Dead men can’t catch killers. But maybe with the right help, they can bend the rules from the afterlife.

Drug dealer AJ has just discovered he’s been murdered. Trapped in the surreal complexities of the afterlife, he realizes he’s still bound in service to his killer, the ruthless drug kingpin Governor Tyson. Meanwhile, homicide detective Maleek Shapiro is closing in on "skooches", an enigmatic and dangerous drug at the heart of the case.

As Shapiro edges closer to proving the case against the governor, the investigation throws him into a maze of mystical experiences, unsettling encounters, and nightmarish realms where the boundaries between life and death—and dreams and reality—blur. Dead bodies begin to pile up as the untouchable governor storms towards his sinister goals without regard for consequences.

Can Shapiro, with AJ’s help from beyond the grave, stop the governor or will they all be sacrificed at the altar of his personal ambitions?

A poetic, spiritual and gripping exploration of the human psyche and the thin line between life and death, INTO THE GRAY SCALE blends dark fantasy with crime drama, unraveling raw emotions and surreal twists that challenge the boundaries of reality itself!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Into the Gray Scale is a contemporary, dark fantasy story featuring a varied ensemble cast. The book opens with an introduction to AJ and his work as a drug runner for Tyson. It then shifts to Stanley’s job as a prison guard and his interactions with inmates, whom we later learn are victims of Tyson’s mundane crimes, like sex-trafficking, and interdimensional ones, like forcing his victims to act as blood sacrifices required to create a more potent version of skooches. By the time Maleek is introduced, it’s well established that there isn’t a single main character, but Maleek does represent both the hope that someone has the wherewithal to hold Tyson accountable and, eventually, queer identities.

Into the Gray Scale was a deeply interesting read overall. There are interwoven story lines and morally gray characters who band together for a higher purpose. There’s plenty to contemplate as the author describes one version of the human experience and admirable consistency in describing how it works.

Pour yourself a thoughtful glass, because Into the Gray is not your typical dark romance—it’s a slow, moody sip that lingers, pulling you deeper with every page.

At its heart, this story follows Nyla, a woman carrying the scars of her past, and Luca, a man as steady as he is mysterious. Their paths cross in unexpected ways, and what begins as caution slowly blooms into trust, connection, and a love that feels both fragile and unshakable.

Oges Mobuogwu builds the world with careful strokes—heavy with atmosphere, layered with secrets, and filled with characters who live in the in-between spaces of grief, healing, and desire. This isn’t a story that rushes; it takes its time, allowing the emotional depth to settle in like the warmth of bourbon after a long day.

What worked for me:
🥃 The emotional weight—Nyla’s struggles feel raw and real, making her journey toward love and healing resonate.
🥃 The atmosphere—Oges has a knack for painting scenes that feel cinematic, pulling you right into the gray spaces between hope and despair.
🥃 The romance—Luca and Nyla’s relationship feels tender, believable, and ultimately hopeful.

The spice is light—more about intimacy and emotional connection than explicit scenes—but it fits the tone. This isn’t a book that needs heavy heat; the slow-burn tenderness does its own kind of smoldering.

Final Pour: Into the Gray is a hauntingly tender romance about finding light in the shadows. It’s emotional, atmospheric, and perfect for readers who like their love stories served with depth, healing, and just enough heat to keep things warm.

Into The Gray Scale literally takes a reader into something beyond a gray scale. I lack an adequate word to describe how effectively the book transports you to Animmo, a place where you know not of, but somehow are able to acquaint yourself with the rules, ideology and inhabitants. The story is nicely twisted, the characters have rich and diverse backgrounds and the vocabulary of the book is robust. The book can not be explained. It can only be experienced. And to experience it, you must mentally travel Into The Gray Scale...

I loved the depiction of the afterlife. Somehow I found it refreshing too.
I found the gay raunch a but disturbing but I do admit it wasn't gratuitous.
Highly recommended.
