Zero Excuses: A Small Town Fourth of July Romance by Cecelia Conway is a feel-good novella (less than 50 pages) romance that immerses readers in the spirit of independence and the magic of a new relationship. Set against the backdrop of a Fourth of July celebration, this short story book brings the warmth of summer, the spark of romance, and the complexities of personal growth all together in a delightful package.

The story centers around two main characters, Ben and Daniel, who had a steamy one-night stand that’s turned into long distance longing. Their chemistry is undeniable, but they each have their own baggage to work through before they can truly open their hearts to one another.

Cecelia Conway’s writing shines in the way she captures the small-town atmosphere—rich with tradition, community spirit, and the type of close-knit relationships that feel authentic and comforting. The setting of the Fourth of July holiday adds a sense of festivity and nostalgia, making Ben and Daniel’s romance feel even more special as fireworks light up the sky and the town comes together in celebration.

Ben and Daniel’s journey toward understanding and forgiveness feels real and relatable. The way they navigate their past and their individual struggles adds a layer of complexity to the otherwise lighthearted romance, making their reunion even more satisfying.

The pacing of the novel is fast! There are moments that will make you laugh out loud and others that may bring a tear to your eye, creating a well-rounded reading experience.

If you’re looking for a romance that is both uplifting and touching, with a healthy dose of charm and fireworks (literal and figurative), then Zero Excuses is a must-read. Cecelia Conway has crafted a perfect novella, filled with heart, hope, and the promise that sometimes, a brief encounter can lead to a happy ending.

Damn Daniel! This quick epilogue to a beautiful love story really closes the story on Door County.

Ben is such a shy lovable dude who makes me want to squeeze his cheeks and tell him to stop thinking so much. Let your crush be known!!!

Honestly prefect portrayal of some couple-not-couples I know. It’s a sweet time getting in the heads of the men (who more often than not act like teenage boys) and in the end there really are zero excuses.

Thank you for tying up these loose ends Cecilia, always a great time reading your works!
