DAWN KURTAGICH IS AN AWARD-WINNING HORROR AUTHOR.

Her debut novel, THE DEAD HOUSE, was a YALSA Top 10 Pick, An Audie Award Nominee and an Earphone Award Winner. It has been optioned for TV by Lime Productions. She is also the author of THE CREEPER MAN / AND THE TREES CREPT IN, NAIDA and TEETH IN THE MIST, and BLOOD ON THE WIND. Her adult debut novel, THE MADNESS, was pre-empted in a two book, six-figure deal and was published in August 2024. Her next adult novel, DEVIL’S THORN, was announced in 2024, another two-book, six-figure deal, forthcoming in 2025.

By the time she was eighteen, she had been to fifteen schools across two continents. The daughter of a British globe-trotter and single mother, she grew up all over the place, but her formative years were spent in Africa—on a mission, in the bush, in the city and in the desert.

She has been lucky enough to see an elephant stampede at close range, a giraffe tongue at very close range, and she once witnessed the stealing of her (and her friends’) underwear by very large, angry baboons. (This will most definitely end up in a book . . . ) While she has quite a few tales to tell about the jumping African baboon spider, she tends to save these for Halloween!

When she was sixteen, she thought she'd be an astronomer and writer at the same time, and did a month-long internship at Cambridge's prestigious Cavendish Laboratories. At the age of 25, she received a life-saving liver transplant. Her doctor’s still have no idea why her original liver (Leonard) failed. She is enjoying life with her new liver, Lucy.

She leaves her North Wales crypt after midnight during blood moons. The rest of the time she exists somewhere between mushrooms, maggots and mould.

Wow! "Madness" is an absolutely chilling and gripping read that seamlessly blends elements of paranormal and psychological mystery, offering a fresh and intriguing perspective on the modern retelling of Dracula infused with Welsh mythology, folklore, and feminist themes. The narrative is filled with kickass, tough, and powerful heroines, adding layers of depth and complexity to the story.

From the moment I started reading, I was completely hooked on the journey of the main character, Mina Murray. As an empathic and intelligent psychiatrist, Mina chose her profession as a means to heal her own pierced and broken soul, grappling with her own obsessions and nightmares that led her to flee her hometown. Leaving behind her best friend Lucy, her first and only love Jonathan, and her eccentric mother—who is rumored to be a witch with her vast knowledge of Welsh folklore and powerful herb concoctions—Mina embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

When Mina receives an email from her estranged friend Lucy, who may still harbor resentment towards her for leaving town without saying goodbye, her carefully constructed daily routine is disrupted. As she reconnects with Lucy, now married to a wealthy husband in the transportation business, Mina is shocked to discover that Lucy exhibits the same troubling symptoms as her latest patient, Renee. Both women are experiencing sleepwalking episodes, delirium, hallucinations, anemia, and worsening rashes, with no clear explanation for their ailments.

As Mina delves deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a disturbing pattern: several young girls, presumed missing, have been found dead, all of whom were lured by a mysterious job opportunity at a prestigious nightclub frequented by the rich and powerful. Is there a secret organization preying on innocent girls from lower-class families?

As Mina's investigation leads her to the dark web, she encounters a group of conspirators whose motives remain unclear. In order to help her friend Lucy, Mina must confront her own dark past and risk everything—including the safety of her loved ones. Will she find the courage to face her own demons and uncover the truth?

Overall, "Madness" is a brilliant horror read that will shake you to the core and leave you on the edge of your seat. It's a gripping and spine-tingling tale that will keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend it, and I eagerly anticipate reading more works by the author!

This was, wow...Dawn Kurtagich, I see you and appreciate you. This book is my tastes to an absolute tee.

Have you ever read a book and thought, this author and I share a brain, because that's what I'm thinking right now.

I didn't even realize this was an actual Dracula reimagining. As one of my favorite novels of all time, I love to see how current authors spin a tale influenced by that story. Kurtagich absolutely nailed it!

I highly recommend the audio format, should you have access to it. It's narrated by one of my favorite narrators of all time, Imogen Church, and her inflection lends itself perfectly to this narrative.

This story is everything you would expect from the cover. It's haunting, atmospheric and gripping. What you may not expect is how modern it is, as well as how impactful the characters arcs become.

I can't believe it's taken me so long to pick up a novel by Kurtagich, but I'll tell you what, I won't be waiting long until I pick up more. If they're this good, I may have a new favorite author on my hands.

Thank you to the publisher, Graydon House, for providing me with a copy to read and review. This will definitely be on my Most Surprising List of 2024!!

Happy Publication Day!

It all starts with a bizarre rash, losing time, weakness, fatigue, nightmares and seizures.

When Dr. Mina Murray’s patient and her childhood friend are found to be suffering from a similar illness, she leaves her tidy and controlled London life after twelve years and returns home. She is determined to figure out what is causing the mysterious illness before it is too late.

I have read three of Kurtagich’s four novels and have enjoyed every single one. And the Trees Crept In and Teeth in the Mist are labeled YA, but don’t let that fool you. I am very particular about the YA books that I read and these are stellar horror plots. I almost think they are too scary for teenagers. I listened to both of these books on audio and can’t recommend them enough. They really add a spookiness to the creepy plots.

When I saw that Kurtagich was releasing an adult thriller, I couldn’t wait to read it. I really wanted the audiobook of The Madness, but it wasn’t available yet. I didn’t even read the synopsis, just blindly downloaded the E-book.

I really enjoyed The Madness, but the plot was not as scary or as original as Kurtagich’s other books. The topic is also not one I usually enjoy reading about, but it doesn’t appear until 3/4 of the way through. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so I assume this is a set up for a series. If you want to know the mystery topic, it is listed in the Goodreads category (this is the twist in the book so I don’t recommend the spoiler). I do plan on continuing this series, as I am fully invested in these characters.

Overall, Kurtagich has proven to be a fantastic horror author. I will be picking up The Dead House soon, as it’s the only one of her books I haven’t yet read.

4/5 stars

Dawn Kurtagich's official debut adult novel! My reading experience of The Madness consisted of the investigation of mysterious psychic trauma...strong, female protagonists, and a labyrinthine, Welsh castle all of which are drenched in the pervasive echoes of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I especially enjoyed the mixed-media storytelling including bits of letters, texts, and message board discussions--so interactive and immersive!
The Madness checks a lot of boxes for thrill seekers and horror hounds!

Mina Murray lives a safe life, a predictable life. It’s the only way that she can tame the chaos and the fear. Working as a psychiatrist in a government-funded facility, she feels that she has the best of both worlds: she can support not only her bank account but her passion. Mina works with women suffering from extreme trauma which is where we met her peculiar new patient, Renee.
Shortly after, a new character is introduced to us… After twelve years of silence, Mina receives an email from her estranged best friend, Lucy, practically begging Mina for her “professional help”. It is with severe hesitation that Mina returns to her hometown of Tylluan to help her old friend but when she arrives, she is forced to face her past along with whatever strange illness her friend is currently suffering from which has odd similarities to her new patient.

This book is being considered by many a “remix” of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with “familiar characters”. Considering I have not yet gotten around to reading Dracula—I know, I know!—I cannot speak to that. I find that I am not usually a fan of modern retellings on classics anyway so I think that that is for the best as I was able to read this story wholly on its own without drawing any comparisons.

Some epistolary parts—audio recording scripts, patient file reports, emails, etc—which I always find intriguing when done well in a story. The synopsis of this sounded quite fascinating but there were plot holes and conveniences that took away from the story for me. I had a difficult time getting in to this book and I had a difficult time finishing it. This one didn’t do it for me but it might just be the perfect spooky season read for you.

Give it a go when it comes out on 08/27/2024! Thank you NetGalley for my digital copy.

This one was not for me. At this point in my reading life, I simply refuse to read any of the many ableist books available to me. I respect myself and not the lazy work of authors who don't understand disability.

Reading Notes:

Three (or less) things I didn't love:

This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.

1. At 25% completion, I had to look up the book description to help anchor me in the story, because I had no clue what was going on from the context. It's a hectic book and it's difficult to follow the thread through.

2. The author uses a lot of words that aren't quite right, like using "penumbra" in place of darkness or shadows. The connotation isn't quite right, as penumbra refers to the edge of shadow, where it separates from the light that borders it.

3. Ketamin is not a sedative and it's being safely used to treat many patients' depression that was historically treatment-resistant. Why is this author treating this medication with such disgust? And other such annoyances that boil down to ableism.

Mina Murray is a therapist living in London. She escaped her small village a decade ago after a traumatic experience sent her running. Since then she's developed OCD as a way to cope.

She's informed she has a new patient, Renee. Renee was found wandering around naked and speaking nonsensically. When Mina meets her she is surprised of her feral nature. Her smell is enough to make anyone heave. Renee is volatile and when guards come in to calm her down Mina notices a disgusting black spotted rash covering her body. Mina worries this may be her most difficult case yet.

Then Mina receives an email from her long lost best friend from home, Lucy, asking for help. They may not have spoken in 10 years but she can't abandon her friend again especially in her time of need.

However, when Mina arrives she realizes that Lucy is experiencing the same symptoms as her patient. Black spotted rash and all. What the hell is happening? You'll need to read this to find out.

This was so good...in the beginning. I was absolutely hooked and intrigued by the tale Kurtagich was spinning. I had so many theories as to what was happening. Then a twist is revealed at the half way mark and I couldn't believe how dumb I was not to have figured it out sooner. Unfortunately, this is also when my interest started to wane. Now to be fair I recently finished a book on this same subject matter that blew me away so that could very well be why I was less enamored with this one.

Future readers: Don't read any reviews or the "twist" will be revealed to you.

The ending is where I really struggled. I just didn't buy it. Not only did I find it all a little predictable but convenient as well. Then the final page leaves me to believe that there will be a sequel in the future. Either that or I just didn't get the ending.

I don't plan to read the sequel if indeed there is one. However, I did find enough here to like that I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another of Kurtagich's books in the future. 3 stars!

I don't like the cover on this but I'm glad I checked out the blurb. It was such an intense and bingable story and I was hooked on the audiobook needing to find our more. The way it all unraveled and the group of characters with the main one was very engaging to read.

Expected publication date: Aug. 27, 2024

Dawn Kurtagich, author of the YA series “The Dead House”, brings a next level, paranormal horror with her new novel, “The Madness”.

Mina Murray is a psychologist, helping women suffering from trauma disorders. After suffering a trauma herself as a young woman, Mina left her hometown of Wales, leaving her mother, lover and best friend behind without a word. Now, years later, Mina’s former best friend, Lucy, reaches out with a desperate cry for help and, of course, Mina races to her side. After seeing Lucy and her illness in the flesh, Mina begins to recognize Lucy’s distinctly odd symptoms as they were also experienced by a patient of hers in London. But how have two very different women, who have never met, have in common? What is causing them to be so ill and how does it relate to the hundreds of other missing women around the globe?

The Madness” is a modern retelling of “Dracula”, but Kurtagich brings her own brand of flair and passion to the pages. In this version, Jonathan Harkness is a jilted lover, gravely disfigured by a “dog” attack years before. Mina, too, has been traumatized so severely that she suffers from tics and compulsions in order to seek control. Take these two struggling, yet fascinating characters, add some age-old vampires (my favourite) and top it off with a sprinkle of the dangerous power of the patriarchy and you have “The Madness” in all of its glory.

Mina is the protagonist, and we learn, slowly, about who she is and what she went through in her past. But there is also an unidentified (at the beginning, anyway) woman who tells her story of what goes on behind the walls of the nightclub with no name and the strange but beautiful Castle in Wales. There are brief moments of female camaraderie in the darkness, and my heartstrings were definitely pulled.

“Madness” is a gothic horror, with a psychological twist. Vampires have been inundating our fiction for the last few years, but it is rare to come across a vampire story that is so creepy and entertaining and Kurtagich was able to pull it off. I hope to see more from Kurtagich, especially if she is going to continue to put her own spin on classics like “Dracula”, because she absolutely rocked it out of the park.

The Madness by Dawn Kurtagich was put on my radar thanks to #Bookstagram (looking at you @itsallaboutthethrill!) but I didn’t actually know it was a retelling of Dracula until I was done. Look, I know it’s a classic, but I haven’t seen it or read it! I have no idea what the author changed or kept the same, but I know that I loved it and the Welsh folklore woven throughout was fascinating. There is a note about this in the back of the physical copy that wasn’t included in the audiobook, and I definitely recommend making sure you check that out. This was a gothic and atmospheric tale that gave me anxiety while also keeping me glued to the pages.

The audio is narrated by Imogen Church, and I love that Kurtagich mentions she requested her specifically. 😍 I thought she killed the narration for this book, and she made the moments Mina was panicking very realistic. I could feel everything Mina was feeling, and Church was easy to listen to on top of it. The Madness would make a perfect spooky season read, but even if you were just in the mood for a mystery with an otherworldly quality this would fit the bill. I will most definitely be checking out more from this author now!

4 ⭐️ Enjoyed this modern retelling of Dracula. Fast paced and chilling, just what a horror novel should be! Great characters!!!

Set in London and Wales, the story is steeped in Welsh folklore. I love that the characters are named for the characters in Dracula. It took me just a bit to discover it!

Mina Murray is a psychiatrist who left her small village in Wales years ago. She left her mom, boyfriend, best friend and has some strange quirks too! Then a strange illness in a patient and a cry for help from her best friend Lucy, takes Mina back home again. A chilling tale follows with a race to stop the Fampir.

This one had me shaking my head…at myself.

It’s an absolutely fabulous homage to a classic and I missed it for far too long. All of a sudden, it was like the proverbial lightbulb went off over my head. *Ding Ding Ding* and that’s what this is based on.

It was absolutely a me problem.

Even before my personal enlightenment, I loved this. It was so creepy and mysterious. And once I figured out (again, wayyyyy slower than most readers will), I was creeped out and delighted at the same time!

An excellent read!

Are the following fictional names familiar to you: Mina Murray (schoolmistress), Lucy Westenra (victim), Jonathan Harker (lawyer), Dr. John Seward (nice), Arthur Holmwood (aristocrat), Quincy Morris (rich Texan), and Mr. Swales (old guy)? They are the cast of characters of a classic horror novel written over 120 years ago; names that show up in The Madness by Dawn Kurtagich. Having now entered the 21st century, they are quite dissimilar to their namesakes: Mina is a psychiatrist with OCD, Lucy is still a victim, Harker is a farmer, Dr. Seward is a dick, Arthur is rich, Quincy is a female police officer, and Mr. Swales is a dead, old guy.

The themes of violence, sexuality, and the supernatural remain the same. In the modern version, young women are disappearing like clockwork; however, nobody notices. That is, until one of Dr. Mina Murray’s patients at the psychiatric facility she works at—which treats women with trauma—exhibits the same psychological and physical symptoms as her friend, Lucy. When she finds out about other missing women who exhibited the same symptoms before they disappeared, she goes to the police, but they dismiss her the same way her colleague Dr. Seward does: with a hefty dose of misogyny and denigration.

Mina returns to her family home to help Lucy. It has been twelve years since she skipped town without explanation, causing hurt and anger to those who loved her. Now that she has chosen to help her friend and delve into the mystery of the missing women, Mina must confronted the legacy of her abrupt disappearance, and continued absence. Will Mina’s own trauma and OCD hinder (or help) her search for answers? Can she mend her broken relationships, and herself?

With the help of her mother, her long, lost boyfriend (Johnathan Harker), and childhood friend and one-time girlfriend of Lucy (Quincy), Mina eventually works out the ghastly who, what, and why as it
concerns the missing young women. Filled with references to Welsh folklore, myths, and legends, this novel dives into issues of trauma, the violence and commoditization of women, and the power of institutions (men) and money (men).

This was an easy, middling read for me. I don’t know the purpose of borrowing the names of the horror classic. It doesn’t affect the story. Maybe it’s an inside joke with the readers who know who they are. It seemed gimmicky to me. From the way the novel ended, there may be a book two in the offing.

I would like to thank Graydon House Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this novel.

When Mina Murray receives an email from her estranged best friend Lucy, she leaves her psychiatric practice in London and returns to her home in Wales and the people she abruptly left behind years ago.

Teaming with gothic horror, enthralling prose, beautiful and horrific descriptions and with a complex female main character, The Madness is a beautifully written psychological horror that touches upon the effects of trauma and the mistreatment of women by society on a systemic level.

Mina is a complicated character that is initially gripped by her rigid mindset and the compulsions of her OCD, but as she attempts to assist Lucy and unravel the mystery of the illness that has afflicted her and several underprivileged young women, she is forced to confront her trauma and is able to both reconnect with her mother and her former love and develop new relationships with other women who share in her mission.

I also felt that The Madness could be viewed as an examination of the difficulties that women with chronic illnesses face in general, as they sometimes are left to suffer with debilitating symptoms due to a lack research or skepticism regarding their ailments.

The less known about the novel going in the better and there were some twists that I was surprised by. Thank you to NetGalley, Graydon House Books and Dawn Kurtagich for providing access to this excellent ebook.

This was definitely different from my usual go to genres. I don't read too many horror books, but this sounded good. I read a few good reviews on bookstagram that had me intrigued, so I gave it a try. I must say I wasn't disappointed. Perfect book to add to your fall reading list. It did take me a bit to get into it, which I believe was needed to build up the story. It's a pretty crazy story. My suggestion for this one is to go in blind…that's what I did after reading a review that suggested the same. Plenty of creepy surprises throughout. It gives off awesome Gothic vibes that I loved…and the plot left me uneasy. I enjoyed it!

Ok, so the thing is - and don't kill me - I still have yet to read Dracula. So, I did not even realize this was supposed to be a modern retelling of the story. Oops.

Anyway, The Madness follows Dr. Mina Murray who specializes in psychiatric care of women who have experienced trauma. One day, out of the blue, Mina is contacted by her old friend Lucy who she has not spoken to in many years. Lucy is suffering from a mystery ailment that the doctors can't solve and she has resorted to seeking help from her old friend, asking Mina to return to her hometown. Of course, Mina drops everything to see Lucy, and soon finds that Lucy's symptoms align with one of her patients back home, and may be connected to a larger and darker situation involving many missing young girls.

I think this was well-paced, the characters were unique and interesting to follow, and the central plot was compelling. I wish that the small town atmosphere was built out more, providing more lore & background for the reader. There was also a side plot of a second chance romance situation that I did not care for. The story was focused on women helping other women escape powerful and harmful men so I was not at all interested in reading about a boring, no personality man that Mina used to date. In my opinion, it added nothing to the story.

Otherwise, I mostly enjoyed my time with this one. 3.5 stars.

A Dracula retelling but make it feminist? Say less.

This book was weird and creepy and so bingeable! I loved the mixed media thrown through out the story (I.e. text messages, emails, letters, newspapers) and the strong women in this story! I couldn’t put this book down and I thought this story was so unique! Gothic horror done right!
Not to mention the cover and end pages are STUNNING.

(4.8 rounded up) I was really looking forward to reading this after enjoying ‘And the Trees Crept In’ by this author. I’m so glad I ended up reading this.

For those that don’t know, this is a re imagining of Dracula set in modern day London and Wales. In it, we follow Mina Murray as she is pulled back to the life she left behind. Mina receives an email from her friend Lucy asking for help with a mysterious illness she is suffering from. The symptoms seem to be similar to a patient that Mina is currently treating. Mina then tries to find out what is wrong with Lucy and discovers that her illness might be connected to a greater, ancient evil.

So, long story short, I absolutely loved this book. It breathed new life into a story that many are familiar with. However, you don’t really need to know the story of Dracula to enjoy this. I’ve been reading a lot of vampire books lately and the way the author chose to portray vampires still managed to feel interesting and new. That is a feat in itself.
In The Madness, the way the vampires operate in the modern world unnerved me. I love that the author found a way to make vampires frightening again.

This was a layered story that was about more than just vampires, though. This novel touched on themes of abuse, strained mother/ daughter relationships, overcoming trauma, etc.

As much as I loved that the story felt updated, it still kept the essence of the original. By that I mean that I could see how the original characters transformed into the new ones in this novel. I really just want to say how much I appreciate that the author kept true to the characters in the original story. I loved how Mina, Lucy, Johnathan, and Quincy were portrayed. Dr. Seward’s character was well done, although at times he seemed a bit exaggerated. Arthur’s character was not my favorite. I understand that certain changes had to be made to make the story work, though. I think for the most part, all of the changes worked well in the story.

The Madness also managed to surprise me in some places, which I loved. One particular plot point was like a punch in the gut. Very painful but so so well done. I’ll leave the details for readers to discover for themselves. The ending, in my opinion, was just right. I hope that maybe in the future we can revisit these characters, not because the story needs a sequel. Really just because I loved the characters.

This book is for those who love the story of Dracula and want to see a modernized version. Even if you’ve never read the original, I’d recommend this book. This is for anyone who loves stories about perseverance, overcoming trauma, or those that want a feminist take on Dracula. I’m looking forward to reading this author’s backlist and any future books they write.

Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Trade Publishing, Graydon House, and the author for providing me with an ARC for review.

Short and sweet (I hope).
A delightful, Welsh gothic re-imagining of Dracula, in which the women take over. Feminist horror at its finest. A chilling read, oozing dense atmosphere, drenched in spooky Welsh folklore. There are wonderfully flawed, all too human (and not so human) characters, ideally named Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra, Dr. Seward, etc. It’s an absorbing, captivating read that’s hard to put down. Ms. Kurtagich’s adult debut is a winner.

Exquisitely dark, disturbing, and clever as hell! Kurtagich’s hypnotic retelling electrifies and relentlessly propels the reader forward with one cliffhanger after another. If you think you’ve heard this story before, think again. THE MADNESS is a tour de force of feminist horror.

I read this gorgeous contemporary version of the Dracula story from Mina’s POV over Halloween and believe me when I say it was pitch-perfect! Mina finally gets her agency, her voice, and her power. I LOVED this book.

Thank you Netgalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing/Graydon House for this ARC.

The beginning of the book was quite engaging and interesting, with a Mina the likes of which I've never met before in a Dracula-inspired novel (retelling, shall we say). I found the middle of the story to somewhat lag, with some of the character interactions not really going anywhere in so far as the plot was concerned. The last act, however, was a pleasure to read. Not to mention that throughout, Dawn Kurtagich's writing is beautiful--and the folklore that is drawn from kept me interested from the start.

This book was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the main character with all her quirks and idiosyncrasies. The mental hospital ambiance was good and felt real. As did the dialogue and location. I love the trope of a main character coming back home to resolve something from the past. I also enjoyed the diverse plot of characters as well as a bit of the fantastic.
Thank you to Netgally for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

i don't disagree with the people of goodreads all too often but this book was not for me. i found it just to be very not well put together in that the plot jumped from point to point with no actual flow. additionally just a lot of random things were thrown in like text messages, emails, and excerpts from other sources that generally make a book more interesting but in this case were unnecessary and did not really add in anyway. the whole book felt very rushed and jumbled.

WOW! This book was insane. Definitely a go in blind story! At first I didn’t really connect with the main character. But as she developed and her story unfolded I really liked her! I loved all the cryptic lore in this one and there was a turning point where my jaw dropped, I was shocked! I really enjoyed this book and I hope if you pick it up it will shock and entertain you!!!
