What if the Grim Reaper wasn’t just a specter but a seeker? A seeker of connection, humor, and even… love? Rick Black—a name as ordinary as the man behind it is extraordinary. For centuries, he has roamed the earth, guiding souls to their final rest. But eternity isn’t all scythes and sunsets. Even Death gets lonely. Enter the unlikeliest of a modern dating reality show where “connections transcend the physical.” For Rick, it’s a chance to blend in, to feel human, and perhaps, to find the one who can see beyond his skeletal grin.
But in this vibrant masquerade of mortal emotions, Rick discovers humanity at its most raw and chaotic. There’s Harley Kayos, a whirlwind of mischief and mayhem who challenges his stoic demeanor. Selena Nightshade, a collector of secrets whose enigmatic presence draws him into her web. And then, of course, there’s the other contestants—dreamers, rock stars, and egos too large for even Death to contain.
As sparks fly and the games grow ever more unpredictable, Rick must navigate his own duality. Can a being who has always been the end find a beginning? Or will this experiment in connection reveal the true weight of immortality?
“The balance must be maintained. Choices have repercussions.” ~Azreal
Victor Peter steps away from the dark, twisted, intense style of our beloved Jake series and takes a walk into new territory with Soul Connection - and he freaking nails it! I am a die-hard fan of Jake and his minions, so knowing what they hold in their pockets, I wasn't sure what to expect. But what I found was an unexpected, clever blend of dark fantasy themed piece of work with psychological aspects, dry wit and emotional depth.
Soul Connection has proved, not that die-hard fans doubted, that Peter is a versatile and multi-faceted author. He masterfully writes with skill and precision, along with being able to bring levity and humor to his dark and twisted world.
At the heart of this story is Rick Black (MMC), better known as the Grim Reaper. Usually busy ferrying souls into the afterlife, Rick’s latest mission comes with a twist - he’s invited to join Soul Connection, a not-so-average dating show where “connections transcend the physical.” Confused but intrigued, Rick accepts the challenge, stepping out of his comfort zone and into a spotlight he never asked for.
Rick’s skepticism quickly turns into bemused tolerance as he navigates the game-like setting of the show, brushing shoulders with other eccentric suitors. He’s got his dating persona down, playing the part but feeling nothing - until he hears her. Morticia. One voice. One spark. And suddenly, the Grim Reaper feels something he's not sure he was ever meant to feel: desire, curiosity… maybe even more.
Torn between his eternal duty and something beautifully human, Rick must decide what truly matters. Can Death himself fall in love, or is he destined to walk alone?
Soul Connection isn’t just a departure for Peter - it’s a revelation. With sharp humor, immersive detail, and brilliant pacing, Peter proves he’s not just a master of the dark and twisted, but of contrast and heart as well. I found myself laughing out loud, unexpectedly moved, and completely immersed. The world-building was so vivid I could practically hear the mic checks and the shuffling of feet on set.
If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, dark humor, or simply want something refreshingly different, Soul Connection is a must-read (or must-listen - I highly recommend the audiobook). Victor Peter has once again proven he can do it all - and do it flawlessly.
Soul Connection by Victor Peter 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is a super entertaining and a dark-humor thriller story! This story dives into the need for love, the notion of death with a nice dose of subtle & dark humor! I felt like I was reading a strange and more intense version of the show “Love is Blind.” Everyone deserves a soulmate! Rick has been roaming the earth for a very long time and is lonely. He decides to join a dating show where you learn about other people and try to make a connection without seeing them ahead of time. This is perfect for Rick, who isn’t exactly a conventional person.
This is another fabulous book from Victor Peter. His writing style is unique and easy to follow. This book really dives into human life, deep feelings and daily situations that people go through.
Thank you to Victor Peter for an arc of this really awesome book! It’s one that will stick with me! *It’s out now, so get your copy!!*
Soul connection is a satirical novel about the grim reaper and his attempt to find love. He decides the best way to do this is to go on a reality show. The characters in this book are funny and weird and mimic what you might actually see on a reality show.
This is a much lighter read than Victor's other books, but in true Victor fashion he has to put a twist out there and leave you asking questions and wanting more at the end.
Soul Connection by Victor Peter is a fabulous satirical read that I absolutely loved. It's a lighter read than what we're used to reading from Victor Peter, and he definitely did not disappoint! I would highly recommend adding to your TBR at your earliest convenience.

The dark humor and keen observations make this more than just a thriller—it’s a commentary on the absurdities of life, delivered with a razor-sharp edge. Definitely a fun, thought-provoking read for those who enjoy a little darkness with their humor.
Thank you to Victor Peter for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

If you like dark humor, this book is for you... If dark humor is not your thing, then don't pick up this book! I really enjoyed this book it was nice to laugh.. and it was also cute. I definitely recommend giving this a read.
I thought it was cute that the Grim Reaper was looking for love and decided to try his luck on the dating show.. who doesn't want to find that special someone, and like they say, there is someone out there for everyone. The game show peace reminded me of the ones you might see on tv. The characters are also a little strange or interesting, but on any reality TV show, there are a few that make you question humanity sometimes. Although everyone is strange, so maybe they weren’t really strange? Depending on what you might think is interesting anyway.. Honestly, it didn't surprise me that the Grim Reaper was lonely.. I would be to with a job like that. And with a job like the Grim Reaper, you're gonna have dark humor is a coping mechanism. You have to find the joy in life even if it's dark. Hummor can cure sadness... maybe not yourself but at least others.... I know I needed a laugh.
This was easy to read.. There were some real-life struggles that also made it relatable.
Soul Connection by Victor Peter Release date: February 16, 2025
Soul Connection is an absolute riot of a novel that turns the afterlife on its head. Imagine Death joining a dating reality show—sounds absurd, right? Yet, Peter transforms this wild premise into a surprisingly profound exploration of connection, humanity, and love.
Rick Black, our protagonist, is no ordinary Grim Reaper. He's a centuries-old soul seeking something more than just guiding spirits—he wants genuine human connection. Signing up for a reality dating show, Rick brings a deliciously dark humor to the search for love. The novel brilliantly balances laugh-out-loud moments with deep philosophical musings.
Characters like the brash Harley Kayos and enigmatic Selena Nightshade inject vibrant energy into Rick's immortal journey. While the pacing occasionally stumbles, the narrative's originality more than makes up for it. Peter's genius lies in humanizing Death itself. Rick's vulnerability and witty observations about human nature create a surprisingly relatable character. This isn't just a comedy—it's a poignant reflection on existence, connection, and the beauty of fleeting moments.
Victor Peter’s Soul Connections: Love is Eternal. So is Death. masterfully delves into the raw and often uncomfortable intersection of love and mortality. This is far more than a romance; it’s a fearless examination of existence, connection, and the inevitable questions we all face about purpose and impermanence.
What sets this story apart is its refusal to offer tidy resolutions. It leans into the chaos of human emotions and relationships, embracing the imperfections that make them real. There’s an honesty to its portrayal of love and loss that feels rare and unvarnished. The narrative doesn’t flinch—it confronts the messiness of life head-on, asking readers to sit with the discomfort and reflect on their own truths.
Unsettling at times but deeply compelling, Soul Connections is the kind of book that challenges your perspective and leaves an impression—not because it’s trying to be profound, but because it’s unapologetically genuine. It’s a story for those who don’t mind grappling with the raw, unfiltered realities of life and love.
Soul Connection is a satire, dark, macabre story about the Grim Reaper looking for love. He checks out a few dating sites and can't seem to find someone he connects with until he gets an off for a dating show called Soul Connection. He makes a connection with a woman named Morticia, who shares a lot of common interests with him and likes his dark humor, except Rick (the grim reaper) can't find a way to tell her what he really does. Victor Peter did a great job with this book. The characters are great and you can really empathize with Rick in the story and how torn he is. There's a lot of talk about life and death and what truly makes life worth living. If you're into macabre type things with a little satire, definitely check this one out.
Death, also known as 'Rick Black,' goes on a dating show to find romance. Is hilarious and mesmerising. What a different read to anything I've read before.
Ronnie Thrumo had me howling! 🤣 what a name, and the poncy ego to go with it! I loved the deep, meaningful conversations between Rick and Luna. They were so moving in an ethereal way.
I really enjoyed how easily this book flowed. It was full of energy, kept me engaged, and wanted more. I never thought I'd read a book about the Reaper going on a dating show! But gosh, am I glad I did! The plot twist was not expected! I'm looking forward to reading more of Victor's books!
This is a fresh and original mix of dark humor, deep thoughts, and surprising emotion. The story strikes a balance between zany and poignant, with memorable characters and sharp dialogue that reveal the messiness and beauty of human connection.
Thomas Busby’s narration brings Rick’s voice to life with nuance and charm, perfectly capturing both the character’s ancient weariness and dry wit. His performance adds a rich emotional layer to an already thoughtful and entertaining story.
Sharp and surprisingly moving, Soul Connection is a must for fans of quirky, soul-searching fiction with a gothic twist!
I rated this 4 stars because, while the story is moving and beautifully written, I felt like certain moments could have been explored more deeply to make an even stronger impact. There were parts where I wanted to linger longer and dive further into the emotions and complexities of the characters.
That being said, Soul Connection is a powerful read that leaves you reflecting on life, love, and the things that truly matter. If you’re looking for a heartfelt story with emotional depth and a touch of destiny, this book is well worth picking up
"Soul Connection" by Victor Peter is an interesting take on falling in love. Rick is going on a dating show to find love. He meets different people and gets to pick who he has a connection with. The twist is that Rick is the Grim Reaper. As Rick starts to have a connection with one of the women from the show he is struggling to balance both his job and his love life. As he moves further into the relationship with his connection things start to go wrong and he doesn't know why. I recommend this book to those that think of the unknown.
This is a story of falling in love not the way we know.
Rick Black an normal sounding name but he has been roaming the earth for centuries as the Grim Reaper guiding souls to their final place, but even he gets lonely, he enters a game show to help him find love. As he gets to know the people and who he connects with things start to go wrong and he doesn’t know why.
Quite an interesting little tale. Rick goes looking for love on a dating show, however he isn’t your typical bachelor he’s the Grim Reaper, tasked with guiding souls to the afterlife but he meets a soul that connects with his will he be able to take it to the afterlife?
The blending of horror vibes and a dating show was an interesting concept I quite enjoyed. Soul connection had humour, wit, banter, suspense and heartache. Its engage however I did find it to be a bit repetitive at times.
I give this book 4.5 ⭐️s. Although this is not the type of book I usually read. I can say that I actually enjoyed this book. It just shows that everyone gets lonely and wants to find love. It was beautifully written and I will be reading more books from this author.
I was torn on this one. While I initially liked the concept, I couldn’t help but feel that this quickly got repetitive. Also, a lot of it was very cheesy. Blending a horror vibe with a dating show just didn’t hit the mark for me.
Don't go in thinking Dating Game or Love Connection! There is a shout out to The Adam's Family but no Chuck Woolery! 😅🤣😂 Not sure if the author plans a sequel but it did kinda end on a cliffhanger...it was a fun read
Nothing but entertainment at its darkest. The Grim Reaper on a dating game? This book will definitely twist your mind just a little more than you expect. Read this one.
I absolutely loved this story. It is so different from what I normally read of Victor's. He sure hit this one out of the park! I would love to read more like this one. You follow Morticia and Rick. A grim reaper on a game show designed to find love. This is a mystery and comedy all in one.
I Love How Victor Had Used The Old Fashioned Dating Shows As The Basis For This Book And Showed The Grim Reaper In A Light That Is Different To How He Is Normally Perceived.
