The Nine Worlds #1

The Magic of Vanaheim

Rate this book
Håkon is a famed warrior adored by his men, but merely the bastard son of the King of Jotunheim. As a threat to the succession, he’s sent away by his father to kill the ruler of the hostile Vanir.

When he enters the fortress of Saeborg disguised as his sister, supposedly sent to end their enmity through marriage, Håkon is prepared to die if it means taking the enemy ruler with him.

Handsome, cunning, and in possession of seiðr—the powerful battle magic reserved for women in the other realms—Prince Talvinen of Vanaheim is the kind of man feared and despised by the Jötnar. Talvinen has been obsessed with Håkon since he was a child, and he sees through Håkon’s disguise immediately.

Now a prisoner in an enemy realm, Håkon depends on Talvinen to survive and protect his sister. As they face threats both from within the Vanir court and the surrounding realms, Håkon’s loyalties are tested and his darkest desires tempted.

Can he survive, or will the young Vanir Prince be his undoing?

“Oh, Håkon. You still underestimate how obsessed I am with you. When I’m awake, my thoughts always revolve around you. And when I sleep, I dream of you.”

3.5 stars rounded up.

I really enjoyed the main characters in this story, and their relationship dynamic was fantastic. The general concept for the story also intrigued me a lot and the overall vibe and feeling I got was really special. The main idea for the arranged marriage was wild, but it worked, lol.

Unfortunately, the rest of the plot was a little bit all over the place? Especially someplace in the middle, it seemed to lose its direction a bit, or at the very least, it lost me. There was a whole lot of important plot happening at the very end, which often frustrates me because there’s not enough time to wrap things up properly. I was thinking maybe they would get a second book, but it doesn’t seem like it.

Anyway! TLDR; Fantastic concept, lovely characters and a sweet (and hot) relationship dynamic. Some of the plot didn’t work for me.

“Good boy,” Talvinen purred, pulling Håkon back to rest even more cozily against his chest and entangling their legs. “There you go. You’re doing so well. Now close your eyes and breathe.”

“You’re gorgeous in battle, but even prettier like this, panting and shaking under me. Come for me, my beloved husband.”

His first impulse was still to refuse Talvi’s care. He could stand up. He wasn’t that famished. He could take care of himself. But he didn’t have to. Not anymore. He could allow himself to be treated kindly, because he knew Talvi would never use it against him.

"You think I fought well, little one?”
“You won the tournament at the last þing, and you’re going to win again. You’re the best warrior in the Nine Worlds.”

I am officially entering my 'pure-adoration' era. Give me partners who absolutely, unfailingly adore each other, who protect each other and support each other. Give me characters that are 100% invested! From the opening scenes with precocious child-Talvi, to the current timeframe of most of the read, I was totally cast under Talvi's spell. The writing style and characters that author Saga Nansen built are reminiscent of some of my favorite fantasy authors like Megan Derr, etc.

Håkon caught his gaze over the distance separating them. His face showed wide-eyed surprise, but he immediately flagged Talvi as the new threat.
How Talvi adored him.

The story was a well-paced blend of action, spice, and adventure! Given the contents of the plot, this easily could've been a heavier, more angst-ridden read, and I'm really thankful it wasn't! It's set against a backdrop of beautiful Norse mythology, which is kind of a new-to-me area of mythology (but definitely one I'll revisit if I see other books toting the same!). I do kind of wish the glossary had been at the front of the book to help with some of the early-terminology, though often that can weigh the beginning of a book down or feel intimidating - but if you find you need one, refer to the back!

"Well, I could do without your attempts to murder me, but don’t worry, I don’t expect you to make any promises you can’t keep.

I was a little confused at first when the final conflict happened - it felt like it While it does go back and explain the steps that led up to it, I almost wish we had observed those steps in person so the jump didn't feel so sudden!

There was a lot of strength to unexpected side characters, too - Gudrun, Anya. I hope they continue to feature as side characters throughout the series!

Talvi watched him for a long time after; observing his serene features and the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest.
The most perfect being in all the Nine Worlds.

Overall, this darling little book earned its place on my top reads of the year shelf, and I will dearly look forward to seeing what a possible book 2 might give us! We have lots of loose ends in the overall worldbuilding - but I have a suspicion it'll be about the Uncle and his newly purchased thrall... That is, if Talvi and Hakon's story doesn't continue itself in a book 2!

And :o I've just realized there are a few shorts listed under this authors GR page that exist in this same series. Excuse me while I devour them....

I received an advanced readers copy from the author, but my opinions are all my own!

Only 15% in so far, and I'm really, really, really enjoying this book! I was lucky to receive an ARC from this new-to-me author and that can sometimes go sideways if the author doesn't click for you, but this author 100% does and I can't wait to settle in and finish this read :D

Right now, I'm in my Talvi era <3

4.5 stars.

The Magic of Vanaheim is is the first book of the Nine Worlds series.

It is a new author for me, so I will comment that it is well written, the descriptions, both of the characters and landscapes, you immediately get into the story.

Vanaheim and Jotunheim are two rival kingdoms, each has its own way of understanding power, while in Vanaheim magic predominates, in Jotunheim what prevails is the physical and military force.

Talvi, from the kingdom of Vanaheim, meets Hakon from Jotunheim at a meeting of kingdoms and it is immediately clear that in the future they will be together. Talvi is younger than Hakon, but it is not until they are both adults that they meet again. Hakon's father conceives a stratagem to gain power in Talvi's kingdom. That is why Hakon goes to Vanaheim.

I really liked the worldbuilding, it is very well thought out.
It has touches of bdsm.

I will continue reading the series.

4.5 stars. Excellent world building and a gripping writing style. Talvi was a really unusual character and knew what he wanted from a young age - Håkon. Håkon had been badly treated all his life but still became a really impressive warrior. Watching Talvi slowly win his trust and love was beautiful. Part one of what promises to be a really good series, but happily not ending in a cliffhanger. I really look forward to the next.

I have missed this author's writing style. There's something they put in their books I haven't found anywhere else. I'm trying to think of who it reminds me of to give an example to y'all but I can't really, it's this intense, gravitating style I completely adore. The dynamic between the two MCs is always just always so addicting and good.

This one was no different, I loved it from start to finish. It starts out with Håkon taking his sister's place in arranged marriage with Talvinen, their enemy. Håkon disguises himself as a princess which lasts all of two seconds before a very delighted (and gay) Talvi figures it out. Talvi is the adoring husband everyone would want, while also being so powerful no one really stands a chance to challenge him which is super satisfying. Talvi has been in love with Håkon for pretty much his entire life and it manages to be this really touching devotion. He slowly melts Håkon and the two have this incredibly sweet romance together. A few exciting battles to top it off and everything is perfect. I'm not sure if this is a standalone (I think it is?), but I'd gladly read an entire series about these two. So good.

The Magic of Vanaheim is the first book in new The Nine Worlds series. This is the story of Håkon a wonderful fighter but the illegitimate son of the king and Talvinen a prince from another country. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It has everything I could want in a great story, steam, action, and a great plot. I really fell in love with Talvi from the start. This was just a great story. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

As always, Saga Nansen creates a vivid world—this one inspired by Norse myth—in The Magic of Vanaheim. This book offers a wonderful insight into Norse mythology; if you're a history nerd like me, that means an entry into a fascinating research rabbit hole, but the book is still a delight even if you're only there for the fantasy and/or romance. (There's also a helpful glossary at the back of the book, but the story is easily understandable without looking anything up.)

The characters are rich and believable, many drawn from Norse myth but also individual and personal in a way that makes famous mythical beings much more real and intimate (and in my opinion, more interesting). It's impossible not to root for the main characters. Talvi is a delight—both cheeky and amusing and impressively powerful—and Håkon is an endearing grumpy/gruff yet sympathetic figure (and has an unexpected character arc that's one of the most interesting parts of the story). The main focus is definitely on Håkon and Talvi, who often seem to be in their own little world—the other characters mostly seem to be there to further Håkon and Talvi's story along and don’t have a lot of development themselves. That said, the other characters add extra depth and humor to the story, and it doesn't end up feeling like something is missing.

Based on the first few chapters, the dynamic between the main characters is somewhat unexpected—and potentially unrealistic—but somehow it works, and it keeps the story from being too obvious or cliché. Though the mythology background and an outside antagonist/struggle are present, the focus of the book is definitely that dynamic between Håkon and Talvi. The main story is really the growing relationship between them and Håkon's struggle to accept himself (though playing out in a much less cheesy way than I just put it).

And what about likely the most important aspect for many readers: the romance? To be honest, I was a bit surprised when I first read one of Saga’s books and liked it (at least the romance aspect), because I’m not usually a fan of d/s elements. But the relationships in the books are so well done and the myth and world building so beautiful that I now immediately read her books whenever a new one comes out—and always enjoy it. This book is no exception to that. The interplay between the main characters is both charming and funny at times, a sweet yet spicy romance with d/s undertones. I’d say it’s spicy enough to satisfy those who like kinkier romances but also subtle enough to still be enjoyable for those (like me) who aren't as into the d/s dynamic or hardcore kink. The romance happens a bit quickly considering Håkon is supposed to hate Talvi, but this plays alongside Håkon's own personal journey of shame and self-acceptance (and honestly, satisfies impatient readers like me).

Overall, The Magic of Vanaheim is both a beautiful (and spicy) love story and a rich weaving of Norse myth and original world building. Even expecting and wanting a romance, I found myself just as ensnared and captivated by the world itself (though never fear, there's plenty of romance and spice!). Unsurprising for one of Saga Nansen's books, I find myself returning to reread scenes and getting sucked back into the story. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

Saga Nansen takes Norse mythology and spins a bad-a fantasy. The tale of the Nine Worlds could fit into the Poetic Edda with no problem.
Håkon Bloodaxe is the illegitimate son of Bergelmir of Jotunheim. In order to save his younger half-sibling Anya from a political marriage he takes her place. His father gives him an additional order. Assassinate the King of Vanaheim. Talvinen, youngest child of Queens Vellamo and Ahti, has ruled Vanaheim since the disappearance of his mothers and brother. When he was eight or nine, he approached Håkon after a tourney, gave him his ring and asked him to marry him. As an adult, he sees through Håkon's disguise and marries the man he loves. By Vanaheim law, Håkon is the rightful heir of Jotunheim.
Håkon grew up in the viper's nest of Jotunheim's court. As the 'natural' son of the king, he has no power and any weakness can be held against him. He's a little appalled at how careless his new husband is, allowing an enemy to carry a blade and to be alone with him. Talvi is a vala, a sorcerer. He's confident in his powers, maybe a tad too comfortable. At least in Håkon's opinion.
Talvi's patience never wavers. He's kind to his husband, treats him with gentle respect. Håkon's suspicions slowly get laid to rest.
It's enemies to lovers. With swordplay and magic. An evil sorceress and a few betrayals. The excitement and tension ratch up page after page. The worldbuilding is top notch. Thyra and Godrun are very supportive secondaries.
The book has a very satisfying ending. But left lots of arcs for more books. Is Håkon Bergilmur's son or maybe... Thrym's? And most importantly, will Uncle Njord and his thrall get their own story?
A highly recommended read. It's one where I can't wait to have the entire series/trilogy, so that I can read it completely. But I really don't want the fun to end.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.

Beautifully written Viking love story

I am obsessed with Saga's writing. She conjours up magic and mystical worlds and characters who fit perfectly in those locations. Her writing style is lyrical and very descriptive without being flowery. It fits both her unforgiving locations and her strong characters who are secretly (or not so secretly) full of heart.
I saved the free short stories, The Sacrifice and Erling, to read immediately before this and they certainly whetted my appetite for The Nine Worlds and I would love to see more of the two protagonists.
The Magic of Vanaheim completely captivated me from the very beginning, with the older Håkon meeting the younger Talvi at the beginning of the book. I spent too long reading into the night and couldn't wait to pick it up again the next day.
Håkon was such a lost soul, hidden deep behind his outward fierce warrior who was feared by all, and he needed love more than most. I wanted, no, needed to wrap him up in a big hug all the way through, and tell him that everything would be all right if he could just let himself believe in what was in front of him.
Talvi was the opposite of Håkon, absolutely certain of his path and what and who he wanted. He was powerful with his magic and with his good heart, but threaten what was his and all bets were off. Håkon was his. Full stop. I loved how gentle Talvi was with his man, his precious love, his everything.
I don't know whose book is next but if it's Talvi's uncle and the man Saga has hinted at here, I would be very happy. I would also be over the moon if Talvi and Håkon appeared in the rest of the series, or even got another book of their own.
If you haven't read the Northbound series, including the free novella Northern Lights, you should. It's just as fabulous, in a more modern setting but still with all the magic and mystery, and the baddies too, of course.
All the freebies are available on Saga's website, https://www.saga-nansen.com.

Earlier this year I wasn’t familiar with Saga Nansen, but then I devoured her Northbound series and was hooked! So I jumped at the chance to read The Magic of Vanaheim, the start of her new Nine Worlds series.
How could I resist? A book infused with Norse mythology, gay Vikings, and magic? Yes, please!
After besting his brother at a tournament, Hakon, warrior and bastard son of the King of Jotunheim is proposed to by a young child with startling green eyes. Unnerved, he accepts, not knowing what he’s set in motion.
Years later he will enter enemy territory disguised as his sister - who is supposed to marry the Prince Rune. Who he is supposed to kill.
The smaller Talvinen sees through his disguise and insists they marry anyway.
The world Hakon enters is new and not at all what he expected.
I adored both MCs and enjoyed seeing Hakon confused and frustrated by Talvinen. Talvi gets the man he proposed to as a child, but intends to woo him, showing him kindness is not weakness, and you don’t need to be cruel to lead. And Hakon, he’s finding himself drawn to the younger man and dreaming of being dominated by him.
Talvinen is a world class edger, and by they finally unite in a fertility ritual it’s visceral and seering and hot as hell.
I loved watching small but mighty Talvinen slowly break down Hakon’s defenses and show him the truth of things he’s been told growing up. Watching their trust and adoration grow was delicious. (And they sizzle together!)
“You kept my ring.” Swoon.
There’s court intrigue, betrayal, and a well-deserved comeuppance.
The secondary cast is just as amazing, including Hakon’s sister, who should not be underestimated.
The writing and world building is so vivid! I can’t wait to see where this series goes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book brought a refreshing touch to the MM fantasy genre. The Nordic theme — which I absolutely love and seems to be a passion of the author as well — was one of the highlights of the story. The rich world-building made me feel like I was truly traveling and diving deep into this fantastic universe.

The characters are captivating and full of potential. I especially connected with the main couple, whose chemistry is undeniable. I was completely drawn into the dynamic between Talvi and Hakon — the way Talvi is obsessed with and deeply in love with Hakon really won me over.

Up until the halfway point, the story was a solid five-star read for me. However, from the middle to the end, the narrative lost some of its strength. The sudden introduction of the brother subplot and everything that followed felt rushed and underdeveloped. Some characters lacked depth, and I wish there had been more foreshadowing or subtle hints that could’ve led to those later developments. It would’ve been great if the author had planted clearer seeds for a possible continuation.

Unfortunately, the ending felt rushed and not fully fleshed out. Even so, I can’t deny how much I loved this story. It has a strong foundation, an engaging romance, and a world full of potential waiting to be explored. I was completely hooked, and despite its flaws, I finished the book with a warm heart and a head full of possibilities.

4.5 stars. The author created an amazing world. The story of Håkon and Talvin is just great.

Hákon is a great warrior but only the king’s bastard son. One day he got approached by a young boy who asked Hákon to marry him when he’s an adult. It was more a promise.
Years and years later Hákon got caught in another kingdom. His own fault, he was disguised as his sister, who would marry the prince of Vanaheim. Hákon wanted to kill the prince. The prince is no one else but the boy who promised to marry him.

Talvinen is still smitten with Hákon, he admired him when he was a little boy, and now his feelings are of a different kind.
He wants Hákon as his husband and lover. Hákon still wants to kill his gentle husband who seems to be so fond of him, but can he? Spoiler: no! He can’t, he’s confused, and his feelings for Talvinen are getting stronger.
Watching Talvinen and Hákon getting closer and getting hot was everything!

Intrigued? Good, because the story is immensely captivating! It’s a must-read for the lovers of fantasy stories.
The actions are stunning, the characters wonderfully crafted, and the scenery is just amazing!
Overall it was an entertaining well written and well-thought-out story!

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have been reading Saga’s stories for a long time and I really wanted to read this book. I was very excited when I had heard about the release.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. As usual I don’t want to write any spoilers just some pros and cons…

Pros:
+ First of all the cover is beautiful. One of my favorites, I really love it.
++ It’s an enemies to lovers story in a fantasy world, with an arranged marriage and with the well-known ‘who is also the bride?’ misunderstanding. However it isn't my favorite trope, Saga managed to surprise me, she wrote it so well that I didn’t want to stop reading.
+++ I loved both the main characters and the others too
+ Talvi (one of the MC) is a sorcerer,/wizard and a knight in shining armor :)
+ Håkon (the other MC) is a warrior; I always wanted to hug him after I read his inners thoughts

Cons:
English is not my first language but I had to struggle with dictionary of Norse mythology in this book, too. Sometimes these words really confused me, so this is now 4 stars.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity!

I truly enjoyed this whole book. Gay Vikings who can do magic?!? Immediately YES. The dynamic between Häkon and Talvinen is so hot.Poor Häkon is in over his head off the rip.

He is not expecting such power from a man that is so much younger and smaller in stature. The last thing he expects is his desire to submit.

Talvinen has been infatuated with Häkon since he was a boy and he is determined to show the warrior just how much he desires to make him happy. Talvi is so lovely and patient with Häkon. It made my heart all gooey.

Not everyone in The Nine Worlds is happy with their union. There is danger everywhere.

They don't know who they can trust, but they must learn to trust one another if they plan to bring peace and prosperity to their realms.

This is just the first book in The Nine Worlds Series and I am already hooked. I want to know everything. I cannot wait to read them all!!

You can look forward to:
• Vikings meets Thor
• Enemies/ idiots to lovers
* Touch him and literally
• Fast pace
• High heat
• Age gap / younger top
• Arranged marriage
• Norse Mythology
• D/s undertones
• HEA

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarain, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Usually, I rehash the blurb, not gonna here, cos I just wanna jump straight in!

I LOVED this book!

What I loved most was how patient Talvi was with Hakon (I'm sorry, my keyboard won't do the special characters!) Talvi loved Hakon since he was a child, and now he had the frost warrior in his bed, he wasn't letting him go. Talvi waited, and watched, as Hakon settled into his new life. Waited while he found his footing, and realised that all those things his father said to him, were a lie. Hakon wasn't useless, or a waste of space! He was to be King with Talvi, he just needed to see that fact himself, before Hakon could give himself fully to Talvi.

I could see that betrayal coming a long way off, and while it's good to be proven right, it's still mighty painful for Talvi to realise where the threat really was.

I did NOT see the death of Hakon's father coming from where that did! But I think it was right it came from that person, rather than Hakon.

I loved all the Viking and Norse references. Some were recognisable, some not so. But those not so ones, were what really made this book.

And now, I have questions! Where is Talvi's brother? And his mother's? Will Hakon's sister get a story? But the biggest question is just what is going on with Talvi's uncle and the thrall??

I hope these are answered in future books! I look forward to getting my hands on them!

Saga Nansen is relatively new to the scene, but they have jumped in and landed with a mighty splash in this genre, please keep them coming!

I honestly absolutely adored this. I'm a decent chunk Norwegian and have always loved learning about Norwegian mythology. This really satiated that hunger. I thought the story was well written and can't wait for it to continue! I received the book as an ARC and I'm oh so happy I did. Both Hakon and Talvi are amazing and cute characters and I adore the age difference trope. I can't wait to see how much it can be expanded! Can't wait to read more.

Edit: I wanted to add a bit more information! Also the Bonus Chapter scene was just delightful. This has both story and smut. I appreciate that it took some time to get to the actual sex. The foreplay was amazing. I love Talvi... The idea of the younger top is always fun to me. I appreciate how powerful he is. Like Hakon can clearly take care of himself buuuuutttt... I appreciate that it was also mostly low on angst. But that's a personal thing for me.

Overall though, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see how it continues going forward! I want to see what happens with Talvi's mom's and whatever else is to come 🖤 I love Hakon. I'm so excited 🖤

This one was a bit hard for me to rate/review. On one hand, it caught my attention from the first page. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. The plot was well thought out, I liked both the main characters, and there was a good balance between action, romance and steam. I expected at least a bit of a dubcon situation, which we really didn't get. Honestly, it was a bit steamier than I expected, and I loved the touch of D/s play.

There was also a ton of detail and beautiful descriptions in the book. Unfortunately in this case, detail did not equal world-building. IDK if reading the novellas would have helped with that or not, but I was a little bit lost when it came to all the worlds and people.

Overall, this was a great book, it was just missing some details for the reader to be more immersed in the story.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review

I was enthralled by this blend of Norse myth and the author's imagination to create a wholly convincing world for this action-packed swords and sorcery tale.

The wider worldbuilding was faultless, with magic infused into a richly detailed Viking setting, along with its customs and people, warriors and magicians. But what caught my heart was the story within, about loyalty, love and trust.

Haken is a mighty warrior, but he's also a despised son of his royal father, overlooked and unappreciated. Talvi is the stuff of magical legend, but he's unfailingly kind, capable of unstinting love and endless patience. I thoroughly enjoyed how these two came together amid the plots, battles and quests to find their own bit of lasting peace. Absolutely glorious!

It started with the character performing in a ring with his brother and he won the match that had his brother wound up. Then a young boy came up to him from his backside and he had no feeling that the boy was there until the boy spoke.
Well that started a whole story by itself and the characters were different in each chapter of the book. The next time the boy saw him was when he was a man and defending his keep, Hakon knew he was famed for his control but he learned of his abilikty to control other wordly things.
The story went interstingly on and it ended with the two of them, Talvi & Hakon living a beatiful life.
It is a good read and you will love it.

My kind of 'enemies'-to-lovers. Talvi was quite a character - powerful (a bit OP actually) and passioned, a driving force behind the whole plot. The romance was definitely to my taste and the Nine Realms are quite an intriguing place to visit. There was also plenty of action. I must say the book didn't overtake me as much as I expected, as if something was missing to truly bring me with it, to sweep me off my feet but it's a gay fantasy with magic and mythology - definitely recommend. I know romantasy is the new black and for me, this is what the genre should look like. It's also a first book in a series and I think I know what couple to look forward to next.

This is definitely my favorite book from Saga!

I'm always cautious with the arranged marriage trope bc of the dub-con implications but Saga pulled it off so well that I never felt uncomfortable. Håkon might end up being "captive", but Talvi never treats him that way, giving him options left and right. So no wonder Håkon falls ass first (quite literally 😂) in love in no time. Watching him go from appalled to intrigued to simping on Talvi like nobody's business had me laughing several times.

Talvi being the ultimate protector and supporter had me almost jealous (I want someone like that too, pretty please). The fact that he's been in love with Håkon since he was a child (Talvi, not Håkon lol) just made everything so much better.

And I LOVED the Merthur vibes of their relationship 🥰

As an avid fan of anything with Norse mythology in it, you can bet your bottom dollar that I snatched up this story. Saga carefully selected the elements from lore that suited Talvi and Håkon’s tale, and I adored reading the way they were adapted, but also how novel and unique aspects were creativity added to produce The Magic of Vanaheim - and magic it is!

The plot follows Håkon, a Jotunn warrior and illegitimate son of the king of Jotunheim, and Talvi - magic wielder and heir to Vanaheim - as they embark on a relationship despite differences in cultural norms between their two lands.

I expected a little bit more from the whole story... More powerful enemies (to lovers), more feisty characters (they were boring as hell), meanwhile, everything was predictable, polite, proper and by the book. None of this should've been assosciated with Scandinavian mythology, don't you think? And although the worldbuilding was interesting, it felt underdeveloped. Such stories should be more filthy, unpredictable, exciting, and with a little more edge. And hopefully the author will expand on that in the next parts of this series.

Hakon is the illegitimate son of the ruler of his country and will never be King. Pretending to be his sister, sent to marry an enemy Prince Talvi in an alliance, he instead intends to relieve Talvi of his life. But Talvi has wanted Hakon since he was a boy and intends to marry him instead. Hakon is shocked and astonished and strongly attracted to Talvi. Talvi is younger, patient and loving and the sorcery aspects are fascinating. I enjoyed this tale of bravery, cunning and treachery with its origins in Norse culture.

I was a little hesitant to start this book - I wasn’t sure how to pronounce some of the names and that often makes it harder for me to get absorbed in the story. I shouldn’t have worried! The story was immediately compelling and I could not put it down once I started! I fell in love with Hakon and Tavlin, and would read a thousand books set in their world if only so I could explore this world a little more. 100% recommend!

I received a copy for review and am leaving my thoughts voluntarily.

This is my 1st book by this author and I quite enjoyed it. I loved the dynamic between the MC's with Talvi being the enforcer in their relationship although smaller. Some part of me thinks Talvi's obsession & crush over Hakon is a bit creepy but for some reason I found it charming. First half of the book was extremely well done, second felt a bit rushed. Some things jumped from one chapter to another, the take down of Hak's father was anticlimatic and there were a lot of loose ends like Talvi's friend that betrayed them. Overall, I liked it.

The synopsis made this out to be more than just a smutty romantasy. But, it's on me for continuing to read after I realized my mistake very early on which is why I'm giving it a generous three star rating. Not for me, but I can understand the appeal. Like, I swear I've read au fanfics exactly like this lol

Two stars for me if I'm being honest, but on the plus side it was well written and third person pov which is devastatingly rare in this genre!

This fantasy world totally pulls you in! Just like Hakon could not resist Talvi, even though he thought he should, I could not put this book down. Talvi is so confident and sure of himself and Hakon while being caring that Hakon is falling before he even realizes Talvi is everything he needs. Lots of overarching questions left unanswered so I can't wait for the next one.

The story is written beautifully. The chemistry between these two is blazing hot. The dynamic is unusual, but works like a charm. The characters are strong, with their own voice, and you fall in love with them the more you read about their journey. I love the book, and can't wait to see what is coming next.

This book made me feel all happy and warm!

Hakon was absolutely adorable and Talvi treated him so lovingly. I'm glad they got their happily ever after!

There are still some loose ends, which will hopefully be tied up in the next installments. I hope book 2 will be about the uncle and his thrall. And I want to know what will happen to the sister. I hope she gets a novel too.
