Revenge of the Sirens

Mermaids are real. Unfortunately… so am I.

Turns out being the first siren born in centuries comes with some serious downsides—like every merman in the Atlantic suddenly wanting to claim me. And not for a relationship. For breeding.

Gross.

Worse? The sea witch kidnapped my boyfriend and stole my voice, leaving me to rely on my friends to help me get him back while dodging a horde of muscle-bound fish-men with daddy issues.

But I’m not the type to roll over and play helpless.
I’ve got a plan, a backbone, and maybe a few deadly tricks of my own.

By the time I’m done, the sea witch—and every merman who thought I was theirs—will wish they’d stayed in the depths where they belong.

I don't know what I just read. This was a confusing story. The plot, I don't even know what it was, it lost itself in the pages that never seem to develop into anything. It's a trilogy so expect a cliffhanger, but nothing even remotely pulled the story to build into a dynamic 3rd final book. The trench. And....what else. Let's make it interesting. It didn't.
.
Underdeveloped characters. The storyline struggled. The writing style was different. Is this a romance? No. Not to me. A story of revenge? Not really. Missing your kidnapped mer boyfriend but showing interest in another merman. Jesse. A shady King. Yes. Callie, the villian, let's sympathize with her b/c she doesn't know any better. Every merman apparently wants to take a ride.🤢 Eww. There are no mermaids for all the mermen in the ocean at this time. Callie was a narcissist who *spoiler* sa Merrick for creation.😬 Whaat the... But I must admit when Callie, the sea witch Ursula wannabe was around demanding to be loved and wanted, the story picked up a little bit.🤏🏼 And let me be clear: I don't mean for what SHE did to Merrick.🚫🚫🚫

Comedy relief with Javi and Dario. Are they a couple? I dunno. But let's add the other merman Caspian who wants Javi, or was it Jesse, or Carla. It was all over the place. Cas finally made a choice. I didn't appreciate Jesse thinking if Latino Dario sleeps in her bed it would smell like enchiladas for a week.😒 A stereotype of poor taste. I can't.🫤😑 There's too many issues. Good luck. *•>§<•*🧜🏼‍♀️🧜🏼🧜🏻‍♂️

Revenge of the Sirens - this is an ARC review without any spoilers - just an overall vague overview/revew. I am giving this book 3.5 ⭐️’s. Overall, it was a very fast paced read. It kept me entertained. It maintained some of the little mermaid aspects from book 1. The story continues straight for where it left off with book 1 as well. For it being 253 pages, there was a LOT happening, from the very get-go. At the very beginning, it was a little hard to follow because there was so much happening with the two different POV’s. But once you got past probably the 5th or 6th chapter, it started coming together for me. We did get another character introduced that later on you had a 3rd POV which was nice. I would love to see the character development to go a little further and the relationships that are happening to be expanded on to show how they are growing. It does feel that the relationship between Jesse and Merrick is way further along than it should since the time they’ve known each other is less than a month (at least that’s the time frame it sounds like between the two books so far). The book does end with another spoiler and there will be a 3rd book coming soon. I will definitely be reading it to see where the story leads!

This book is the second in the series. You have to read book one first.
This story picks up where the first book left off. We are introduced to some new characters and learn more about the main characters from the first book.
Again we have a mystery that needs solving, some tension that leads to displays of male possessiveness, and the spice turns up a notch from the slow burn in the first book.
We still have elements from The Little Mermaid, but again with a twist.
This book also ends with unanswered questions, which are dealt with in the next book in the series.
It is nice that we get a deeper insight into the main characters, however to better understand some of the reveals I feel more of a backstory is needed. Some developments are a bit too abrupt and then the story continues at a fast pace. The story has good potential, but could use some more meat on the bones.

This book (and frankly, the first book) could have been an email. This book is very "I have a concept of a plan". The premise of the book, what the description says its supposed to be about, is far more intriguing than what actually happens in the story, which is too chaotic. Plot? It's all over the place. Character arcs? They're basically non-existent. Relationships? Who knows.
Jesse wants Merrick
Merrick is SA'd and has 3 hatchlings?
Caspian wants Jesse but also wants Jovi?
Dario is Jovi's... brother? Or cousin?
The little mermaid like events and characters felt so out of place.
And there is way too much sympathy for Calypso/Callie, imo. Would she deserve what the Merman Clans suggest? Of course not, but she certainly doesn't deserve the kindness or leniency the characters are willing to give her. I don't think the characters have any real set values or morals? They're all very fluid and often contradictory. And the writing style.... there is absolutely parts of it that made me stop and think "that sounds like AI." (Though, only parts.) The authors writing style does seem to have changed/progressed compared to the first book, and in some places that was a good thing, but for the most part, it wasn't. I'm DNFing at 45%. I wish I could power through it but... I just can't.

Blood of the Sirens & Revenge of the Sirens (ARC)

Reviewing together as they are both shorter books and book one does end on a cliffhanger.
Highly recommend for every person obsessed with The Little Mermaid. As this is a retelling with a twist. The males are the ones who need to find their "land legs". And our FMC would rather be in the ocean. This series hits on some sensitive topics: body shaming, bullying, SA, breeding . But it doesn't drag the story down, it propels it forward.
Book 1 did take a bit to find its footing (much like our merman shifters), but once it did, the plot really took off, kept you enthralled and engaged.

Discoveries are made that rock the Clans and threaten Merrick's father's rule. Callie causes Jesse no end of trouble and Caspian finds love and acceptance.

This book carries on nicely from the Blood of the Sirens (Book 1) and explains Callie's quest for vengeance. Jesse's character development is great as is that of Merrick, who displays leadership qualities that surprised most of the mermen.

The twist at the end was not something I expected but was nonetheless highly acceptable. This is a great series and I am really looking forward to Book 3: Reign of the Sirens.

I received a free Advance Reader Copy of this book through BookFunnel and have chosen to leave a review.

★☆☆☆☆ – A Messy, Confusing Follow-Up

The story went weird fast, and not in a good way. The plot jumps around so much that it’s unclear whose story we’re even following—FMC, one MMC, the other MMC who’s suddenly interested in two more characters? The relationships were chaotic, and major story elements were brushed off without care, making the book feel rushed and unfocused.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy this at all. The hunt for a good merman/siren book continues…
