really great i love female empowerment. i also love the lady kluck storyline. my one thing though is to be honest i was kind of seeing robin and little john as a couple more than him and marian. still a 5/5 star read though and something i would definitely read again

Absolutely fantastic, the best twisted Disney book by far!! Robin Hood is my favorite story and the Disney film is my favorite adaptation of it, so when I came across this book I had to read it. I could picture each character, hear their voices, just perfect. I loved how they twisted it to come from Marian's hero angle and how she saves Nottingham, Lady Kluck being a trained Knight for King Richard etc. I loved EVERYTHING about this book and even cried a few happy tears when I finished it.

I have always loved the disney adaption of Robin Hood since I was young especially with them all being animals so once I heard about this Twisted Tale I knew I had to read it!

I think the quotation is a bit misleading as Marian isn't really an outlaw she's still a noblewoman but also secretly helping the animals by giving them gold & food.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this & will do again that's for sure!
