I needed to have information on Hilaire Belloc, they don't mention him at school in my Nation, so I only had the prefaces of some books about him, and I was very willing to learn more. I can say I was very satisfied, it's one of those books you always have as soon as possible. I don't have much time, anyway after reading it I needed more ;) And on the Internet now I'm trying to understand the best I can the very interesting thinker's point of views. I agree the use of the word "chesterbelloc"can cause confusion, and doesn't help to give to the both of them the merit they deserve.
The only defect in this biography is that it assumes that the reader is intimately aware of the creature known as Chesterbelloc, so his relationship with Chesterton is barely mentioned, beyond their meeting, and Chesterton's death.
An absolute slog, but probably that says more about me than the book. Some very interesting moments and quotes but lots that required an in depth knowledge of eg political history that I just didn’t have.
Absolutely indispensable for anyone who loves Hilaire Belloc and filled with insight. Yet at times slightly condescending. The definitive biography of the great man has yet to appear.
