A heartbroken king. A jilted bride. A star-crossed wedding.
Idonea knows the only thing her human blood is good for is its role in strengthening the Star Elves when the comet returns every two hundred and fifty years. Her whole life has been meant for the moment she marries Olaug and finally gets it right, and not even the king can stop her perfect marriage.
The day Idonea was chosen to be part of the Cometa Couple, King Nyrunn was condemned to watching the love of his life spend the rest of hers in the arms of someone else. And he is powerless to stop it.
But when the fateful wedding day arrives, the chosen groom is nowhere to be found. If they don’t have a Cometa Couple, the kingdom’s magic will weaken and it will be their extinction.
If Nyrunn steps in, he saves his people and marries the love of his life, but what will he do when he discovers he’s not the love of hers?
When her husband is the king she fears and despises, will Idonea be able to give him her scarred heart, or will she spend the rest of their lives longing for a husband she never had?
Ties of Starlight is book 2 in Tethered Hearts, a multi-author series of no spice fantasy romances. Each standalone story features a magical bond that forces the couple to discover how much they’re willing to sacrifice for the sake of love.
Celeste Baxendell has always read anything she could get her hands on, but once she read her first fantasy novel, she was hooked and hasn’t looked back since.
Her love of magic, adventure, and romance hasn’t waned with age, and she endeavors to write nail-biting stories with compelling, complex characters, and finding light in dark times.
She is incredibly blessed to spend her time writing from her favorite chair with her legs curled up under her as she fights the southern heat. When she isn’t writing, she’s either reading, drawing, or sewing, in that order, and most likely thinking about writing as she does.
Unprofessional, fangirling review: 📢 CALLING ALL FANTASY GIRLIES
AHHH! This book just blew my mind a bit?!
It was so outside of my comfort zone with the whole elf/half-elf thing but I decided to read it anyway and 🫢😮🫢😮🫢😮 I was more invested than a business man on Wall Street 🤯
Okay, okay, okay: my pitch for the book: Young elf king loves the half-human librarian girl. She doesn’t know and thinks he is mean to her. So “it’s always been you” trope in his POV and “enemies to more” trope in her POV—the difference I can’t—and then she’s chosen to be the maiden for the big comet bride thingymajig that’s important for their people and their powers. ☄️ He is not the groom and is devastated. She is not affected?? The TWISTS! The groom-to-be is a Bonafide Loser™️ and skips out on the wedding. So Mr.YoungElfKingInLoveWithHer has to take his place. 😳🫢🤭🤫
BUT YALL! THE TWISTS AND REVEALS!
I rarely stay up past 1am anymore but made it to 3 because of this book and didn’t want to do anything else today besides reading this book. It reminded me a lot of a bunch of Korean comics I’ve read and I’m ordering my copy ASAP.
No fade to black scenes either despite the arranged marriages plotline!! Mentions of cheating and infidelity, going to have my content notes up on here later today.
It’s like, *fantasy* fantasy, in my opinion but I was very impressed by it and all the details of the world!
A little more professional thoughts: First note: this cover ain’t it. The MMC isn’t right in my opinion. It's nice, but not how I picture Nyrunn.
I read another book by this author (“The Wicked Prince”) and really enjoyed it (and how clean that arranged marriage/marriage of convenience plot was), so despite not being a big fan of elves/half-elves plotlines (and not being a fan at all of the arranged marriage/marriage of convenience), I was curious about trying this one.
Honestly, I’m not one for violence but I was fully in agreement with Nyrunn about executing Olaug after reading the harsh letter he wrote. Go for it, young elf king, I’ll prepare the popcorn.
Listen, Idonea views him as an enemy, Nyrunn views her as the love of his life that he can’t have. It gets messy because of this, but I was ridiculously invested like it was a reality TV show. He makes some poor decisions and lies for the sake of getting to marry her. Perhaps that ought to be a red flag, but I’ll call it a faded red one because he realized pretty quick that his reasons were selfish and manipulative towards the outcome he wanted. He has it so bad for her, and is yet an idiot at the same time, so I was reading part of this book with one eye closed and grimacing because yikers, bud 😬 this isn’t going to go as you planned.
It was like a bunch of Manhwas (Korean comics) I’ve read over the years in a lot of ~spoilery~ ways. I was stunned about a certain revelation about Idonea's past and all it entailed. I’ve seen other reviewers mention the spoiler and while I have it below in a spoiler section with content notes, I don’t really want to share about it here because the blurb on the backcover doesn’t say anything about it. Let me say that I don’t believe in what it is (as in it being a real thing), but I admit to enjoying it as a fantasy plot because it always heightens the angst and drama in a way that most other plot devices can’t. This is definitely fantasy fantasy and was outside of my comfort zone, in different ways, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
I really want to say a lot more, but because of that spoiler being such a huge part of the plot, I don’t feel like I really can—but it definitely could be a deal-breaker for some and I can fully understand why! I have more details on that below, but I’ll do a one word spoiler here: .
I wanted so and to finish this book in one go, but I chose to be somewhat responsible (okay, 20% responsible) and put down the book at 60% at 3 in the morning. (I said somewhat responsible, quit looking at me like that. 🤨)
Please know that I had a ton of emotions while reading this book—approximately every single one possible, probably. I might have found myself slightly annoyed with the main characters every once in a while, but by the next chapter they were winning me over again. The author really did a fantastic job describing their emotions and what they were thinking as different things were revealed. I always love a MMC who is in love with the FMC, but Nyrunn and Idonea were different as well from that usual trope because of secrets and past events affecting how they are viewing the other.
There were a few things here and there I didn’t care for, like the mention of a witch (which was leaning positive at first and ends maybe slightly more negative by the end if you read into it), but I do really truly appreciate that there were no fade-to-black scenes at all. The fact this author has written two marriage of convenience books are neither have that kind of scene makes me incredibly interested in reading her other books and I definitely plan to soon.
Main Content- In this fantasy world there are different types of elves (Star Elves, Moon Elves, Night Elves, Sun Elves, etc.) and they all get their power from their namesake, so Nyrunn and his people are Star Elves and gather their power from the stars; However, the Star Elves have been weakening after the last 250 years and need to do the traditional “Cometa Couple” ceremony where an elf man and a woman who has at least some human blood are married and do a bunch of traditional things before going into a pool of water under a special comet which will strengthen the whole race’s powers; The couple are bonded in the first ceremony to be able to feel the other’s emotions (which is very strong and Idonea tries to create a wall to block Nyrunn from feeling her emotions and her his emotions; He is able to send comforting emotions to her to less her anxiety) and also have markings are their arms that glow; The Star Elves are able to do a bit of magic-like things like lightening their path with a hand-held star or throwing a star in an attack (healers are also able to healing someone’s injuries by exposing them and the patient to starlight); The Constella (who is the official in charge of the ceremonies of the Cometa Couple) has magic that he uses to bond the couple together (which also creates patterns/lights on their arms); Both Idonea and Nyrunn have magic, but it isn’t shown or mentioned much.
‘Thank Gytha’ is said once (who was the human witch in the first couple) and someone else exclaims ‘Thank the heavens!’.
Mentions of witches (particularly the first human woman of the original Cometa Couple was a powerful witch and how she was kidnapped for her magic) & a witch kingdom (no information is given about them); Mentions of some using Sun Elf blood for their weapons (the people who do this are called barbaric and it’s looked upon as wrong); Mentions of feeling haunted & ghosts (*Spoiler* ); Mentions of soulmates; A couple mentions of fate; A mention of praying (but not towards Whom).
*Spoilers, but revealed about 50 pages in and important to the rest of the plot* .
No language stronger than ‘heavens above’, ‘heavens’, ‘stars’, and ’stupid’; ‘Damning’ is used as an adjective for condemning evidence; Some Eye rolling & Sarcasm.
Killing someone in self-defense (and seeing others killed in a fight), Fighting, Being attacked, Being stabbed and shot at with arrows, Major Pain, Major Injuries, Blood/Bleeding, Passing out, & Remembering all of it (up to a handful of sentences); Idonea has a few moments of self-harm (scratching her birthmark) when in distress (which Nyrunn notes and tries to stop).
Nyrunn thinks about harming an elf or anyone who talks badly about Idonea & does punch someone a couple times.
Idonea is slightly obsessed with being perfect as she thinks once she achieves perfection, she will be able to live a happy life (*Spoiler* ); Idonea believes that Nyrunn has been mocking and teasing her for years, when he actually likes her and has been trying to keep his feelings from being known to others to be able to protect her (he always thought she understood what he was doing and is stunned to learn she thought he was mocking her); Nyrunn lies about his feelings for Idonea and motivations for marrying her (and lies by omission to get her to the altar which he tries not to feel guilt for the selfishness of his reasoning); Idonea believes Nyrunn and others are repulsed by her human-blood and appearance.
Nyrunn is tempted to “abuse the castle’s caskets” of wine like his father did, but doesn’t as he then runs the risk of becoming a wretched and miserable creature like his father was.
A horse is shot with an arrow and dies during a fight/battle (the horse being in pain and the cries are mentioned).
Many mentions of deaths, major pain, injuries, blood/bleeding, being killed/stabbed, being poisoned, drownings, kidnappings, & grief (up to a few sentences); Mentions of a murder & one of the Cometa Couples being said to have killed the other half (*Spoiler* *Major Spoilers* ); Mentions of possible wars & fights; Mentions of nightmares of awful events and pain; Mentions of violence & some elves believing those with human-blood are violent because of it and can snap at little provoking; Mentions of drinking, wine, & a tavern; Mentions of lies, lying, & liars; mo manipulation; Mentions of hatred; Mentions of jealousy; Mentions of prejudice towards those with human-blood (including Nyrunn’s family members being vocally against them and her thinking everyone is repulsed by her); A few mentions of a human-elf being “put down” (killed) for everyone’s safety.
4 hand/palm kisses, 1 cheek kiss, 2 forehead kisses, 1 kiss on her shoulder, 6 kisses lasting a sentence each, 1 kiss lasting a couple sentences, 2 kisses lasting a few sentences each, Wanting to kiss (up to a couple sentences).
Touches, Embraces, Being held, Dancing, Hand holding, Shivers, Warmth, Nearness, Smelling, Noticing, & Staring (up to a few sentences); Wanting to touch & embrace (up to a few sentences); Blushes; Jealousy.
Nyrunn and Idonea stumble and fall into a bed together, but she pushes him away quickly (not a romantic scene); When changing in their room/tent, Nyrunn and Idonea turn from each other to give privacy; Nyrunn helps undo Idonea’s hair once; A bit later, Nyrunn walks in on her changing and while his instinct is to look away, he doesn’t because she was covered; Later, Nyrunn helps Idonea out of her dress when she is in distress and leaves her in her shift (not a scene with sexual tension); Idonea feels embarrassed that Nyrunn sees her without a blouse when injured and covers herself with a blanket; When Nyrunn comes out of their tent disheveled (because of sleeping on the floor), he warns no one to comment about it (as they imagine more happened with their snickering and whistles).
Idonea wakes up in Nyrunn’s arms a few times (either comforting her or holding her after being injured; She feels his warm and safety); Nyrunn and Idonea do not share a bed for about 70% of the book (later they do and wake up near the other or cuddling, but nothing sexual happened in the night); Idonea offers for her to disappear so Nyrunn can marry someone else since they haven’t consummated the marriage and he says he would be an adulterer regardless.
The groom-to-be leaves a letter saying that he can’t stomach being married to Idonea or suffer having an heir with her and finds her appearance repulsive; Besides rumors of that elf having scandalous trysts and also being caught red-handed, a rumor goes around that Idonea had a secret lover and has “loose skirts”; Idonea recalls seeing her groom-to-be with a woman on his lap (said that his shirt was loose and her skirt being above her knees and the woman saying that nothing’s “really happened”); Idonea wonders what she did to cause the man to cheat on her.
*Spoilers* .
Mentions of cheating, infidelity/dalliances, being unfaithful (in relationships and in marriages), & a man being seen in either compromising situations with a woman or in another woman’s bed (no details besides his shirt being loose or a woman touching under his shirt); Mentions of kisses & kissing; Mentions of jealousy; A few mentions of wedding nights (and nothing happening between a couple); A few mentions of desire; A mention of someone being seduced; A mention of girls with human blood getting pregnant easier than full-blooded elves; A mention of rumors about a pregnancy (gossip); A mention of mooning over someone; A mention of elf servants giving Idonea’s figure disapproving looks when helping her bathe.
Where do I start? I went in expecting a sweet elven romantacy and walked away in tears. Never have I read a more real personalization of myself anywhere. Sure, I’m not an elf who winds up married to the king against her wishes, nor have I lived multiple lives, but Idonea was, like myself, on that unending loop where everything is your own fault. Everything bad that happens is deserved and to be expected. That you Just. Aren’t. Good. Enough.
She even says the same phrase I have often uttered myself, which was not only a shock, but I find myself rethinking my use of it, because I realize it is long past time I stop allowing my abusive past to define myself.
Idonea is beautifully written and her view of the world around her is genuine. You want to wrap her up in your arms, fight off her demons for her and shelter her from further harm, but anyone with a traumatic backstory knows that we who were stuck in that cycle (thanks Celeste for the beautiful dedication to us all) have to realize our own self worth rather than have it handed to us.
Also, I really enjoyed the building tension between two secondary characters, both of whom also beautifully written. As for our dumbass runaway fiancé- wow, we all know jerks like this guy are out there, but what a self-centered piece of garbage. And to the deliberately cruel side cast- yeah, you all exist as well. All I want to say there is what the hell is wrong with people like you?
Ms Baxendell understands her characters all too well and wields them skillfully here.
Nyrunn, recently crowned as king of the Star Elves, has been in love with Idonea for years, but has not been able to do more than tease and flirt subtly while his cruel father was alive. Idonea’s half-human background makes her less in many elves’ eyes, but not Nyrunn’s- in fact he loves her every perceived flaw.
The trouble is that she has already been betrothed to another as part of a cyclical ritual to preserve their kingdom’s magic for another 250 years. So when her betrothed bails the morning of the wedding Nyrunn decides to step forward and marry Idonea himself. After all, he loves her and she’s got to be aware of that. He’s convinced she’ll come to be happy about it and she wouldn’t learn of the switch until the revealing after the ceremony. Surely it will be a happy surprise, right?
Wrong.
When the reveal goes far worse than he imagined it starts the ceremonial trip and it’s required rituals off on a very wrong foot. Now, with an angry and heartbroken bride often in tears Nyrunn’s hopes for HEA is going up in flames and circumstances from both inside and outside of the marriage threaten not only their lives, but the magic and survival of their entire kingdom.
Can these two misguided souls set aside their preconceptions and learn to love one another for who they really are? Well, you’ll have to read on to find out. Trust me, the journey is one heck of a ride.
I was given a digital ARC copy of the book in order to review this title, but my rating has not been influenced by this. I already had a preorder in for this title and will be purchasing a copy upon its official release. I firmly believe independent authors are worth supporting as well as we possibly can.
This book grabbed me and I was HERE for it! An all-time favorite!!
It checks off so many of my favorites list for a good romantasy: he falls first, mystery/intrigue, quest/adventure, magical creatures (elves), high stakes.
There was an element to the story that as a Christian I do not believe in but this is a fantasy story so I was fine with it.
A must read for romantasy girlies!
Content: mentions of murder/death, infidelity, mentions of witches, reincarnation
Christian faith rating: 0/3 clean fiction with no language
I (usually) hate it when an "enemies to lovers" books is actually "she thinks he hates her because of a misunderstanding but he actually loves her." I also actively avoid reincarnation stories. I bring this up so you'll know how good this book had to be to earn a 5-star rating from me while including both of those elements.
This is a no-spice romance with lots of snuggles and a few sweet kisses. The story follows Idonea, one half of the Cometa Couple whose marriage is instrumental to renewing her people's magic. Problem is, the other half of that couple wants nothing to do with their responsibilities. As fate would have it, there's a much better man eager to step in, King Nyrunn. Convincing Idonea that he's a better option after the wedding is a challenge Nyrunn is happy to tackle.
I've been super excited for the Tethered Hearts series and this is the first one I've read. Without getting into too many spoilers, Idonea's internal struggles are really well written and form the central conflict of the story while managing not to make the misunderstandings feel unbelievable or overdone. Seeing her "break the cycle" was a very powerful story moment that resonates beyond the fantasy setting. Nyrunn is an outstanding hero who reminds me a lot of my husband, and I loved the way he treats Idonea. I also really liked the world the author created here, and I'm eager to read other books in this setting.
Note: this book was given to me as an ARC; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
-Dual POVs -Arranged marriage -He falls first -Main characters: Nyrunn, the Star Elf king and Idonea, a half human/half elf librarian -Side character friendships
Idonea, the FMC, has such an interesting and unique backstory that I wasn't expecting.
This is the 4th book I've read by the author and I love her characters. They're not perfect "cookie cutter" characters; they have depth, issues and real growth.
🌌~Genres~🌌 Fantasy/Romance/Clean/Dual POV/Marriage of convenience/He falls first
💫~Characters~💫 (Idonea "little Lily") FMC she is definitely a perfectionist because she is only half elf so she isn't as naturally graceful as full elves. She works in a library and I love that, also her name is so pretty. I liked her but she was also a complete idiot and I kinda wanted to slap her so....
(Nyrunn) MMC I liked him, He is so desperately, pathetically in love with Idonea (That's how his love for her is described in the book) And she doesn't even see it I honestly felt bad for him because she just doesn't see it even though how he feels is super obvious. He was so sweet to her like omg how could she think he's anything but in love with her?
(Olaug) IDONEA'S EX omg I freaking hated this guy He was so mean how could he say this "I can’t stomach her for the rest of my life. Even if I could swallow my revulsion enough to suffer her until I had an heir, that would only be the case if the rest of her was unobjectionable outside her repulsive physical appearance. Being near her, I feel sick to my stomach. I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t know if it’s the pathetic way she looks at me or her strange, disconcerting silence. You can almost smell the desperation on her. There is something wrong with that girl, and I won't chain myself to her for the rest of my life." He was absolutely awful, he also cheated on her several times so there's that.
(Asa) IDONEA'S BEST FRIEND She has a crush on frode and I liked her she was a good character.
(Frode) NYRUNN'S ROYAL ADVISOR & BEST FRIEND He was so sarcastic, dramatic and funny and I liked him. He also had a big crush on Asa.
(Katla) NOBLE WOMAN She was so mean always saying terrible things about Idonea right in front of her I didn't like her.
☄️~Quotes~☄️ “Don't you have more important things to be worrying about than my choice of literature, Your Majesty?” His lips twitched up and something flickered in his eyes. “There is nothing more important than you, little lily.”
even back in the library, he'd spent plenty of time pretending to read when really he was just staring at her and pining away in silence.
The sunlight fell and struck the braid that draped over her shoulder, lighting her soft features. How could she think he would ever find her repulsive? How could Olaug have ever looked at her and been anything but smitten with her beauty?
Idonea laughed and if he could bottle the sound to listen to it again and again, he would in a heartbeat.
“Nyrunn, what do you want from me?”“Can it be any clearer?” His laugh was bitter, but soft in its quiet, final desperate plea. “I want you to stop chasing the coward who doesn't want you and choose this one who does.”
🌟~What I liked ~🌟 The cover, The plot, The Heava dance scene, The scenes of him comforting her, him defending her against all the nasty comments people say, The epilogue, The river scene. The last chapter
⭐~What I disliked~⭐ Idk :|
✨~Trigger/Content warnings~✨ Reincarnation, Death of parents, Cheating, Detailed Murder scene, Medical treatment, stabbing, blood, Animal Death (Horse and it's cries of pain are described), Drowning, fighting, PTSD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks,
Every 250 years a couple is chosen to perform a ritual ceremony in order to strengthen the magic of the Star Elves. Idonea is looking forward to marrying Olaug and make everything perfect. But when the groom is missing on their wedding day a quick solution is needed; the Star Elves can't afford to wait another 250 years to invigorate their magic. When Idonea discovers that she's married to King Nyrunn instead of her soulmate Olaug she realises that everything have gone wrong - again.
As usual Baxendell's female protagonists are stubborn as sin and with a complicated background. Idonea thinks she has all figured out and she strives for perfection. Her history makes you understand her reasoning, but it still makes me want to shake her and ask her to open her eyes! I feel sorry for Nyrunn, who has loved her for many years and believes his feelings are returned. He's chocked when he realises that Idonea's feelings for him consists of hate, not love. Still, he never gives up hope, despite her continued pining after Olaug (who's a real a**hole). Idonea had me very frustrated at times, but it also made the turnabout - when it finally happens - all the more delightful! Highly recommended!
(I was also frustrated when I had to stop reading and go to the laundry room; I didn't want to put the book down!)
* This is the second book in the Tethered Hearts series, where every book is written by a different author and can be read as a standalone. I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *
Starlight elves, kings, comets, and magical bonds? Immediate yes. I loved this book. The twists and turns that appear are unexpected but work perfectly. Baxendell is truly a master of the craft because I didn't see them coming even knowing that twists are a specialty of hers. This is a fantastic addition to her quickly growing list of works.
The two main characters work so well, and the secondary characters also have a great balance. Opposites attract. Individually, they shine, too. Idonea is complex. She strives for perfection. Honestly, she's relatable. Everything has to be perfect and in control. Yet there's always a flaw somewhere - it's part of being human, which the author aptly notes. Her determination is admirable, though misguided. After spending as long as she has chasing after her soul mate, it's understandable that it takes a while to come around to the idea of letting go of her imagined perfect life to see the wonderful life Nyrunn offered her. Nyrunn embodied perfection with just a few flaws like being completely dense at times to how Idonea really felt. He improved though the more time he spent getting to know her. Frode and Lady Asa added much-needed comic relief and depth to the book. Baxendell continues to write a compelling cast of characters to surround her main couple.
As far as Baxendell's books go, this is nowhere near the scale of anxiety Marcella went through in Runes of Pain and Peace. It's also not as intense as Nadiya and Lateo in Rune Heart because Nyrunn is a bit more grounded and his position more secure. The mood progressively gets heavier towards the end with particular events and revelations. It ends on a significantly lighter note though. I'd say the mood and tone lie somewhere around that of The Wicked Prince, Sacred Heart, and Of Chivalry and Revenge.
The storyline and writing really stood out. It's clean in content and language. I would happily recommend this book to anyone, particularly those who like worldbuilding, elves, and romantasy.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book is wonderful! I was immediately invested in the story and never wanted to put it down! Most of the story takes place while they are traveling on this marriage ritual to strengthen the magic of the star elves, there's a sprinkle of danger and action, lots of tension and swoon! They start off rough because He's not the one she was supposed to marry, and she has secrets a plenty, he loves her but she hates him. The growth they go through is amazing and there is heartbreaking moments and heartwarming moments. I loved it all!!
The FMC Idonea has a complicated past and you learn more as you read and it unravels slowly all that happened including finding truths about it even she didn't know. Her character will pull your heart strings😭 I felt so bad for her and the pain and suffering she goes through. She never feels good enough and that if she could just achieve perfection she could be loved. And if anything goes wrong she blames herself. It's so sad but she's a very relatable character. At times she also annoyed me but in a, I understand why she's acting this way but wish she wouldn't, kind of way 😂.
The MMC Nyrunn, I loved him so much! He is the sweetest and cares so much for Idonea even when all he receives back is hatred. Now he has his faults and keeps things from her which never goes well, but he tries so hard to be kind, patient, and to put her first and bring her back to life in a sense. Which if you read it, you'll understand. He's got jealousy issues too but just as with Idonea's annoying attributes, his is understandable as well.
They are a very sweet and cute couple and I loved seeing their romance bloom, and them grow together even though it was a rocky road to get there.
The world building was very well done, with lots of beautiful imagery, and a whole world full of different elf races and humans which I can't wait to learn more about in future books set in the same world. This is a stand-alone with a beautiful happy ending so don't worry 😉
It has lessons, on how to truly love, how to be yourself, and that perfection isn't everything! This book was amazing I definitely recommend!
Content: No-Spice/kisses only, no swearing, talk of infidelity/cheating, suggestive elements, mentioning past deaths and remembering details(nothing graphic)
*I received this book as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review
This had a really interesting premise and lay out for everything in the world. The Cometa Couple, chosen every 250 years to coincide with a comet to strengthen the elves magic, are chosen to represent the original elf and human. They must meet certain requirements, so when the groom goes missing the day of the wedding, a solution must be found quickly.
Idonea has the surprise of her life when she realizes that she isn't in fact married to Olaug, but to Nyrunn instead. The king. She is stubborn and set in her ways, set on everything being perfect. Something is wrong. Maybe something in her last life? Because she's remembering parts of her past lives as the rituals go on this time, and is desperate to find her love, Olaug. Except he's kind of a dick. And doesn't love her. But Nyrunn...is a whole other story.
This was a really unique premise that I greatly enjoyed, and I loved the way everything I folded and clicked into place.
Nyrunn was amazing. Flawed, yes. But his consistency in loving and showing love to Idonea was beautiful. As for Idonea… I wanted to shake her so bad, haha. But her brokenness also left me wanting to hug her. So… she’s multi-faceted.
The world-building with Idonea being cursed to have multiple lifetimes bent my brain. I can’t say I fully got it, but it was an interesting twist on things.
For a swoony romance, it was a thematic deep story about breaking curses, true love, and letting go of the illusion of perfection and embracing the life you have. 🖤
Content: kissing only; a few mentions of a man (not MC) having dalliances with girls who aren’t his betrothed
I started this book on the train home from work, read over my hour commute, went out to eat and kept reading, and then came home and finished the story. I think the only breaks I took were all less than 10 minutes and involved walking somewhere.
This is the first ARC that I’ve ever received, and I’m excited to be able to share my honest review. I had always wondered about this process, and I was very impressed by the true lack of obligation to do anything with the book. I’ve read previous books by Celeste, though, so I rightfully knew I was going to be getting something I would enjoy.
On to the story!
My heart BROKE for the female main character, Idonea. Have you ever known someone whose entire existence and self worth was tied up in their trauma, and they just could not believe that they were worth better? From the beginning, I was cheering on Nyrunn to break through to her. His ability to admit to his own assumptions and reflect on the past in light of new information was just beautiful. When someone’s lense gets so dirty and scuffed that they can barely see out of it, it is not a simple, single-pass job to clean it so they can see clearly. It takes time, effort, and understanding. This is definitely a theme I wish we saw more of in reality.
I’m excited that Celeste will be releasing more stories in this world! I am very curious about the other races and cultures teased in this story.
"I will not cast you off because you cannot see your worth."
I can't put into words just how much I loved this book. It was so full of depth and had such strong world building, and I'm so glad there will be more stories set in this world soon.
The MMC was a perfectly brooding Mr. Darcy-ish character, loving someone he knew he could never have. Until her fiancé runs off and he has the opportunity to take his place. Unfortunately for him, the FMC is desperately in love with her intended and is furious when she finds out that she married the king who hates her.
Idonea is going to play her part in the Cometa Couple exactly how she is supposed to in order to renew the magic for their kingdom. She's placed so much responsibility on herself for not being good enough and has spent lifetimes trying to achieve perfection, but her plans are ruined the second she realizes she married the king instead of her soulmate. She's blinded by what she believes, which is that everything bad that has happened to her was somehow her fault. As more of the story unfolded, I both wanted to yell at her for missing the obvious, and understood why her past was keeping her from seeing what was right in front of her. I almost needed more time to digest each part of her story, and thought about this book every second I wasn't reading it until I could get back to my kindle.
3.5 stars. This novel might also be titled "Idonea misunderstands everything". Very slow but good character development. For all the fact that this novel is about mainly the past, the reader is kind of dropped into the middle of the world without much explanation of the past. The entire novel centers around a ritual that needs to happen for the magic to go on. But there's no explanation as to how this ritual came about or why it needs to be completed in order to save the magic. It's basically three characters and their relationships to each other, both presently and in past lives. The FMC is convinced that she will quit reliving these lives if she can just get things perfect but there's no real explanation why she believes that or what evidence has to back up her feelings. She's just plain obsessed about it and she doesn't necessarily remember each one of her previous lives correctly either. She's also convinced with the same certainty that she must be perfect as a person in order to quit reliving her lives. So the entire novel is her thinking she's not worth loving because she's not perfect and the MMC trying to convince her that he really does love her. Which leads to her pretty much misinterpreting everything that comes out of his mouth and everything everyone else does for the entire book. It's somehow both tedious and exhausting at the same time.

I mean this in a respectful way, but wtheck??! This is too much!! Half way through the book before she was even at all kind to him?? And ~~~spoiler~~~ then she did every life over on purpose??? And couldn’t “grasp” he loved her until like the last 10 pages???? I’m sick of stories where the female character is such a jerk to the main guy most of the time!!!! I only finished it because I hate not finishing a book but come on!!
The world building was really good, and I liked the charecter names - Nyrunn, Idonea - but that's about it.
I'm tired of FMCs being mean to the MMCs over some percieved slight that happened ages ago. I mean, sixty percent of the book passed without her saying a single nice thing to him. And I'm also tired of MMCs who brood over their unrequited love instead of confessing. He'd rather risk her hatred by tricking her into a marriage than actually tell her that he likes her?
Ties of Starlight by Celeste Baxendell is the first ARC I've had the pleasure of reading from the upcoming Tethered Hearts series. This multi-author series features romantasy plots about couples who are brought together through magical bonds. I am fortunate enough to be on the street team for these riveting stories by many of my favorite authors. The first book will be released on March 7th, and the one I am reviewing here will come out the following week on March 14th. This book follows Celeste Baxendell's typical writing style of couples who face terrible obstacles that test their love until they realize how much they need each other to be happy. Although I haven't read the other Tethered Hearts books yet, this will probably be one of the darker ones in the series. It is the first book that Celeste has written about elves, which she plans to expand into other books that take place in this new fantasy setting.
Idonea is a half-elf who was chosen to become part of the Cometa Couple, a special bonded elf couple destined to restore the magic of the elf kingdom and protect their land by following an ancient ritual. She is eager to have a successful marriage with Olaug, who she believes is her true love, but there is one problem. Olaug does not love her. When King Nyrunn learns this heartbreaking news, he decides to take Olaug's place for the sake of the Star Elves and also because he has always secretly loved Idonea. After lifetimes of toxic relationships, Idonea must learn to shed her personal beliefs about herself and her incapacity to be loved to accept Nyrunn, complete the ritual, and break the cycle of abuse she has experienced with Olaug.
The plot of this book follows the modern anime reincarnation trope and is particularly similar to the anime series 7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy. Like most modern anime heroines, Idonea has experienced several lifetimes before this one, and all of them ended in heartbreak or death. The key difference between this book and a traditional reborn princess anime is that Ties of Starlight is dedicated to women who are trapped in toxic relationships and contains important symbolic themes of breaking the cycle. Idonea must give up her endless attempts to fix her relationship with Olaug and accept that his endless emotional abuse is not real love. It is this allegory that makes Ties of Starlight truly special.
Although Idonea's problems span much further back than Nyrunn's, he is not without his own struggles. Nyrunn expects Idonea to be a little upset about his last-minute decision to intercept the ritual and take Olaug's place in the Cometa Couple, but what he doesn't expect is that she not only hates him but assumes that he hates her in return. This places a huge barrier in his attempt to provide a happy marriage for her. Much of the book revolves around Nyrunn and Idonea's struggles to communicate with each other. He knows that he can't tell her his true feelings immediately because she does not believe him. To convince her that he loves her, he must show her what love is, and that is where the true magic of this book lies.
Ties of Starlight by Celeste Baxendell is a mesmerizing romantasy that masterfully weaves together elements of fantasy, romance, and personal growth. With its poignant allegory about breaking free from toxic relationships, this book shines as a powerful tribute to women who have suffered emotional abuse. Idonea's journey, though heart-wrenching at times, is ultimately uplifting and hopeful, thanks to Nyrunn's gentle yet unyielding love. As the first book in the Tethered Hearts series, Ties of Starlight sets a high standard for the rest of the series, and I eagerly anticipate the next installment. If you're a fan of fantasy romance with depth and substance, add Ties of Starlight to your reading list – it's a truly unforgettable tale.
One of my favourite things in the world is discovering new authors through series of interconnected tales written by multiple authors. When I discovered this series and found out there was a street team, I therefore immediately signed up. The first arc in this series I received was this book. I had never read anything by this author before and that made me really curious. With the release date getting near, it was time to dive in.
I loved this book from start to finish. I first planned to finish this book on release date, but I just couldn't stop reading and decided to speeden up my schedule. I especially loved the complex romance, the unique dynamic between the main characters and the background of one of the main characters living multiple lives. They really needed to work to get their happily ever after, especially because they both envisioned their happily ever after quite differently.
Although the story focuses mostly on the romance, the world building is also really interesting. The author doesn't use info dumps to explain everything. I'm pretty sure that we would have to read other books set in this world to get a complete picture of the situation and what is actually going on, but we get exactly enough information to understand how important this quest is and how high the stakes are, which helps to understand the choices the characters make.
I was also quite surprised by the ending. Of course a big part of the ending is the ending we've seen coming from the very beginning, we're reading a romance after all, but there are a few elements that really impressed me. I also loved how emotional the finale was. There is a lot of build up, but it makes the finale so satisfying. We understand that the characters have to make some really important choices. And yet, all the choices feel so realistic and fitting.
I can't wait to dive into my next arc in the series!
Oh, wow! I loved, loved, loved this fantastic read! There is so much to untangle, so many layers to work through! It's definitely skyrocketed to my list of favorite romantasy reads with excellent life lessons and a wonderful message.
I absolutely adore how Baxendell explores how our beliefs about ourselves and what we do or don't deserve can utterly blind us to the incredible, magical, beautiful, good things we already have in our lives - or that we could have if we just opened our eyes and made a choice for our own happiness instead of creating more suffering for ourselves than what the universe already heaps at our doors without our assistance.
Idonea is a real people pleaser and perfectionist. She's her own worst critic, judge and jury all rolled into one. The exploration of how her opinion of herself and her severely low self-esteem was something that resonated deeply for me. So many of her thoughts were echoes of things I've told myself too. And I appreciate that the author showed how heavy the weight is when we constantly do things alone and weigh ourselves down even more with self-blame.
Since my own personal experience also required the love of my significant other for me to finally show me that I am deserving of love and from there allowed me to learn to love myself, I absolutely adored Nyrunn. He's such a sweetie and the perfect example of what good and wholesome love can look like. He's the epitome of a supportive partner and his example truly shows what love is, as opposed to Olaug who is the quintessential neglectful and emotionally draining partner.
I could go on and on, but will rein in my gushing... For my last point, I'd like to commend Baxendell for a truly insightful exploration of infidelity and that it is that person's choice, not their partner's "fault". I love how this story shows that fidelity is a choice we get to make every day.
Absolutely love it and definitely see the life lessons woven into this fantastic tale as something many younger readers could learn from and grow more resilient for, while those of us who are older can simply see our younger selves or even find nuggets that could apply to us even now.
This was such a stunning tale! I received an early copy from the author and I am so thankful I did. Going into it completely blind, beyond knowing just the general blurb about it, helped me to enjoy this story so much more. One of my favorite things is when authors write healthy ways to deal with trauma and even ab*sive relationships. Trigger warning! The main character was definitely emotionally and verbally ab*used by the guy that left her at the altar and others so just be a little careful because her inner thoughts are definitely reflective of long term self loathing because of it. With that being said, I thought that Celeste beautifully and tastefully captured someone who had those experiences and what the effects can be on the mind and emotional state of that person. But she also carefully and thoughtfully demonstrated how a healthy and loving person can help you to heal and break the cycle that ab*se can entwin you in. I was kept on my toes the entire time. The world building was phenomenal and I hope to read about more characters from this world because there definitely is a lot of potential for some amazing stories! Clean romance is of extreme importance to me and that is never a worry with Celeste's books. There is some kissing but clean and sweet while still causing butterflies in your stomach. The romantic tension she writes between characters will keep you glued to this book and have you so emotionally involved with the characters. I don't know what more to say other than I ADORED Idonea and Nyrunn's story and I know you will not be disappointed if you pick up this book! Five starts for Ties of Starlight!
The emotions i felt throughout this book were all over the place! It is such a wonderful story of letting go of your past, and what you think you are supposed to do, and accepting what you want and what is best for you not everyone else.
I usually don't like a miscommunication/ misinterpretation, but it actually made so much for this story and Celeste made it work so it was integral to the plot. At first it is kind of confusing, but as you get to know the fmc and her background everything starts to make sense. It's not just miscommunication for the sake of it, it actually is valid to the whole plot.
I enjoyed watching the fmc as she finally came to terms with what she wanted vs what she has expected. She thought she knew what love was and that she had to work for it and make herself someone who deserved to be loved. The mmc showed the fmc that you don't have to work to be loved and that it should be freely given without any expectation.
The world building in the book was interesting while not being overwhelming. I can definetly see the build up for one of Celeste's upcoming releases that is also a standalone but set in the same world.
Overall and wonderfully engaging and emotional read that i throughly enjoyed.
Genre: New Adult/Adult Fantasy Romance Spice: None (just sweet kisses) Language: None
Ties of Starlight is just as magical as the title implies, in more ways than one. Filled with lovely prose, compelling characters, repeating lives, and a star-crossed, slow burn romance, this read kept me on my toes.
The world building was very creative, as our main characters find themselves as the Cosmeta Couple, fated to be married and complete a ritual at the Constellation Pool under a comet that returns every 250 years. This ritual strengthens the magic of their people.
Though marketed as enemies to lovers, it’s an interesting brand of it I don’t see much! The MMC has always loved the FMC, but the FMC hates the MMC at the beginning. It makes for a very interesting dynamic, and it’s all the more satisfying once the feelings are finally reciprocated.
Overall, this was a beautiful read. The FMC especially has a very unreliable pov because she has such a broken view of herself. While tough to read that throughout the majority of the book, it’s very fulfilling to see her realize what love means and how that impacts the way she lives her life.
*I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.*
I devoured this book in a day.. which might’ve made me stay up longer than I was planning, but I just couldn’t stop! For an arranged marriage trope this one was really clean, and I loved that! Nyrunn was a DARLING! No doubt about that. I am like a lover of all things elf and so when I read the blurb I knew I had to read it! Took me a little longer to like Idonea, but I mean she was the one hiding secrets and HUGE things from Nyrunn. And I mean big things.. the twists were unbelievable. 🤯 Though some of the elven facts and the whole world kindof confused me… but it did get me even more invested in the story to try and figure it out. Ok, I’m gonna stop now and just say that this is a MUST read! If you’re a huge fantasy lover.. read this book!
I would recommend this book for ages 15-16+
(Clean, closed door romance. Just up to kissing)
*No language, other than very minor cursing*
Can’t wait to continue the rest of this multi-author series!
Celeste Baxendell has a way with the enemies to lovers trope, let me tell you. This one came with a surprising twist!
I found this to be a very interesting way to portray the cycle of abuse and abusive relationships. The clear misunderstandings that were obviously because of the skewed viewpoint of one of the characters was pretty heartbreaking and it made for a spin on the tale that both had me sympathetic and frustrated. However, this was pretty much the point of the story...we were supposed to be saddened and frustrated right along with another character. So kudos to the author for accomplishing that.
I received an ARC from the author. I was not required to leave a review, positive or negative. All thoughts and opinions are honest and my own.
This story sucked me into the world! I read this in pretty much one sitting because I just had to know how everything would end up. I really liked the characters! They added so much depth to the world building and the plot. The romance was clean and not very detailed and I was never uncomfortable with the amount of romance, even taking into account that they are married for the majority of the book! There were a few passing mentions of witches and their magic but none of the characters in the story practiced that kind of magic and it was not described in detail at all. I didn’t care for that element but I didn’t feel uneasy or troubled about it. There were also several mentions of a certain character being unfaithful to their spouse repeatedly. All in all this was a clean fantasy read with a very intriguing premise and squeaky clean romance.
It's hard to explain the plot without spoiling it, so I will simply say that it's a no-spice romantic fantasy about an Elf King and a half-human woman, marrying to fulfil an important ritual for the aid of their race. The plot and world-building are fantastic, and I was drawn in immediately, genuinely concerned for the characters, and could hardly put the book down. (I read it in less than twenty-four hours.) The writing is solid, and the book presents a strong positive message in addition. I look forward to reading more by this author.
(This is part of "Tethered Hearts", a multi-author series of stand-alone novels with a similar theme. )
The jilted bride and the lovelorn king who steps up, what could go wrong?
When Idonea wasn't asking a question, she was being (purposefully) obtuse. "I wonder why this man is calling me beautiful? Why is he being nice to me? It must be a trick." No you dumb dumb. The conversations were circular and the lying by omittance was blah.
He loves her. She hates him, and loves someone else. They get married to perform the most important ritual that ensures the star elves’ power is restored for the next 250 years.
Simple, right?
Wrong.
This story held so much tension and was almost mind-bending at certain parts. The journey these characters take seems like it will be predictable, and it is anything but. Very well told, and exciting to the end!
I received an ARC copy from the author (and loved it!)
This is a stellar and gripping story! A half-human elf woman is left at the alter and the elf king she hates steps in to marry her.
Idonea and Nyrunn are such well-flushed out characters! Idonea is stuck trying to make everything perfect. She has to get the rituals correct or their people will suffer. She strives and strives, and yet things keep going wrong. She is a weather-worn character that has never had a chance to be seen, until this marriage.
So much pining! King Nyrunn is absolutely precious. He is so caring and mindful and sweet. He is protective and tries so hard. He is good and kind, and his actions speak so loudly of his honorable heart. All he wants is to give Idonea the star-filled world.
Also, shoutout to Frode for being absolutely hilarious and the perfect humorous balance to stoic Nyrunn!
This story also has an incredible world of elves with their individual cultures based on celestial bodies and a soft magic system connected to each. Can’t wait to read more from this universe. And thank you to Celeste for the honor of letting me read an arc of Ties of Starlight. This is my honest review.
