A most effective thriller, which takes the reader into contemporary China. The story shows how economic dynamism has remade society - in some ways - and how the stoic peasantry are in many ways unchanging. The story line is mysterious and intriguing, as missing children and dark conspiracies menace the ordered lives of Chinese families.
