Pretending to date? Simple.
Pretending it doesn’t feel real? Impossible.

Emily Rodriguez’s New York dreams crumble when she loses both her career and her boyfriend. Now juggling three part-time jobs, she decides to shake things up with an impulsive date. The catch? Her dreamy mystery man turns out to be Joshua Santiago—her best friend Bon’s annoyingly attractive older brother, whom she hasn’t seen in a decade.

Back in Manila for a wedding, Emily and Joshua are caught in a storm of stressful situations—including her ex-boyfriend showing up with his new date and Joshua’s mother playing matchmaker. As a temporary solution, they hatch a plan to pretend to be a couple until they’re back in New York.

With rules that seem simple enough—no feelings, no messy attachments—they think they have it all figured out. After all, Josh is a serial casual dater, and Emily is just getting over a long relationship.

But as boundaries dissolve and feelings intensify, they must confront the possibility that their staged romance could evolve into something profoundly real.

I'm honestly just a hopeless romantic who loves to write and puts my book/s out there for the world to see!

My novels have 3 things: Filipino representation, low-conflict plots (because life is enough to make us anxious), and a writing style that’s equal parts humor and heart.

❝ Two months ago, I had a Wall Street Job, a Manhattan apartment, and a “perfect” boyfriend who didn’t cheat on me. Today? I’m in a sticky apron, behind the counter at a poorly lit cafe, and making lattes for a teenager who thinks giving out weird names is peak comedy. ❞

After Bonita and Ryan’s whirlwind romance, wedding bells are ringing, and Emily Rodriguez and Josh Santiago are both on the guest list. Emily Rodriguez’s New York dream didn’t turn out the way she’d hoped. Now juggling three part-time jobs, she returns to Manila, hiding the truth behind her carefully crafted image. Joshua Santiago, meanwhile, has spent years avoiding commitment, buried in work and fleeting first dates, until a chance encounter with a stranger shouting in a New York alleyway unexpectedly pulls him in.

When they discover they’re heading to the same wedding, a fake dating deal feels like the perfect cover. But what starts as pretend slowly begins to feel real. Because the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to keep up the act and the easier it is to imagine what love could feel like.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ੈ Characters

Emily “Em” Rodriguez - has always been the type A to Bonbon’s laid-back type B. The organized, rule-following, resilient friend everyone admired. Once the hotshot accountant who moved to New York chasing big dreams, her reality now looks very different. She’s now juggling three part-time jobs and doing everything she can to keep up appearances. Rather than admit the truth, she hides behind the image of being the ever-so-perfect daughter and friend, afraid of letting anyone down.

Joshua “Josh” Santiago - after leaving the Philippines at nineteen to escape his parents, Josh has spent years building a life of independence in New York. Shaped by a troubled childhood, he keeps commitment at a distance, burying himself in work and numbing the loneliness with a string of first dates that never lead anywhere. Because it’s easier that way, guarded and far from the chaos he fought so hard to escape.

⊹ ࣪ ˖ੈ Thoughts

When I thought that BonBon was the character I loved dearest, I was proven wrong when I met Emily. Long story short, Kyra wasn’t playing with that dedication; this was truly for the eldest daughters out there, and I couldn’t have related more!😭💯

‧˚ ꒰ 🏙️ ꒱ plot & story ₊˚⋆

❝ Things will happen and you won’t understand them, and that’s okay. Just… let them happen, you owe it to yourself. ❞

This hit all the right places! eldest x eldest, I can do it x I know, but I want to do it for you, meet cute, best friends older brother, wedding setting, fake dating, force proximity, yearning, asdfghjkl tbh I might have malfunctioned with all these tropes altogether. I might have spoiled you a little with listing these, but I just couldn’t stop myself. Aside from that, there's so much more, and I’ve never related to a story this hard till now! I you love the tropes I’ve listed and want a good time just go read this!😩‼️

‧˚ ꒰ 💋 ꒱ characters ₊˚⋆

❝ This is the life of the eldest daughter, right? You’re not just responsible for yourself; you’re responsible for everyone else too. ❞

Emily oh Emily, you mirror all my thoughts, feelings, and pieces of who I am. She is peak eldest daughter-core, and I felt so deeply connected to her. More than once, I caught myself thinking, “same. I’d do that too,” or “yup, I’d overthink this exact moment”. There’s something about her that speaks volumes. From one eldest daughter (me) to another (her), she made me feel valid, seen, and understood in a way I didn’t even know I needed.🥺

❝ Who takes care of you? ❞

My oh my heaven-sent Josh! I have such a weakness for this kind of man! The “I know you can do it yourself, but I want to do it for you” type. That alone had me melting and seeping into the floor. I thought Ryan was charming (he still is), but Josh? Josh is the real charmer. His flirty comebacks, that effortless charisma, and the way he bantered with Emily? Absolutely scrumptious. This man was ✨whipped✨ in the best way possible, and I adored how he never once let Emily feel unloved, unworthy, or overlooked. He showered her in every love language known to mankind, just constantly showing her the kind of love she deserved. Oh where can I find my own Josh? Cause I need someone like him in my life! 💳💥💳💥💳

‧˚ ꒰ 🌹 ꒱ romance ₊˚⋆

❝ So, we’re just... playfully flirting, harmlessly yearning, and enjoying each other’s company until we go our separate ways in five days. ❞

Honestly, they’re just perfect and meant for each other. Being the eldest in their families gave them a quiet, unspoken bond, both carrying silent weights they never put into words, yet somehow, they saw straight into each other. From childhood neighbors to distant strangers, and finally to the one person who made the world feel softer, safer, and full of feeling again🥹❣️

I’m usually not a big fan of fake dating, but I absolutely devoured this one!🙂‍↕️ I was like a rabid dog (if you know the meme I'm talking about) completely hooked on every glance, every hand hold, every flirty tease moment between them. Even though they kept insisting it was just temporary and pretend (ofc we all knew better👀), their chemistry was just electric. Their love may have taken its time to fully bloom, but honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.💯

‧˚ ꒰ 🛠️ ꒱ concerns ₊˚⋆

❝ You deserve happiness, even if it scares you. ❞

I really wanted to rate this higher because I honestly loved and related to it so much, but I just wish we got more of Josh’s story. I loved Emily’s journey and how she slowly learned to let herself feel, but knowing what Josh had been through, I found myself wanting to dive deeper into his past and his emotions. Also, the back to New York part could’ve happened a bit quicker, and the ending aaaaa I just wanted a few more pages to soak in the sweetness! That said, none of these are major issues, just personal wishes from someone who got too attached and emotionally invested lol.

‧˚ ꒰ 🏕️ ꒱ final thoughts ₊˚⋆

❝ Maybe we're all a little lost in our own way. We just need someone to hold our hand while we figure out where to go. ❞

This was the most relatable book in the series and definitely my favorite (so far)🤩! Emily felt like a complete reflection of myself, and Josh was everything I could have ever hoped for. Together, they fit like puzzle pieces. Imperfect on their own, but made to complete each other. Every moment between them felt like part of a bigger picture, one I could just lose myself in. Watching as their love quietly brought all the pieces together. And when it finally did, it was soft, beautiful, and full of the kind of love that felt like home. Miss Ma’am Kyra, you really got me with this one! Now, onto the third book!🏃🏻‍♀️💨

"Maybe we're all a little lost in our own way. We just need someone to hold our hand while we figure out where to go."

I'm extremely grateful to Kyra for having me as part of the ARC team!!!

3.5⭐ I absolutely loved Emily & Josh's story which highly resonated with me cuz I'm an older sibling too! The inner turmoil that they go through & the struggle they face to stand up for what they want instead of doing what's expected of them is so real, and Kyra did a wonderful job of portraying that vulnerability of being the older sibling so well.

Read if you love
- Filipino culture & setting
- best friend's brother
- fake dating
- casual dating MMC x dedicated FMC (he only changes his lifestyle for her & I'm a sucker for it😭🤌🏻✨)
- opposites attract
- one bed❎ one tent✅
- taking care of the sick
- small town

This is the second book in the Magnolia Heights series, which consists of two interconnected standalones as of now & will have two more in the future (group of four female best friends, each getting their own love story). As I mentioned in my review of the first book, I'm absolutely in love with Kyra's writing bcoz it's so relatable & she makes you instantly connect with the characters too! And what I loved in this book are the numerous pop references!!!! You guys know I love Taylor Swift, Sabrina & a lot more artists, and I noticed a lot of lines that hinted at their songs & it made my heart swell and I went back & forth to listening to the songs & reading this masterpiece, so it was a wonderful reading experience for me😌💗 And I got to mention that the author always shows the natural beauty of Philippines which creates this sense of calmness in us & also makes us want to visit the places immediately!!! (In the first book, it was the island of Batanes, and in here we get to see Mount Pulag😍)

Also, another huge plus point in this series is the female friendships - Bon, Emily, Kate & Haley are the epitome of true friends who care for you & will be there for you no matter what without judging you for even a split second, and I absolutely love that!!!!
"They're my family. Always have been. Always will be." - these lines are so true of these women cuz there's so jealousy between em, only genuine love and care.

Now to come to the main characters of this installment, we have Emily Rodriguez the responsible older sibling who has to take care of the family, and has to do what's right for them. She never once felt it to be a burden or nuisance while growing up but when everything falls apart in New York, she's left with conflicted feelings as to doing what she wants Vs doing what's the right thing to do as the breadwinner of the family.
Home isn't a place. It's the people you love, the memories you treasure, and the self you've worked so damn hard to embrace. - And the way she comes to terms with her mother & realises that all of em wants what's best for her and goes to follow her dreams was such a heartwarming journey to witness, and I was extremely proud of Emily for choosing her at the end!!!

As for my new fav book bf, Joshua Santiago who happens to be a non-believer in true love and relationship bcoz he grew up witnessing his parents fight and yell at one another, and he wants nothing to do with marriage. And bcoz of his complicated family, he left for New York 10 years ago and has been taking care of his family from a distance. Joshua isn't one for a lifelong relationship & he's terrible at opening up to people as well cuz he doesn't know how to express what he feels!! He often wonders whether people would stay or leave if they get to see his flaws & all, and chooses to always be a casual dating guy who's charming and never lets anyone see his true nature until Emily!!! Even he doesn't understand how but she brings out the best in him & makes him want to open up and be emotional & share everything he goes through, and eventually does all these & more. And as much as it was hard-hitting, it was also comforting to see him have someone on his side, to whom he can share everything & not be judged.

And I was going crazy waiting for these two to finally ask each other out for real & confess their true feelings!!!! It was the only gripe I had with the book cuz the slowburn was extremely harder in his installment cuz the lines between the fake dating blurred way earlier & these two knew that as well yet chose to still keep up that facade & not speak up which was extremely frustrating for me!!!😭😭

Other than that, I absolutely loved this read & I'm also super excited to read the next installment which may be a sports romance?!👀

ARC Review:
Between Here and There by Kyra Ysabel 🌹
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I loved this second book better than the first! Probably 'cause I'm a sucker for bad boys? Joshua's my new book boyfriend. Lol

"And in that moment, one simple thought fills my mind: She is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. More beautiful than the sunrise. And I don’t just mean her face this time. I’ve seen her bare her heart. Her thoughts. Her struggles. I’ve seen all that she’s had to live with. And no sunrise can ever compare to that level of beauty."

For real now, I lived for the tension in this book. Electrifying, heart-pumping tension between Joshua and Emily. The pining! Their banter. Their chemistry is undeniable, it's oozing within the pages of the book. ❤️‍🔥

Tropes: bad boy x career woman. forced proximity. distressed princess x knight in shining armor. fake dating. best friend's brother. childhood friend. slow burn. not spicy.

I highlighted a lot! And knowing it's by a Filipina author, I'm amazed how she was able to tug at my heart strings at a level int'l authors do with me. Thank you, Kyra, for gifting me an advanced copy of your second book! 🥰❤️

Man, I badly want physical copies of Magnolia Heights!!

*ARC Review*

Thank you again, Ms Kyra for the ARC of the 2nd book in the series. It's nice that you made this one the 2nd rather than the first because it was easy for me to absorb the story. I can't help but compare this one to the first book. The first one was a cutesy type of story but this one made me feel a mix of emotions. In some parts, I was trying hard not to kick my feet while reading it in public and in other parts, I was literally in tears.

It was a fast read, honestly. I was just too busy and tired with work so it took time. As an eldest daughter in a slightly dysfunctional family, I kind of relate to it. I was also someone who craved warmth and as a high achiever myself, I always feel the need to hide things because of high expectations, pride and the fear of failure.

I like how the scenes don't feel forced and rushed. There were typos but because it's an ARC, this can still be improved.

.“Because home isn’t a place. It’s the people you love, the memories you treasure, and the self you’ve worked so damn hard to embrace.”

Emily’s juggling 3 jobs in New York and she met a stranger and they had a dinner together, only for that stranger to be her best friend’s brother, Joshua. As they both need to go back to the Philippines, they decided to fake date keep their families and the ex-boyfriend off their back.

I like Emily as a character, in a way that even though I personally couldn’t relate to her, but she’s so true and strong, a whole definition of girl boss that is dealing with the cards she was given. Josh, felt too perfect that he felt fictional so he kinda felt flat for me.

The whole book was too long for my liking and was overly too sweet (that I started a horror book for palate cleanser) and there's a lot of filler scenes imo, but overall it was a great book but I still love the first one more.

This book was a slowburn that we saw both characters developed feelings for each other as the time goes by and also saw how they both grew as a person. The yearning, the overthinking, the little touches were all great little details that added to a great book.

One thing I did love was the settings of New York and Magnolia Heights. It felt like I was there living in the moment with the characters. I also did love the whole found family aspect of it, how the friend group is now growing and the whole community of Magnolia Heights.

I am looking forward to the next book because I think I’m gonna resonate with the FMC.

⭐ ʀᴀᴛɪɴɢ:

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Solid 4/5

📝 ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ (ꜱᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀꜱ!!!):

I was feeling a little bit of a slump after reading all 5 ACOTAR books that I soft dnf-ed Chasing Riddick, this cured it a lil bit. The reviews were right! The tension and banter in this was so much better. I couldn't highlight most of it because they would flirt every few paragraphs. I also think I connected more with Josh & Emily since they're both the eldest sibling that had to step up. I also love the fact that there was more of the 'I think I might actually be in love with you' tension more than the sexual part. I always love a good casual dater/no second dates/sex only guy but then you came along type of thing AND THE FACT THAT he's always been her protector ever since. The blossom from seeing him only as an older brother to potentially her partner for the res of her life was *chef's kiss. I NEED A JOSHUA IN MY LIFE HELLO? ONE ORDER PLEASE.

💬 ꜰᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ Qᴜᴏᴛᴇ:

⤷ "But you have to be ready."

"For what?"

"To have your breath taken away," I say playfully.

"Nice of you to assume you haven't already done that."

⤷ Looking at her again, I feel the pull. The undeniable, all-consuming pull to lean in, to take her hand, to make her laugh just a little longer, a little louder.

Because for the first time in a long time, this doesn't just feel like home. It feels like something I've been searching for my entire life.

📚 ꜱᴇʀɪᴇꜱ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛꜱ:

I loved this sm better. Sorry Ryan & Bon but Grumpy x Sunshine doesn't top Fake Dating my Best friend's Brother. This book made me giggle at 3am, kicking my feet.

🧠 ꜰɪɴᴀʟ ᴛʜᴏᴜɢʜᴛꜱ:

100% a yes. 10/10 would recommend. It's a cute cozy read. I can't wait for the next book since the fmc's name is literally my name and she's a reader, too. That's me af. Anyway, NEXT!

Thank you to the author for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I adored this so much! The fake dating, slow burn romance tropes that I love, , done so well! It had moments of hilarious banter between the two main characters, and there were also tenderhearted kilig moments that had me giggling and kicking my feet 😍 It also captured the typical Filipino overseas worker's family really well, showing the expectations, struggles and responsibilities that comes with being the breadwinner and eldest one in the family. It also showcased the bond that exists in a close friend group/sisterhood that made me miss my friends 😭☺️ The Magnolia Heights community is so typically Filipino as well, with the gossipy neighbors (all the Marites!) and close-knit families who look out for each other. There was also a sort of woman's realization that she can take charge of her own life, both career- and relationship- wise that I found very empowering as well. And I just realized that I love the "in love with my best friend's older brother" trope too much 😍 I really love this book and one I highly recommend 🥰

The second book in the Magnolia Heights series offers a fresh, emotional standalone romance that’s sure to captivate readers. It follows Emily, a Wall Street accountant dealing with the fallout of betrayal and the pressure of a high-stakes career, and Joshua, her best friend Bon’s older brother, who has intentionally distanced himself from his dysfunctional family.

Their paths first cross in New York as strangers, sharing a fleeting but electric connection. Later, at Bon’s wedding in Manila, fate reunites them—but with a twist. To avoid their respective troubles—Emily’s ex, who still won’t let go, and Joshua’s meddling parents—they agree to fake-date. What starts as a practical arrangement quickly evolves into something much more profound, as they discover their bond runs far deeper than either of them anticipated.

I initially thought this would be a light read, much like Between Then and Now, but I was pleasantly surprised by how the plot developed. It unfolds with emotional depth, set against the pressures of family expectations, career struggles, and the journey of emotional healing. Emily’s quiet resilience, combined with Joshua’s evolution from a guarded, emotionally distant man to someone willing to be vulnerable, makes them both compelling and unforgettable characters. Their story explores themes of love, identity, and overcoming past wounds in a way that feels both moving and inspiring.

If you’re a fan of fake-dating tropes, slow-burn romance, and emotionally rich storytelling, Between Here and There is an absolute must-read. Kyra Ysabel has once again crafted a beautifully written story, making this book a perfect choice for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. Whether you're already familiar with her work or diving in for the first time, this book is a delightful, heartwarming treat.

happy release daaaay, between here and thereeee!! aaaaaa finally, this book will be hitting the shelves today 🥰

HUGE thank you to ms. kyra for giving me free ebook copies of her wonderfully written books (between then and now & between here and there) and allowing me to be part as one of the reviewers for ARC of between here and there ⭐🫶🏻

AAAAAAAA this book!! a huge touch to my heart! not because i am the older sister or something, but as someone who is "bunso (youngest in siblings), it's very heartwarming to know that this is what life looks like to the oldest daughters/sons 🫂 I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK U FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK 🥹 you guys are amazing 😭🫶🏻

tbh, i'm not a big fan of slow burn BUT THIS ONE IS AN EXCEPTION—i really enjoyed how this book burns slowly but sureeeely!! the story is well-written and carefully planned (although what upsets me that leads to why this is just 4 ⭐ bc i kinda developed a slump during the beginning—where they don't know each otherrr and it turns really questionable & awkward for me—like it's so predictable BAJSHJAHAUAH)

BUT OVERALL, i loved and enjoyed this book so much compared to the first one—this feels much more based on real-life experience & it just touches my emotions as the youngest who have no idea what suffers the daily life of the oldest. hugs 🫂

THANK U AGAIN, MS. KYRA! you're awesome. don't stop writing <3

I don't even know how to start with this review. I had a thousand iterations of this review before I decided to sit down and write it. Do I start with a scream to the void because of the amount of pain and comfort this book has given me? Do I start by making it known that I, too, am a first born daughter with responsibilities similar to both Emily and Joshua, and that this book was like a warm blanket on a cold summer night? Do I preface with the note that this was probably the first book outside Ali Hazelwood where I felt like I was reading through an engineer's mind? Do I start with a smug exclamation that says "Ha! Screw you birth order analyzers, oldest sons and oldest daughters DO work!"? Gathering my thoughts, I'm going to go with my gut and give this review my heart and soul, because that's exactly what it felt like -- my heart and soul being bared out to the world.

If you know me, when it comes to contemporary romance, I like my romance with a little bit of maturity and realism. I like to think of book characters as people I would meet on a regular commute somewhere. That's exactly what this book's characters felt like. Emily, an immigrant accountant from the Philippines, encounters Joshua, a non-committal civil engineer in New York. They have this incredible encounter until they realize that they do know each other, they were from the same neighborhood, and Joshua was Emily's best friend older brother. And they were both coming home to Joshua's sister's wedding. To make their lives a little easier, they decide to fake date, but things get a little more complicated.

Oh the amount of times I just screamed to the void with this book. This book would hurt me by touching things that would hit too close to home. Emily and Joshua are firstborn children and just between us oldest children, we always say "it takes one to know one." Especially in a family-centric society like Filipinos. So I understood every reasoning, every emotion they felt, especially when it came to their viewpoints in relationships, family, and money. This book felt like lying down on my bed after a tough day at work, and as the eldest daughter, that means everything.

This book made me felt seen, and I am truly happy to have read this book. Kyra Ysabel writes with so much emotion, and my god, she writes it well. I also have to give her points for the 'Joshua being a civil engineer part'. My day job is an engineer, not civil, but microelectronics, but I know enough that our profession, in general, does not get enough or proper representation in literary media. Joshua really got me thinking, "Huh, he sounds like a dude from undergrad", and that says a lot, because the only time I feel like our career path is being represented is through Miss Mæm Ali Hazelwood, so kudos to Kyra.

This is getting long. Long story short, 5 stars. Please read this. Might get my best friend a copy. I will probably go to r/PanganaySupportGroup and literally talk to my reddit firstborn support group about this and never shut up.

I LOOVEEEE THIS BOOK SO MUCH 😭😭😭

As an emotional-sentimental-hopeless romantic girly, I WAS UGLY CRYING to the last chapters just because how good the narration was!!! YESSS AGAIN, Authornim giving justice to the fake-dating, ms. perfectionist x mr. bad boy, shared space, bestfriend's older brother trope! I JUST LOVE EVERYTHING IN THIS BOOK 😭 I really love that the build-up to their romance (AKA their confessions hihihi) was not rushed and was incorporated so goooooood across the whole story. The TENSION, the CHASING, the I LOVE YOUs DESPITE. Such a sucker for thesee! I would also like to highlight how "havey" and flirty the banters were 💯 ANDD PLEASEEE the kilig moments, it makes you wanna fall in love with Josh and Em too! I just can't get over their fake-dating moments in Manila (those 10 days were just *chef's kiss*) THIS WAS YEARNING AT ITS FINEST.

+ Besides the romance going on, the incorporation of relatable Filipino culture references such as the tight-knit neighborhood, can't forget the gossipy neighbours of course, hiking to Mt. Pulag, and such familial expectations from Filipino families. This was also a nod to the eldest daughters who persevere in life! The unseen sacrifices they have to make just to provide for their families. One thing about Ms. Kyra is that she'll surely include something about women empowerment, and that I love! I would also like to highlight how Josh eventually forgave his parents for all of the family trauma he grew up with. Just pure love out there and it was beautifully written.

+ The PERFECT MIX of flirty yet genuine love, the one that makes you let your walls fall down and be vulnerable because for a moment, it feels like home. Scratch that. I feel exactly what home is. Josh was there for Em in times when she needed a knight-in-shining armor and Em was there for Josh when he needed emotional support from someone. As a matter of fact, they took care of each other in ways they didn't knew they needed. Parts of theirselves that needed some love too. They completed each other so damn well!

(One of) My favorite line:
⭐️ “And now, home is Joshua. He’s home in a way I never expected. He’s warm socks on a winter’s night, the calm in the storm, the snort-worthy punchline when life weighs me down. He’s reliability in a world that’s often anything but. Whether it’s in Manila or New York, as long as I can lose myself in his eyes, clutch his hands like they’re my lifeline, and feel his arms wrap securely around me, I’ll know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.” ⭐️

+ As I have stated in the first lines, I WAS UGLY CRYING when reading the last chapters 😭 proving how well-written this book was. P.S. I have read Book 1 which was Bon and Ryan's story. Absolutely loved both! They were great in there own stories. But this book was just something 😭 Maybe it's the flirty moments they've shared, that hike to Mt. Pulag, the "I always got you" moments. Overall, I WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! Please read it ASAP!!! You would not regret it, promise! Also ... Love you Ms. Kyra 😭❤️ Can't wait for the next book!

ARC REVIEW: between here and there by kyra ysabel
release date: 21 february 2025
rating: 3🌟

〰️

emily is living the american dream. at least her family thinks she is. while screaming in the back of an alley, she meets this stranger whom she eventually goes out on a date with. this ‘stranger’, apparently, ended up being joshua — her best friend’s brother. now, both of them have to go back to manila for bon’s wedding and with it comes reality: dysfunctional families & crazy exes.

to get rid of such & for…practicality purposes, emily & joshua decide to fake-date.. after all, 10 days won’t hurt, right?

〰️

PS: this review is going to be quite lengthy because I’m quite happy with how this book turned out. I also see so so much potential from the author & her writing so I’m writing this review out of love 🫶🏼

i. character-building
I love it when books slowly unfold the character’s traits as the story goes along. as a reader, it’s fun to discover a character’s quirks & traits while flipping through the pages. I think it adds charm and builds the connection between the character & the reader.

in this book, though, it felt like a lot was already revealed at the beginning so it felt kinda dragging & there were so many things I had to take note of — and I’m not even halfway through the book. tbh, I kept wondering if it was okay for me to learn so many things about the characters very early on into the story. I believe not every single thing & emotion needs to be narrated early on, so it kinda spoiled the character-building part of the entire plot 😅

ii. sentence construction
the long sentences with separate phrases & lots of commas felt kind of off. they kept appearing every now & then, so it felt a bit burdensome having to piece the message which the author was trying to get across. admittedly, it’s difficult to play around with sentence length while writing, but I think it’s an area wherein the author could probably use some work on — may it be in this book, or in her next future releases.

iii. plot
this one, I have no complaints with!! I loved the slow burn, the tension, and the coherent blend of heavy topics found in most filipino households.

emily is every eldest daughter in an asian household, while joshua… is my newest book boyfriend. HAH. and the residents of magnolia heights? they’re your next-door neighbors belting through the karaoke machine past curfew! it’s a book which showcases the charms of the philippines and its people — and how it’s both a blessing (and a curse) to be a part of such.

〰️

I read in the author’s note that this was actually her debut novel— meaning she wrote this first despite it being the second book in the ‘magnolia heights’ series. and it’s actually pretty good for a debut novel! will definitely read the next few books in the series. congrats to the author! 🤍

ARC Review

Thank you to Ms. Kyra Ysabel for an early copy of “Between Here and There".

Rating: 5/5 ⭐
Release date: February 21, 2025

⚠️ Review contains spoilers, so proceed with caution. I warned you! ⚠️

This is the second installment in the Magnolia Heights series which takes us on a journey with Emily—Bon's best friend—who, after moving to New York for a Wall Street accounting job, faces both personal and professional challenges. With the ex boyfriend cheating on her and now that Bon is getting married, he is bring a date to the wedding. This emotional weight made her feel that the return home will be bittersweet—mix of excitement and worry that sends her into overthinking mode so she goes to have a night out to escape this reality. She meets a stranger, kisses him and tries to forget him because it is a one time thing only. However, that proves to be wrong as she finds out that the stranger she kissed was Joshua, her best friend’s older brother.

What truly stands out in this book is its ability to explore complex themes with nuance. From the burden of being the eldest sibling to the ways family dynamics shape new relationships, the story offer moments of relatability. The depiction of Emily’s struggle with responsibility as the eldest sibling is touching; it’s rare to see such a tender portrayal of someone quietly carrying the weight of their family’s expectations. For anyone who has ever felt like they had to be the strong one, this storyline will hit home. It also highlights Joshua’s struggle to commit after growing up witnessing his parents fighting all the time, thinking that love does not exist and will not exist for him.

The book also addresses the gender disparities in male-dominated workplaces. While it is not explored in great depth, it serves as an important reminder of the challenges women face in professional environments. This inclusion puts the book in a real-world context, so even though hard to accept is a reality that we live in.

The writing seamlessly blends heavier topics with moments of humor and joy. The romantic tension between Emily and Joshua is done beautifully, filled with the kind of chemistry that makes your heart race. Their fake relationship evolves into something genuine, and the journey is both swoon-worthy and deeply satisfying. Joshua, with his cockiness and charm, easily earns a spot as one of my most endearing “book boyfriends” out there.

Overall, this book is filled with heartfelt moments, witty dialogue and feel-good romance. It is certainly something you’d want to read if you want to cozy up or just take a break from reading mystery-thriller books (because that is what I did here). 😜

Between Here and There is the second installment of the Magnolia Heights series, which can be read standalone. It tells the story of Filipino New Yorkers Emily and Joshua. Joshua is Emily’s best friend Bon’s older brother, and she hasn’t seen him in years as he went to New York years before she landed a job there. Both meet in New York as strangers, unbeknownst to them their real identities, but sparks instantly fly between them. It was only when they were on their way back home to Manila for Bon and Ryan’s wedding that they discover that they already knew each other in the past, and both agree to fake date to get Josh’s parents off his dating life and for Emily to avoid unnecessary encounters with her ex-boyfriend, Rob, who is bringing a date to the wedding.

Honestly, this was a very fun read! There’s nothing more exciting than seeing a player fall head over heels in love with someone so unexpectedly. It was a delight seeing Josh fall for Emily, how his playful flirtation with her regardless of whether it was in public for show or when they were just alone together turn into something more was very exciting. Despite what others view him as, Josh is someone everyone can lean on, most especially Emily. He’s dependable and caring, something that Emily needs especially since she feels like she needs to take care of everyone else, Josh is the one taking care of her, and I am absolutely living for it! The author really made this couple’s romance shine through with how much they’re compatible for each other that I couldn’t help but feel kilig while reading this novel. I also really appreciate having both main characters’ POVs and having a glimpse of how Emily has been struggling with her career and her strength in overcoming such obstacles, as well as Josh’s internal struggles with his perception of love because of how he’s grown up with his parents almost always bickering in their house.

I’m excited for others to read Between Here and There! If you enjoyed the first novel Between Then and Now, you’ll definitely enjoy this as well. If this is your first time to read a novel written by Kyra Ysabel, you’re in for a treat!

Between Here and There is the 2nd book in @kyraysabelwrites Magnolia Heights series. It was this book that actually drew me in, when I saw her dedication for the eldest daughters. I bought this one when it went on sale, tried reading it, then kept stopping for one reason or another. I guess I was just meant to read the first book in the series before this, to have better appreciation for it as a whole (each one is a standalone, but I recommend reading everything!)

Anyway, this one is about Emily, Bon's friend, and Joshua, Bon's brother. They kinda grew up together, then ended up meeting as strangers years later when they were both living in New York. Emily works 3 jobs: a barista at a café near a construction site that Joshua's overseeing, a singer at a bar, and a freelance accountant. She's doing her best to support her mom and sister after quitting her fancy Wall Street job due to an incident. But none of her family and friends know she's struggling. On top of it all, she's recently broken up with her boyfriend who cheated on her.

Joshua's battling his own demons from growing up in a chaotic loveless household when he inadvertently meets Emily. They don't recognize each other, but their attraction leads to a kiss. All good coz he's not really a dating kind of person, and she's not about to get into another relationship anytime soon.

Things change however when they finally figure out each other's identities on the way to the Philippines for Bon and Ryan's wedding. Add in meddling families and neighbors, a cheating ex, and they end up in a fake dating ruse.

-‐-----------------

I love how this book, like the first one, takes it's time building romantic tension. I love the humor, the kilig moments, and the "meant-to-be" type of feeling that doesn't feel forced. Like the first book, there are also some random tidbits at the start that alluded to towards the end. (Jorts for BTAN, Phil McGroin for BHAT) It's a nice humorous touch.

Anyway, can't wait for the 3rd book! Finally we get a lead that isn't from their original friend group! (it was starting to get a little incestuous lol jk) And he's half Korean!

I realize that in the past year, I haven’t posted much about romcoms. But if you’ve been following me for a while, you’d know that I’ve been a romcom girlie since 2019. For almost four years, it was my favorite genre to consume. So here is a solid recommendation- BETWEEN HERE AND THERE. Preorder is open- this book release February 21, 2025!

I received an advance copy of this book for our book tour and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Emily and Joshua meet as strangers in New York, until they realize they ARE not and they already have a history. When they return to Manila for a wedding, they were compelled to fake date for a week or so. Then, they’re supposed to go their separate ways back in New York.

Both are emotionally unavailable. Joshua refuses to let love in, while Emily’s heart has just taken a beating. So how do they navigate their growing attraction and intense feelings? What about life outside of love? What role will they ultimately play in each other’s lives?

At 477 pages, this was such a satisfying read. I flew through it, giggling one moment and tearing up the next. I loved the romance- the push and pull, the moments they held back, the times they let go, and that heartwarming realization that they were exactly what each other needed.

Kyra writes engaging and witty dialogue, hard-hitting truths, and themes I strongly resonated with. Most especially about looking after yourself- filling your own cup first so you can share yourself with the people you love.

I was delighted by how Kyra incorporated Filipino family dynamics, settings, and cultural elements throughout the story. That dedication page hits close to home for many- it set the tone of the novel so well.

The story also explores coming to terms with the past and trusting that there are brighter days ahead. Joshua and Emily felt so right for each other after everything, and they deserve the love they have found.

This is one satisfying romcom and I am eager to read this author’s future books! Highly recommend both Between Then and Now and Between Here and There

After reading two books by Kyra Ysabel, I’m completely hooked. Her writing draws you in, making you feel like you’re right there with the characters, experiencing their highs, lows, and everything in between. It’s rare to find a story that immerses you so effortlessly, but Kyra’s books do just that. From the first page to the last, you’re swept away, feeling every emotion as if the characters’ struggles and triumphs are your own.

What really stood out to me in this book was Emily’s internal conflict. The way she wrestled with her emotions and what she thought she should do felt incredibly authentic. I could practically feel her indecision, torn between her heart and mind, struggling to make the right choice. I think we’ve all been there, wanting something but unsure whether it’s what we should really go after. Even in the most intense moments, there was a perfect blend of humor and lightness, preventing the story from becoming too overwhelming. That balance of emotions was refreshing. It didn’t feel like just another dramatic struggle; it felt like a true journey, one that had me laughing, sighing, and holding my breath in equal measure.

As the eldest sister myself, I especially connected with Emily. Her sense of responsibility struck a chord with me. The weight of always having to make the right choices, even when uncertainty looms, felt all too familiar. It’s a quiet struggle, often unnoticed, yet something many of us carry. Seeing that reflected in Emily’s journey felt like reading my own thoughts and emotions, and it was comforting to know someone else shared that same unspoken battle. It made me feel understood.

Then there was the relationship between Emily and Joshua.. oh, that was something special! It wasn’t rushed or forced. Their connection developed naturally, like two people slowly building trust and learning to let their guard down. There was no rush to reach a happy ending. Their chemistry was evident right from the start, slow-burning but undeniable. You could sense that theirs wasn’t just a fleeting attraction. It was real, and it was something that would last.

Overall, Between Here and There was an emotional rollercoaster, but one I’m so glad I took. It wasn’t just a book; it was a journey I didn’t want to end. Now, I’m eagerly awaiting Kate’s story. If it’s anything like this one, I know it’s going to be just as amazing. ❤︎

Tropes: fake dating, bad boy x smart girl , best friend's brother,no feelings okay? , nyc/manila

Lately, I’ve been expanding my reading list by exploring works from Filipino authors. When I received an ARC of Between Here and There ( BHAT ), I didn’t have high hopes—but from the dedication alone, I was instantly hooked. Little did I know it would keep me captivated from start to finish.

Kyra Ysabel has perfectly embodied how an eldest daughter like Emily would do in the situations she experienced. An eldest child, expected to carry everyone's burdens, will always try their best to solve every problem. Asking for help doesn’t come easy for them because they grew up believing they had to be strong on their own. I think these things in the book made me relate to Emily's character.

Joshua's character was perfecty built in the book. A guy that's attractive, cocky and rich developed into the man a character like Emily would fall for. Though he has his own hesitation with commitments, the FMC entering his life made him mature towards the story.
I love how smoothly the story flows. Some scenes were especially fun to read, particularly when the rules were being discussed and created. Some scene made me shed little tears ( chapter 35 at the tree house! ) and then of course there are kilig!

BHAT is set to release on February 21. This is the second book from the Magnolia Heights series but can be read without the first book.

Thank you @kyraysabel for the ARC. Extending thanks also to @thefilipinoshelf

📖ARC REVIEW✨

If you’re looking for an easy yet emotionally gripping read, Between Here and There by Kyra Ysabel is the perfect choice. This book beautifully captures love, heartbreak, and second chances in a way that tugs at the heartstrings.

The story follows Emily and Joshua, two individuals whose paths cross once again when Joshua returns home to Manila from New York to attend his sister’s wedding—who also happens to be Emily’s best friend. To exact revenge on her ex-boyfriend, Emily and Joshua agree to pretend they’re in a relationship. However, what starts as a simple arrangement gradually turns into something real as they find themselves falling for each other.

I absolutely loved the writing style; it made the book an effortless and enjoyable read. The emotions felt raw and genuine, and I found myself deeply connected to Emily’s struggles. As an OFW, I resonated with her role as the breadwinner of her family. I understand the weight of that responsibility and the sacrifices it demands. Like Emily, I once doubted true love after experiencing heartbreak, which made her journey even more relatable to me.

This book wasn’t just a romance; it was an emotional rollercoaster. There were moments that moved me to tears, making me feel every bit of Emily’s pain, hesitation, and eventual healing. It’s a story that reminds us that love can find its way back into our lives when we least expect it.

Overall, Between Here and There left a lasting impact on me. It’s heartfelt, beautifully written, and filled with emotions that linger even after turning the last page. I’m giving this book a well-deserved 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

You’ll love this book if you enjoy:
🌹 Fake dating

🌹 Bestfriend’s brother
🌹 Childhood friends to (unintentionally) strangers to lovers
🌹 Sworn off a relationship
🌹 Small town romance
🌹 Close-knit friendships

。⋆୨୧˚ Ever the responsible eldest daughter, Emily Rodriguez is struggling to get her life together when everything seems to fall apart. When she returns home for her best friend’s wedding, she’s forced to project a lie that she has everything all figured out so as not to disappoint her family and friends for what she considers her “failure.” And that lie involves having a playboy of a boyfriend, proving that she’s moved on from her ex. Except that the lie they so perfectly act on doesn’t exactly seem like a lie to their hearts. She has always been the strong, independent, and empowered woman until... well, Josh, her best friend’s Kuya.

。⋆୨୧˚ As the eldest daughter who also happens to work in finance like Emily, I deeply resonate with her story. Ms. Kyra’s writing is so reverberating that I find myself highlighting, annotating, (and crying 😭) every now and then. This book really makes me feel seen, and I am so comforted by that. Thank you, Ms. Kyra, for writing this masterpiece. It is way beyond all the fun and swoons. It really hit home with every struggle of Emily, and it makes me appreciate the Joshua to my Emily even more. Now, I’m going to stop because my tears are threatening to fall even as I write this review. 🥹

📚 ARC Review 📚

The premise of the story is simple: Emily, the breadwinner eldest daughter, whose life in New York is not what she thought it would be, encounters her best friend’s brother, the commitment-phobe, Joshua. Together, they come up with a plan to stop the people of Magnolia Heights from asking too many questions that they, themselves, are not prepared to answer.

The fireworks between Emily and Joshua, while immediately apparent, leave the readers wanting for more as each chapter gives so many (sometimes too many) twists and turns that allow either Emily or Josh to distract themselves from facing the undeniable chemistry between them.

I kind of get it, because what the two main characters have between them is, somehow, too easy. So the hijinks and twists are necessary for more of a story. By this, I mean that the two being together was a foregone conclusion so the things separating them (i.e., childhood trauma) seemed like mere obstacles to something that we already knew was going to happen. Not even the presence of Emily’s ex presented a relationship-destroying conflict. In other words, not much was at stake.

But reading the back-story behind the characters (how author Kyra Ysabel identifies with Emily, how their story is similar to hers with her husband) explains why the story lacked something for me: it is grounded on reality. It doesn’t offer much of an escape in the form of overdramatic confessions or crazy acts of love but this is to be expected because this is closer to real life. I can appreciate that.

Also, a 2 on the spice scale, for so much build up but not too much release (leaving, as it does, a lot to the imagination).

Kyra Ysabel you can be so so happy right now. I've swooned and swooned more and laughed and cried. Everything that you wanted us to experience in this book. When I saw a picture of the dedication of this book I just knew this is a story I had to read as it resonates so so much.

This books takes us on a journey with Emily and Joshua.
Emily... the eldest, that takes care of everything and everyone; an overrhinker with the weight of the world upon her shoulders. Her heart still broken because her boyfriend cheated on her.
Joshua... the 'bad boy' that's afraid of committing and never been in a serious relationship.
They both are born and bread in the Philippines but moved to New York and fate had them met in this one day, not once but twice and magic happened.

They ended up in an agreement to fake date going back to their hometown for Joshua's sister's wedding for Emily to get back at her ex and to stop Joshua's mom from nagging him about relationship and setting him up with dates with the town's girls

The more they spend time together and acting the more they started to fall for each other but both so stubborn to admit because of their fears and past issues.

What I love most is that Joshua is being described as this bad kind of a guy but through out the story he's always saying the right thing and he's been so attentive to Emily and he just became one of my favorite MMC.

This book was not just about a feel good romance but about community, friendship, growth, taking ownership, it's about HOME (last pages 🥹)

Thank you Kyra for an opportunity to read this and to give an honest review. It will stay with me.

Another wonderful read from Ms. Kyra! I truly appreciate her talent for crafting stories that resonate deeply, and this book is no exception. One of my favorite themes in her work is the “found family” trope, which she explores beautifully here. The strong bonds among the girls and their unwavering support for Emily, the FMC, are heartwarming. Even when Emily resists help, her friends quietly stand by her, offering love and companionship in the most genuine way.

My heart goes out to Emily and Joshua as they navigate life in a new world, consistently being each other's anchor regardless of their circumstances. Emily’s resilience is especially inspiring—her journey from feeling like a burden to blossoming into a woman who embraces her independence is truly moving. As someone still navigating similar growth, I found her evolution incredibly empowering. Joshua, on the other hand, remains composed despite feeling overwhelmed, wanting to forget but never truly forgetting—his loyalty and depth add so much richness to the story. Their friendship, and eventual realization of their love, is portrayed with such tenderness and authenticity, making their journey even more meaningful.

Ms. Kyra, I am genuinely grateful for your dedication to representing Filipino culture and family dynamics with such authenticity and heart. Your storytelling shines a light on heartfelt conversations and important topics that deserve more attention. Thank you once again, Ms. Kyra, for sharing your talent and your voice—your work continues to inspire and touch lives.

As an eldest daughter the dedication really intrigued me and I was counting down the days until I could read the book.

I wasn't sure what to expect- I didn't read the blurb and I didn't even realise this was book to until the end when I read Kyra's note about the book. Even though I had no idea what to expect bar the dedication, I really enjoyed the book!

What I loved about the book?
The way it made me squeal, kick my legs in the air, giggle.

Closed door romance- now don't get me wrong I like an open door romance occasionally but most of the time I skip the spicy scenes to get to the rest of the plot. josh and emily are just so cute. Seeing how they explore their feelings.

The pressures of being a child dealing with things your parents should have to deal with. I felt this in my soul- I ended up deleting the massive paragraph that followed this point as it should really be something I speak to a therapist about aha but yeah let's just say I completely understood where emily and to an extent josh felt the need to be guarded.

I also see a lot of myself in Emily, her coping mechanisms, her need to research everything in order to prepare for a worst case scenario etc I feel like Emily and I would be friends if she were real. Hmmmm now to manifest a Joshua- that would be nice

This is a fake Lovers romance and I am wanting more so I'm off to read the first book in the Magnolia Heights Series.

I honestly adored this book. The chemistry between Emily and Joshua was so natural and effortless. Joshua’s lines as he flirts are the true highlights of this book for me! Lol. I was burning up and melting. The best friend’s brother trope really worked for me! 😂 I loved how, amidst the loneliness and pressures of New York, they both found a sense of home in each other, all while navigating the tension and slow burn of their connection. It was heartwarming to witness a casual dater, who’s hesitant to fall in love, slowly letting go—and a miss “perfect planner” finally embracing the unexpected, scary, yet sweet intrusion in her life. The inner dialogue, the yearning, the self-restraint, and the self-reprimands they do in their heads—it was chef’s kiss. 😮‍💨

Emily’s role as a family breadwinner and Joshua’s hesitance toward commitment also felt relatable. Both characters’ struggles were portrayed with such authenticity, making the story even more impactful.

On another note, I appreciated the Filipino elements woven into the story. As I’m just starting to re-explore Filipino literature, it was refreshing to read such a relatable romance that resonated with me on a deeper level as a Filipino myself. 💕

If you enjoyed Between Here and Now (aka the first book of Magnolia Heights), or if you love romcoms in general, I’m sure you will definitely enjoy this one!

This is an easy five stars.

Review:
Another 5⭐️ read for me and another book for my top read of the year! 🥰 Between Here and There is the second book of a 4-book series.

I love Bon and Ryan so much but I love Emily and Joshua more!!

🌹 I can somehow relate to Emily as the eldest daughter and having to bear the responsibilities as well as handling all expectations. Like you can’t make any mistakes in your life but I love how she was able to overcome a lot of her fears and be the person she dreams for herself to be.

🌹 As for Josh, for someone is a commitment phobe, he is on another level! If Ryan is a green flag and has a floral mouth, Josh on the other hand is a walking green forest with a garden mouth! I love how he takes care and understands Emily in so many ways.

🌹Emily and Josh has a different chemistry and dynamic where you will literally feel the kilig and everything. They take care, understand, and flirt with each other like no other. I love how they have their own little world when they are together, how they understand each other with just communicating with their eyes. They are really meant for each other.

Overall, I love this book better than the first one cause this book just gave a different feel, I even shed a few tears at some part of the book. Also, I think the fake dating trope just brings a different feel than the friends to lovers trope for me.

I can’t wait for the third book especially after the sneak peak we had from the epilogue 🤍

Oh god, my favorite trope written by Kyra. I’ve already read tons of fake dating novels, and while the execution of this one was similar in some ways, the story of Emily and Joshua tugged at my heart the most. It wasn’t just the simple attraction, the lingering gazes, or the electrifying touch when holding hands during the pretend period. This story… there was more to it.

Their growth together, their influence on each other’s better versions, and their reliance on one another... it wasn’t for the sake of the pretend dating. They genuinely cared for each other. Both being the eldest in their families and never having anyone take care of them, their connection felt real and earned. It was an ideal situation for a pretend dating trope, but it was written so realistically that I was completely convinced.

I tend to yap a lot in my reviews when I love a story, but honestly, I felt sad writing this one because it made me realize the story had ended. It was such a rollercoaster journey filled with squealing, crying, and pulling my hair out. I’m giving it 6-star in my personal rating, but I seriously considered giving it 7-star.

This is my second book by Kyra, and I was both excited and nervous to see if she could live up to my expectations. After reading this, she’s solidified her place as an auto-buy author for me. I'll start inhaling all her future works. Please take good care of me, Kyra!

started reading this book during my midterms exam season so whenever i get a study break, i read a chapter or two to keep me motivated. this book is one of the reasons why i stayed sane during exam week lol.

i rate this book a 5 because it captures the true essence of a filipino household and community. the nostalgic feeling of coming home after being gone for a while, the nosy neighbors yet also loving, and the get-together gatherings.

i relate to the fmc because i am also an eldest daughter and mind you life as an eldest daughter is hard so what more from a filipino family. everyone is depending on you and in a world full of responsibilities, like emily, you just want a place or maybe someone to run to and become your escape.

emily's friendship with bon, kate, and haley is so precious to me. i love them so much. they all have their unique traits and i cannot wait to read kate's story!

i hope all emily's out there find their very own joshua. their love story is so cute and i get it now why they're so bagay because they're both eldest siblings so they understand each other well! (sana maka hanap din ako ng ganyan choz!)

overall, it was a very fun, light, and easy book to read. thank you so much for this wonderful book, ms. kyra! i am now one of your readers because of this! 💘
