What a great little story. Daphne is staying in haven with the hopes of keeping away from the city’s alpha, so all of the CPS cases there are referred to her.
A couple of children are shoplifting for an unknown reason and it is up to Daphne to figure out why.
With help from Dwayne and her wolf senses, Daphne has a busy couple of days.
This was a fun, easy, short story that adds wonderfully to the Daphne books.
Definitely worth the quick read. Loved it

I love this installment in Daphne’s story! She solved a mystery and helped a bunch of Hidden City residents at the same time, and Dwayne… I love Dwayne and how enthusiastic he gets by whatever he does. This was a great Christmas read, and I’m sure I’ll read it again next Christmas (and the next, and the next).

The perfect addition to a perfect series, and just PERFECT for the festive season! Not a fluffy, floozy read by any means, there's so much heart and soul in this short story, leaning onto the darker side, it draws attention to the slimeballs that poison our environment, we all know they exist and at times like Xmas, prey on the vulnerable. Yeah, the weasels of society, or perhaps the ferrets....

Someone is targeting kids into stealing, using tactics that can only be described as abhorrent. Daphne, still reeling from WHAT she might be feeling for the Warlock, is just as distressed at his total silence, so when she's sent to aid a nine year old girl caught stealing, she puts her heart and soul into it. What she discovers leads her right back to the Alpha she's hiding from, avoiding at all costs, to one of his lackey's. In another fabulous Daphne read, "brain" Daphne and "heart" Daphne are at odds, again.... very comically....Who, too, is comical, is the Countess. Oh my word, she's a real tattoo laiden, drink chugging, no bars hold master of awesome! With a heart of gold....but best no one sees or acknowledges that fact! Between her and Dwayne, the chuckles are guaranteed throughout this book.

Ms Hignett must be a magical being, how else could she cast a spell over her reader, how else could she execute a story with so much depth in so few pages? How else could she portray characters that take up residence in one's heart? How else can she produce story after story that encompasses me wholly, that makes me laugh, that brings a tear to my eye, (yes, she did that too in one particularly emotional scene with Myf) Magic I say, no doubt about it! Fantastic characters, fantastic plot full of problem solving mystery, with a touch of darkness and a sprinkle of hope, I loved every second reading it! The last paragraph had me cooing and aww-ing with a warm fuzzy feeling right to my toes! Needless to say, I'm addicted to this series, I'm off to hound the author for more....

The Wolf vs Santa

Just in time for the merriest time of year, I lucked out in getting to read this gem of a Christmas story.

We are back in (freezing cold) Hidden City where some of the children have been acting out of character and doing a little five-fingered discount shopping. The only thing they have in common is writing letters to the big red guy. Our beloved Daphne and Dwayne need to solve this mystery in time for everyone to be able to enjoy a (Hopefully, with many layers of clothing) warm and fuzzy Yuletide with their families instead of lock up (or wherever it is they put the naughty children).

As usual, you can expect to laugh out loud. How can you not with lines like this?

“You probably don’t, dear. But I will say that his horns come in handy when you need something to hold on to when things get bumpy during the mustache rides”

You may also shed a tear with the progress Myf makes in this novella, as well as come away with a hell of an appetite after hearing about her delicious, holiday-themed treats.

Don’t expect your typical run-of-the-mill Christmas story here. This festive read has bad guys, pyramid schemes, goblins and weasels, but don’t fear there’s still beef Wellington, eggnog cocktails and Yule fairies singing carols.

This was the perfect read to get me into the spirit of things and tide me over til the next installment in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series, The Wolf vs the Shifter. Ms Hignett never fails to deliver and this was no exception.

This was the book I didn't know I needed until I got it!! Set right after book 2, it is Christmas time in the Hidden City. Daphne can't leave the Hidden City with the Alpha ready to grab her and dole out his form of punishment. While working her cases from there, she finds out seemingly good kids have been caught stealing. And who do you think told them to do that? Santa!?! Now Daphne must figure out who is sneaking into these kids' homes and asking them to steal.
I absolutely loved this story! From wondering if it was really Santa to maybe the "other Guy", you never know who will be sneaking into the kids' rooms. Daphne is her usual self, wanting to fix things and help the families. She is determined to get to the bottom of this, even if it ends up being the "Other Guy". And then there is Dwayne - hoping it is the "Other Guy" so he can get his revenge. Even the Countess has her theories and personal insight into the suspects. And can I say how excited I was towards the end! No spoilers from me, but I was excited to get that little glimpse!
I could not put this down once I started it! I love all of Lauretta's books and this was no exception. It was typical Lauretta humor and had me snorting out loud. And the story had me guessing until the end!

Dwayne is the gift that keeps giving

This little novella is the perfect gift to yourself for the holidays. Or any other time of year when you want a little holiday cheer. Daphne and Dwayne are on the case of Evil Santa, who has visited several kids in the Hidden City and offered to give them what they most want on their Christmas wish list if they steal certain high-priced items.

Who is Evil Santa? Honestly, just about everyone (other than our heroes, of course) is a suspect. We know he smells like a grandma at Burning Man. He might or might not be that Other Guy you get when you misspell Santa's name. Whoever he (or she, or they) is, Daphne wants to beat them up for putting her kids in harm's way. And Dwayne just wants to beat someone, anyone, up. As usual.

This ain't your grandma's Hallmark Christmas story. But this is Daphne, our irrepressibly cheerful and optimistic wolf. If she can't save Christmas, no one can.

Something strange is happening to the children of the Hidden City when they've sent their letters to Santa, causing them to become little kleptomaniacs. Luckily Daphne and Dwayne are on the case to find out who's behind the Christmas chaos.
Daphne is hoping it's Santa on a bad day.
Dwayne is hoping for the other guy, as he has a score to settle....

This was an absolutely wonderful Christmas short story featuring two of my favourite characters by Lauretta, getting me right into the holiday spirit.

Daphne is as awesome as ever, trying her best to help the families of the Hidden City, while Brain Daphne and Heart Daphne war amongst themselves once more.

And Dwayne, well he's has a new idea for what a pyramid scheme should entail.

I also think everyone needs a Myf in their lives and she can give me her recipes anytime. Totally delightful. Loved it 😁

The perfect Christmas gift for all fans of Daphne and Dwayne!

As Daphne goes about her job as social worker for children in The Hidden City, she realises something is amiss and Santa is somehow involved…or is he?
As Daphne tried to work out what is going on and help the children in need, she has Dwayne by her side. (He’s secretly hoping it’s ‘the Other Guy’) The clues are confusing, but Daphne has her suspects and she is determined to put things right for everyone. The Countess is on hand with cocktails and advice and Myf has catering in hand. (plus a special moment that will give you ALL the feels)
Can Daphne right the wrongs? And will Christmas find her too? A Christmas tale with a less traditional take, but with all the true spirit of Christmas you could wish for, delivered Daphne and Dwayne style.

Fabulous Christmas read

As ever Lauretta has written a fantastic story. Great to read a description about Myf. Hopefully her mystery will be solved in the next book. Another teaser about Daphne and her hidden depths, can't wait to see how it will be further explored. I have visions of her going supernova on the Alpha. There is a little sadness with the children's story but Daphne saves the day with the help of the awesomeness of Dwayne. I love how she calls him sir. She is the John Wick of the hidden city but so much better. (Spoiler, John Wick dies, what was the point of the other films, he could have been killed off in the first and saved himself the bother! )Daphne deserves a happy ever after and she has her own gift of Christmas at the end of the story. Yeay.

Wolf VS Santa (A Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth Christmas book) by Lauretta Hignett is a 4 ⭐️ read.
This was a nice short Christmas story and as alway the author just knocked it out of the park. Daphne and Dwayne are on the hunt for “Santa” who is terrorising kids into stealing for him and say he will grant their “wishes” but Daphne knows something else is going on and is determined to stop “Santa” in his tracks.
Just when I think this author writes their best book another comes along to prove me wrong and I’m glad that it does.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Perfect Present

Hand me the benedryl, I’m allergic to feelings and I’m having some BIG feelings. And I can’t even resent them, because they were just right for my weary, dreary, reluctantly pollyannicle, self. This has just enough of all the right elements and felt more real and magical (and chaotic as appropriate) because it still felt authentic. Danger, intrigue, festivity.. and that’s just talking about the goose. This story made me tear up. I’m not even mad about it. (Pass the benedryl. Dratted Feelings allergy).

Holiday wowz!

This one has some hilarity and some heartbreak as well, but oodles of action. I have to say this was a whole new take on Christmas antics and grinches.
I am keeping my reviews short and sweet lately but for the last part of my review I will say this... this is a short novella that is worthy of adding to a collection but I would say at least 16+ instead of the family friendly rating of the others. More language and very suggestive comments and references. The comments were funny for the most part but probably not for young readers.

What an absolute xmas treat! This little novella was a brilliant surprise from Lauretta Hignett on the run up to the holiday season. The story has a bit of everything, we see more examples of hardship and poverty in the community, the usual snooty witches, wonderfully innocent children and loser justice delivered with a knuckle sandwich - a real xmas miracle! I need Myf in my kitchen this holiday season I'm salivating just reading about all the awesome treats she made!

This was such a charming and adorable Christmas story with Daphne and Dwayne. It's Christmastime, and all should be cheery, but something peculiar is overwhelming the children in The Hidden City, and thievery abounds! As the Official CPS, Daphne investigates the 5 W's: Who, What, When, Where, and Why? The Countess and Myf keep them nourished while they trail shifty new bad guys! I loved this delightful holiday tale with of course classic Hignette drama!! FIVE STARS!

More Daphne and Dwayne - best Christmas gift ever! 🐺🪿

This short story is perfectly timed for the holidays. It’s an adorably dark mystery featuring our favorite murderous duo taking on Evil Santa—or maybe the Other Guy.

If you sometimes skip novellas - this one is definitely worth reading. It’s got everything the main books have. Brain vs Heart Daphne. Dwayne and his … antics. Bad guys and mysteries. And it’s hilarious and filled with amazing characters.

Awwwww, what a gorgeous little book!

Someone is ruining Christmas for Daphne's vulnerable kids and their families. Can she and Dwayne solve the mystery, and bring festive happiness to all who need it?

This is just adorable. Sweet, funny and with the fierce bite of justice that only Daphne and Dwayne can deliver. And there's a special surprise for Daphne and friends, too.

A little nugget of festive joy.

This is a Christmas novella in the Hidden City series. What a magical and sweet story it is. Daphne and Dwayne are out trying to find who is targeting the kids in the Hidden City in the festive season. Every book by Lauretta Hignett I read is like magic–I get so excited when I pick it up, and I can’t, and don’t want to, put it down till I finish reading the last word. She is so talented. A must read!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A fantastic little festive story to fill the space waiting for the next epic instalment of Daphne & Dwayne. Loved it, has all the feels and a fantastic, heartwarming ending for the season. Took the edge off my anxiety from the Wolf vs the Warlock, but I am still eagerly awaiting its release. Lauretta never disappoints, unique & creative stories, solid world building and flowing writing style that make her one of my top 5 favourite authors.

Well what a little humdinger! This is a great addition to the series, a little novella to get us through Christmas. Daphne is doing her best to keep the kids of Hidden city off the naughty list as an evil Santa starts to stir up trouble. I loved Dwayne's cameo here his and Daphne's conversations made this novella sing. I can't wait to see the showdown that is rumbling in the distance between Alex the Alpha and Daphne and her crew!

Fun Christmas story

Daphne is taking a break and staying in her warded apartment to avoid the Alpha. She still needs to do her child services work, so when kids start stealing for Santa, she needs to find out what is going on. I enjoyed this story, it was a quick read with lots of mystery, action, and emotion. I really like the characters and storyline in this series and am looking forward to the next book.

It's Christmas and we have a mystery to solve! Santa is no longer giving, but taking from kids too - does this mean that Santa has turned evil, or is it someone else in disguise? So, do Daphne and Dwayne have what it takes to save Christmas on behalf of the children of the Hidden City? If their track record is anything to go by, they'll manage it by the hair (or feathers) on their chinny-chin-chins.

Short stories are never my favourite format but this is an exception. Anything to have a bit more Daphne and Dwayne time.

Though short it is still heartwarming, mysterious and funny.

Favourite quote:
When talking about taking the elevator,
“Does this thing go any faster?”
Do you want me to cut the cable?
“No!”
Well. Then…no.

Evil Santa or the Other Guy?

A cute, heartwarming, and a bit dark, Christmas novella that finds Daphne looking into why some kids in the Hidden City are stealing expensive electronics for Christmas. Is it Evil Santa or the Other Guy? It comes down to the wire to figure out who it is. There are some heartwarming moments, and a Christmas miracle.

Adorable! A very cute, very sweet Daphne short story! Dwayne was hysterical and such a great side kick. Lauretta wrote both characters with so much love and compassion, you almost forget they are just book characters, because they start to feel like family over time. I highly recommend this very satisfying read!

A bit of seasonal fun

Having just read the first 2 books in the series and having to wait for the third, it was a festive treat to read this story.
The background is a continuation of the main story, but it stands alone. Just a nice Christmas tale that can be read, or not, without affecting the main plot. Very good.

Better Than Expected

I’ve seen this series in my “Recommended” list several times, but the covers just didn’t really speak to me….until a goose in a Santa hat. As this is a novella, I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. I was quite surprised to like the story very much. It pretty much ran through all the feels….and a GOOSE! I am going to try other books in the series.

A Fabulous Unhinged Treat!

Can I just say how jealous I am that I’m reasonably sane? Daphne has way more fun than me. I want to be a secret speedracer with a powerful hot guy. I want to question if Evil Santa is a shifter.

Treat yourself to this book. I read it in March, you don’t have to wait for the holidays.

good

I love Daphne and Dwayne in this book. this seem to be a little bit of a break for Daphne from the polar bear trying to kidnap her. I like that she works with child protective services and is having to figure out who is dressing up like Santa and manipulating the kids into stealing for them.
